citrus and dark water
muse: choi soobin
setting: modern, non-kpop au, slice of life
word count: 836
a/n: .... hi. uh. here's something I wrote because Soobin was on my brain today. i also didn't proof this but, enjoy!!
“Choi Soobin, are you in there trying to balance shampoo bottles on your head again?”
You press your ear to the thick oak separating you and your husband, the sound of spraying water and suspicious movement making your ears prick. Soobin takes showers no shorter than forty minutes every damn time, but even this was a bit much for him. He hadn’t even sung yet. Is he… okay?
You can’t hear him moving around in the shower or anything, which makes you worry. Thanks to your obsessive, intrusive, and chaotic brain, you’re sure after a few more minutes that Soobin is actually drowning 21 ½ inches deep in the porcelain Clawfoot; or passed out cold on black and white hexagon mosaic tile; or — god forbid — actually, like, fucking injured. Soobin is clumsy on the best of days. That stature of his has gotten him into many a situation and this — this is exactly why you’re worried.
But still. You knock, and nothing.
“Soobin?” You call again, your knocks more feverish after a moment. “Choi Soobin… I do not care if your bare ass is out, if you don’t answer me in under fifteen seconds I will pick this lock using the pocket knife you keep in your Levi’s that you think I don’t know about.”
You think you hear a sudden thud behind the door. Water dripping. And then:
“Soob—fuck!” You screech, coming face to face with your beanstalk of a husband, hair damp and fully dressed.
“Soobin,” you glare. “What the hell are you doing?”
“What was that about my pocket knife?” Your husband asks, lips curling up into a half smile. The air in the bathroom is humid, and heat curls its way out through the doorway, tickling your face. It smells like citrus and something masculine in here. Dark. Musky. Something so distinctly Soobin that it makes your chest clench with familiarity. Soobin quirks a brow now. “I keep telling you I can buy you a matching knife if you really want one that bad.”
“What were you doing in there,” you ask, tone accusatory. “Seeing how long you can hold your breath again—”
“Because if you really are serious about it, I think a pink knife would be cute—”
“I seriously expected to come in and see you asleep on the ground again just like when Yeonjun got you blackout drunk—”
“Or maybe purple. Or blue! Blue would be a nice color for a knife—”
“I know you like to listen to music but jesus fuck Soob, I thought you were going to—”
“I’d just be worried that you’d—”
“Injure yourself!” You both finish at once, eyeing each other suspiciously. You take a deep breath afterward, trying to steady your beating heart. Of course, Soobin is fine. Because Soobin is always fine. This fact alone does nothing for your anxiety.
“I was trimming my hair,” Soobin finally tells you after a few seconds. He angles his long, slim frame a bit to let you see past. In the sink, sure enough, tufts of his honey-brown hair lie dormant. You blink once. Twice. Oh.
“I had my earphones in so I didn’t hear you knocking,” he finishes, reaching out to twist a finger around one of your strands now. He tugs playfully on it. “Figured I should look nice for the lunch.”
“I—heard water,” you say, leaning into his touch. Soobin nods. “I was shaving too. You probably heard the tail end of it, baby.”
You hum and suddenly feel goosebumps trail across your skin. The hot air from the warm tap is fading now, leaving a chill in its wake. “It’s snowing out,” you tell Soobin matter-of-factly, watching as he steps back to tap some aftershave onto his angular jawline.
“I’ll wear a coat. Are you wearing that?”
You hum and look down at your cashmere Burberry. It was a gift from the man standing in front of you, threaded with the finest materials and in the color he loves to see you in the most: a rich, classy blue. When you meet his eyes again, he’s back to smiling.
“Good, you look beautiful. We’re meeting your parents at noon, right?”
“Right,” you say. Soobin finishes at the sink, leaning down and pressing a chaste kiss to your cheek before ruffling your hair a bit.
“Okay, baby. Let’s go then, yeah?”
And then the anxiety from earlier is gone entirely. Instead, Soobin holds your hand, leads you out through your living room, and out of your home to the parked red Mini he’s so fond of driving, even if it’s not his.
And you have the sudden, glaring reminder that this is your life. Winter lunches with your husband and family. A man who is so soft and attentive with you, that he knows how to soothe those horrible thoughts of yours in an instant. A life so full of love, you aren’t exactly sure how you got this lucky.
But it doesn’t matter. Because it’s yours. And it always will be.

