The Wolf can what now?
This snippet but from the boys side of things.
The Wolf was growing tired, Link could see. Though he suspected part of it was carrying both him and Scars for hours with no water or breaks. Link licked his cracked lips and winced at the pain. He hopped off the Wolf and was concerned with how long it took his friend to stop and lift his head quizzically at Link. “I’m thirsty, and I bet Scars could use water too.” The Mother cucoo immediately put his nose to the ground and went searching. Link had learned the fastest way to get him to agree to anything was to make it about him or Scars with how much of a bleeding heart the Wolf was. Shortly after that they were having their fill by a river while Link dripped water into Scars mouth from a clean cloth. He felt a little better that Scars was reacting to the water at least. After he filled the (smelling horribly of banana) water skin stolen during the current escape he maneuvered scars body and himself back on top of the Wolf and they were off again, towards the setting sun and a rumor of a town called Kakariko. 43 and half minutes later the sun had set and they could see a herd of horses in the distance. Link felt his heart clench at the sight of a chestnut mare, hoping that Epona was doing fine wherever she was. Apparently the wolf underneath him had a similar idea, for he stopped gently lowered the Hylians to the ground and with what Link could only describe as a Wolfish grin, began to howl. At first he was confused but then he realized just what order the howled notes were in. It was Epona’s song!  Link felt his jaw drop, how in the world had his friend learned that song? His fingers itched to join on his ocarina but it was still somewhere in the Yiga base, probably getting filled with rotten banana juice or some other crime against foods worth eating. The mare nearest to them stopped grazing and instead trotted in their direction. As she got nearer Link felt his throat tighten in painful familiarity. The horse was a beautiful silver bay, less red than the Epona he had come to know yet still eerily similar enough to make his eyes burn with unshed tears. The horse spooked a little once she caught sight of the wolf howling the melody, But he continued the song and Link watched on fascination as eventually the horse crept closer to the predator, clearly following the song. Eventually the horse was nearly leaning on the wolf in clear contentment, so Wolf stopped howling, and instead faced the horse with a wagging tail and some near excited yips? Link watched as it seemed the horse and his wolf friend had a conversation? He was pulled from his thoughts when Wolf boofed in his direction, waiting for Link to walk over before nudging Scars with his snout and then pointing to the mare’s back. Link felt himself light up at the message! He got scars balanced on the mare well enough, but encountered a problem when it came to getting on her himself. She was a full grown mare and he was nowhere near as tall as the adult version of himself yet. After a couple failed attempts, Wolf came over and used himself as a step stool for Link, somehow looking faintly amused as he did so. (He had no idea Wolves could look so smug) With the group resituated, they moved in the direction with Wolf in the lead, Link trusting that he had some idea where they were going, though now that he had seen Wolf talk to the mare he started to suspect that the times Wolf would disappear from camp were more than a chance to stretch his legs.
@skyloftian-nutcase @smilesrobotlover finally some fluff for the boys!!

@nancyheart, have Dad Squad minus the Dads! <3
Trees passed rapidly as the wolf tore through the forest. Link held tightly to his fur, crouched low against his body and glaring fiercely ahead. They were hunting, and he wanted to make sure they caught up to their prey quickly.
Those Yiga jerks weren't going to keep their filthy hands on Scars if he could help it.
He felt so stupid how it had happened. He'd found a river and wanted to go swimming and have fun. He'd noticed fairies and wanted to follow them, and Wolf had to track him, leaving Scars at their camp.
Which meant the Yiga could sneak in and kidnap him. It wasn't like Scars could defend himself, after all.
So now here they were, tracking the Yiga's smelly banana scent and racing to catch up. Wolf snarled, and Link grabbed his sword to get ready.
He didn't really have much fighting to do. Wolf was ferocious, claws and teeth shredding skin and bone. Link swung once or twice, knocked a Yiga down with his slingshot for Wolf to finish off, but their little band of bad guys quickly fell to the ground or fled.
Scars was in the middle, curled in on himself. Link gasped, jumping off Wolf as his furry friend patrolled quickly before also joining them.
"Do you think they hurt him?" he asked as he looked his friend over. Scars had only just started waking recently, not really aware of anything, but at least able to drink. It seemed taking him to different fairy fountains was helping a little, at least.
