July 15th, 1996
Heat. The boiling heat of the Arizona sun was practically broiling you alive as you trekked along. Thumb pointing out with every car that passed by to no avail whatsoever. With each car passing you that caused a groan as you tilted your head back. Eventually you just couldn’t carry yourself anymore. You set your bag down sitting yourself on top of it as you stuck your thumb out again. In the distance it caught your eyes. The glint of steel and large wheels. Looked to be some type of Semi.
As the truck rolled to a stop you could only stare up in shock… you hadn’t expected him to even stop for you considering but, at this rate to get out of the heat it was a welcome change. You quickly climbed up to open the door. The welcome gust of air conditioning causing you to let out a sigh of relief.
“Hey thanks man! I appreciate it!” You said quickly as you adjusted your bag to slide it off your back to set it between your legs. You reached over the center console to shake the man’s hand. “(Y/N)! Nice to meet you pal!” You said with a toothy grin before the man held his hand out. It practically engulfed yours. Christ you hadn’t noticed it but this guy was a mammoth! Long dark brown hair pulled back into a low ponytail, sunglasses, leather jacket and matching pants. You didn’t know many truckers… but you were pretty sure they didn’t dress like this most of the time.
“Diesel.” He stated as he shook your hand. You could only snicker for a moment.
“Fitting name huh?” You asked with a smile before he rolled his eyes.
“Yeah. You should meet my sister Petrol.” He smirked before pointing to the back with his thumb. “You can just huck your stuff back in the sleeper. I don’t use it.” You nodded quickly. Shifting in the seat to set your knees on it to reach back and throw your bag in the back. Diesel watched as you did. He paused for a moment however as he caught a glance to the bandana in your right pocket. Orange in color. The glance was quick. Before his eyes returned to the front window and you finally sat back down correctly.
“So.” His voice even in a relaxed state was booming. “Where you going huh?”
“Wherever you’re willing to take me! I’m just letting the people of the road take me around.” You smiled fondly. As if this was just a normal everyday occurrence.
“So, you’re just…hitchhiking too wherever?” He asked the question slowly to make sure he was getting it right. You gave a curt nod his way.
“Eyup! Just letting kind drivers like yourself drive me around for however long you want till you grow sick of me and kick me off.” You paused for a moment. “Or kill me but I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon.”
Diesel let out a small grunt as he began to drive again. “Well since you’re going nowhere. I’m heading to a stop for the night to fuel up.” You nodded.
“Fine by me! I’ve stayed at plenty of stops. They’re pretty cool.” You set your hands on your lap. Absentmindedly tapping your thighs before looking to the radio that played a dull tune. “Any tapes?” You asked as your hand went to Reach for the dial.
“Don’t mess with it too much.” He said quickly, shooting a glance to you that you could feel behind the gaze of his sunglasses. You pulled your hands away and nodded quickly. “My truck. My rules.” You nodded again.
“You got it sir.”
The trip was silent. Occasionally you and Diesel would talk. Diesel didn’t seem to be much of a talker though. Answers short and curt usually when you asked. However sometimes his answers had you intrigued, work as a bodyguard specifically.
“I mean I can understand why this guy would pick you. You could probably kick anyone's ass.” Your arm was resting against the window, hand propping your head up as you looked over to him.
Diesel chuckled for a moment. Shrugging his shoulders. “Eh. Pretty much. It was fun I guess. Paid good.”
“And your person?”
“My person?”
You rolled your eyes. “The person you guarded! Was he cool? Oh oh! Was he like a criminal?” You asked with excitement in your tone. “The president?”
“No no. No one big like that. Just a wrestler.”
“Wrestler...? The hell they need protection from?”
“With an ego like his? And a mouth that didn’t know when to stop? He needed all the help he could get.” He let out a small breath. “Shawn was cool… we were tight.”
“Like. Tight tight or…?” You trailed on with a quirked brow.
“Tight Tight.”
The answer was enough for you. Smiling as you looked forward. “Nice man…” you nodded, silence falling over the two of you again.
By the time the two of you had pulled into the stop the sun was beginning to fade, you stretched your arms with a small sigh. “So, you want me to hop off here? Or can I crash with you tonight?” You asked with a smile.
“I don’t care what you do. Whatever works for me. You’re not too much to handle.” He said with his own stretch before his hands landed back on the wheel.
Tap tap, ti tap tap.
You quirked your brow. Diesel looked over to you. Silent for a moment. “I’m gonna fill her up.” He said before getting up. You watched as he hopped out of the truck and towards the building. You let out a small huff, leaning back and going to turn up the radio to listen to whatever rock was playing on the radio.
Once the door opened you looked over. Seeing him place a receipt down on the seat before closing the door again. Glancing to the side mirror you watched as he went to fill up the tank. How much gas did these things even take… you couldn’t imagine how expensive it probably was. You glanced towards the receipt again. Picking it up and noticing the purchase of a shower too. Your heart skipped a beat, and you felt a heat growing in your lower stomach. You glanced towards the mirror again, catching the boot tapping against pavement… he had to know. He had too. You looked forward again. It couldn’t just be a coincidence, right? It had to be real. Once he finished filling the tank you watched him walk off the shower building. You swallowed a lump you hadn’t realized formed in your throat before watching him disappear behind the door.
You quickly unbuckled. Reaching behind yourself for your bag to sift through the contents. You were half worried you used your last condom.
With the guy with the van but, just as you were losing hope the packaged rubber found you.  You almost shed a tear as you slid it in your pocket. Maybe God was on your side.
Jumping down from your seat and making your way to the numbered stall he chose. You stood in front of it for a few moments before shaking away your giddiness. you tried your best to mimic the tapping he did on the steering wheel with your knock.
Knock knock knknock knock.
You heard the lock click and you quickly went to push into the shower room with a grin on your face.
“Half worried you wouldn’t get it.” Diesel started with a smirk, and you rolled your eyes. He sat himself on the toilet in the stall. Legs spread with a cockiness radiating off of him almost.
“I’m not an idiot you know? I know what I’m doing?” You said as you walked over, wrapping your arms over his shoulders. A smile tugging on your lips. “Are you a no kissing guy?” You asked as you went to press yourself against him. “Cause that would make me really sad.” You pouted and Diesel chuckled.
“Hey I’m like you. Anything.” You grinned at his answers before leaning in to smash your lips against his. Luckily, he met your intensity, grabbing your hips to pull you into his lap. The two of you stayed like that for a while. Nipping at lips and feeling each other up before you pulled away with a pant. Lips red from the frantic make out session. “What’s the plan big guy?” You asked with a smile as you went to sink to your knees. Diesel shook his head.
“While I appreciate the offer I kinda wanna get straight to the point.” He said as he went to rest a hand under your chin to ease you back up. You chuckled softly.
“Oh! What a gentleman you are.” You chuckled and Diesel rolled his eyes.
“You got a rubber?” He asked and you reached into your pocket to reveal the packaged rubber. Diesel nodded and his eyes trailed to the shower.
You let out a sharp cry as he kept rapidly pounding into you. Your attempts to stay quiet futile as you felt your face pressed against the cool wall of the shower. You prayed there was no one in the one next door. You doubted they wanted to hear you getting your guts rearranged. Once he let go of your arms you used them to help prop you against the wall, your legs starting to shake with each thrust.
