A Dive Down Lake Street: Summerfest June 30, 2019
Milwaukee, WI Lakefront- Summerfest has been rolling for a few days already, and tonight is going to be my first night at the world’s largest music festival. After a quick bite, my brother and I headed to the Miller Lite stage to see the 8:30pm act, Adia Victoria. She has a bluesy rock sound with a bit of drone feel. The sound of this band is reminiscent to the sound of Cowboy Junkies. She has a very good band that is augmented with a horn section. For the most part, the horn section isn’t there for soloing, but they do an incredible job of adding textures to the music that can become very dense. Even when the music is at its most dense, the vocals of Adia always came through. This was a very nice set and interesting band.
We left Adia Victoria right before she went on to the main attraction that I was there to see on the night, Lake Street Dive. They started at 9:30 and after a little bit of a slow start because of some slower mid-tempo songs that didn’t feel like they quite had settled in, the band picked up and put on a great show. The musicians in this band all stepped up as well, with excellent guitar and keyboardist and drummer. Each of them had moments within the night to stretch out and solo and they did so well and enhancing the music with their melodic solos. However, for my money, bassist Bridget Kearney is the standout for her playing acumen. I saw her sit in with Yonder Mountain String Band a couple years ago and was fantastic, and she was once again last night, whether she was taking a solo and stretching out a little or just emphasizing these little backing riffs she does which helps keeps the music pulsing forward. Their sound falls in the R&B area and throughout the night they had songs that echoed disco, 80s R&B, Southern Soul and much more that had the crowd up and dancing for most of the show. Rachel Price was in excellent voice, as they all were, which they showed by doing several songs around one big mic as they would have in the 1920s and ‘30s. I want to mention that one of the highlights was a song (sorry, not sure about the title) from their “Freak Yourself Out EP, which was distinctively heavier with some distortion coming through the instruments. They also had a great cover of Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’ during the set. Their final song of their encore was a great cover of Hall & Oates’ ‘Rich Girl’ they then mashed that up with their hit ‘Side Pony’. I’m not overly familiar with the studio version of ‘Side Pony’, but with this mash-up, they sat on it too long and never returned to ‘Rich Girl’. When it got to ‘Side Pony’ they didn’t get into any of the verses, but just continued to repeat the chorus (or so it sounded to me) for about 2 ½ or 3 minutes. It is a small knock at the end of a great show.
From there we walked one stage over to catch the last 15 minutes of the Brothers Osborne. I had recently just discovered this band wasn’t part of the pop country movement, but in the Outlaw Country movement. We walked in as the keyboardist and then the guitarist were launching into monster solos consecutively and the end of their last song, and the first part of the encore. What I heard leads me to want to see them very much. I was absolutely blown away by their virtuosity and diversity (even in the short stint that I saw them).
It was a great first night for me at Summerfest, and I’m looking forward to more over this last week.

REVIEW: “Stoned Cold Country”
REVIEW: “Stoned Cold Country” @rollingstones @americanaandy #americanahighways @marenmorris @realmarcusking @brothersosborne @warandtreaty @AshleyMcBryde #listenbetter #stonedcoldcountry
Various Artists — Stoned Cold Country London and Nashville are about as far apart musically as they are on a map, but The Rolling Stones managed to bridge their gap with much of the early 70s work. Moving naturally from blues-based rock to country, Mick, Keith and company strove to push past the pop status of their British brethren and embrace more primal sounds (the simultaneous rise of outlaw…
