VOYAGE OF THE GALACTIC SPACE DANGLER

The beautiful bizarre is how I can best describe this. This short is certainly strange and weird but it’s also compelling, unique, and overflowing with creativity. This would make Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry proud as their influence and style is all over the piece. Special shoutout to filmmaker Evan Mann and his cinematographer Brook Aitken on capturing stunning visuals, with rich colors that jump off the screen. You won’t regret traveling with this space dangler.

Listed: Jeffrey Alexander

Jeffrey Alexander is a fixture in a free-wheeling, Grateful Dead-loving, guitar jam underground, a founder of the Iditarod and Black Forest/Black Sea and a sometime member of Jackie O Motherfucker. His Direwolves splice acid folk with a buzzing, humming motoric-ness that edges near Stereolab, but his latest band, the Heavy Lidders, is pure transcendental pleasure. In her review, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “These songs take their time to loosen and relax, pursuing repetitive vamps until the edges melt away and the hard colors swirl into pastels.” Alexander is also a DJ and here he lists some of the music he spins for listeners.

For this Listed, I decided to run down some of the bootlegs and quirky things that I often play on my radio show — hope you dig it. I started doing radio back in college in the 1980s, where I was also the record librarian. The archives at the station opened me up to a myriad of sounds and new zones. Radio for me is like a new mixtape — not knowing what is going to come next… or waiting for the next mic break to try and find out the name of that killer song they played 15 minutes ago. The mystery of it all is still exciting, like remnants of pre-internet music fandom when we searched through record stores, made lists from music magazines and traded tapes. I had a spell as a commercial FM DJ on WRNR in Maryland in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until moving to San Francisco that I started my own program called Pome Pome Tones. Fairport Convention — Reno Nevada — April 27, 1968

Recorded live on the French TV program Bouton Rouge. Brooke Sietinsons of The Espers turned me on this this when we were VHS tape trading in 2000 and I’ve been retreating to it every so often for 20 years. This is Fairport at their most delightfully blinding San Francisco ballroom jamming free flight. It’s just so fucking good. I love the crisp dual vocals of Judy Dyble and Ian Matthews, I especially love that they both sit down and look so bored during the guitar jam out. Especially Judy, just like a Donna Jean icy stare. But the jam out is super nice too — modal jazzy freak-outs, some of Richard Thompson’s best ever captured on video. This takes the most boring song from my favorite Richard and Mimi Farina album to incredible new zones. I also tend to play a lot of Ian Matthews’ early 1970s records on my radio show, as well. Such a pure voice and perfect ringwear rock vibes.

The Smiths — How Soon Is Now? (Chopped + Screwed)

The chopped + screwed style coming out of Houston, TX in the late 1990s/early 2000s is so fascinating. Full-on Robitussin-fueled shamanism, it’s like the modern-day version of dub. There are so many examples of this across the spectrum, but this 10-minute chopped version of The Smiths takes the cake — probably because 16-year-old me in 1984 sat on the floor listening to the original version of this over and over again, studying the gatefold. But this version is so much better. Thank you Scobed + Robed.

I’m Still In Love With You (Alton Ellis, Sean Paul)

Althea + Donna’s Uptown Top Ranking is one of my all-time favorite songs, and one of John Peel’s as well. A well-worn Jamaican riddim starting with Alton Ellis in 1967 and made famous again by Marcia Aitken in 1977. DJ Algoriddim has expertly mixed together a boat load of these variations here and it’s a killer 30-minute jam.

Jon Rose – Paganini’s Last Testimony

When things get autumnal each year, I gear up for a spooky edition of my radio show. One of my favorites featured this Jon Rose piece which he originally broadcast on ABC, Australia in 1988. It’s an amazing sinister collage of bible-belt radio bits, demonic violin, and Rose reciting devilish text from Paganini’s own letters. The CD is long out of print but you can hear the entire 57 minutes of this glorious creation on an old episode of Pome Pome Tones here.

I’ve been super fortunate to experience the live Arkestra a handful of times, and this set from 2013 simply floored me. They completely consumed that old ratty theater space with their magical floating power.

Chuck Brown and The Junkyard Band — at Wilmer’s Park, Brandywine Maryland — Sep 19, 1989

I grew up in Baltimore and spent a lot of time going to punk and hippie shows in DC (old 9:30, DC space) in the 1980s, but Wilmer’s Park in southern MD was totally the place. All-day and night go-go shows, mini festivals with overnight camping, shows from Hot Tuna, Zero, Allmans, Root Boy Slim (!!!) and some of the best BBQ I’ve eaten, oh man. There was a lot of crossover of punk/funk/crunchy scenes back then, I loved it all. I went to a lot of Trouble Funk gigs, but this was the only time I witnessed the legendary Chuck Brown.

Bardo Pond — What Are Their Names?

Probably the greatest band of the last 30 years covering one of my absolute favorite David Crosby songs, what could be better? I curated this Terrastock festival in Providence RI in 2006 and assembled a CD compilation of some of the performers for a micro release on the label I used operate called Secret Eye. The original features Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Phil Lesh (what an amazing LP!) and this Bardo version somehow channels that essence in a slow fried perfect hash jar tempo.

My alternative 91st Academy Awards

As always during 31 Days of Oscar, I partake in an annual fantasy. What would the Oscars look like if I stuffed the ballots - choosing every single nomination and choosing every single winner? It always would look a lot different. Fans of Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice? Come at me.