“Fuck! Fuck!” You yelled looking back. “Cmon Fuck me up!” You said before gasping as you felt his hand engulf your hip as he grunted in response and thrusted deep. Your legs nearly buckled as you saw stars. “Oh fuck… fuck fuck fuck Diesel.” You slurred hands struggling to grip at the wall. You went instead to Try and cling haphazardly to the small shelf in the shower. You felt him raise your hips slightly to get you to stand. Your back pressing against his wet chest as he used his free hand to grab you chin, making your turn to face him as he went to kiss you roughly again. You moaned deeply into the kiss as you felt a coil in your stomach snap, your back arching as you came, your body turning to jelly as Diesel quickened the pace of his own hips and you felt him shudder above you. His arms darted to wrap around you to Prevent you from falling forward. The two of you panted for a moment before you looked up to him with a small smile. He stared for a moment before giving you his own back with a chuckle.
The two of you sat in silence on the pavement outside, say for the hum of the overhead radio. Enjoying the delicacy of cheap truck stop chili dogs and a cigarette shared between both of you. The gentleman had offered after railing you. So far it had been the best aftercare yet on your trip. The Arizona air a bit chilled now under the light of the moon.
“So.” Diesel began after wiping his hands off with one of the napkins. You quirked a brow as you looked over taking another bite. “You sure you got nowhere specific to go?”
“Nah not really. Just doing my own thing.”
He nodded. Moving his gaze forward.
“I’m going up to Oregon for this delivery… you wanna stick for the ride?”
You smiled a bit. Looking forward as well towards his truck. “Yeah. I think that could be a nice change of scenery.”

'Hands Of Vengeance.'
Tumblr media
The following story is about a killer who was put to death in the electric chair and then buried in the prison grounds but his hands re-emerge and go on a rampage.
Hope you like it.
'For fucks sake can you motherfuckers strap me in already, I will gladly flick the switch myself to get away from everyone on this fucked up planet.'
Robert Jenkins a huge white prison guard who has worked at San Quentin for twenty years rolls his eyes as he approaches the cell of a condemned man named Elijah Pope.
'Settle down Pope and eat your last meal or I will come in and shove it down your throat.'
'Fuck you Jenkins' Pope screams out 'I asked for a large pepperoni pizza three chicken burgers a tub of chocolate ice cream and a pint of Dr Pepper but what do I get? nothing but a couple of roast potatoes a slice of pecan pie and a can of Pepsi.'
'Go and get the warden right now or I will hang myself with my own shoelaces.'
'You aren't wearing any shoelaces you dumb fuck and you should be thankful for the small portions because come frying time you will be shitting out bricks.'
'Now shut the fuck up and finish what you got before I shove my baton up your scrawny ass.'
Pope stares back at Jenkins in contempt 'Spare me the pep talk you slimy piece of crap just let the warden know that I will see him bright and early tomorrow and when I begin to broil and bubble I will send smoke signals down to hell where all of the fuckers who put me in this goddamned cell will also feel the pain and heat.'
'I have survived this world for 28 years and after I am electrocuted I will become the master of sparks and come back and destroy anyone for has mistreated me.'
'The only person who has mistreated you Pope is yourself , all of your wounds are self inflicted, you committed all of the crimes that put you where you are today so stop your whining and take your medicine like a man.'
As he walks away Jenkin's adams apple bobs up and down in worry because of all the prisoners he has come across during his time in this hell hole Elijah Pope is by far the craziest, meanest of them all so come morning when Pope leaves this earth he will thank the lord when the evil little man is gone for good.
Pope only stands a smidge over 5' tall and weighs about the same as a teenager and who some say looks like Kevin Bacon on crack may be small in stature but don't be fooled he is one of the meanest criminals in America.
He first came under the radar of the authorities when he was only ten years of age when he attacked another boy with a knife after the victim refused to hand over his wallet.
For that crime he spent five years in juvenile detention.
After his release Pope robbed a convenience store of a measly twenty bucks and as he made his getaway he turned and shot the owner and his female assistant killing them both.
After that Pope went underground eluding the authorities , for that crime Pope entered the F.B.I.'s most wanted list.
Between 2007 till 2011 a serial killer roamed the streets of Los Angeles, in that time he murdered 20 known victims but it is believed that the total could reach as high 60.
All victims were young girls with short brown hair between the ages of 14 to 18 years old but luckily with the use of the latest DNA technology Elijah Pope was identified as the perpetrator and he was arrested without incident on 6th July 2011.
A year later despite protesting his innocence 18 year old Elijah Pope is brought to trial before judge Walter B Carruthers a man with little time for the criminals who sit in the dock under his worship.
Popes lawyer Paul Drew is a young attorney with little time spent in an actual courtroom and now here he is defending an alleged serial killer.
The prosecutor a long time trial lawyer named Daniel Hopkins who can talk the talk with the best of them begins proceedings telling the court that Elijah Pope is a predator who took the lives of a innocent shopkeeper and a member of his staff but then he went on to become one of the nations worst serial killers.
Twelve weeks later with Popes lawyer proving to be next to useless when it comes to giving his client the best advice sits next to Elijah as the prosecutor sums up proceedings, 'Your honor the evidence is overwhelming, shoe prints found at many of the crime scenes match the tread on a pair shoes owned by the defendant plus the DNA evidence proves once and for all that Elijah Pope the man sitting next to his lawyer is a murderer who should be sentenced to death.'
'I rest my case your honor.'
'Does the defense have a rebuttal for the court?'
Drew begins to stand up but than changes his mind 'No your honor the defense rests.'
Pope can't stay silent any longer and stands 'What a load of absolute crap, I am no murderer, sure I am no angel but as my lawyer if he did a proper job would have found out that I was living in South Carolina at the time that these murders occurred'
Judge Carruthers bangs his gavel in fury ; Young man you are to remain silent in my courtroom or you will be gagged do you understand?'
Elijah knowing that he is fighting for his life sizes up the judge 'I am an innocent man you old fool, the so called evidence is rubbish, anyone could have worn my shoes but it is obvious that you don't want to listen so why don't you spit on your gavel and shove it where the sun don't shine.'
'TAKE HIM AWAY' Carruthers screams at a guard who grabs Pope by an arm and begins to lead him away but Pope can't resist a parting shot at his attorney 'Thanks for nothing I will see you in hell.'
At the back of the courtroom the young man who actually committed the crimes that Elijah Pope has been found guilty of silently leaves unnoticed.
Elijah is dragged downstairs to his cell where he is joined by his attorney. 'I thought that you were supposed to represent me to the best of your ability but all you did was sit there saying nothing.'
'I am sorry Elijah I know that you are upset but the evidence against you was overwhelming there was little that I could do.'
'I am innocent I tell you, why want anyone believe me?'
'Rest assured Elijah that I will appeal the decision so just bide your time and I will do all I can.'
Despite numerous appeals Popes execution is scheduled to take place tomorrow 21 September 2023.
At precisely 4.30 am Pope is lead from his cell by six prison guards.
Fully shackled in leg irons Elijah slowly shuffles down the corridor to his final destination.
Most of the prisoners on death row call out their farewells while the more subdued remain silent thankful that they get to live another day.
Entering the small room and is strapped to the electric chair securely with leather cords.
Twelve witnesses including his parents sit a mere five yards away.
The parents Brian and Maureen Pope struggle to make eye contact with their son as he awaits his fate.
They have a secret a secret that they have kept ever since the day that Elijah was born.
A secret that they plan to keep to their dying day.