16 (no, 15) toothbrushes
A late birthday gift for @pathsofoak . I really hope you like it, despite how toothbrush-focused it became <3
Thomas doesn’t know what they expect to learn from him. It’s not like he’s doing anything–he doesn’t even have a treadmill this time.
If they’re using this room to invoke something in him, it’s not going to work. Thomas doesn’t remember what his childhood bedroom looked like, but it couldn’t have been like this. Grey walls bleed into grey tile floors, which creep up to the lighter grey of the metal bed frame. The sheets underneath the grey duvet are white, laundered every week. Thomas has spent days trying to get the corners of his bed made perfectly, but there’s always something off.
He looks at the desk when he needs a pop of color. It’s solid wood–no hidden drawers, false bottoms, or clues there–and the dark brown swirls aren’t giving up their secrets. He doesn’t have the chair anymore, not that he misses it. It had been grey, too, and less comfortable than his bed.
His door… in his head, a child’s door would have posters or drawings on it. His door used to slide open, that’s how it had worked when they’d put him in here, but on the last day he was allowed out they’d replaced it with a hinged door and a visible lock and a spot for food.
The lights go out automatically–or maybe controlled by someone else just to mess with him–before he can find the bathroom again, but he just runs his fingers over the wall until he finds it again.
The door to the bathroom is the original grey, blending in with the wall if you don’t know where to find the seams. The continuous plain grey tile is barely even helpful. The sink and toilet and too-neat towels are white, and the pre-programmed shower is tiled with grey hexagons instead of grey squares.
He’s not even allowed to make eye contact with himself in the bathroom mirror, because there isn’t one.
His toothbrush, which must be changed out when he’s asleep, is a dark blue right now. But he’s had light blue and green and yellow and purple.
You’re supposed to replace a toothbrush every three months. It’s one of those things Thomas knows he must have been taught, though he can’t remember who taught him. Four toothbrush changes… if they’re not just messing with him, then he’s been here for a year, and locked in for a little under half that.
The bathroom door opens easily, it never locks like the other one used to.
Why would they switch a locking door to another type of locking door? If they could keep him here anyway, why waste the resources and labor on it?
They must really want him to know that he’s locked in. That he can’t go anywhere.
It’s worse than last time, somehow.
finish on ao3 or continue reading
He’d thought the white walls would drive him crazy. But at least he’d had the treadmill. He’d been able to run.
This time, he’s talking to himself, describing the wooden desk and the food he gets out loud. He’d had to get used to his voice again, after not hearing for a while. Maybe he can avoid that this time. They’re going to let him out eventually.
He’s getting fed. He knows he’s being watched. He doesn’t even use the fully-charged tablet he has. One of the corners is chipped, and the screen is cracked on that side. The day after they locked him in, he’d checked it to make sure there wasn’t a code or puzzle or something he had to solve to get out. There’s not much left on it, if there was anything in the first place. They probably just gave him a random tablet to try and keep him busy.
Maybe they want to see if he’ll try taking it apart and making himself a way out. But the components of a tablet won’t pick the lock, and that’s assuming he could take it apart successfully.
Thomas isn’t sure why he hasn’t just smashed it on the floor yet, or thrown it at the wall. It’s not like he uses it.
He’s not sure what they’re going to do if he does. Maybe just replace it with a new one, the way they do his toothbrushes. Or would they leave the broken pieces scattered on the ground to see what he does with them?
Would they step in if the glass from the screen cut his hands open? Or would they leave him until he was passed out or asleep, to ensure that he didn’t get any interaction?
Thomas isn’t curious enough to find out the answer to that one yet.
He puts the tablet on the desk and goes to bed.
He doesn’t have anything else to do, anyway.
Thomas’s toothbrush has changed again. Pink, this time.
He hopes that they’re changing it at random, trying to throw him off. It can’t have been three months already. He would have noticed that much time passing.
His wooden desk, his only color, has been taken, too. It’s been replaced with a metal nightstand for the tablet to sit on. He’d stopped counting the swirls in the wood a while ago, but it had been something different to look at. What are they going to take next? His bed? Is he going to wake up and find the bathroom sealed off, a grey bucket in its place?
He stares at the tablet again. Turns it on, today. There’s no date, no time–not that he’d trust them to be accurate if there was. He’s too familiar with WCKD’s games for that.
Thomas can’t remember the last time he changed his clothes, but they’re all the same anyway: A black shirt and pants. Maybe he just grabs the same ones after he showers and puts them back on, over and over and over again.
Some days, he gets out of bed just long enough to eat and shower. He can only pace the room so many times, and walking in circles only makes him spiral further into his head.
He’s been coming up with names for his food, lately. He doesn’t usually say them out loud–he doesn’t want them to know what he’s doing. But he tells himself what every item on the tray is, and rates it out of ten. Sometimes if he closes his eyes, he can pretend he’s eating in the Glade–the food tastes too fresh for him to pretend it’s from the Scorch.
He misses Chuck. Chuck would ask him a million questions, if he were here. He would ask why he wouldn't try to find or make a way out, why he hasn’t bothered with the door.
He'd tell Chuck that WCKD wouldn't change out the door if they meant for him to try and get out.
He's meant to be stuck here.
Chuck wouldn’t get that–not that Thomas would really want him to. Teresa would, he thinks. She might be here now, watching him through the cameras. He doesn’t know what she wants from him anymore.
He doesn’t know what WCKD wants from him anymore.
When his toothbrush changes to brown, he thinks about Minho’s eyes, and then maybe his arms, too. He hopes the Right Arm is treating everyone well, at least better than WCKD did. Hopes that they all got somewhere safe.
Thomas stopped hoping that he’d see them again somewhere around the yellow toothbrush.
Maybe they’re all dead. Maybe they think he’s dead. Maybe they're searching for him. Probably they gave up already–not that Thomas can blame them for that.
Light blue again, to start the cycle over. Thomas inspects this toothbrush thoroughly, trying to memorize the swirls and patterns on the grip. He even takes a picture with the tablet.
He should have thought of this sooner. It could be just like the Maze, a hidden code that will reveal itself as he looks at the rest of the toothbrushes.
He's wasted so much time. He could have solved this sooner.
It doesn’t look like this toothbrush comes apart to pick a lock or hide a key or anything, but one of the others could. There’s got to be something to it.
When Thomas finishes his inspection, he puts the toothbrush back carefully. He doesn’t want to mess it up and risk missing a clue.
He counts the blueberries on his food tray when it comes; 54. He doesn’t count anything else, but he’s still giving each item a name. He’s trying to be original, but Thomas doesn’t know that many names–he doesn’t know that many people–and he doesn’t want to use the names of his dead friends because if he started calling his food ‘Chuck’ he’d probably stop eating it.
He doesn’t know why ‘Stephen’ keeps popping into his head as an option, but he steers clear of that one, too. It doesn’t feel right to use it.
Thomas studies the door again, trying to see if there’s something he’s missed. A spot for a toothbrush to click in, something like that. But there’s nothing, just a regular door with an old-fashioned lock that he can’t get through.
The pictures he took of the toothbrush stay on the tablet instead of being deleted in the middle of the night or even just remotely. He wonders who’s watching him. Wonders what they think of him.
Wonders if it’s Teresa. If this is something she’s involved in, again. He thinks–knows–they grew up together. Maybe she’s in her own room, set up like this, now. Maybe it only works if it’s happening to both of them.
Mostly, when he’s not trying to figure out the secrets of the toothbrush or scratch a mark into the walls or his bedframe (impossible), he thinks about Chuck, or Newt, or Alby. Any of the Gladers, really. But especially the dead ones. Even Gally. Thomas isn’t sure anymore if he dreamed up the whole thing about him still being alive.
He doesn’t know why he would dream up Newt begging to be killed, either, but that feels more real. Thomas can’t explain why.
Would they have thought up a way out by now? Tried something he hasn’t thought of?
Green. It’s got a slightly different pattern to it, and Thomas is sure now that he can’t have been here for…
He can’t have been here for two years. WCKD had been, at least externally, on the brink of collapse. That’s why he’d come back, he was going to help the Right Arm take down WCKD and get the Immunes somewhere safe.
He hopes his friends are safe. That, even if they’d been looking for him, they’d given up in favor of protecting themselves.
The lights flicker a little when they dim, which is new. Thomas should stay awake and see if they do it again, but he thinks they might add something to help him go to sleep when they want him to, because he’s never been able to count how long it takes for the lights to come back on.
It could be a full day, for all he knows. Or only a couple of hours. At least the bathroom lights don’t ever fully go off, not while he’s in it.
The green toothbrush is much harder to inspect in the dim lighting, but he’s still able to get a couple of pictures with the tablet before he can’t fight off the urge to sleep any longer.
Thomas wakes up to the smell of hot food, which he hasn’t had in so long. They usually don’t serve him anything warm, but it must be a special day, or maybe someone was feeling especially sorry for him. It’s toast with jam, scrambled eggs, and a waffle with chocolate chips and syrup. Thomas doesn’t take his time with the eggs, because they’re gross when they’re cold, but he savors the toast.
He cuts the waffle up into 25 pieces, not at all equally sized, and chews each one until it’s mush in his mouth. The chocolate chips he lets sit on his tongue until they melt all the way. He doesn’t know when he’s going to have chocolate again.
Thomas has barely slid the empty tray back through the door when another one comes through.
The food has never had a set schedule, but it doesn't usually come this close together… the waffle had still been warm, when he’d finished.
Thomas doesn't know what they would do if he tried to hoard food. They'd catch him immediately, but it’s not like he can eat this right now, even though it’s just a couple of apples.
He puts them in the drawer of the nightstand and slides the tray back.
Nothing else happens.
Maybe it’s some sort of code or clue, but it’s not one Thomas understands. Maybe it's just a mistake and he’s overthinking it.
It's not like they don't give him snacks sometimes. He'll just hold onto it until he’s hungry.
When Thomas wakes up, he checks his drawer for the apples. They're still there, and they're still giving him full meals, so he leaves them alone . He doesn’t get any more apples, and he doesn’t get hot food anymore. He misses Frypan’s cooking. Even if it was a bit suspicious at times.
Nothing else goes missing from his room, and the lights don’t flicker again, at least not in his room. Maybe the flicker was on purpose, to let him know they were turning the lights off, since he was still in the bathroom. He’s never been in the bathroom when they turned the lights off before.
Thomas decides that tomorrow, he’s not going to get out of bed at all–not even for food.
Maybe to go to the bathroom, if he really has to.
He wants to see what they’re going to do if they think he’s given up.
Maybe they’ll try to send Teresa in, if she’s here. Maybe she’ll tell him something. Give him some human contact for the first time in… he doesn’t know how long.
Thomas is up before his food arrives, and he doesn’t move when he hears the slot open. He hears it open again, later, and still doesn’t move. Normally, if he still has a tray, they won’t send a new one in.
When it opens a third time, he glances over at it as best he can while he’s laying down. He doesn’t want to move too much. Sitting up would be taking too much interest.
The first two trays look like his normal bland food with water–Thomas can’t tell if it’s cereal, oatmeal, or porridge–and a little side with either fruit or vegetables.
The third is just two apples.
Again. What are they trying to tell him? Thomas still doesn’t get up, even though he really wants to investigate.
When his lights come on again, he puts the apples with the other two in his nightstand. The other two trays are gone, but not moving for a day isn’t enough to warrant a visit, apparently.
They’re probably still tracking his brain waves. They’d know if something was wrong, at least with his brain activity. It’s not like they can see his thoughts.
They can make him and Teresa telepathic, though, so maybe he shouldn’t rule ‘seeing thoughts’ out of the list of things WCKD can do.
A hunger strike won't get him out of here–they'll probably force-feed him or knock him out and give him a feeding tube. He's not getting out until he solves their puzzle or they let him out.