Wholesale changes in this category compared to real life. The best three films of 2018, to me, were Burning, Roma, and Shoplifters -- none of these were in the English language. Films I tossed for Best Picture were Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, and Vice. I don’t think any of those four films have any business being in this category. In their place are the likes of Eighth Grade, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and one of the most technically marvelous action films in decades in Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. Yes, an M:I film (superb editing, setpieces, and audacious style that finally wakes the franchise up).

But I’m going for an unexciting pick according to some with Roma. To use an oxymoron, it is an intimate epic -- one crafted beautifully, daring to comment on relations between ethnicities and the sexes at a certain time in Mexico.

And I believe that, in my alternate Oscar universe (yes, I’ve drawn up and thought about it for many ceremonies past... I’ll reveal those some day), Aparicio would be the first indigenous woman to be awarded an acting Oscar.

Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Ali is good, don’t get me wrong. But, compared to the movie Moonlight and his performance in it, it looks like he is about to get a second Oscar for a far worse movie and a lesser role. Ali is fourth or fifth in this lineup for me. Grant is fantastic in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Best Supporting Actress

Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

Emma Stone, The Favourite

Marina de Tavira, Roma

Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians

This comes down to the fact I couldn’t separate Stone and Weisz’s performances in their saucy movie. Nor could I find the argument to give de Tavira or Yeoh the Oscar. This is a bit of a default choice, I hate to say.

Not even a contest if you asked me. This category is something else if I consider The Favourite and Roma bringing up the rear. But Koreeda’s drama about a found family that does what they can to survive is the culmination of what he has done in his career thus far. This is his Oscar.

Longtime followers know that I have unorthodox opinions about animated features. The only Animated Feature Oscar I’ve handed to Pixar/Walt Disney Animation Studios since beginning this tradition in 2013 was for Inside Out. I thought Ralph Breaks the Internet was a painful addition to the Disney animated canon, so it is not here. Nor is Wes Anderson’s culturally insensitive Isle of Dogs or Mamoru Hosoda’s sloppy Mirai. At the end of the day? No boat-rocking this time, except in some of the other nominees.

Hometown? 

Brooklin, Maine, which is a remote coastal village of about 800 people.

Where are you know? 

I’m in Cambridge, Massachusetts, about to start rehearsals for the project I’m directing at ART (American Repertory Theater).

What is your current project? 

Proclamation is an annual devised production created with a group of young people from diverse backgrounds within the Boston area. Every iteration has a different theme; this year’s is unity. The goal is to create a professional piece of theater with teenagers (every ensemble member is paid for their work) that is authentic to their experience and perspective. It’s not quite participatory theater, not quite a student production—the closest kin I can think of is Ontroerend Goed’s Once and For All We’re Gonna Tell You Who We Are So Shut Up and Listen. This is my second Proclamation and it’s a completely thrilling and humbling thing to direct.

Why and how did you get into theatre? 

I think I fell into it when I auditioned for a school play when I was about 17. I’d had no formal exposure to theater and I was miserably self-conscious and very, terribly nervous. The director had us play simple theater games during the audition, which did not at all fit my idea of what an audition should be (I think I thought I would have to sing a song in front of a lot of people, even though the show was not a musical, and if I did well, I would get to do it again in the school gymnasium wearing a lot of makeup).

In the middle of that game, I caught a tiny glimpse of something—an ability to willfully change my current emotional reality for another one, which in turn would change the realities of the people around me. At that age, I felt relentlessly anxious, ashamed, and angry—deeply ugly and unlovable—but for a few seconds at a time, I could choose to feel otherwise and do otherwise, and then the other people in the room would laugh or gasp or feel something that they also hadn’t felt before. I didn’t take an actual theater class until I was in college, but I never let go of that first nascent sense that it was possible to suspend and alter a collective state.

What is your directing dream project? 

Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba.

What kind of theater excites you? 

Work that is uncynical and highly intentional with its audience. I like it when audiences have skin in the game—either because they feel the play is directly about them or because it has major cultural significance for them. I also love good actors, so I’m drawn to work that is actor-centered and has detailed, athletic performances.

What do you want to change about theater today? 

I want to see more types of humans everywhere, but especially in casting and administration. I want to see us getting access to consistent healthcare. I want to see regional theater communities flourish so that audiences can see seasons that are curated to inspire and respond to them (not just rehashes of recent New York titles), and so that artists can have creative homes to grow and work in. I want us to face the fact that authentic inclusion takes time and effort. I also know a company that brings a shelter dog onstage for every curtain speech and tries to find it a home; I think there should be more of that.

What is your opinion on getting a directing MFA? 

I don’t have a strong opinion about this, possibly because I don’t have an MFA. I don’t have a rice cooker, either, but my cousin has one that she really likes and uses all the time. So I may get a rice cooker at some point.

Who are your theatrical heroes? 

There are so many artists who have been heroes to me: Timothy Douglas, Bill Fennelly, Anne Bogart, Maria Aitken, Blake Robison, Tracy Brigden, Paul Mullins, Beatrice Basso, Ray Anthony Thomas, Davis Robinson, Hal Brooks, René Augesen, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Anita Stewart are a few of them.

Any advice for directors just starting out? 

Notice your destructive thought patterns and try to break them. Write thank you notes. Always carry at least two pens. Alchemize anger into love and never, ever pick on people who have less power than you, even if someone once did so to you.
