I think usually, Spot's glad to hear people are scared of him. But when it comes to Manhattan newsies, I think he'd be a little disappointed.

The Brooklyn newsies explicitly refer to Manhattan as "[our] buddies". Sure, Spot wants proof they're serious about the strike, but as soon as they do that he heads right over to help out.

He's got a reputation to uphold, he still needs to be seen as Brooklyn's fierce leader. But he's Brooklyn's fierce leader who'll look out for anyone who needs protecting. He'd want Manhattaners to know they're safe in Brooklyn if they need help.

Part One

Summery: Race and Spot meet for the first time in the refuge

Race had been in the refuge for a month now, but that never made it easier. He woke up in the morning with his back full of knots and his neck feeling twisted. He watched, disinterested, as a rat scurried along the floor in front of his bunk.

His bunk mate was still asleep next to him. He knew they'd get in trouble if they were asleep when Snyder came in to get them, so he quickly shook them awake. They thanked him silently and began to get dressed for the day.

As he walked to the breakfast table, he could hear broken strings of gossip.

"New boy's pretty beat up"

"Seems pretty"

"Says his name is Conlon"

"Kind of a pretty boy"

"Don't mess with him"

"Brokklyn's second"

Race was intrigued by the gossip. He was only thirteen, but he had already picked up on his interest in boys, and everyone seemed to say that the new boy wasn't too bad to look at.

"Brooklyn's second," the phrase rang through his head. He had heard all about Brooklyn, Brooklyn was a joke. Sure, the boys from Brooklyn were bigger than most of the newsies, but they were all unorganized and were too busy fighting each other to fight anyone else. Conlon, as Race had heard him called, was probably just as pathetic as the rest of Brooklyn.

Race sat down at the table as a small, lanky boy rushed in. His eyes were erratic, and he clearly didn't wanna be late to breakfast. "Smart kid," Race thought.

Although he was trying to act as uninterested as possible, Race couldn't help but stare at the boy. They were definitely right when they said pretty.

He was short, slightly shorter than Race, who was already short for his age. He had short, dirty blonde hair and the most beautiful blue eyes. Those eyes, however, were marked by a blue and purple bruise over the right one. Someone had gotten a pretty good hit on him. Snyder, Race figured.

The new boy looked around frantically for a seat, clearly nervous about being in the refuge. Must be his first time. He seemed to spy the empty seat next to Race and walked briskly over to it. He quickly took his seat and began bouncing his leg immediately. Definitely nervous.

"Yous the new kid, right?" Race asked quietly. The boys head shot up quickly, seemingly alarmed that someone was speaking to him.

"Y-yeah," the kid sputtered out. Race smiled.

"You got a name?" He asked.

"Yeah, name's Spot," Spot replied, voice uneven.

"Well, nice to meet you, Spotty, name's Race," Race smiled. Spot seemed amused at the nickname.

A door opened across the room, and everyone tensed. Spot looked worried. Race placed his hand gently on the boys arm under the table. Spot flinched away from the touch, but then his shoulders relaxed, and he accepted Race's comfort.

The kids all worked their butts off to please Snyder and do everything he wanted. Race was working all day, but he managed to slip in a slight break every hour to check on Spot.

By the end of the day, with Race's help, Spot seemed to relax a bit.

A few days went by, and Race and Spot seemed to get closer. One day, about three weeks later, they talked about Brooklyn.

"I's gonna be king one day Racer, you can bet on it" Spot said proudly. Race chuckled a bit.

"That so?" He asked.

"Yeah, as soon as Randy moves on, I's gonna take over, and Brooklyn will be different, I swear it"

"Different how?" Race asked.

"We's gonna be big, Race. People everywhere are gonna know who we are, no one will make funna Brooklyn no more" Race hummed, encouraging Spot to keep going.

"Everyone will have enough to eat, we's all gonna share. Nobody goes to sleep hungry. And we's gonna care for each other, no more fighting"

"That sounds beautiful, Spotty." Race said. A slight blush began to creep up Spot's neck.

"Thanks, Racer. " he smiled.

"So, you get out today?" Race asked.

"Guess I do." Spot sighed. He didn't wanna leave Race.

"I'll miss you Spotty" Race smiled.

"No, you won't," Spot replied. Race looked at him puzzled.

"I said I's gonna he the king of Brooklyn one day, and I meant it, when you get out, meet me in Brooklyn as soon as you can" Spot said. Race smiled.

"See you there, Spotty."