At 4.58 warden Ian Baldacci a cruel bitter man who has overseen the executions of 28 men looks over to the phone hanging on the wall half expecting it to ring but as the seconds pass by it remains silent.
A minute later the warden asks Pope if he has any last words 'I surely do warden, everybody knows that i am no angel but I am innocent of murder.'
Taking a second to compose himself Pope turns his head and stares directly into the eyes of the warden' Let me tell you now warden if you flick the switch and send me to my death I will come back from hell and kill you at the first opportunity.'
'Mark my words when I return blood will flow from the bodies of all of those responsible for my demise.'
The twelve witnesses are visibly shaken by the outburst and cower back in fright.
Even warden Baldacci is disturbed by Popes words so when the clock ticks over to 5.00 he hits the switch sending the evil fucker to hell where he belongs.
Pope is slammed back by the charge of electricity with whiffs of smoke escaping from his mouth and nostrils while his skin begins to burn and blister.
Convulsing violently Pope takes one of his last breathes, deep inside his bones crack and his marrow boils.
The leather straps bite deep into Popes wrists and when the skin and tissue melt away the restraints cut all the way through to cauterize and fall to the floor of the death chamber.
Thankfully the curtains have already been drawn so none of the witnesses saw the dismembered hands fall away in a shower of blood and steam.
At 6.07 Pope is pronounced dead by the prison doctor Marcus Clarke who despite seeing many dead prisoners is shocked by the sight of the pair of hands that still twitch on the floor near his feet.
After the smell of death dissipates Popes smoldering body is removed from the electric chair and his remains are carefully into a body bag by two prison trustees, the younger of the two has the ghastly task of picking up the hands before he gingerly places them on the chest of the condemned.
The body bag is loaded into a van and driven 500 yards to the northern corner of the prison where it is parked near to a recently dug grave.
The body bag is lowered without ceremony into the hole while up in his office Warden Baldacci watches proceedings with interest. 'You are where you belong Pope may your body rot and your soul travel to hell.'
Three months later under the cover of darkness a single human hand pokes through the surface of an unmarked grave.
Another hand suddenly appears and they scurry over to the prison wall, then using all of their strength the hands grapple up the wall slip through the razor wire and drop down onto the grass on the other side.
The pair of hands hide in the foliage for awhile than they move forward in anticipation for the arrival of the garbage where they will hitchhike a ride on the first step of a journey along the road where they will seek an overdue quest for a bloody vengeance against those who committed a wrong against Elijah Kevin Pope.
THE END.
Part Two coming soon.

Spinach potato tomato lasagna
1-2 onions (depending on size)
6 potatoes (600 grams)
2 tbsp butter
6-8 tomatoes (600 grams)
Olive oil
Much frozen or fresh Spinach (800 grams)
2 cups of paneer/ricotta (200 grams)
2 tbsp Italian seasoning (or 4, let your heart decide)
5 cloves of garlic
2 cups of mozzarella cheese
@ self, remember to wash your veggies. This recipe will assume no prep bc i hate recipes that go like, 6 boiled potatoes. There are also steps that can be done out of order, like mashing the potatoes can be done after the tomatoes.
Pre-prep a) Throw onions in the freezer so they're less annoying to cut. b) Pre-heat your oven to 375F (200C).
Potatoes a) Peel the potatoes. (You can also wait till they're boiled to peel them if you like.) b) Boil them till they're soft and forkable. This will take 10-30 minutes, depending on the kind of potato. c) Mash potats. Add butter or cream.
Tomatoes a) Dice them or else quarter them then blitz them in a blender. b) Chop your onions or blitz them too. c) Add 1 tbsp olive oil to a large pot on high. Add onions. d) Are the onions translucent? cool, add the tomatoes e) Let this baby come to a boil, turn the heat down f) Add your spices - you can add them earlier but I don't like the risk of them burning. 1 tbsp Italian seasoning and 3 cloves of garlic. g) Let it simmer for however long you have. I like to let it have half an hour while I'm doing the other things.
Spinach a) If your spinach is fresh, chop it. b) Add olive oil and spinach to a medium pot. c) Add 1 tbsp Italian seasoning and 2 cloves of garlic. d) Cook until the spinach is completely wilted and then a few minutes more for good measure. Turn off the heat. e) Grate your paneer/ricotta. f) When the spinach cools down, mix up the spinach with the paneer/ricotta.
Assembly a) Pull out an oven-safe Pyrex or whatever bakeware you use that has walls. Butter/oil the sides and bottom. b) Spread a layer of tomato on the bottom - try to use half of it but take however much you need to cover the bottom. c) then a layer of potato - use half and your hands will be the best for spreading it. d) Now the spinach mixture - your hands will also be the best at spreading this one. e) a layer of mozzarella Repeat b)-e) so you have two layers. if you have more, idk, make a third layer or eat it as is.
Bake 25-30 minutes in the oven. Make sure to use the broil function if it exists. Basically, you want some nice browning on top. Everything is cooked, we just need it hot and gooey and beautiful looking. It might bubble too as it heats all the way through.
Serve Don't burn your hands while getting it out, use oven mitts or trivets!

Paneer Fried Rice Recipe
A simple recipe for fried rice made with vegetables of your choice and paneer cubes. in essence, this recipe is an extension of the famous vegetable fried rice topped with marinated paneer cubes. It can be served with Manchurian or any gravy-based curry, making it an ideal one-pot meal for lunch boxes or even for dinner.
pan sear recipe is very common and common road food in india nowadays. There are many imaginative dishes made with rice, vegetables or meat, or a combination of these. Paneer Fried Rice Recipe, in which paneer is used as a protein source, is one such desi stir fry recipe.
i have posted few rice recipes till now but this one combines indian and chinese flavors in a fresh way. The main reason for this is the combination of paneer with boiled vegetables and rice. I love this recipe for two reasons. There's a reason that my number one fixing here is cheese. Moreover, the second, the recipe is in the form of paneer pan sear. I really hate straight up fried rice recipes. Along with that, I need some protein. Since I am a vegetarian, I always pair my fried rice with a potato based curry or dal fry. Having said that, it tops the protein balance in the recipe.
Paneer Fried Rice Recipe at any rate, i would like to end this post with some tips, ideas, variations for a perfect paneer broiled rice recipe. firstly, for this recipe, dry or leftover basmati rice is highly recommended. If you want to use freshly cooked rice, take care to make it moisture free by drying it on a plate. Other than that, with regards to detailing vegetables, it's completely simple. Basic vegetables are included, but you can easily experiment based on your own preferences. finally, i have used fresh desi made paneer 3d squares for this recipe. You should use fresh locally made or locally obtained cheese 3D squares that have not yet been frozen as ice.
Ingredients for Paneer Fried Rice Recipe:-
To marinate and roast the paneer-
200 gram cubes paneer
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
¾ tsp Kashmiri red chili powder
¼ tsp salt
2 tsp oil
For fried rice-
2 tbsp oil
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
½ onion, finely chopped
4 tbsp spring onion, chopped
½ carrot chopped
4 beans chopped
¼ red bell pepper chopped
¼ green capsicum chopped
3 tbsp shredded cabbage
1 tsp chili sauce
1 tbsp Vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
½ tsp black pepper powder
½ tsp
3 cups cooked rice
Method to make Paneer Fried Rice Recipe:-
1. To begin making the Paneer Fried Rice Recipe, the first step is to marinate the paneer.
2. For that we have to first take a big bowl to marinate the paneer.
3. Now put paneer pieces in the bowl and add ginger garlic paste, red chili powder, and salt.
4. Now everyone has to mix it well and keep the paneer for 20-25 minutes.
5. Now put oil in the pan and heat it. When the oil gets hot. Marinated paneer pieces are to be put in hot oil.
6. Now roast the paneer on medium heat till it turns golden brown. Do not cook the paneer for a long time, otherwise the paneer will turn into rubber foam.