Hopefully he's on the right track now.
When his toothbrush is changed out for a yellow one, Thomas studies it the way he'd studied the first two. There’s no easily apparent pattern, not that he’d expected it to be revealed so early in the cycle. He takes pictures of it to compare later. The texture is the same as the other two, which probably doesn't mean anything.
He keeps his normal routine outside of inspecting his toothbrushes. Nothing has gone missing for a while, though he also hasn't gotten a replacement desk yet. He wonders if they're ever going to put something in that empty spot or if it had just been a reminder that they can take anything they want from him, and he'll be unaware of it until they turn the lights back on to wake him up.
As he eats his bland beige food for the day, he tries to recall what the waffle tasted like on his tongue. How long had it taken for the chocolate chips to melt? The egg, too–he never thought he’d miss eating an egg. And the jam would probably go well with breakfast today, but he doesn't have any.
It feels like it’s been a month since he had food that tasted like anything. No, a year.
Whoever had been serving him that day must have felt bad for him, but they were probably fired or at least aren't allowed to feed him anymore.
Actually, Thomas isn't sure how employment at WCKD works. How many people working here know what’s going on?
The guards have to, they'd been chasing them down and everything. The scientists would, too. And everyone in charge does. What's the hiring process? Or has WCKD just been kidnapping all of their employees the same way they kidnapped all of their subjects?
Thomas is going to give himself a headache if he keeps thinking about it.
He tries to tell Teresa that he wants to talk to her, but it doesn't seem like it works.
He doesn’t know if she's even here. Or Ava, or Ratman. If they're not using the toothbrushes to mess with him, then it's been years. Ava and Ratman, unless they found their cure, might have succumbed to the Flare by now.
Teresa wouldn’t have, but Thomas can’t remember the full list of Immune Gladers, so he doesn’t let himself think about it. It’s difficult, because he doesn’t even have counting tiles to distract him.
He tries to remember what color toothbrush he got after yellow, last time. Was it the purple or the dark blue? Or maybe it was the pink.
He should have been paying better attention last time, and then he’d know already. Maybe he would even know the way out by now.
The next toothbrush is purple, and Thomas can only despair over how little information it gives him. There’s nothing helpful. He should only have three more colors after this one, he should know something by now!
He tries reaching out to Teresa again, but she’d been better at their telepathy than him. For a long time, probably. If what he remembers from the Changing is correct. If she gets it, she doesn’t respond.
He’d take ‘Captain Gally’ as a conversation partner right now, even though he’s pretty sure they’d end up fighting. They’re better than they were in the Glade, but if they were trapped together again it probably wouldn’t take long for them to come to blows.
He stares at the door wistfully. There’s no way they’d let him get so thin he could fit through the food slot. He wouldn’t be able to get his head and shoulders through, anyway. He just wants to leave.
“Can I leave now?”
He doesn’t expect a response, but he probably wouldn’t have heard it if one came. Has his voice always sounded like that? Or is it just echoing back at him?
He’d thought he’d been doing a good job, talking to himself and counting his food and everything. But it hasn’t been enough to save his voice from getting rough. He clears his throat a few times, but doesn’t speak until he has food to count again.
When he’s thinking about his food, he’s not thinking about his voice.
The dark blue toothbrush doesn’t have any clues, either. Thomas throws it against the wall and screams until his voice gives out.
He stays awake as long as they let him, trying to catch the person changing out his toothbrush and towels and he never does.
He thinks about throwing the apples in his nightstand, too. It would probably be more satisfying than a toothbrush. But he doesn’t trust WCKD enough to give up any food, in case he needs it.
Thomas tries to hide the pink toothbrush, not that he has many places to hide anything. Maybe he needs to keep all of them and put them together so that he can find a pattern that way, because he’s not finding one in the pictures.
A brown toothbrush is on the sink the next day, and Thomas can’t find the pink brush anywhere.
He remembers when he first got to the Glade, wondering how they hadn’t given up yet. It’s so much easier to reach out with trembling fingers and grasp at hope when it’s the only thing he has. (Physically, he’s grasping at his arms with untrimmed nails.)
No routine to keep him busy, keep him moving. Nothing else to think about.
What good does this data do WCKD? Thomas has never been able to decide, and they’ll probably never tell him.
He’s tired. He wants to leave, but there’s nothing he can use here to get out and his only idea has completely fallen apart.
Thomas lets the food trays pile up for a few days before he goes back to eating. Long enough that the smell starts to make him gag without even getting out of bed.
It’s the only form of control he has.
Thomas compares the new light blue toothbrush to the pictures he has of the last one, and the pattern is different.
Okay, so maybe it’s the colors that go together, and not the patterns. That still means he’s missed one of the patterns already, but maybe he can figure it out anyway. Thomas will get out of here or die trying.
He’s stopped trying to reach out to Teresa, though he’s been catching himself talking out loud as if she were here with him. Sometimes he has conversations with Chuck. Sometimes it’s Newt or Minho, or even Brenda.
Thomas wishes that surprised him more, but he’s been alone for so long that he doesn’t know what his other options would be. It’s not like he hadn’t already been talking to his food, anyway. This is just another form of that.
He gets a couple more apples, and puts them in his nightstand with the others. The oldest ones haven’t gone mushy or molded yet, though Thomas hasn’t bitten into them to see what’s inside. They don’t even give him flimsy knives to cut his food with, so he can’t check unless he wants to eat one.
Maybe they’re genetically engineered to be shelf-stable for a long time. Thomas doesn’t know if that’s something WCKD would have a hand in, but maybe they did. Or maybe it’s not a recent change.
It doesn’t matter, anyway. He’ll leave them there until he has to eat them or until they go bad.
He wakes up and the lights are off. Does WCKD have power outages? Surely they must have generators.
He doesn’t manage to stay awake long enough to get out of bed. Thomas does have some interesting dreams, though. One is about a stampede of elephants, which he’s pretty sure are extinct, and he doesn’t think that they stampede anyway. But what does he know?
The other is about dodo birds, which have been extinct for centuries. They’d been saying his name. Thomas doesn’t know that much about them–extinct birds weren’t on WCKD’s priority list, apparently–but he doesn’t think that they were able to speak.
Thomas takes as long of a shower as he can when he wakes up for real, thinking over what little he can remember about his dreams. The water shuts off automatically around what feels like twenty minutes, though Thomas knows he’ll never be sure. Especially not now, with his sense of time as warped as it is. It doesn’t turn back on, and he doesn’t expect it to. Maybe tomorrow.
While he’s trying to figure out how long he was in the shower for, the dreams slip to the back of his mind, details fading away and leaving only a sense of strangeness.
He doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night again.
When the green toothbrush appears, Thomas doesn’t use it for a few days. He hardly does anything other than stare at the pictures and try to put together a pattern. There’s a drawing app on the tablet, and he traces over the pattern lines to try and isolate something that he might not be able to see while it’s on a rounded surface.
He doesn’t find anything, but the door opens anyway.
Thomas doesn’t look even when there are hands on his arms, trying to take the tablet and toothbrush away. He grips them tightly, ready to scratch and bite if he needs to. He needs these.
“Greenie, come on, you’re scaring me here.” Thomas knows this voice. Hadn’t he just wished he could speak to Gally? Maybe not quite that, but something like it.
He’s probably hallucinating now.
“I have to get out. I have to figure out the pattern so I can open the door, Gally, just leave me alone so I can finish it!”
“Thomas, the door was unlocked.”
“No, it wasn’t. It can’t be that simple.”
“I walked right in.”
“They changed the door. They put a new lock on. It can’t be that easy, there has to be something I have to solve. I always have to solve something, I have to figure it out before I can leave.”
“No, we can just leave. I don’t know if it’s been that way the whole time, but we can leave. I’m making you leave.” Gally sounds like he’s trying to convince someone, and that makes Thomas more sure that he’s making the whole thing up. Gally’s not here. No one is here, because it’s always going to be him by himself in the end. That’s how WCKD made him start, and that’s how they’re going to make him end. Alone.
“I tried the door.” He must have. He must have, right? He wouldn’t… he wouldn’t not try the door. It’s the simplest solution, the first thing to do.
But he hadn’t. He hadn’t, because he’d convinced himself that it was going to be harder than that. That it had to be harder than that.
He still doesn’t let go of the tablet or the toothbrush; Gally’s given up on getting them out of his grasp.
“No, I didn’t. I didn’t even try. It can’t be this easy. It’s not supposed to be this easy.”
“Thomas, come on, I’ve got to get you outta here. You’re bleeding.”
“You never call me Thomas. You’re not real.”
“Slim it, shuckface, we’re leaving. I don’t know what’s goin’ on in that klunk head of yours, but I’ll carry you if I have to.” That’s what Gally sounds like. Maybe it is Gally, then.
Gally doesn’t make Thomas leave anything behind, and he even agrees to carry the apples instead of Thomas.
He keeps up the steady stream of talking he’s been doing recently, not really aware that he’s speaking every thought that comes to mind.
“–haven’t had anyone to talk to in so long, I think it’s been like three years. Maybe longer. Because of the toothbrushes.” Thomas doesn’t pause for anyone else to speak, and he hardly notices that Minho’s there until he’s forced to look him in the eye.
“Gal, what did they do to him?”
“Just put him in a room alone, I think. He thinks the toothbrushes are his way out. The door wasn’t even locked. He’s been talking to himself like this the whole time.”
“Hermanos, we can figure this all out when we’re safe. Move it.” Jorge? He doesn’t look much older. Neither does Gally or Minho, they all look about the same. Maybe they got haircuts or something, but that’s it.
“How long has it been?” It’s the first thing he’s aware of saying since Gally first got to his room.
“About six months.”
“That’s wrong. You’re supposed to change toothbrushes every three months, and I’ve had five colors twice and two colors three times.” That’s right, he knows it is. “One of them got taken early, but it should have been at least five years.”
“No, Thomas.”
The only reason Thomas doesn’t drop the tablet and the toothbrush is because Minho’s grabbing at him.
He doesn’t know where they’re going, he doesn’t know who else is there, and it doesn’t matter because Thomas doesn’t know how he got things so wrong.
It was supposed to be a test.
It was supposed to be difficult.
Thomas shouldn’t have gotten things this wrong. He’s supposed to be smart. He’s supposed to solve puzzles and fix things.
Gally and Minho don’t make him put a door on their cabin until it starts to snow, and the only lock it has is a simple latch to keep it from swinging open in the wind.
This doesn’t stop Thomas from spending hours staring at it if he’s left on his own, but they’re working on that.
Usually he’s just not left alone. Especially when he starts talking to Teresa or Chuck.
By the time it’s warm enough for the blanket door to suffice, he can handle a few hours alone in the cabin without talking to the door, so they leave it up.
The scars on his arms have faded a little more by then, too. They’re never going to go away–infection had set into the oldest of the wounds by the time Gally found him and he’s lucky it hadn’t spread upward–but when everyone knows what happened, no one asks any questions.
Thomas doesn’t remember making them, doesn’t remember digging his nails in again and again. He doesn’t think he wants to. Maybe he did it in his sleep. Maybe he was awake and just didn’t notice. He’s never going to know.
He doesn’t remember a lot of what happened right after they left, either. He knows he thought Gally wasn’t real. Actually leaving? Nothing. It’s normal, apparently, but it unnerves him more than he’ll ever admit. That he doesn’t remember what he said and did that makes Minho and Gally and Jorge watch him so closely.
He doesn’t want to ask them, not yet. Maybe he will, someday. When he’s wrapped his head around his five years of isolation only being six months, when he’s figured out how to stop talking to ghosts whenever he’s alone.
Maybe then. Maybe they’ll tell him before that, slip it into their stories of what they did while he was in that room.
Thomas doesn’t care, as long as they don’t make him go back.

