2017 Concept2 Summer Solstice Challenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's almost the official beginning of summer here in the Northern hemisphere, and we have a great challenge in store to celebrate. The Summer Solstice Challenge is our way of honoring the longest day of the year. The challenge is to row or ski 21,000 meters on June 21. Meters can be completed in several smaller workouts throughout the day or all at once. If completing the meters all at once, you can add 97 meters (for a total of 21,097) and rank it in the Online Rankings as a half-marathon. Learn how to set up a single distance workout on your monitor. Once you meet the challenge, you will have earned a downloadable certificate of completion and access to special Summer Solstice Challenge items from our third-party fulfillment vendor, Cafe Press. This is an individual challenge, so you do not need to be on a team to participate. There is no need to sign up for this challenge. Simply enter your June 21 meters in your logbook.  Happy Summer! It sounds silly, but to Bruce Bridgeman -- and probably only Bruce Bridgeman -- Hugo was a legitimately life-changing film. Watching it literally helped him see again.
Bridgeman was born with partially impaired stereovision -- better known as "lazy eye" -- wherein one's eyes have a tendency to drift independently, making your brain unable to accurately process depth. But when Bruce saw Hugo in 3D, he was not only able to see the "depth" in the film, but he also came out of the theater suddenly able to perceive, in his words, "a riot of depth" in the outside world.
This sudden dramatic breakthrough did have scientific precedent. A 2011 study documenting five people with impaired stereovision who later learned to see in 3D concluded that people "were most likely to have a breakthrough if the stereoscopic images were reinforced by monocular cues like relative size and shading." In short, Hugo was so effective at creating the illusion of depth that it helped Bridgeman's mind establish the necessary synaptic connections to bridge the gap to fully-functioning stereovision.

4 Things That Spit In The Face of Other Things
4 Things That Spit In The Face of Other Things
The last time I spit in the face of authority, I defied the rules of grammar and decided to write in italics for no reason at all.  That’s the way I roll.  These things however, took it a few hundred steps further, and they’re in no way related to each other.  So if you’re here for continuity and order you’ve wrong to the place came.

Bruce Bridgeman
As I have been working backwards (establishing the outcome before the concept), I used the knowledge I have gained through the “Developing a Brief” workshop to develop a concept of which I wish to pursue. Bruce Bridgeman, a professor of psychology and psychobiology suffered from stereo blindness - a condition where the person did not have the ability to perceive stereoscopic depth, resulting to a 2-dimension vision.
“When we’d go out and people would look up and start discussing some bird in the tree, I would still be looking for the bird when they were finished,” he says. “For everybody else, the bird jumped out. But to me, it was just part of the background.” (Bridgeman, 2012, BBC)
However in 2012 Bridgeman watched the film Hugo (2011) in 3D and through this process, his 3-dimensional vision was linked. Though his case occurs rarely, it does not work for every single person who suffers from stereo blindness.
"When it happens, it's very sudden and pleasant, to see things in 3-D that have been flat for all your life" (Bridgeman, 2013, CNN)
I find this story intriguing as Bridgeman gained a new perception that he never had experienced before as he was born stereo blind.
This is the starting point I have chosen to push forward. This has urged me to think of creative challenges that I can potentially be solving such as, how do I visualise this core theme of senses perception? What does the lost of a perception or how does obtaining a new perception translate in my creative practice of visual communication. What medium is best to explore this concept, through digital-based media, or through print-based media.
