Top 10 iTheatrics Moments of 2016

To say that 2016 has been a year is an understatement. High, lows, everything in between: Team iTheatrics has been ever grateful to continue the good work of making sure every kid gets the chance of making a musical. Take a look at the top 10 iTheatrics moments of 2016.

10. This year, we welcomed a new member to our gaggle of crazies. Jiana Odland hails from Oak Park, Illinois, and she has brought an energy and life to the office that is unmistakeable. Her smile and voice have encouraged us to keep it funny and never too too serious. This squad is greater for her presence.

9. The 2016 iTheatrics Junior Theater Academy (JTA) was a hit. And boy, are we tired! This summer, Team iTheatrics adapted 9 new shows for young performers, and each show brought its own challenges. What a blast to hang out with these awesome kiddos and these awesome titles to boot. 

8. You Can’t Stop The Beat! This year, NBC televised Hairspray Live!, a show we love and cherish with all our hearts. It was the first of the Live shows that was also a Broadway Junior Collection show, and we were thrilled to see its message of acceptance and equality for all go to every small screen in America. It’s the #JuniorEffect, ya’ll.

7. Sometimes, we get to work with legends. Every summer, the genius that is Resident iTheatrics Choreographer Steven G. Kennedy creates our fab Choreography DVDs. For Tams Witmark Library, Inc’s Young Performers' Edition: A CHORUS LINE - HIGH SCHOOL EDITION, we were graced with the mentorship of original Broadway’s Connie Wong, Ms. Baayork Lee. She not only worked with these young performers on the line but held an incredible masterclass that we have on FILM. Yeah, so, that was cool...

6. The iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival is a big ole operation. And in 2016, we announced that we were getting even bigger. At #JTF16, Team iTheatrics finally revealed that we were bringing JTF to the west coast for the first ever iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival West. So, whip out those shades... Manifest Destiny!

5. You know what’s pretty darn incredible? Those moments when you find yourself across the globe doing musicals with young people. This year, Team iTheatrics helped host the first ever INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR THEATER CELEBRATION in Newcastle, Australia, and it was a hit. The land of Oz knows how to make musicals, and we can’t wait for more!

4. Once again, we welcomed a new posse to our circle of amazing Freddie G Fellows. This group was a smash. They joined us in New York City to take master classes with Broadway’s best: Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty, Jeff Calhoun, Randy Skinner & more! We are digging on our 2016 Freddie G Fellows. 

3. Once again, Team iTheatrics had the INCREDIBLE honor of working with Turnaround Arts and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities on the White House Talent Show. That’s right! Our squad got to return to the White House with FLOTUS MICHELLE OBAMA with our amazing kiddos from Brooklyn. What a joy and honor! 

2. JTF. Need we say more? This year, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Music Theatre International’s Broadway Junior Collection with a whole lotta razzle dazzle! With performances and appearances by Pasek and Paul, Ben Platt, Ryan Redmond, Corey Cott, Cory Lingner, Andrew Keenan-Bolger & so many more, it was a FESTIVAL. And guess what, 2017′s gonna show it up. :)

1. November 2016 marked not only the birthday of our fearless leader and champion, Tim McDonald, but it also marked the 10th birthday of iTheatrics. That’s right. For 10 years, we’ve been around the block & back making musicals for young performers. For the last 10 and the next 10+ to come, we’ll keep adapting, training, and giving access—one musical at a time!

So, to 2107: Happy New Years, & let’s get going.

The one thing I looks most forward to every year is seeing this man and him saying "when are we taking our picture?" I always look forward to the weekend of JTF because it literally makes me forget how hard my life is right now.