7. Whose taste is not good at all to eat.
8. Now we have to take a big pan, put oil in it and heat it so that the oil becomes hot. So add finely chopped garlic clove and add onion in it.
9. Now the onion has to be roasted on high flame.
10. Now add carrots, beans, red capsicum and green capsicum to it.
11. Now roast the vegetables on high flame till half cooked.
12. Now put cabbage in it and fry it while stirring for a minute.
13. Now when the vegetables are cooked, add chili sauce, vinegar, soya sauce, crushed black pepper and 1/2 tsp salt.
14. Now all the sauces have to be cooked by mixing them well.
15. Now add cooked rice to it and mix well. If you have cooked rice, you can use that too.
16. Now add rice and roast it on high flame while cooking it well.
17. Now garnish with coriander leaves and spring onions and enjoy Paneer Fried Rice with Cabbage Gravy Manchurian Recipe.

1/4 cup water (or chicken broth)
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar, or any white vinegar)
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat the grill or broiler in the oven to high. Just before cooking, season chops with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
In a pan or skillet, heat the oil until it is hot. Chops should be seared until golden and fully cooked on all sides (about 4-5 minutes each side). Move to a platter and reserve.
Heat to a medium setting. In the same pan, melt butter while scraping away any browned bits from the bottom. Garlic is cooked till aromatic (about 30 seconds). Honey, vinegar, and water are added. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook, stirring periodically, until the sauce slightly thickens and reduces (approximately 3 to 4 minutes).
Add pork back into the pan, baste generously with the sauce and broil/grill for 1-2 minutes, or until edges are slightly charred.
Garnish with parsley and serve over vegetables, rice, pasta or with a salad.

1 clove garlic minced,
2 tbl tomato paste,
2 tbl corn starch,
2 cups veggie broth,
1 tbl balsamic vinegar,
1/2 tsp oregano,
1/2 tsp thyme,
1 bay leaf,
1 cup frozen corn,
1 cup frozen peas,
1 tbl Worcestershire sauce
For the mash:
1/4 cup dairy free cream cheese,
1/2 cup non dairy milk,
1/4 cup dairy free butter,
s/p to taste
What you do
1️⃣ Brush potatoes with oil, pierce with fork on both sides. Bake at 375F for one hour or air fry at 400 F for 40 minutes
2️⃣ While potatoes are baking, in a large sauté pan/pot heat 2 tbl of oil over medium, add carrots & onion, cook 5-7 min till onion is translucent & carrots soften.
3️⃣ Add crumbles & heat according to package directions until browned. I cooked my crumbles for 3 min. Stir in garlic, corn starch, tomato paste stirring continuously for 1-2 min until paste darkens in color
4️⃣ Add broth, vinegar, & spices. Scrape up any brown bits, simmer low for 10 min stirring occasionally.
5️⃣Add frozen veggies & Worcestershire sauce. Take out bay leaf. Adjust seasonings. Heat through.
6️⃣ When potatoes are cool enough to handle, split each in half, scoop out middle, leaving skins intact. Place skins on parchment lined baking sheet, & place potatoes in a bowl. Mash with fork or use a ricer (preferred method) then add milk, butter, cream cheese, s/p, & mix together till smooth.
7️⃣Next pack potato skins with veggie crumble. Fill skins all the way to the top. Then spread a thick layer of mash evenly across the tops of the crumble.
8️⃣ Bake at 350 F for 10 min then broil on top rack for  2 min to crisp up tops of potato. Enjoy!!!

No. 2.—SAVE-ALL SOUP.
Collect the scraps left from breakfast and dinner, for instance, a half pint of soup, a gill of gravy, a half pint of mashed turnip or potato, a little macaroni cooked with cheese, a sour baked apple or[29] broiled chop or steak, etc., etc.; put them in the stock pot or soup kettle with sufficient cold water, simmer for an hour, removing any scum that rises, then strain and set aside. Next day remove the grease, put the soup to cook, and when it boils, season with salt and pepper, and if it seems to need other seasoning add a pinch Of thyme, or celery seed, or a teaspoonful of sugar. It is sometimes well to put half a bay leaf and two or three cloves in the kettle with the scraps. The flavorings and spices required in a mixed soup of this description depend greatly upon the nature of the scraps used. If they are mostly light and delicate, thyme, mace, celery, or parsley can be added; if dark and heavy, cloves, bay leaf, sweet marjoram or a little Worcestershire sauce, or walnut or other catsup can be used more appropriately. Sometimes an ounce each of butter and flour cooked together in a saucepan till browned, and then added to the soup, give it the very thing it lacks; or it may be that the flour stirred with a gill of cold sweet cream is what is needed to make it a perfect soup.
To select and harmonize the materials for a mixed soup is one of the best evidences of culinary capacity; and the cook who can do this successfully,[30] is qualified to prepare a soup of the most complex as well as one of the simplest character, without regard to its name or class.
Here’s another cracker from 1882 that’s basically “Take your leftovers and boil them to hell and back. Add seasoning :)”

WIP...art-manipulation as visual inspiration for The Elegy of Dead Kingdoms...(crossover of StarWars/revamped Thrawn trilogy, FireFly/Serenity, and the Keltiad...also, spoof SpaceOpera-RockOpera featuring anyone from David Bowie, to LED Zepplin, NewOrder, U2, Ah-Ha...etc)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~Background
~ At the impetus of River Tam, and the Operative, the Serenity’s renegade crew defies transit laws prohibiting unauthorized access to the wormhole connecting Terran space with the quadrant of the Republic Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Having only a fragmented record mentioning a lone survivor from a planetary massacre, the crew track rumors of a psionically gifted orphan said to have come from the Terran Fringe system of New Celtica, possessing the ability of manipulating the molecular structure of organic matter. An exile once in the service of Palpatine, whose skill of biokinesis Thrawn covets to stabilize the unpredictable violence of his cloned hybrids. A woman with adversaries on both sides of the wormhole, winning a Jedi to her cause, and determined to discover the key to a secret kept hidden for a thousand years. A buried legend of Old Terra, Earth That Was, that may be the last defense between the ancient darkness wakened by Thrawn‘s pursuit of absolute dominion, and the destruction of all life throughout the galaxy...(queue *cinematic drama music*)...
Somewhere between the battle of the Dark Force fleet, and Wayland, MonMontha offers a last ditch effort at negotiation with Thrawn. Imperial forces victorious in recent campaigns, have pushed back the RepublicAlliance to their InnerPlanetary systems. Rogue genetic scientists from the Terran quadrant, refusing to abandon their research after the PAX Hydrochlorate failure on Miranda, found a ready market amid trans-conduit Imperial war-profiteers, for their newest discovery. An archaic protogenome derived from dark-matter structures, endowing hybridized Reaver clones with real-time tissue regenerative capacity. These clones now render Thrawn’s army nearly indestructible. The scene above is merely my toying with a concept of the ethereal, and formidable River Tam crossing paths with the illustrious brilliance embodied in the GrandAdmiral Thrawn...