Wolf sniffed Scars, licking hesitantly at his forehead. Scars flinched at the touch, snorting a little in response, making Link giggle.
"Hey, look! More bananas!" Link pointed out, noticing a cache of the fruit. He was honestly starting to grow a little tired of it, but sometimes he cut it into fun shapes. Wolf didn't seem to like it all that much, but Link figured that was because wolves ate meat. He'd never seen a wolf eat a banana, after all.
Maybe he could get Scars to eat one?
Grabbing the bananas, he stuffed them in his pouch. He still hadn't gotten all of his supplies, even after burning down the Yiga dungeon. They'd taken it and spread it around. He really hoped they weren't using his ocarina or his masks. Especially the Fierce Deity.
He... he was scared of what might happen if they use the deity mask. It would be Termina all over again. But he felt like that would be obvious, and the world wasn't ending or anything, so that was a good start. He'd dealt with worse than this. It would be fine.
Wolf licked him unexpectedly, drawing a giggle out of him. Wolf was silly sometimes. He wagged his tail, nuzzling Scars, who scrunched his face, noticing Wolf's wet nose tickling him. Link giggled at that too.
"Come on," he prompted, pushing Scars a little. Wolf laid on the ground so he could try to ease the teenager on to his friend's back. Then they rode off towards the edge of the woods. "The fairies earlier told me there was another great fairy nearby!"
They'd fix Scars up, and Link would get his gear back and find the final boss for these Yiga jerks, and that would be that. Wolf would leave him, just as everyone else did.
But he'd at least have fun in the meantime, he guessed.

love how both tywin and ned are genre definingly different from the predecessors from their houses. lannisters have always been the clever house, from lann the clever swindling casterly rock to tyland lannister splitting kings landing's treasury. but tywin's 'low cunning' and use of brutal crushing military force to solve his problems which he employs in the reyne-tarbeck rebellion and the scouring of the riverlands and the red wedding is different from the historical version of house lannister. it's a new brand of lannisterism, tywin's version, and it is this version of lannister legacy that he passes on to his children.
ned on the other hand very much likes to distance himself from the stark features of the wild and the wolf's blood, which other starks like brandon and rickard and cregan and even lyanna are defined by, adopting instead an ethos of duty and honor more like the tully words or his foster father jon arryn. he does this because he thinks that it is this wolf's blood that killed them in the end. just like the lannister kids contend with their father's idea of a good lannister, the starklings contend with their father's idea of a good stark.

Oh, not at all. I generalized those two because I've seen excellent breakdowns already done by others and they weren't all that salient. You've been in fndm long enough I figured you'd seen them, but maybe those metas are older than I recall.
I consider the wizard of oz allusions to be tertiary amongst the rwby team and representing the failedcycle ozpin perpetuates. It's very likely that the current headmasters, who hold the primary allusions, along with some secondary professors, were strq's predecessors. Port, for instance, is peter (and the wolf) but he's designed to look like tik tok. Princess ozma and the wizard of oz are currently the same character, and this forced merger keeps repeating.
They were ozpin's first set of trusted subordinates, strq the next and overlapping ones, and rwby flagged as the next lot in that cycle So we can't get a perfect match with team rwby; they're deviating from the intended molds and that's a good thing! Each will shake off their role in oz's quest because it's wrong.
As a side note, I find the tertiary allusions delightful in how they're triggered by character relationships. Ruby is the story of little red riding hood, so she is the granddaughter, the huntsman, the wolf and it's victim. In conjunction with ozpin or his schemes, she becomes dorothy gale, transported by tornado (a sudden catastrophe) straight into a quest she willingly undertakes, hence how her semblance works. A small tornado that vaporizes everyone and moves airborne. But she won't kill the witch in the wizard's behalf.
In conjunction with penny, she becomes wendy darling (and penny becomes peter), and they fight a man with a hook (who was once a lost boy) and his small, temperamental assistant (who tries to murder wendy for stealing away her peter). In conjunction with yang, she becomes alice liddel's older sister (the focused goal oriented one who enjoys Alice's stories). In conjunction with weiss, they become the sisters snow white and rose red, etc.
