Past Lives of Old Books And Other Essays, by R.B. Russell, Tartarus Press, 2020. Cover image by Joseph Simpson, info: tartaruspress.com.
R.B. Russell’s collected essays range from a discussion of authors from Arthur Machen to Donna Tartt, from Robert Aickman to Alain-Fournier, and from Denton Welch to Katherine Burdekin, taking in classic supernatural fiction, erotic decadence, biographical and dystopian fiction, though to poetry, bibliography and reference books. Russell also deals with books themselves—as physical objects to be collected and whose individual histories may be speculated upon. There are essays on book collecting, book-shops, bookdealers and bibliographers, through to the tiny booksellers’ labels that can often be found stuck in the front of older books. Past Lives of Old Books is an evocative exploration of books and book collecting, with occasional forays into authors and characters who may not exist, music and films.

location: ethel’s @christian-brotherton
Watching with interest as Christian locked up the florist for the day from across the street, Michael had trusted one of his own employees to lock up this evening in a bit to ambush Christian and lure him into an evening of just hanging out. “Hey!” he called, jogging across the road, waving. “Fancy seeing you here,” he teased.
Clapping his hand onto the other’s shoulder, he attempted to gauge the other’s mood before he proposed his idea for the evening. “I thought you might have had a bit of a day as well and might want a few drinks and excellent company?” he asked, his lips curved into a broad grin.

A synthesis of Edwardian and Persian inspired design interventions – IBLA has reworked a previously confused house into a rich and authentic whole for a young family in north London.
This Edwardian house had undergone various alterations during its life and had most recently been subdivided into 3 flats. In a series of high-impact moves, IBLA reconfigured and extended it to create a large family house and a separate self-contained flat on the top floor.
The new rear extension unites the previously separate living, kitchen and dining areas into large and open, yet clearly-defined spaces. A diamond-shaped lantern – inspired by traditional cupolas – crowns the dining space, giving a sense of height and grandeur, and bringing light deep into the plan. Three glazed sliding patio doors punctuate the rooms, and allow the family to flow out onto two connected terraces, conceived of as exterior rooms.
Vaults are carved out over the new minimal white kitchen which, along with the living space, offers illuminated oak shelves to display the client’s collection of Persian ornaments and artefacts.
Throughout the rest of the house, a series of bold new bathrooms and a luxurious master bedroom suite – with a generous dressing area and ensuite – sit alongside redecorated rooms with period features, to create a calm and beautiful combination of new and old.

Podcast #833: A World War II Story of Survival, Love, and Redemption
Amidst the epic clashes of armies and navies that make war such a fascinating subject, lie the smaller human interest stories that prove just as compelling. One such story is that of World War II soldier Joe Johnson Jr., which is told by Marcus Brotherton in a newly published book called A Bright and Blinding Sun: A World War II Story of Survival, Love, and Redemption. Today on the show, Marcus shares how Joe sought to escape the pressures of a broken family and the Great Depression by joining the US Army at age fourteen. We discuss how Joe ended up in the Philippines, fell in love with a teenage prostitute named Perpetua there, and helped smuggle her out of her brothel. We then get into how Joe was captured by the Japanese, and the harrowing experience he had to endure as a prisoner of war, including being locked in a box smaller than a coffin. We end our conversation with a discussion of Joe’s life after the war, and Marcus shares what happened to Perpetua, how Joe dealt with all the trauma he had experienced when he was really still just a kid, and what lessons Marcus has taken away from Joe’s life. Elthorne Village Hanwell, Ealing Housing
5 May 2021
Peterhead Court Ealing Residential Development
Design: Patel Taylor Architects
Location: Trumpers Way, Hanwell, Borough of Ealing, west London, England, UK
MHA instructs agents for the sale of Elthorne Village, Hanwell
London: 05 May 2021 – MHA London has today announced the appointment of Allsop and Colliers to market its mixed-use residential-led development, Elthorne Village. Located on Trumpers Way, Hanwell, in the bustling and increasingly popular borough of Ealing, Elthorne Village creatively combines attractive quality residential (Elthorne Place) and commercial use (Elthorne Works) on one site.
This exceptional co-location scheme has been sensitively designed by award-winning Patel Taylor Architects to reflect the site’s industrial heritage, whilst embracing the adjacent green space of the neighbouring park. Planning permission was secured by MHA London for the redevelopment of this long underutilised industrial site in July 2020.
Offering 149,812 sq ft of mixed private/affordable residential space, Elthorne Place will deliver 213 beautifully designed dwellings comprised of 75 one-bedroom, 115 two-bedroom and 15 three-bedroom apartments, along with an additional eight three-bedroom townhouses which will have access to both private and communal amenity space. Underground parking is also included at 0.5 spaces per residential unit.
Elthorne Works will provide 43,432 sq ft of extensive modern, light and flexible workspace, with the opportunity for an incoming purchaser to possibly benefit from the new Class E ‘Commercial Business and Service’ use class which covers a wide range of uses including: retail, financial and professional services, cafés and restaurants, offices, health centres, nurseries and recreation to name a few.
With a guide price of £22 million for the entire project, although the residential and commercial elements may be sold separately, the development offers a rare opportunity to acquire a development site of approximately 0.77 hectares with views over Brent River Park and Elthorne Park. The surrounding area comprises a mixture of residential houses and apartments, light industrial accommodation and community parkland while nearby Hanwell, West Ealing and Boston Manor provide an array of amenities including supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.
Hossein Abedinzadeh, Founder of MHA London commented on the sale: “This project offers a rare combination of a fantastic location opposite a park, off-street parking, as well as easy access to both Crossrail and the Piccadilly Line – a truly unique development.”
Andrew Boyd, partner at Allsop commented: “Elthorne Village provides an appealing investment opportunity in a well-established area of west London. With cutting-edge design, excellent transport links, including access to Crossrail services from Hanwell Station and a potential to create a variety of on-site facilities, it represents a compelling offering for investors and developers.”
Andrew White, Head of Residential at Colliers added: “Elthorne Village is located in an increasingly popular part of the capital, with good commuter links and amenities close by. These type of opportunities are rare at the moment and our client has secured a fantastic consent, designed by an award winning architect.”