17 Black and White Bathroom Ideas for a Contrasting Effect
Designing a black and white bathroom is a popular choice for renovations, helping to modernize the house and create a more modern bathroom appearance. However, there are endless options and styles to choose from, which can quickly become overwhelming and make an already large undertaking seem that much bigger. To make the task of finding inspiration just a bit easier, you can find the most inspiring black-and-white bathroom ideas in the list below to get that custom look you’ve been dreaming of.
Make White Tiles Pop With Black Grout and a Black Ceiling
This bathroom uses a combination of different titles for a unique visual texture. Vertical white subway tile and much smaller square tile both use dark grout, resulting in a cohesive appearance. The large, rimless mirror strengthens the sleek look of the room, while the two-faucet sink mimics the style of a double vanity without the extra bulk. Silver plumbing and natural wood and brown accents complete the look.

Bring Visual Texture into the Space by Blending Tile Patterns
Similarly to the previous photo, this bathroom pairs two different tiles for a chic visual appeal. The black hexagonal tile floor and herringbone tile walls with their contrasting grout create a unique black-and-white bathroom design. Black shower hardware, interesting decor pieces, and fluffy white towels decorate the space while pairing well with the warm wood finish of the vanity.

Create a Dramatic Bathroom With Black Walls and White Cabinets
This dark and moody black and white bathroom incorporates multiple different materials in its design. Dark wood and exposed beams along the roof mirror the rich wood flooring. The uncommon elongated black tile and dark grout provide a dramatic contrast to the bright white vanity that’s wall-mounted to create a floating effect. Long pull handles on the cabinets also serve to pique interest, especially when combined with the uniquely designed mirror and elegant lighting.

Embrace a Classic Look With Checkerboard Flooring and Dark Wood Accents
A black-and-white color scheme can help a small bathroom make a big impact. White tiles line the walls, creating a classic style that’s only enhanced by the checkerboard floor. The white sink and shower curtain are balanced well by the black storage cabinet, and the white toilet with a black lid is the perfect bridge between the two. Silver hardware throughout is the right choice for this space, as is the glass divider separating the shower area from the rest of the room.

Make a Bold Statement With Unique Black and White Tile Throughout the Room
This bold master bathroom is bursting with personality and is a perfect example of how patterns can be used for a unique and dramatic effect. By continuing the design from the floor and along the walls surrounding the bathtub, the eye is immediately drawn to this area as the focal point. Solid black paint on the adjacent wall creates contrast with the pattern without distracting from it or disturbing the theme. The unique decorative chair is an excellent finishing touch for this bathroom.

Pair White Walls and Ceiling With Black Floor Tile, Trim, and Cabinetry
For a more modern space, try blending different shapes, patterns, and materials within the same bathroom. This example photo uses square white tiles, hexagonal floor tile, a round mirror, and an abstract rug to make a visually appealing bathroom. Black trim and cabinetry tie in well with the flooring, allowing the room to feel more balanced overall. A few accessories in a new color can bring in an interesting pop or two like the subtle copper tones do here.

Place a Checkerboard Floor, Black Curtain, and Subtle Black Accents in a Solid White Bathroom
Classic white subway tile is an effective tool to brighten a small bathroom with limited lighting. This photo shows how this black and white bathroom packs a lot into minimal square footage, using black accents to provide contrast and depth into the room and prevent the white from becoming overpowering. The custom shower unit also creates an air of originality, as does the creative placement of the faucet on the vanity.

Use Brass Accents to Bring an Air of Luxury to Your Black and White Bathroom
Similar in style to some of our previous modern black-and-white bathroom ideas, this photo example uses a combination of black hexagonal floor tile and white walls as the base for the space. However, it then builds upon this look for a more custom appearance by using brass hardware throughout. The almost vintage feel of these items transforms this space from a standard black and white bathroom to a stunning room that will stand the test of time.

Combine Modern and Retro Design Style to Create a Space Unique to Your Home
This bathroom with black marble floor tiles and white walls showcases incredible natural lighting and a freestanding tub perfect for a long, relaxing bath. Light natural wood accents and plant life help to make a refreshing bathroom that anyone will enjoy spending time in. The section of plain white paint along the top of the walls is a great touch, serving as a transition area from the tiles to the ceiling.

Show Off Your Personality With Boldly Patterned Tiles and a Stunning Black Sink
Your black-and-white bathroom doesn’t have to be formulaic in its design. A fun and funky tile floor or walls can make all the difference. This photo example shows a one-of-a-kind dotted tile covering the walls and a stunning black sink used as both an accent piece and an anchor for the space. Though this look works extremely well in a half bath or powder room setup, it can be even more remarkable in a larger bathroom with a black tub or shower to match.

Lean Into Simplicity With a Black and White Bathroom and Laundry Room Combo
This sleek black and white bathroom combines many of the design elements we’ve seen so far. That being said, unlike the other ideas, this example photo tackles the added complication of designing a bathroom that also has a laundry area included. Fortunately, a black-and-white bathroom palette can easily handle this challenge. Gray and light tan accents work well in this bathroom, and a mirror with a built-in medicine cabinet can help with storage.

Make Your All-White Bathroom Pop With Minimal Touches of Black
This master bathroom also follows the trend of hexagonal black tile on the floor and white square tile on the walls but with a decently sized bathtub with a built-in shower. Multiple recessed shelves keep everything that’s frequently used within easy reach, creating a relaxing place to unwind in the bath after a long and stressful day. Read the full article

How to Match Mapei Timberwolf Grout with Popular Tile Colors
Matching tile and grout can significantly impact your overall design. Mapei Timberwolf grout is a popular choice due to its warm, neutral tone, making it versatile for various tile types. Whether you're working with ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone, finding the right grout color can tie your whole space together, creating a seamless and aesthetic look.
Why Mapei Timberwolf Grout?
Mapei Timberwolf grout has a medium grayish-brown tone, offering a natural look that complements various tile styles. It’s neither too dark nor too light, which makes it perfect for blending with a range of popular tile colors. This grout is also known for its durability and stain resistance, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas.
Top Tile Colors That Match Mapei Timberwolf Grout
1. White Tiles
White tiles are classic and versatile, often used in modern, minimalist, or farmhouse designs. Mapei Timberwolf grout works particularly well with white tiles because the warm undertones of the grout add a touch of softness, preventing the starkness that sometimes comes with using white tiles. This combination also provides a subtle contrast that highlights the grout lines without overwhelming the clean look of the white tiles.
Best for:
Kitchens with white subway tiles
Bathrooms with white hexagon or mosaic tiles
Backsplashes in contemporary spaces
2. Gray Tiles
Gray tiles come in various shades, from light dove gray to dark charcoal. Timberwolf grout’s neutral brownish-gray tone complements these tiles without clashing. When paired with lighter gray tiles, Timberwolf grout creates a smooth transition, maintaining a cohesive design. With darker grays, it subtly softens the overall look, adding warmth to otherwise cool-toned tiles.
Best for:
Living rooms with large-format gray tiles
Bathrooms featuring light gray floor tiles
Walk-in showers with dark gray tiles
3. Beige or Taupe Tiles
Beige and taupe tiles are perfect for creating a warm, inviting space. The earthy tones of Timberwolf grout seamlessly blend with beige tiles, offering a unified, harmonious appearance. This grout color avoids creating harsh lines, making the space feel soft and cohesive, which is especially important in areas where you want a more natural, relaxed vibe.
Best for:
Kitchen floors with beige porcelain tiles
Entryways with taupe stone tiles
Bathrooms with travertine or beige ceramic tiles
4. Marble or Stone Tiles
Natural stone tiles like marble have unique veining and color variations, which can sometimes make grout selection tricky. Timberwolf grout pairs beautifully with marble or stone tiles because it complements the natural shades found in the stone, like grays, browns, and beiges. This grout enhances the elegance of the tiles without drawing attention away from their intricate patterns.
Best for:
High-end kitchens with marble floors
Luxurious bathroom countertops or shower walls
Entryways featuring natural stone flooring
How to Select the Right Tile-Grout Combination
When matching grout to tile, always consider the following factors:
Contrast vs. Blend: Decide if you want the grout to stand out or blend with the tiles. For instance, pairing Timberwolf grout with white tiles creates contrast, making the grout lines pop. Conversely, when paired with beige or taupe tiles, it creates a seamless look.
Tile Size: Smaller tiles often have more grout lines, so a subtle, complementary grout color like Timberwolf can help prevent the space from looking too busy.
Room Size: For smaller rooms, a matching tile and grout color can create a more spacious feel. Timberwolf grout works well to create subtle cohesion without overwhelming small spaces.
Lighting: Natural and artificial lighting can affect how the grout color appears. Before finalizing your choice, test Timberwolf grout with your tile under the room’s lighting conditions to ensure you get the desired effect.
Tips for Applying Mapei Timberwolf Grout
To ensure the best results when using Mapei Timberwolf grout, consider the following tips:
Use Spacers for Even Grout Lines: Proper spacing between tiles ensures a uniform look and makes the grout lines appear more professional.
Seal the Grout: While Mapei grout is resistant to stains, applying a grout sealer can provide extra protection, especially in areas exposed to moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens.
Clean the Tiles Before and After Grouting: To avoid grout residue sticking to the tiles, ensure they are clean before application. After the grout has dried, use a damp sponge to clean off any excess.
Test on a Small Area First: Grout color can sometimes change slightly as it dries, so it's a good idea to apply it to a small section first to ensure it achieves the desired color.
Conclusion
Mapei Timberwolf grout is a fantastic choice for a variety of tile colors. Whether you're working with classic white, contemporary gray, warm beige, or natural stone tiles, Timberwolf grout’s neutral and earthy tones will enhance your design, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal. With careful consideration of contrast, room size, and lighting, you can achieve a beautifully cohesive look that stands the test of time.