~scene~
On Coruscant, during Monmontha’s attempt at negotiating a peace, Rhyanon ferch Garowen (alluded to above) blatantly rejects Thrawn‘s coercive effort at bringing her to his side during a dinner banquet. B/c of this act of arrogance, Thrawn vows no mercy in the progression of his campaign, conquering and converting sector upon sector into a dark matter/anti-matter morass which becomes dubbed The Dimensional Rift, despite the valiant efforts of the Republic Alliance squadrons, directed by LukeSkywalker, and allies, to fend off the onslaught of Thrawn’s Dreadnaught fleet.
Before all that though, with the evening following the dinner still at hand, Thrawn abides by the Old Republic etiquette of host and guest, honoring civil diplomacy amongst enemies. A requisite social diversion-music or a dance-ensuing in the Palace reception hall holds no interest to him in Rhyanon’s absence. Preferring solitude, he meanders out to a balcony overlooking Coruscant’s expanse of lights, twinkling ladders of motion, reaching up to the lower atmosphere. And here, she follows after him minutes later, floating between shadows, a specter of innocence and dangerous beauty.
She pauses beneath a statue of some nameless goddess, a figure of Victory or Life, a pretension of lesser cultures. Weaker nations seeking hope in empty icons. The girl, young woman really, by the standards of human chronology, offers an entirely different contemplation.
From the sofa where he’s seated, viewing her from across the fountain, Thrawn appreciates the lithe symmetry of her form, a subtle disguise of strength and grace. Dangerous beauty. “You’re very like her, River Tam. A work of art, a living masterpiece,” he comments.
For as young as she is, not more than 20 years surely, she carries herself with a remarkable serenity. Stepping lightly around the other sofa, she leans her hip against the cushioned neck rest. Barely flickering an eyelid, she focuses luminous dark eyes on him, shining through the mottled patterns of light scattered between them.
Her voice resembles her figure, light and flowing. “A failed experiment, you mean, Mitth’raw’nuruodo.” Flawlessly, she speaks his name, though he knows they weren’t introduced at any point previous to this moment. ”I was supposed to be like them—the researchers were trying to make me like them. One of your chimeric hybrids.”
“Ah, the one who got away,“ he muses. Something at that stirs a flicker in her dark gaze. “Yes, little Albatross, I read the classified reports of your Core Parliament. About your brother, the escape. An elegant devising. And a lesson as to the deficiencies of private-contract security.“
Tension firms a line between her brows, hardens her expression as she glances away from him for a moment. “It wouldn’t have mattered.“
His derision comes out as a short, barking laugh. “Why? Because your escape resulted more from the incompetence of poorly trained guards than the alleged skill of your brigand crew mates?
Her attention swings back to him, conviction firm in her words. “No. Because my brother watches out for me. He protects me. And he loves me.”
Thrawn says nothing, stoic against her emotion, such a human flaw. Rubbing his thumb and middle finger together, of the hand draped eloquently off the arm-wrest, he continues sizing up this most intriguing amalgam of softness and mettle.
”Love is a weakness,” satisfaction grim in his tone, picking at a piece of this puzzle embodied by River Tam. Toying with it, testing how she’ll react. “It causes distraction from the warrior’s path. Makes them vulnerable to fear. And you, little Albatross, were foremost, molded as a weapon. A living masterpiece of perfection.”
Her lids slant, head tipped to the side slightly. “I dream about them still. The other test subjects. The Reavers. The dreams used to frighten me. They were worse when the scientists would be administering some new cocktail. They’re not as bad as they used to be, since Miranda. But their voices—I...hear them-“a frown ghosting over her features”-though I’ve learned to hush them.”
”I think you hear a lot more than that, River Tam.”
Challenge broods in a strange magnetism between them. ”So do you,” she says mildly, sending a wary shiver over his skin. How she knows about inoculating himself with the protogenome he can’t begin—
-of course he can. She’s a mind-reader, a telepath. What can’t she pick out of the whirl of thought composing humanoid psyches if she’s so determined?
His awareness smolders like embers in a breeze, open to the Shadow’s primordial sequences merged into his own cells. Enhancing perception, layers of reality peeled back when he channels this infernal heat coursing through his blood. Vision, smell, sound, his mind branching like light off a faceted diamond, reflecting images in a 1000 different plains. And Thrawn, glorying in the draught of fractured darkness.
River’s eyes glint in guarded scrutiny, attuned, perhaps to the whisper of power subsumed by Thrawn’s cultivated urbanity. Wandering over to where he’s seated, she lowers herself next to him on the couch. Her mind brushes against his like leaves floating upon a watery surface, remaining on the periphery without venturing into the depths.
“Chiis physiology-Stamina, strength, resilience against extremes of physical exposure. Superior reflexes and intellect inherent to your species, allowing adaptive advantages over the millennia. A robust psychology keeping you from succumbing to the deterioration of sensory assimilation, the way your clones eventually will. A perfect medium for channeling the Shadow.”
Thrawn wonders where she’s going with her exposition. She bears the full weight of his scorching gaze with nary a flinch. The fey-like curiosity alive across her youthful grace causes a rare unease, unused to be so unabashedly studied. He holds himself still, tensing at the light pressure of her hand taking his out of his lap, wrapping delicate fingers over a wrist corded by muscle.
”Everyone has a weakness,” she says. “Even you.”
Anger snarls beneath the surface of his poise, a broiling red froth that must have blazed up in his gaze. ”Whatever you think you see child, you take liberties of interpretation,” speaking in cold, controlled wrath before which she pales, breathing deep to collect herself. The pressure of her touch on his wrist, though, remains steady.
Her hand, slender fingers resting atop his own, no suggestion of anything other than gentleness. His own hand, larger, stronger, a grip that could crack her bones with minimal exertion. Strangle the air from her lungs, twist her fragile neck like silken twine. Tangling the rich brown waves of her hair in his grasp, forcing her head back till her spine might snap, plundering her mouth as he would plunder her body. Raze her mind till she was left a weeping pile of bruised limbs and torn clothes, cowering on the chill marble floor, her thighs bleeding like the rags of her mind.
Unperturbed, she shares every image coalesced in his thoughts. Each portrait of violence fading into the recess of darkness where the Shadow brews and twists like smoke above the infernal hells. As well, he’s viewed the record of her encounter with the Reavers after Miranda. Like Rhyanon, she would fight him with a skill capable of delaying the ultimate conquest. This wisp of a child, scarcely into womanhood, moving like sand and water, a song of death captured in every leap and twist. Every dive and slash as she wound a choreography of slaughter against an entire pack of beastial invaders. The outcome inevitably in his favor, if for no other reason than the greater strength of his sheer physicality would overwhelm, exhaust her eventually, compared to human anatomic inadequacy.
“A matter of minutes, to take you. An act of utility, really--to break you. Make you beg for a mercy that would never come.“
Her eyebrow crooks up, scolding or skepticism. “But you wouldn’t do that, any of those things.”
Her patient humoring isn’t what he anticipated. ”What makes you think so?” he asks out of mere speculation, momentarily forgetting the antagonizing subtlety guiding their conversation.
”Because you‘ve seen what I am. The weapon, not the woman. And,“ she says, sighing with an almost child-like assurance, looking out to the far horizon, “because seduction isn’t your weakness. She is.”