Weiss was initially on the path to becoming like her sister, just as winter was becoming like ironwood, the primary tin man. Fortunately, she joined rby and shook off that role very quickly. On a symbolic level, the full separation from the tin man occurs when she is able to summon him. Which happens after she is free with her emotions. Winter fights him more directly.
Then there's yang lol. Her trailer warns us not to judge by appearances, while red like roses implies that she is playing the part of beauty (in conjunction with blake the beast). We think oh she's goldilocks because of her golden mane and fights a few symbolic bears, but that girl was the antagonist and villain of her story. And the very first hint that we were looking at her secondary allusion, that runs out early in v1, was her motive for being in the club. She was chasing an elusive, white faced, pink eyed target. Her primary allusion kicks in the tail end of v2! Alice did travel backward, after all. (Tai gives garbage advice because the blue caterpillar telling alice to go around one side or another was also garbage, incidentally).
Oh, hah! Another parallel for qrow and blake: he's the aragorn who remained strider because the questing party never formed, (because frodo only took one ally to mordor). Meanwhile, blake transitioned to prince aragorn (the beasts transformation) and reforged the splintered white fang to return to battle. (And ruby becomes frodo when this allusion is active).
So by this point, I think many of us are likely familiar with the idea that the breakup of Team RWBY at the end of Volume 3 is meant to thematically parallel the breakup of Team STRQ in the wake of Summer’s death, ie; Ruby falls into a coma for a few days while Summer disappears and then both their teams fracture. Along with a popular sub-theory that Blake leaving Yang after the Fall is meant to parallel Raven leaving Tai.
But the thing is, if Ruby falling into a coma at the end of Volume 3 is meant to parallel Summer’s (supposed) death and the way this loss caused the fracturing and breakup of their respective teams, then Raven’s actions DON’T really parallel Blake nearly as well as a lot of people think.
Tumblr media
And in fact, I feel like Qrow could potentially have paralleled Blake’s actions FAR better.
Like people talk about how Raven ‘abandoned’ Tai just like Blake ran away from Yang after the Fall of Beacon. Except if the point of parallel to the Fall of Beacon is Summer’s death, then the parallel doesn’t work because Raven was ALREADY GONE from Team STRQ by the time Summer disappeared. To the point where Tai, Qrow and Ozpin had (and still have) NO IDEA she was even involved in whatever happened to Summer. Raven can’t exactly have abandoned Tai just like Blake did to Yang if Raven wasn’t even around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead, as I’ve discussed in the past, I think Raven’s actions following Summer’s ‘death’ potentially line up far better with WEISS. Like if it turns out that losing Summer was what actually drove Raven to return to her tribe, then that lines up very nicely with Weiss being taken back to her family/Atlas in the wake of the Fall of Beacon: Both return to the shitty, abusive family that raised them. And given how much of Weiss’s character is tied up in her family and their ‘legacy’, then the way Raven eventually took over her tribe makes her an ideal foil; effectively representing a Weiss who did eventually take over the Schnee family and company, but in the process internalized all the pain and trauma her family gave her.
And as for a cherry on top; if Ruby falling into a coma after the Fall of Beacon is meant to parallel Summer’s supposed ‘death’, then what was one of the last things Ruby did at the Fall?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Run off on a special mission with Weiss, just like we now know Summer did with Raven.
Now going back to my point about how Raven was not even around to abandon Tai just like Blake did to Yang, you know who WAS presumably around when Summer ‘died’?
Yeah; Qrow.
Let’s consider what exactly Blake actually did following the Fall of Beacon beyond just a surface-level reading: Yes, she did go back to her family, similar to what Raven may have done, but given that the Belladonnas are NOT actually shitty and abusive, I maintain that Weiss is still the better parallel to Raven. Instead, let’s consider Blake’s whole arc across Volumes 4 and 5 relating to the White Fang: At first being depressed over loss and perceived failure before being inspired to start working for a better cause, in this case pushing back against and stopping Adam’s takeover of the White Fang.
So I have to wonder; what if this reflects what Qrow did with Ozpin and the conspiracy following Summer’s ‘death’? Maybe Qrow and his teammates had helped Ozpin in the past and knew what he was doing, but what if THIS was the point where Qrow became fully committed to Ozpin’s cause and joined the Ozluminati full-time? Perhaps seeing it as a way of ‘honoring’ Summer’s memory.