The Cafe Pt.I (Rewritten Barista)
As promised, I’m working through finishing my unfinished series - and that includes the Barista AU I had written long ago. I decided it was best to rewrite it considering the first part was originally published 200+ days ago. I’m aiming for 3 parts for this “one-shot AU” but we’ll see where it goes. Please be patient with me - my academic course load is extremely heavy and finding time to write is difficult but I will finish everything I said I would. I’m actually pretty proud of this but if it flops I never wrote it :)
Pairing: Kamilah x MC (Amy)
Word Count: 4505 words I’m shocked (I usually get to about 1600-2000 words)
Taglist: I’m not tagging anyone until I know people want to be tagged for this because I’m nervous and I hate being annoying!!!! If you want to be tagged for a specific pairing please let me know - I’ll try to keep track and remember to actually tag because I’m a forgetful dumbass!
Amy groggily rolled over in her bed, the amount of sleep she was getting had become oddly suspicious because she would never be able to get up before 7 on her own. She rubbed her face gently, her sheets warm and smooth against her skin. She grabbed her phone from the nightstand, her eyes widening in shock as she read the time on the screen.
Monday March 30 5:40 am
“Fucking hell I thought I set an alarm!” Amy groaned as she threw the sheets to the side, huffing as she opened the clock app to see, she in fact, did not set an alarm. She sighed, shaking her head as she rushed to the bathroom.
“Damn it Amy...you need this job…”
She texted Zig, a mutual friend of Emily Day who introduced them their freshman year of college at Hartfeld before Amy had transferred to Belviore University in New York. Zig graduated and moved to New York and opened a small cafe, only a few years later.
Zig, I’m going to be late. I missed my alarm this morning. I swear I’ll stay for closing and I won’t be late tomorrow.
LMAO, Amy if you didn’t set an alarm just say that, I had a feeling this would happen so I told you we opened an hour before we actually do. We don’t open until 7 on Mondays, just Tuesdays-Fridays.
I am literally going to murder you 0_0. You should prepare to be launched into outer space for this crime.
Lol I look forward to it - see you at 7.
Amy turned on the shower, as she grabbed a towel and her shower products from the cabinet, placing them beside the shower door. She discarded her clothes, put her shower playlist on, hopped into the shower and felt a wave of relief that she didn’t blow her first day. After Amy had performed her world tour, she stepped out of the shower with a shiver, the cool air a contrast to her very hot skin. She wrapped herself in the fuzzy towel, briefly glancing at the time, 6:02. She walked out of the bathroom, dropping the towel onto the floor as she opened her closet while she scanned her options for a “casual” outfit that would suffice. She put on her favorite bra and underwear, something about the red lingerie made her feel confident, before she slipped into a pair of dark blue denim skinny jeans. She paired the pants with a black t-shirt as she smiled at herself in the mirror.
“Not bad Amy, not bad at all.”
She walked over to her small vanity, one she had built with her father as a teenager over the summer before she left for college. It was one of her most prized possessions, one of the only things she had to remind her of him before he disappeared without a trace. She closed her eyes, recalling the memory fondly before she began to apply a small amount of makeup, just enough to hide her tiredness from the public. She stood from the desk, pleased with her appearance as she made her way to the small apartment kitchen. The empty beer bottles and ps4 controllers cluttered the kitchen as Amy smiled, having remembered celebrating the job with her suitemate Lily. She threw the bottles away and plugged the remotes in for a charge, Lily would thank her for that later. She opened the freezer, making herself two premade waffles as she checked her social media. It might have partially been the exhaustion but those waffles were the best Amy ever had, she wiped her mouth clean and grabbed her bag from the nearby chair. She shot a brief text to Lily, to let her know she hadn’t been kidnapped.
Morning Lily! I went to the cafe for work, just so you don’t end up thinking I got myself kidnapped. Love you, see you tonight! Try not to drink all of the alcohol.
Amy followed Zig’s text directions through the streets of the city, the bustle of traffic, the mass of pedestrians and the loud construction noises distracting Amy from her path. Amy had never really been in New York’s financial district before, the other civilians' appearances shifting from “Naked Cowboy of Times Square” to “Businessman” only a few streets apart. She glanced at her phone as it instructed her to take a right.
“Oof-”
Amy jolted at the scalding hot coffee that was hot on her skin, her head turning to meet a woman’s irritated gaze, taking note of the coffee cup that was in her hands. She was dressed like all the other businessmen and women who passed by - her maroon suit now covered in coffee as she huffed in annoyance. Amy met her deep brown eyes that burned right through her, her whole body freezing up as she watched the woman’s lips move. Amy stood in a daze, only coming back to herself when the woman waved her hand in front of her, her face filled with exasperation.
“I’m so sorry. It’s my first day and I’m kind of lost-”
“Watch where you’re going, this suit is probably worth more than you.” Her voice was silky and satisfying, and oddly soothing given the fact she had probably just stained a $2,000 suit. Amy rushed to open her wallet, holding out a wet 50$ to the woman. The business woman scoffed as she walked away, leaving Amy in a confused state outside of the cafe.
“Fuck.” Amy sighed, moving to collect her bag as she walked through the cafe door, Zig raised his eyebrows at her as she made her way behind the counter.
“Well that’s a look.” He jested, Amy turning her head and giving him a death glare as he tossed an apron to her. “Nobody will notice, you can cover it with this. There’s paper towels in the back.” Amy dropped her bag in the break room, gently wiping the coffee away and putting the surprisingly fashionable apron on. When she walked out from the back her jaw dropped as she spotted the woman from earlier standing on the other side of the counter. Their eyes met and the woman’s gaze quickly changed from annoyed to very annoyed at the sight of Amy.
“Kamilah, you’re back. Wanted to pick up some date-nut pinwheels?”
“No, I need another black coffee.” She turned back to Zig with a smile, he gave a small nod as Amy began to brew the coffee for her. She placed the lid carefully onto the fresh cup and handed it out to the woman, their fingers brushing for a moment, a blush creeping onto Amy’s cheeks.
“Thank you.” Her tone was less aggressive than it had been in their first encounter, Amy finally calm enough to take note of the woman’s features. Her brown silky hair that looked like it belonged in a conditioner commercial, her defined jawline and subtle eyeshadow that accentuated her eyes. She watched the way her lips moved as she talked to Zig, Amy feeling her heart jump at the sound of her laugh - light and golden. Amy watched her leave, every step she took she took with such confidence that Amy found herself wanting to follow her out the door.
“You could be less obvious, you know?” Zig playfully nudged Amy, nearly knocking her over as she shook her head in denial.
“No! I wasn’t!” Amy sighed as she rubbed her temples, Zig’s infectious laugh filling the empty cafe. Amy playfully punched his shoulder as a group of well dressed men stepped through the threshold, Amy moving behind the register to take their orders. The day passed, Amy learning how oddly specific some people like their coffee, and learning all of Zig’s secrets to the perfect iced coffee. Amy looked at the clock as Zig walked to lock the front door - finally closing time.
“Some of these orders...like ‘I’ll have the grande iced mocha no foam soy hexagon vortex hypotenuse’” Amy waved her hands around as Zig tried to contain a laugh, wiping down the counter as Amy hung her apron up.
“Amy you’re horrible.” Zig made a good attempt at seriousness, their eyes meeting before they continued to laugh which made closing pass by much faster. Zig grabbed the mass of leftover desserts from their respective containers, hovering them over the garbage before Amy stopped him.
“Oh, did you want these?”
“No, but I can find a better place for them than the trash.”
“Where? Your stomach?”
“No, the food bank is on the route back to my apartment. We shouldn’t be wasteful, and besides - who wouldn’t love a raspberry crown?”
“You’ve got a point. I’ll bag these for you then, if you could sweep the floor and put the chairs on the tables that’d be great.”
When all the cleaning and closing procedures were done Amy headed for the door with her bag in hand, Zig gently tapping her shoulder and holding out an envelope, a key to the cafe and the bag of desserts.
“Okay so I know what’s in here but what is this? A resignation letter?” Amy pouted her bottom lip as Zig rolled his eyes so far back Amy wasn’t sure if they’d come back.
“It’s your share of the tips from today, and the wrapped pastries. Thanks for that suggestion by the way, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that myself.” Zig rubbed the back of his neck as he looked around the pristine cafe, the windows reflecting the moonlight and the tile shimmering as if it were just installed. “Bloody hell, the place looks good...no great. Thank you Amy. Come on let's get outta here, go home - I’ll see you tomorrow at 6. Actually, let me make sure you set 3 different alarms, give me your phone.” Zig held out his hand after he locked the front door, Amy reluctantly handing her iphone over as he set 3 different alarms, all 5 minutes apart. He looked up at her for a moment, smirking before handing her phone back to her and walking off into the city. Amy rolled her eyes, he probably took a selfie on her camera but when she went to check, there was nothing but memes and occasional group photos -what did Zig smirk at then? Amy was too tired to think of it, she made a swift beeline to the food bank, opening the doors and dropping the brown bag of desserts off before making her trip back to the apartment.
The door opened with a creak, all of the lights turned off as Amy carefully navigated to her room. She switched her lamp on, letting it provide a dim light that didn’t blind Amy because of its intensity. She tossed her bag onto the bed, as she pulled her shirt over her head in one rapid motion. She desperately stripped, throwing her dirty clothes into the laundry basket as she changed into clean lingerie. She slipped into her favorite pair of pajama shorts and pulling her favorite hoodie over her bra - shirts were overrated anyways. Amy crawled onto her bed, crossing her legs while she put her headphones on, pulling up her favorite late-night playlist and letting the slowed music soothe her. She caught a glance at the envelope Zig had given her, she reached over for it and opened it carefully - baffled at the amount of cash laying inside. She slowly laid each bill out, counting the total twice to make sure she hadn’t miscalculated. Working at a cafe in New York’s financial district was definitely going to help her and Lily catch up on their rent and not get evicted. She smiled, tucking away 25% for herself, taking enough for her share of the rent and putting the rest into her locked safe - she’d been saving for a trip to Hawaii since she graduated. She stifled a yawn, closing the safe and tucking herself back into her warm sheets, taking her headphones off and closing her eyes for the night.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The alarm woke Amy up with it’s loud and very obnoxious beeping, Amy wanting nothing more than to throw the phone into the thermosphere. She drowsily stood from her bed, gently tucking the sheets neatly back into place as she turned off the following alarms. She sighed, rubbing her head as she changed into a simple outfit and left out the door to the cafe.
Amy arrived at the cafe, unlocked the front door and turned the lights on, relocking the door behind her because she didn’t need anyone startling her. She moved behind the counter, dropping her bag in the lounge and putting an apron on. She checked the coffee filters, gave the blenders a good washing, set out creamer, sugar and other coffee essentials on the counter and filled supplies back up. Zig suddenly walked through the door, a smile on his face as Amy finished supplying the countertop and putting the pastries out on display, letting Zig prepare himself for opening.
“You’re early. I’m shocked. College Amy is having a stroke right now.” Amy knocked him in the side, Zig falling back a few steps as he shook his head and put his hands in the air in surrender. “Alright alright no need for violence, come on, let’s open.” Zig turned the “open” sign on and only a minute later did Kamilah appear in the cafe, her suit perfectly fitted, her hair smoothly cascading around her head and down her shoulders and her face relaxed and composed.
“Good morning Kamilah, what can I get for you?” Zig gestured to the display of desserts and the variety of coffee combinations on the menu above their heads. Kamilah smiling as Zig waved his hands back and forth, Kamilah letting out a soft chuckle.
“Just a large black coffee and maybe a date-nut pinwheel.” Kamilah spoke to Zig in almost a tender way, as if they were siblings or long-term friends. Amy selected a pinwheel, gently placing it into a small bag and sliding it over the counter towards Kamilah as she began to brew the coffee.
“How’s Ahmanet Financial?” Zig leaned over the counter, his defined arms nearly breaking through the sleeves of his white shirt. Kamilah tucked the pinwheel bag into a hidden pocket on the inside of her blazer before she turned back to face Zig.
“It’s very successful, our stocks are soaring and we just secured a new business partner.” Kamilah looked proud and for good reason - Ahmanet financial was one of the most powerful corporations out there. Amy topped her coffee off with a lid and handed it to her, their eyes meeting for a moment before Amy turned away, feeling her cheeks turning hot. Kamilah checked her watch, a movado 47 rose gold watch that cost way more than anything Amy had ever come close to owning. “Zig I’d love to chat some other day but I’m afraid I’ll be late if I don’t leave now.”
She quickly made her way out the door, the bell ringing softly as Kamilah strided away. Amy leaned over the counter with a sigh, Zig nudging her softly.
“You could be less obvious Amy,” his annoying face smirking at Amy as she rolled her eyes, “you used to be so slick back in college.”
“Shut the fuck up.” Amy threw an empty coffee cup at him as a blonde girl walked into the cafe, her eyes glued to her phone as she recited her order at a rate that nobody could understand. Amy sighed, Zig giving her a pained glance as she went to mix the complicated coffee order. Amy fought back a laugh as Zig found a way to run away to the back when the girl asked for his phone number. Once Amy finished mixing her coffee and sent her out the cafe doors Zig poked his head out of the lounge - his eyes scanning for her.
“Is she gone?” Amy snorted as Zig stepped out from the doorway, his hands running through his hair as he let his shoulders relax. “My god I hate teenagers - they turn eighteen and all of a sudden think they can fuck anyone. I’m like 5 years older than her at least!”
“Relax buddy, let’s just get through the rest of the day. I’ll handle all the teenage brats and you can handle all the nasty men.” Amy gave him a cheeky grin as they teamwork-ed their way through the rest of the day.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Finally.” Amy rested the broom on the wall, taking in the pristine cafe as Zig finished wiping down the counters. “What a day.”
“Thank god it’s over.”
“Zig?”
“Yeah?”
“Does Kamilah always come by the cafe right when we open?”
Zig perked his head up, his brows raised to the top of his head as Amy felt a blush creep up her cheeks, her hands growing sweaty as Zig remained silent.
“She always comes as soon as we open, she has to be at work early since she is the CEO. Although she never rests, despite everything I’ve told her.” Zig’s head shot to his phone as it buzzed, a text from Emily appearing on the screen and Zig hastily typed away.
“Everything okay Zig?” Amy had a worried expression on her face as Zig let out a long sigh.
“There’s a road trip for Kaitlyn’s band that leaves in two days that lasts for a week that our group is going on and I can’t go because I need to run the cafe-”
“I can handle it for a week.” Amy spoke firmly, Zig’s eyes widening before he let out a chuckle.
“What if you burn it down?”
“I won’t but then I guess you just have to trust me. Come on Zig - you need a break and you damn well know it. Get out of here for a week.”
“I hate that you’re right. Fine, but if the cafe isn’t standing when I get back, you’re toast.” They both laughed and finished up closing.
Amy walked towards the food bank, a brisk breeze prompting her to make it one speedy trip so she could bask in her heated apartment. A shriek came from the alley as Amy turned her gaze to see where the yell had come from, a red pair of eyes looking right at her in the darkness. She felt her heart beating out of her chest as she forced her feet to a run, her heart pounding like a drum and ringing in her ears as she huffed through the front doors of the bank - placing the bag on the counter and racing back to her apartment without turning back.
“Hey girl how was-” Lily sat on the couch with a coke in her hand and the television remote in the other, her smile fading as she met Amy’s eyes. “Amy, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost…”
“I think I’m just hallucinating from exhaustion,” Amy dropped her bag on the floor and took a seat on the couch beside Lily, “anyways tell me about you. We haven’t really had time since we both started working more.”
“Well you should sleep soon but I think we’ll be able to hold the rent for the next few months - with all the money you’re bringing in now in addition to the money my app has started to bring in - I think we’ll be more than fine.” Lily nudged her shoulder, offering Amy a can of coke with a smile as The Vampire Diaries played on the TV.
“Vampires are so overrated.” Amy groaned as she watched Lily’s eyes become glued to the screen.
“Some of us have taste you know.”
“No, it’s because they’re not real Lily, and the fact that no vampire would ever be attracted to me.”
Lily rolled her eyes as Amy sipped on her coke, both of them laughing late into the night and being good friends in what had felt like a long time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amy unlocked the cafe doors and shuffled inside, locking the door behind her and leaving her bag on the counter. She hit the light switch as the lights slowly came flickering on as she tied the apron around the back of her neck. She quickly started and finished the morning set-up, the routine becoming second nature since Amy had always been a fast learner. She checked her phone, 6:49 am April 1, 2020.
“April fools day.” Amy smiled as she contemplated setting up a whipped cream prank on Zig, but decided not to against her deepest desire to see his shocked face. While thinking of ways to mess with Zig through the day, her mind came to test a theory - she began preparing two black coffees - before adding her own twists to one of them. Amy finished and admired her handiwork - the cups looked identical and Kamilah wouldn’t notice until she tasted it.
Kamilah walked in, her eyes scanning the cafe for Zig as she took a cautious step towards Amy who had a cute little grin on her face.
“Good morning Kamilah, here’s your coffee.” Amy handed her a black coffee, the one she had adjusted ever so slightly. She watched as Kamilah brought the cup to her lips, almost taking a sip, before she lowered the cup and leaned her face closer to Amy.
“What did you do to it? It smells different, and where’s Zig?” Kamilah arched a brow as Amy silently wondered how Kamilah could smell the difference.
“I took a twist with it, I made you your regular too in case you hate it...I just thought you should broaden your horizons…and Zig is coming. He just needs to pack, he’ll be gone after today for a week and I’ll be running the cafe.” Amy smiled softly at the woman who was now leaning dangerously close.
“I see. And if I hate it?”
“Then I’ll pay for both and I’ll never try to broaden your horizons again…” Amy frowned slightly as Kamilah finally sipped on the drink - her brown eyes widening as she took another, and another.
“It’s...actually pretty good...what did you do to it?” Kamilah took another sip as Amy bounced on her heels, a wide childish grin written across her face.
“I added a bit of cream and sugar and a bit of caramel! It’s how I like mine!” Amy took her hands behind her back and fiddled with them nervously as Kamilah smiled. Zig walked in just as the clock read 8:05 am and Kamilah left, turning at the door to smile at Amy one last time, lifting the cup up with a smile before entering her car.
“What’s that smile about Amy?” Zig wagged his fingers at Amy with a classic smirk as he prepared for the shift, Amy resting her head on both of her hands while she leaned over the counter - her legs kicking out behind her.
“Nothing.” Amy sighed and went back to brewing coffee, her hands aimlessly performing while her mind sat on nothing but the thought of Kamilah - and her damned perfect smile.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amy tossed her shoes off as she made her way through the apartment door, one shoe nearly knocking Lily’s head off as she pulled freshly fried chicken from the air fryer.
“Lily that smells AMAZING!” Amy squealed and made her way over to her, Lily slapping her hand away as she finished the two plates of waffles off with a chicken breast and syrup. “I swear I’ve got the best best friend…” Lily smiled as they both dug into the food, chatting away about their day until Amy let it slip out.
“And there’s this really hot customer-”
“Oh! Spill!” Lily wiggled in her seat like a child, eagerly waiting for Amy to elaborate as Amy stuffed her face with the rest of her waffles. “I’ll wait for you to finish.” Lily smirked and held Amy in an uncomfortable eye contact until Amy finally caved in.
“She comes in at opening time every single day, and always orders a black coffee. Although I got her to try something new today which I’m really proud of.” The subtle smile that crept up Amy’s face gave it all away to Lily as she let her ramble on, whilst she gave Amy the smirk she hated. “I’m simping aren’t I?”
“There’s nothing wrong with simping. But you have a chance here because Zig won’t be there so you can actually like...take your shot without him ever having to know,” Lily winked and whispered, “and you could totally fuck her in the back-”
“NOPE!” Amy stood up frantically, Lily holding her sides for support and nearly falling out of her chair as Amy rushed to clear her plate. “I hate you! Ohmygoddddddd.” Amy groaned as Lily fell to the floor, her eyes wet with tears at Amy’s reaction more than anything else.
“I’m going to bed!!”
“Goodnight! Love you Ames!!!”
“Love you too….annoying ass!”
Amy snorted as she changed into her sleepwear, her body becoming exhausted as she hit the mattress, falling asleep ridiculously fast.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Kamilah came through the door, right on time as Amy had come to expect. Amy gazed up from her phone, those dark brown eyes looking right at her as she handed Kamilah her usual black coffee, Kamilah holding it closely before clearing her throat.
“Can I have the one from yesterday as well?” Amy smiled at her as she began to mix her favorite coffee - Kamilah leaning over the counter to observe.
“I didn’t think you’d want it again.” Amy said as she added creamer to the mix, the coffee turning golden as she mixed it.
“A woman can’t appreciate a little variety in her life?” Kamilah leaned against the counter, her hair smoothly gliding over her maroon blazer as she tossed it back - taking a sip from her cup.
“No I just-” Amy topped the cup off with a bit of caramel before enclosing it with the lid, her hands sweaty as she handed it to Kamilah.
“You just?”
“Thought you’d always like your coffee like your personality.”
“Whatever do you mean by that?”
The way Kamilah was looking at Amy, she knew she had to choose her next words carefully.
“Dark, intimidating, a bit bitter at first sip,” Amy hesitated as Kamilah raised a brow, “an...acquired taste.”
“You’re intimidated by me?”
“Just a little…”
“Hmm, I suppose your coffee is like you if you want to expand your little analogy.” Kamilah glanced at her watch, her expression shifting from playful to work-oriented. Amy felt her heart drop a little as she recomposed herself - back to her refined and disciplined self. Kamilah made her way to the door, the two cups of coffee in her hands as she paused, turning back and looking at Amy - something different about it.
“It’s...sweet and comforting,” her voice was soft as she spoke, Amy’s cheeks turning very red, “like you.”