Damn the girl, for gut-punching through his composure with such guileless effort. His gaze follows hers, tracking the aerial traffic dotting Coruscant’s night skies in a flickering menagerie. He concentrates on keeping his breathing even, stilling his mind, as he considers his reply. The silhouettes of soaring towers outlined by shimmering lights blot out the sky, the glow which would normally be visible on a less metropolitan planet, of satellites in orbit, and stars far beyond.
”One word,” he says finally. “She could have changed the tide of this war for the Republic with one word.“
She turns, a searching intensity in her deep gaze. Seeing too much within him. “So could you, change the tide of this war for Republic,” she says softly, giving a gentle squeeze of his wrist.
Impatient and irritated with the poignancy in her tone, Thrawn shakes her hand off. “She has no idea, the fate to which she’s condemned the galaxy,” he tells her with a hard look, rising off the sofa. He looms over her, eyes burning across her face, so that for the first time, she shudders away from the brewing wrath. He marvels again, the steel disguised beneath the seeming delicacy of her body. Her sandeled feet tucked beneath her on the sofa, the fabric of her dress, simple design of polyfiber cotton, drapes fine curves of breast, hip, and thigh.
Despite her attention fastened upon the night horizon, nothing of intimidation colors her posture, but sadness tinges the turned-down line of her lips. He bows his head to her before heading back to the reception hall lying through a corridor adjoined to the balcony. A salute, a parting to conceal his remorse of the lost fate she chooses with her friends and allies.
“And you, little Albatross,“ he rasps in dire promise, the epithet snaring her surprised glance up at him. “You have no idea what’s coming. None of you do.”
A wasted masterpiece of living art, dangerous beauty.
Watching him stride away into the dim hall, the Grand Admiral’s disappointment aches like an overstrained joint. Bothersome, but eventually fading unless exacerbated. In his absence, the darkness hovers about her, the balcony esconsed, now, in transient quiet. Illusory peace.
Alive, so alive, the hum of myriad thoughts, voices, hopes, griefs—the gambit composing sentient life throughout the city. The planet. Her mind-reading truly can’t extend with any precision beyond the palace, but a general hum always persists in the background of her consciousness. The sound of living beings. A vibration silenced forever upon Miranda.
That silence had almost broken her sanity more than any experimentation. As scientists sought to harness innate hyper-sensory perception with neurochemical alterations, subjecting her to an intensive programming, molding her mind-body duplex into prime mental and physical conditioning. In the process, she was often torn, battered, abused, and tortured, her mind confused, shifting between lucidity and dissociation and nightmare. But never breaking.
The sound of death, of nothing. Emptiness like a vacuum, no thought, or feeling. Miranda had almost broken her. Miranda, it turned out, opened the road to a recovery of herself. What she is, what she’s meant to be? No one seems to know. At least not since Simon rescued her from the illicit lab which had been her prison. Hyper-awareness, sensory adepts, psychic traits expressed amongst humans were hardly uncommon through the Terran quadrant, both Core and Fringe systems. Posited by some scientists as a natural development of sentient consciousness, induced by interstellar travel over the centuries.
Among these foreign systems across the wormhole, peoples attributed such gifts to some metaphysical energy field. The Force. Light and Dark. The association, to River’s thinking, paradoxical for a property endemic to all beings, carrying no inherent morality until determined by the intent of the wielder. Perhaps she just didn’t quite grasp its intricacies as yet, conceding that nuances of intuition, emotion, passive reception, meditation still often eluded her. The Force embedded such concepts, rather than the more actualized focus of psychic traits held by the majority of systems native to the Terran quadrant.
What she is. What she‘s meant to be—*a weapon, a work of art*. *No*, she answers her own query, the feeling of defiance liberating. *A failed experiment. The one who got away.*
”And you forget,“ she whispers to the attentive night. “I can still hear them in my head. All the time. Just like you do, Mitt’raw’nuruodo.”
Miranda is not what Thrawn has in mind, that sort of emptiness. He wants something more. Under Imperium’s auspices, subjugating and assimilating one star system after another, spreading this corruption of time and reality, bleeding the Dark Entity’s ravenous, primordial substance like an oil-slick settling into the sinkholes of what had been viable Star-systems. Seeding these tortured hybrids cloned of Reavers, and whatever other mutated derangements of horror will fuse and divide in an incubator. With his enhanced soldiers, their minds a racket of incessant savagery, submission to Thrawn throughout the galaxy seems inevitable. Especially now that Intel, and Republic specialists working with Rhyanon, recently confirmed the adaptive capacity of certain hybrids to infect other living creatures with their intracellular genetic material.
They’ll never be completely hushed, even in the deepest caverns of her own mind. Reavers. The chimeric hybrids. They howl, writhe, snarl, and scream in agony beyond their comprehension. But the havoc of their consciouses, keeping the hybrids contained as a utilizable resource requires increasing concentrations of sedatives, hyponotics, and psychogenic pharmaceuticals.
She can feel their echo within Thrawn, too. Not of the violence, but his craving the Shadow’s power. It’s why he covets Rhyanon-her abilities of biologic manipulation, transforming the very backbone molecules of life. Healing, rejuvenating, reconstructing, restoring from disease, infection, deterioration and decay. Thirsting for the surcease she could provide, balancing the Dark Entity’s immersion of his own constitution. A living masterpiece, the kind of gifted elegance Thrawn desired, Rhyanon, like River, was another one who’d gotten away. Another failed experiment. Another dangerous beauty.
Rhyanon loathes him. Holding her captive on his flagship under the influence of cortical inhibitors, and hallucinogens. Trying to force her into stabilizing the synaptic connections of higher brain function in his hybrids. Dampening their insanity as the cloned offspring reached maturity. Coercing her in other ways as well, while she resisted the influence of intoxicants deluging her system. That was why she rejected his play at truce earlier during the dinner, an offer to join him voluntarily. That. And the fact she and the Jedi were patently lovers. A circumstance exacerbating the already furious enmity between the Grand Admiral and Luke.
Rhyanon would use those same graces of biokinesis to tear him apart one atom at a time, despite the danger of inducing her own body’s destruction. The price of biopsionic talents, a check limiting the potential for abuse of that power over life and death. Unfortunate, in that Rhyanon’s ability, synergized with the particular strengths shared between their small group of Force-wielders and sensory adepts, offers the only potential counter against Thrawn’s growing influence.
Finding some way of battling this Dark Matter entity. This Abaddon, commanding elemental forces dating from the universe’s origins. A being capable of destroying multiple star-systems if they resist its Seeding. They’d all seen what happened on Namsonis 4 in the aftermath of losing the majority of Dreadnaughts. A desperate evacuation. A world wrenched apart like a ball of mud crushed in a fist. A solar system facing a monstrous dehiscence of time and space, heart of chaos, blowing a hole through the core of a sun, and incinerating the other 6 planets spared Namsonis’s fate. Hours later, a festering wound across the void of black, rocky debris and ionized gas discharges the last traces of a star system no longer existing between tomorrows.
Contrary to the stillness in which she sits, River’s thoughts spin countless strands in the spreading web of her mind, her fingers running absently along the ridge of her collarbone. Picturing simultaneous star-maps, envisioning parallel scenarios of navigation vectors, battle engagements, the stratified calculations worked in trans-dimensional matrices. Always hearing the Reavers seething in the recess of her soul.
Finally, arriving at some conclusion, she reveals to the passing night, ”I do know exactly what’s to come.” And maybe, maybe there’s a chance. One distant, improbable-verging on impossible-chance they have of subverting this menace before it reaches the Terran quadrant.