Instead of staying with the one teammate he had left (and possible partner) who was now in a massive depressive spiral AND had two kids to take care of.
Tumblr media
It starts to make Qrow and Tai feel a lot like Blake and Yang, doesn’t it?
This is one of the big reasons why I think Qrow and Tai are the REAL foil to Bumbleby on Team STRQ. They effectively give us a look at a version of Blake and Yang whose relationship failed. Or rather, were never able to ‘take the next step’ and actually form their relationship.
Qrow is a Blake who fully internalized her self-loathing and belief that she didn’t deserve Yang or that Yang was better off without her and has simply been pining for Yang from afar.
Meanwhile Tai is a Yang who likewise fully internalized her fears of abandonment and fully resents Blake for leaving her or may not have ever even fully recognized her feelings for Blake in the first place.
Essentially, Qrow and Tai are the version of Blake and Yang who weren’t able to work through all the problems, issues and baggage which allowed them to actually start their relationship. Like a Blake who didn’t get that vital pep-talk from Sun at the end of Volume 4, or a Yang who likewise didn’t get that vital talk from Weiss in Volume 5.
Which in turn leads us to what I brought up earlier with Qrow joining up with the Ozluminati full-time, essentially representing a Blake who threw herself into reforming the White Fang instead of returning to Team RWBY and reconnecting with Yang. Meanwhile Tai simply throws himself into a deep depression, grief and ‘moping’, ironically all the things he would later accuse Yang of doing (at some point I’m going to do a post on just how much PROJECTING Tai has likely been doing…)
So now Qrow and Tai have this low-key toxic relationship where Qrow is more-or-less aware of Tai’s extremely dysfunctional parenting but has also been enabling it and a lot of Tai’s unhealthy coping mechanisms over the years because he’s been pining for Tai ever since their Beacon days and still is pining in a very depressed, self-loathing ‘I don’t deserve him/to be happy’ way and also doesn’t want to risk conflict with his former partner and also the only teammate he has left.
Thus Qrow keeps his distance and just goes along with Tai’s dysfunctions and/or lets Tai push him away. Which in turn just reinforces Tai’s abandonment issues.
And Ruby and Yang are still stuck with utterly dysfunctional parental figures.
Oh, and if you need more proof about the deliberate parallels between Blake and Qrow…
youtube
Then how about the whole damn song where they sing about how they’ve always felt terrible about themselves but now things are looking up for them.

Looks like the Wolf's out of the jailcell (Dad Squad)
Rusl was sitting by the fire listening to Uli sing softly somewhere behind him as he ran his hand through his son’s fur. The fact that it was so soft still surprised Rusl everytime he had the privilege to feel it. He looked over and saw Link with half lidded eyes, tail slowly moving back and forth in contentment, and Rusl’s heart felt full looking at his son, content in his more furry form.
Hana woke and cried behind him so he turned to see Colin holding his sister and staring at Rusl, eyes that were usually full of emotion seemingly blank.
“Something wrong with Hana?”
“Why’s your hand red?” This was accompanied by a head tilt that cracked loudly in the suddenly silent house.
Rusl jerked around to look at the hand that had been going through Link’s Fur, only to see it coming back stained a sticky red. He looked down at where the blood had come from only to see Link on his side Blood gushing from a laceration, ears peeled back and eyes blown wide in fear.
Rusl dropped his sword (when did he grab it) and knelt in the sacred springs water, bile burning his throat as he gazed at what he’d done. The moon shone a full sickly red making the spring look like Rusl was in a pool of blood.
Link’s now Hylian face was almost submerged in the water as he cried, crawling as best he could to get away from Rusl, fear clear on his face. Rusl tried to reach out, but saw his sword flash in the moonlight (hadn’t he dropped it?) and Link’s shaking arms gave out on him, dropping him face first into the glistening red beneath him. Rusl moved to grab his boy, but as he went to touch the pale skin it turned to smoke, dissipating the way monsters would once they were vanquished.
Rusl shot up with a gasp, his heart racing. He looked around the clearing and started to get up so he could check on Link, before a hand the size of his torso applied an ever so gentle pressure keeping him from getting to his feet.