NATURAL QUARTZITE
From many centuries, marble and other types of natural stone have symbolized wealth and power when used for flooring and other surfaces in residential dwellings. In the ancient civilizations of Persia, Greece, and Italy, the hand labor involved in quarrying, cutting, and transporting natural stone meant that it was only the wealthiest citizens or the government itself who could afford to use these materials in their buildings. Although modern equipment and transportation systems now make it more accessible to more people, marble and other natural stone is still a building material that retains a royal Stone.
THICKNESS
Many people ask about the thicknesses of the travertine tiles. It may be because they are trying to minimize the impact the new floor is going to have on doors and counters. Sometimes its because they want to make sure its to use on the walls. Other times it’s just because they want the thinnest possible for handling purposes. Here are some nuggets that might help as far as Stone norms are concerned.
SIZES AVAILABLE WITH US
• 12″x12″ and smaller are usually going to be 3/8″ thick. A tile that is 3/8″ thick is going to weigh about 5.5 lbs per square foot. • 16″x16″ and 18″x18″ are usually going to be 1/2″ thick. A tile that is 1/2″ thick is going to weight about 6 lbs per square foot. • 24″x24″ tiles are usually going to be 5/8″ thick. A tile that is 5/8″ thick is going to weight about 8 lbs per square foot. • Keep in mind that custom thicknesses for each size are possible and slabs can be done in 1.5 cm and 2 cm thicknesses.
CREATING THE PERFECT NURSERY FOR TWINS
Residential trends come and go. It was not that long ago when condominium developers in large metro areas came up with the idea of designing floor plans without functional kitchens. The idea was that the advent of smartphone apps and food delivery services would prompt city dwellers to forgo cooking altogether. However, things turned out differently as homeowners these days are making design statements with gourmet kitchens that boost the overall value of their properties.
When it comes to flooring material for the kitchen, natural-stone tiles are the obvious choice. Cork, wood, and vinyl flooring have certain advantages, but they do not come close to matching the attractive look and sheer durability of natural stone. Here are some of the best options for natural-stone floors in the kitchen.
GRANITE
Granite is the best popular choice of stone in the use of domestic and commercial purposes. Granite is stain resistant and durable stone, it’s wide and colors make the most beautiful stone for a lifetime. Granites are usually found in makrana mountain ranges. Bhandari Marbles is a top leading granite company in India to produce quality and strongest granites. Our best granite is famous for the combination of beauty.
Granite is a great option for homeowners who have previously chosen granite slabs for their kitchen counters. Ideally, the floor tiles should be selected at the same time as the slabs for the counters for matching purposes. The granite looks great, and it also lasts for a very long time as long as it is properly maintained. Luckily for homeowners, cleaning and resealing granite can be accomplished by using a stone-safe granite cleaner and sealer. The granite looks best in gourmet kitchens.
LIMESTONE SLABS & TILES – Black Kota Lime Stone Exporter
Exporter of LIMESTONE SLABS & TILES – Black Kota LimeStone, Machine Cut Black Limestone, Black Kadappa. This material is ideal for kitchens with a rustic or traditional style. Limestone that has been extracted from quarries in the Middle East and Northern Africa tends to have a very attractive and unique look. As limestone is very porous, it is important to choose tiles with higher density, and the protective seal must be reapplied often.
MARBLE
Marble may seem like an unusual choice for the kitchen, but it should be noted that it is the metamorphic result of limestone being exposed to higher igneous temperatures, which causes a process of crystallization. Marble is very durable and will look great in any kitchen. However, it requires a professional finish to make the surface less slippery.
SLATE
Homeowners who favor a rustic or industrial look for their kitchen should consider slate flooring, particularly darker tones that are not prone to staining. The typical finish of slate makes it look natural with only a slight polish that highlights the nonslip texture. Slate tends to look very sharp when paired with kitchen cabinets that feature a light and natural wood finish.
TRAVERTINE
Many regions of India choose travertine for their kitchen and dining room floors for three reasons: it looks great, lasts long, and can be easily maintained as long as it has been adequately honed, filled, and sealed. When chosen for the kitchen floor, travertine should be finished with a natural look instead of a glossy appearance. Travertine is ideal for open floor plans decorated with natural stone. A stone slab is a big stone, flat and of little thickness, that are generally used for paving floors, for covering walls or as headstones.