10 ! (share a recipe u love)
oooh I think i’ll do eggplant lasagna. a true staple in my house, it takes pretty long to make and was always special to eat. me and my siblings always got super excited when my mom made it, but nowadays we make it ourselves when my mom wants it.
Cut your eggplants (2-3) in half around the midsection and than thinly slice. The slices should be small, but not like paper. Than taking a large pan, completely coat the bottom in oil, and start frying each individual piece of eggplant. They each have to be touching the pan fully, and can’t be overlapping. Making sure the eggplant is cooked and soft, rather than black/burned, repeat the process for every single strip. While doing this, put three squares of ground beef on the stove and mash it till an even ground, spicing with garlic, white pepper, and italian seasoning. Oil is not required, because the meat releases it on its own. When the meat is fully cooked and ground, and the eggplant is all cooked but still soft, you start assembling your lasagna. Taking a large rectangular pan, place eggplant on the bottom, add ground beef, and than cheese(mozzarella is recommended) Do this until the ground beef is at the top of the pan, and instead of going right to cheese, add more eggplant strips, and than add cheese. A ton of cheese, just a bunch on top. But the entire lasagna in the oven with tinfoil on top(important!) for around 50 minutes. Afterward, remove the foul and put your overn in broil until the cheese has browned and is bubbling, still cheesy and not burnt. Serve it on top of plain white rice!

was asked for recipes ( @pairodicelost , @softbrutalist ) so here go vague “recipes” – chaotic, lo siento
to make café de olla cold brew (in theory, because all I did was use oaxacan beans for my “oaxacan cold brew” – but this can’t really go wrong? IMO):
I do quite a large amount of freshly ground coffee (ground a bit less than for a french press) + water and leave for 12-24 hours depending on my patience/desires; I do not recommend more than that because it will wreak havoc on your digestive system, havoc I tell you
boil a small amount of water with cinnamon stick, panela/piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar that comes in a big block — you could substitute a combination of brown sugar + molasses to approximate the flavor), optional but lovely additions are a touch of clove, orange peel, and star anise
cool and mix with cold brew to taste!
rosemary garlic / everything bagel seeded quinoa crackers
I don't measure terribly precisely (sometimes not at all), but put 1/4-1/3 cup of chia and slightly less of flaxseed in ~1 cup of water, mix and let sit until the water has absorbed (only takes a few minutes);
in a larger bowl measure out ~2 cups of quinoa flour (you could also cook quinoa and then blend it, have not done this with crackers but have done so in other baked goods), add some olive oil (guessing ~3  tbsp?), salt to taste
mix in the hydrated chia/flax and knead till it forms a fairly thick dough (add a bit of water if needed); separate if making 2 flavors;
add-ins:
sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds (I did a smattering), sesame (added probably half a cup),  black pepper (was generous), minced fresh garlic or garlic powder/flakes to taste (I did the latter for speed, no shame here), fresh or dried rosemary (I used home-dried), and/or if you happen to have everything bagel seasoning around (poppy seeds, black & white sesame, garlic flakes, flaked sea salt), you can just throw that in and call it a day
anyway – mix in your desired additions or any other flavor combinations you’d like, press out a thin layer on either parchment paper or oiled foil (had no paper so I went the foil route), poke holes over entire layer with a fork, and bake!
baking-wise: I live at pretty high altitude (2250 meters / 7000+ feet) so baking/cooking takes MUCH longer than at sea level, you’ll have to do some experimenting; mine were in at 325 degrees for ~40 minutes and then I had to give them an extra 15-20 minutes on a toast/broil function and higher heat to get a little browning
note: you can taste the dough at any time since there are no eggs involved; taste as you go and make sure you have enough seasonings
note: they will harden as they cool! mine came out extra crunchy but still delicious – in retrospect might have browned them slightly less

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THAT HAM 🐖🐽 Baths over. This is my spiced root beer glazed ham. Make a paste with brown sugar, dijon mustard, garlic powder, ginger powder, cardamom, black and white pepper and chili powder. Rub your ham down. Pour a can of root beer all over it. Bake it per manufacturers directions, basting often. In the last 10 minutes, bring a can of root beer to a boil tbsp mustard. Tbsp ginger powder, 3 tbsp brown sugar. Bring to a boil, make a slurry with some liquid and tbsp cornstarch. Let get THICC. Pull the hammo out. If you're strong, transfer it to a baking sheet. If you're me drain the juices. Set oven to broil. Spoon on the thickened glaze, broil ham till glaze is bubbly. HAAAMMMMMM. No worm help today. ¼ tsp kosher/sea salt (use half for table salt)
½ Tbsp neutral-flavored oil (vegetable, canola, etc)
FOR SNOW PEAS
6 snow peas
pinch kosher/sea salt (use half for table salt)
FOR SUSHI RICE
3 rice cooker cups uncooked Japanese short grain rice (540 ml)
Water
2 inch kombu (dried kelp) (5 cm)
⅓ cup rice vinegar (75 ml)
3 Tbsp sugar
1 ½ tsp kosher/sea salt (use half for table salt)
FOR UNAGI (EELS)
1 package unagi (eel) (160 g)
FOR SHRIMP
8-10 large shrimp
1 Tbsp sake
pinch kosher/sea salt (use half for table salt)
TOPPINGS (OPTIONAL)
4 Tbsp Ikura (salmon roe)
4 Tbsp shredded nori seaweed (kizami nori)
½ Tbsp toasted white sesame seeds
Directions:
TO MAKE PICKLED LOTUS ROOT & GINGER:
Combine rice vinegar, sugar, and kosher salt in a small saucepan. Bring it to boil and let the sugar dissolved completely. Set aside to cool.
Peel and cut the ginger to julienne strips (thinner the better). Peel the lotus root and cut out the edge to make a flower shape
Slice the lotus root into 1/8” (3 mm) and soak in vinegar water for 5 minutes to prevent from turning brown (just drop a few rice vinegar in water – doesn’t have to be precise).
Boil water in a small saucepan and blanch the ginger and lotus root for 3 minutes.  Drain well and transfer them to the vinegar mixture to marinate.  You can make this ahead and keep it up to 1 week in refrigerator.
TO MAKE CHIRASHI SUSHI MIX:
When the water is boiling cook kanpyo for 3 minutes. Transfer to iced water to stop cooking process and squeeze water out.
Cut kanpyo into small pieces and cut the carrot into julienne strips.
Soak dried shiitake mushrooms with ½ cup water until they are hydrated and tender. Then squeeze the mushrooms and reserve the liquid (= shiitake dashi) in the bowl.  Cut off and discard the stem.
Slice the shiitake mushrooms. Strain the reserved shiitake dashi to remove impurities. Save this shiitake dashi until you’re ready to use in Step 8.
Make a criss-cross incision at one end of the gobo. This criss-cross incision will help you shave the gobo like a pencil.  Shave into small thin pieces as you rotate the gobo.  Soak the cut pieces in water so they won’t turn brown. Change the water 1-2 times.  Drain right before you start cooking in Step 8.
In a small saucepan, bring water to boil. Quickly rinse the kanpyo in running water and drain. Rub kanpyo with 1 tsp salt. Rinse and drain well.
Add shiitake mushrooms, gobo, and kanpyo in the pot (keep the carrot aside for now). Add dashi, reserved shiitake dashi (the liquid from hydrating dried shiitake), sake, mirin, sugar, and soy sauce, and bring to simmer on medium heat.