Rusl gazed upon the poised face of the Fierce Deity, and felt reality clicking back into place with each passing moment. He settled against the bedroll he’d been placed in with no further argument and saw the deity shift uncomfortably, clearly wanting to ask about what had happened in the cave, but unsure of his approach.
Abel interrupted the fidgeting with a water skin being shoved in Rusl’s face, while he refused to look him in the eye. Rusl felt hot shame creep up his back, he had no right to fall apart during a battle, even if the Fierce Deity needed little help with most battles. He had let the Yiga get away, all because he reacted so strongly to a twisted piece of metal.
Some blacksmith he was.
Abel came back with a roasted skewer of fowl and wild greens, and Rusl ate more to delay the inevitable conversation than out of any desire for food.
Eventually though, he had finished and Abel finally looked him in the eye, the glimmer of sympathy quickly drowned out by a cold displeasure, his face turning to stone before Rusl’s eyes. “Rusl, this can’t keep happening.”
Rusl looked down, shame hot in his throat, choking any words he might have been able to say in his defense.
“I don't know what has been done to you in the past, but if you keep freezing up in battle it could get us killed.” Abel’s face looked as though he had bit into a lemon with his next words. “I know I haven't been very … open about my situation, but I almost lost my son to the Calamity and I refuse to let the Yiga kill him because you’re getting distracted. I can’t—won’t fail him like that again. I know that the lack of news about your son is hard, but—“
“They want to put a muzzle on my boy!” it gushed out of Rusl like blood from an open wound, hot fast despite the attempts to keep it all inside.
Instead of the shock or disgust Rusl was worried he would see after that exclamation, Abel’s face shifts from bafflement to outrage. “What do you mean?”
“What other news is there of your child, little Farmer?”
Fierce’s question made both of them pause, and Rusl felt heat rise to his face because this was a terrible way to tell them about his son’s gift but he’s already brought it up, and Abel was right about the secret hiding crippling their effectiveness. (the knowledge that Link almost died because Rusl hadn’t been trustworthy burned)
“My son is the one they are talking about when they complain about a Wolf.”
Rusl closed his eyes despite knowing it would do nothing to stop reactions from the others and heard concerning choking noises from the direction of Abel.
"Oh. Is he cursed then?" Rusl's eyes opened to the sight of the Fierce Deity kneeling close to him. "If they are able to reacquire Link's gear he has a way to reverse such a fate."
Rusl felt his jaw drop at the implication that Fierce's son had been in a similar position.
"Your son is… a wolf??" Abel questioned.
"Only sometimes." Rusl is considering putting his headband in his mouth at this point.
"And you didn't tell us about this sooner?"
"How exactly do I bring up that Link is a wolf sometimes, without sounding like my head is full of cuccoo feathers?"
Abel's mouth opens and closes several times before he thinks better of it and just shakes his head.
Rusl begins to feel tension he hadn't even been aware of holding drop from his shoulders. Neither of the other Father's were truly angry, and in fact seemed more determined than ever to help make sure that all their sons were returned safely where they belonged.

@skyloftian-nutcase @smilesrobotlover @silvercaptain24 @telemna-hyelle Here it is! I was super excited to write this, and it only took writing a lot of Rusl angst to get there

they approached the suspiciously lush area with caution. The Yiga had started to catch on that the boys were travelling to places rumored to have healing and the spring they stopped at a week prior had run red with conflict.
Link, or Wolfie as he kept being called glanced over to see the child walking beside him with a sword out, just in case. The weight on his back reassured him that 'scars' was still there, though his breathing was still softer than the breeze flowing through his fur.
Before they could get much closer to the ring of mushrooms they were swarmed with gleeful bright lights, chiming and dancing around them, particularly around fairy boy, as he'd started calling the other link in his head.
Seeing fairy boy smile, softly with his bright blue eyes sparkling in the fairies glow, made the stone of worry that constantly sat heavy in his stomach lift just the tinniest amount and once more Wolfie hoped that he would get the chance to give fairy boy a place in Ordon, if he wanted it. No one deserves to feel like they belonged nowhere, as it had become clear fairy boy felt in the short time he'd known him. And if his family could accept that he was a wolf sometimes? Wolfie figured they could make anyone feel at home.
(not sure where this came from but here! Furry musings as the lost bois continue the quest to help scars (。•̀ᴗ-)✧)