Tiled bathrooms
For your main wall tile, you could have a lighter color marble with subtle veining in a large size. When choosing your marble tile, consider using more than one shade and size. The natural veining of the marble tile can maintain your chosen color scheme while also breaking up the color to keep it from becoming monochromatic. It’s an ideal choice if you want a black, grey, or neutral-colored bathroom. The tiles are typically larger, which means you’ll have fewer grout lines. Marble tile is elegant and will immediately add a feeling of luxury to your bathroom. Natural stone or wood grain are popular because they add life and color variance to the tile.įor more grey bathroom tile ideas, click here. Lighter is going to keep your bathroom feeling bright and fresh. Dark is going to look more masculine and sleeker. The first step is to choose whether you want a light or dark grey. This gives you complete freedom in how you decorate your finished bathroom. Finally, you can pair grey with any metal and accent it with any color shade in the rainbow. There are a ton of shades that vary from a near-black charcoal color to a super light and almost white color. It’s also softer than using black or white. Grey is a modern and beautiful neutral alternative to tans and browns. Don’t discard it as “depressing” or “dull” before considering it for your bathroom renovation. However, if you have a large master bathroom with a walk-in shower, you can use your contemporary tile to define the shower stall space from the rest of the room. This is especially important in a small bathroom when breaking up the space can make it feel smaller. Modern bathrooms will use the same tile throughout the entire bathroom, starting on the wall and continuing throughout the shower area. Plan to use your contemporary tile from floor to ceiling in your bathroom tile design. However, if you prefer porcelain tile, you’ll still be able to find several options. It’s durable and has a waterproof coating. Most modern wall tile design consists of ceramic tile. Then the grout lines between the tiles should be minimal. When choosing your tile, focus on large rectangle or square options. If you have your heart set on glass tile, limit your use to the accent wall or border. Those days have passed and now contemporary means using oversized tile in neutral or natural tones. There was a time when contemporary tile meant glass tile. If you plan to do the entire wall, remember that you’ll need to drill through the tile to mount anything on it. This could mean the tile only comes up to the bottom of your vanity mirror, or perhaps it extends up halfway behind it. The tile needs to complement and not compete with the vanity mirror and lights you plan to use. When planning your backsplash tile, be sure to think about how you’re going to design the rest of the wall. So whatever you choose needs to hold up to scrutiny from close up. The tile design is crucial because people will focus on it the entire time they’re washing their hands. This is your chance to use a patterned tile, penny, mosaic, or natural stone. This will give you plenty of splash protection and look visually balanced. Plan to have your tile come up the wall at least a foot from the countertop. If you don’t plan to tile the entire wall, you can opt for a more decorative tile. This is why it’s one of the more popular accent wall choices. Using tile for your backsplash protects your bathroom wall while also giving you a chance to create a stunning visual effect. You can use a very small or large tile that’s completely out of scale with the rest of the bathroom, and it can look stunning.įor more accent wall ideas, click here. Scale won’t limit your design when it comes to accent walls, and that’s one of their greatest advantages. Maybe it’s handmade zellige tiles, scalloped, or hexagon shaped tile. Your other option is to pick a colorful and bold tile. This will add elegance and give your bathroom a modern feel. You could pick a more subtle design that’s a neutral color or made of a natural material. When choosing your accent tile, you have two options.