Skim the foam and scum on the surface as much as you can, decrease the heat to simmer, and cover with Otoshibuta (drop lid). This lid ensures that ingredients are submerged under the liquid and flavorful cooking liquid circulates well. You can make one with aluminum foil easily.
Add the carrot while there is still liquid in the pot but toward the end of cooking so that you don’t overcook carrot and get mushy.  Continue to cook with Otoshibuta until the liquid is almost gone.  The whole cooking process is about 20-25 minutes depending on the heat.  Transfer the Chirashi Sushi Mix to a plate to cool completely.  If you end up with some cooking liquid, you can save a little bit so you can season the rice later.  You can make this ahead and keep it in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days.
TO MAKE EGG CREPES:
Heat the large non-stick frying pan and grease the pan with paper towel dipped in vegetable oil. Make sure to wipe off the excess oil. When the pan is hot, pour the egg mixture just enough to cover the bottom of the entire fry pan.
Gather all the ingredients.
Whisk the eggs and add the rest of ingredients into the bowl. Whisk to combine and strain the egg mixture to get silky texture.
Tilt the pan to fill the fry pan with the egg mixture and cover with the lid.  Remove from the heat and place the pan on a cold towel to cool the pan so the the egg won’t become brown.  Once the egg crepe is cooked through, transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely. Continue this process until all the egg mixture is gone.
Roll up the egg crepes and cut thinly into julienned strips. Loosen them up and set aside.  You can make this ahead and keep it in the refrigerator up to 2-3 days or freeze up to 4 weeks.
TO PREPARE SNOW PEAS:
Remove the tough strings along the edges of snow peas.  Bring water to boil in a small saucepan.  Add pinch of salt and blanch them for 2 minutes.  Drain and cut diagonally in half or thirds.
TO MAKE SUSHI RICE:
Rinse the rice, soak for 30 minutes, and drain. Put the rice in a rice cooker bowl and add the water till “Sushi” water level (a bit less than regular). Place kombu on top and start cooking. Combine the sushi vinegar ingredients in a bowl and mix together. You can microwave or heat the mixture in a saucepan over the stove to dissolve the sugar completely and remove the strong vinegar taste/smell.
TO PREPARE UNAGI
Preheat your oven to 400F (200C). As the unagi you purchased is already grilled/broiled, all you need to do is reheat. Place the unagi on a parchment paper or silicone baking sheet and bake for 7-10 minutes.  Remove from the oven and let cool.  Once it’s cool to touch, you can cut into ¼ inch (0.6 mm) pieces.  Set aside.
TO PREPARE SHRIMP:
Using a skewer, devein shrimp without removing shell.  We peel the shell after cooking to retain the flavor of the shrimp.  Boil water in a medium saucepan.  Once boiling, add sake and shrimp and simmer until pink, about 2-3 minutes. Remove the shell and set aside.
4) TO ASSEMBLE CHIRASHI SUSHI:
Start this step when all the steps above are completed.
Discard the kombu from sushi rice and transfer to Hangiri (or a large serving platter). If you use hangiri, quickly run water so rice doesn’t stick. Pour sushi vinegar over the rice paddle to evenly distribute sushi vinegar over rice. With the rice paddle, slice the rice at a 45 degree angle to separate the rice instead of mixing.  At the same time you need to use a fan to cool rice so the rice will shine and doesn’t get mushy.
Gather all the toppings you’ve prepared.
Once the sushi rice is cooled, squeeze the Chirashi Sushi Mix to remove excess liquid (otherwise rice gets too soggy) and combine with sushi rice. You can always add a few Tbsp of reserved liquid to season the rice if you like (I don’t usually do it).
First, spread the shredded egg crepe. Decorate the chirashi sushi as you like. I usually start from lotus root, shrimp, unagi, snow peas, ikura, sesame seeds, and nori in the center.  Enjoy!

Consider in Choosing Healthy Food For Your Family
Tumblr media
Habits are generally formed from the early stages in our life till we grow old. Forming habits, most of them anyway, usually start in the four corners of our home. And forming a healthy eating habit that can last a long run in our life usually starts in the place where we first learn to eat; our home. It is always within the home that we learned all our firsts. Living the lifestyle that we want to have for the rest of our lives cannot be simply picked up from anywhere, the home has always been the greatest factor of this.
Although the outside world has also a big share in forming what we will be in the future, everything usually still ended up with the family and our home. That is basically the reason why the family and our home has a great role to play in having a healthy life that we can live for the years to come. The choice of the right food to eat will also be more enhanced with the choices that are offered to us at home.
And even though a lot of studies are showing how the food we eat directly affects or contributes o different health risks and conditions, taking control of our wellness and health will always begin and will always be strengthened in our home.
So it is in this light that the following steps in choosing the healthy food for our family can be well acknowledged and understood for the purpose of incorporating a healthy eating and a healthy living pattern which will eventually become a habit in the future.
1. It would help a lot if you identify all the health-related risks that your family may already be gearing or eating toward. This means that you have to check on the health history of the family members, whether they have a history of any heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, or hypertension which can all place the family members at risk if you don't know what food should be for them. Once you have an idea about all this, it would be easier to plan and prepare every meal for them.
2. When doing grocery shopping, learn to read labels on the food that you will buy. Remember that food products that contain low or no fats at all, low on sugar and salt, and low in cholesterol are the foods that are of quality. Learn also to incorporate simplistic food. These are foods in their natural and fresh form. Buying fresh veggies and fruits are the greatest way to choose the healthy foods for your family. You don't need to have them cooked and they can easily be eaten in their healthy natural form. Serving raw and fresh veggie salads or fresh cut fruits for dessert is definitely a great way to give the family members their daily needed nutrients.
3. Opt to buy the leaner cuts of meat or white meat poultry products. These are definitely less fatty and can be better sources of protein. Serving your usual ground-beef meal, for instance, with ground chicken or turkey or even veal will be healthier and at the same time giving a variety. It will also be wise to add non-animal proteins to your usual diet. These include soy products, beans, and nuts; they are low in fat and definitely much better in all ways for the body's health.
4. Choose to serve more whole grain products in your meal. You can do this by changing your white bread to whole grain one, by eating more on whole grain cereals and brown rice for dinner. It is also better to include dairy in the family's diet. This will definitely create strong and healthy bones. Low-fat or skim milk is a lot better for the body, real cheeses and definitely not those processed ones which are higher in fat content. This also means that you have to take a trip to the deli counter every time you make your grocery shopping.
5. Instead of always frying, why don't you try baking, grilling, or broiling your fave foods and spice them up for additional palatability? This can also be a fun way to make up and originally create new recipes that your family will surely enjoy. Enough of deep frying your foods. Sauté veggies and meats in a non-stick pan instead of always suing butter or cooking oil. Also, it would be wise to cut on salt.
6. Give particular attention to your sweet tooth cravings. Try to moderate and discipline it for a change. Since each one of us has a sweet tooth to pay notice to, we don't necessary to give in to unhealthy sweets, right? We can always choose fresh fruits, trail mix, granola, sorbet or even gelato which is way healthier because of the natural ingredients in them. Do not allow yourself to partake a large quantity of any sweet in just one sitting. It wouldn't hurt to just be contented with a piece or two, once in a while.
7. Finally, remember that it is not necessary to always pile your plate with the highest food you could possibly have. It is suggested that we sue a smaller plate and to properly portion the meals that are being served to us. This will teach the stomach to just take in a small amount in just one eating.