Travertine Mosaic Tile adds a rustic decorative element to your rooms. Travertine is a type of limestone that is formed by mineral deposits from natural springs. This sedimentary stone is created by a rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, known as calcite.
This Silver Travertine Mosaic we shown here is well-received and have wide applications in interior decoration. Rich brown, caramel, tan and white all present themselves in a classic pattern with the essence of movement. The hexagon pattern aims up the architecture appeal of your home and the coloration and striation pattern give it a contemporary tone.
With good installation effect and competitive price, this travertine mosaic tile owns great position and trend. Use with complementary field tiles for dramatic installations. Recommended for kitchens, backsplashes, showers, accent walls, tub surrounds and vanities.
We have various choices for Travertine mosaic tiles with different colors, patterns and surface treatments. Diverse finishing can achieve different decorative styles. The natural stone tile has a semigloss luster and pairs with the sharp, geometric design to enhance the look around a fireplace, or to give a den a more inviting atmosphere. Will you kindly consider?

A Modern 2-Bath Chicago Renovation, Aimed At Resale
A two-decade-old condo undergoes a resale-focused renovation in Bucktown, Chicago
“After” photos courtesy of Sweeten homeowner
Before: Making old bathrooms new again
For this Chicago homeowner, updating her bathrooms were important. Plus, time was of the essence: she was living in the 1,500-square-foot condo in Bucktown (located on the northwest side of the city) and wanted to sell. However, she knew that putting some money into refreshing the place with a renovation would increase the resale value. So, that’s exactly what she did!
“BEFORE” of master bathroom
“DURING” of master bath
She turned her attention to the master and hall bathrooms since they were the biggest concern. They felt outdated, with an early 2000s brown-hued vibe. (A well-designed, new bathroom is one of the top aspects that appeal to potential homebuyers.)
This was not the homeowner’s first time renovating and knew a good general contractor would make all the difference. She posted her project on Sweeten and found a general contractor in her area who was in sync with her goals.
Sweeten matches home renovation projects with vetted general contractors, offering advice, support, and up to $50,000 in renovation financial protection—for free.
After: A more modern aesthetic to appeal to buyers
Size-wise, the homeowner was in luck. The master bath had plenty of square footage and just needed some TLC to make it more attractive and functional. The hall bath would be a straightforward rip-and-replace, with no plumbing moving.
After consulting with her Sweeten general contractor, the homeowner focused on sourcing and buying materials and accessories. She wanted to redesign the bathroom with similar features that other new properties in her area were featuring.
“AFTER’ of the master shower
First things first: get rid of the old jet tub. Although seen as a luxury in the early 2000s, the jet tub now seemed outdated. Plus, it was awkwardly placed next to a shower stall. To help the flow and the look of the bath, a walk-in shower replaced this configuration. The trend of large-format tile perfectly suited the new oversized shower. Two niches inlaid with hexagonal tile brought a nice contrast to the stacked wall tiles. And, of course, a new master bath wouldn’t be complete without a long bench.
“AFTER” of the master bathroom
The vanity also got a much-needed refresh. Another double sink version replaced it, but one with a more modern aesthetic. She updated the hardware and matched the finishes to the overhead sconces. The contractor installed a quartz countertop along with a new backsplash. “It looks great,” says the homeowner. “Bigger, brighter, and more modern.”
“BEFORE” of hall bathroom
“AFTER” of hall bathroom
The hallway bathroom’s rip-and-replace received all-new fixtures and materials from tile, tub, and toilet to lighting and sink vanity.
All in all, the renovation took approximately five weeks, but then COVID hit Chicago, which curtailed the homeowners’ plan to sell. Luckily, the renovation still improved the resale value of her home. She’s also hopeful that once things settle down, buyers will consider the new baths a real selling point.
As for the overall renovation experience? “[My contractor] was super helpful and responsive,” she says. “He really went out of his way to help make the process easier and save us money, including picking up all the materials we purchased at Home Depot to avoid delivery fees.”
Tip from the Contractor: The general contractor recommends having all your materials either already selected or ordered so you don’t experience delays. Contractors work within a detailed timeframe. Make sure you have your materials on hand to help avoid delays and frustration for all involved.
Materials Guide:
Flooring and wall tile: Home Depot. Vanity: Studio 41. Paint: Sherwin-Williams. Countertop and backsplash: CM Stone Works Inc.
