Streaming Brings Broadway to a Screen Near You
We love live theater. Well, we would, wouldn’t we? Live theater is the biggest part of why The Straz exists in the first place. We believe that the potential for transcendence is greatest when the audience and the performance are under the same roof. We are also realists. We know that there are countless situations that keep would-be theater-goers at home. Fortunately for theater-lovers who…

Lion I was singing Joanna from Sweeney Todd cuz I’ve been hearing the josh groban version all over tiktok and now I’m contemplating fully getting into it. Where do I start??
Tumblr media
(insert public apology for using boomer meme templates to get the point across)
would that i had finished the deranged comic sans powerpoint 101 for sweeney todd by now i would link it here but as it is it still needs a lot of work before i'm even remotely comfortable posting it hOWEVER that doesn't mean i can't still be of some assistance
(disclaimer: i am about to throw a LOT of information at you and you are by no means obligated to try and digest it all at once please instead do so at your leisure/your level of interest instead)
sweeney todd 101 cliffnotes version for people who want to get into sweeney todd by someone who is way too invested in this show
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry to anyone who doesn't like the office this is the only cold open that matters to me in this particular stage of life rn
so for those who aren't already familiar with sweeney todd (or have a passing familiarity with it either via sweeney todd related tiktok content or other similarly related content consumption) one of the first things i would recommend starting with is the 2007 tim burton film since it's a pretty good place to start (and also easily one of the best film adaptations of a musical imo). you can find it on hbo max or on youtube for 3.99 if you don't have and/or want to pay for an hbo max subsciption. (you can also 🏴‍☠️ it because capitalism sucks. remember to sail the seven seas* responsibly!)
Tumblr media
johnny depp and helena bonham carter in sweeney todd (2007) dir. tim burton
now if you're interested in other productions (and/or not particularly interested in the film) there's the 2014 half concert half staged proshot starring emma thompson as mrs. lovett and christian borle as pirelli that you can find on youtube for FREE (here is a link to act one and another link to act two AND a link to the opening on it's own because it is absolutely PHENOMINAL i genuinely can't recommend it enough).
Tumblr media
emma thompson and welsh opera singer sir byrn terfel jones in sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street in concert 2014
there is also the original 1982 proshot starring some of the original cast such as angela lansburry (unfortunately len cariou, the original sweeney does not reprise his role BUT george hearn does a phenominal job in the role). you can find this one on amazon for 3.99 to rent or it and a plethora of other musical proshots on BroadwayHD for 11.99/mo but unless you're interested in watching other musicals and plays on BroadwayHD i would suggest renting it on amazon or 🏴‍☠️ it for free if you know where to look (i honestly don't know what pirating musicals looks like outside of yt bootlegs and i am still very very new to actual bootleg trading so you'd have to ask someone else)
Tumblr media
the late dame angela lansburry and george hearn in the 1982 proshot version of sweeney todd
and finally, my personal favourite, the 2023 broadway revival. unfortunately we only have five singles that have (officially) been released (which you can find here on spotify) but we also have the official ballad of sweeney todd performace from this year's tony awards AND there IS a way to watch it if you are like me and can't afford to fly to new york and see it at the lunt-fontanne theater (just dm me for the details). this is quite possibly my favourite version of this story and if great comet wasn't already an indicator that josh groban is a great fit for broadway this DEFINITELY is imo.
Tumblr media
josh groban and annaleigh ashford in the 2023 broadway revival of sweeney todd that i am definitely very normal about
other recommendations include sideway's video essay on the music in sweeney todd, christine baranksi's version of worst pies in london (and her criminally underrated version of a little priest with kelsey grammar in a 20th anniversary concert version that i would give my left kidney to see in full), imelda staunton and michael ball's version of a little priest from a 2012 revival, patti lupone as mrs. lovett playing the tuba in the stripped down 2005 broadway revival, lin manuel miranda's sweeney todd themed hamilton parody for broadway cares featuring the funniest jonathan groff cameo i've seen in my life (and the recent ham4ham version performed by the current 2023 revival cast) and my last braincell when confronted with literally any sweeney todd related content these days.

Favorite Musicals #7: Titanic
Titanic- As stated with my first favorite, Assassins, my birthday is around the anniversaries of the Lincoln assassination and the sinking of the Titanic so these two events hold a deep rooted fascination for me.  When I learned there was going to be a musical for the Titanic (at about the same time there was a movie coming out,) my teenage heart was a pounding. While I appreciated the movie for what it did, I felt it missed the goal of actually being about the Titanic in a way the musical nailed.
Photos: Playbills from the original run. Not from my collection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I assume I saw a clip of the show on Rosie or something, most likely the “Godspeed Titanic” bit from the opening, and from there it wasn’t a stretch for me to get the recording quickly.  I loved the score immediately, but knew I wasn’t going to get a chance to see it. The budget was massive for a Broadway show and success was simply not in the cards. It wasn’t going to be around long enough for me to get to see it.
Overtime I realized it wasn’t going to be something anyone around me was going to do. It would be a massive undertaking for any local organization primarily because so many people try to adhere more strictly to what Broadway did. Replicating that experience is usually the first decade of a musical’s post professional life, and after the decade mark it diverges some towards major revivals and still mostly towards what people remember from the Broadway or national tour (whether seen or through whatever means predated slime tutorials.)
Photo Below: From the recent UK Tour.
Tumblr media
Back to this show, my golly… the trios, the music, the harmonies, the orchestra. It sounded so full, so beautiful and the lyrics told a story. They actually told THE STORY in way that James Cameron only kind of did. I listened to it a lot, but then over time it fell out of heavy rotation.
Then a few years back there was an anniversary concert that assembled a lot of the original cast. I tried to go, but failed.
Then a few years ago I heard about the outdoor production in Georgia?...the one that cause a lot of issues. I can’t remember the details.  It came back on my radar. Then last year, the UK tour was filmed and released through a Fathom Events booking at a movie theater near me. I went. Took a day off work and went to see this musical…and I cried. Legitimate tears of joy. That production is available on BroadwayHD and I recommend it if you can afford it for a month or so. Great production. It scaled it back and was just beautifully done. The voices were excellent, and it was a meaningfully paced and situated show.
More photos from the recent UK Tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still assumed I wouldn’t get to see it live, then I heard about the City Center’s Encores Production in June. I found a way and I went. It was glorious. Sounded beautiful. I loved the way they handled the orchestra. While the production and performance aspect were minimal and not as good as I would have liked, it sounded great, and it did show me a few choices that I could mull over for the possible future. A blend of this and the UK production feels workable in one or two of my spaces…maybe.
Photos from the City Center Encores production.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The music is so majestic, impressive and beautiful. I want more people to experience and that’s my hope whenever I talk about it, maybe someone else gets inspired to try it.
There’s a future where this is something I can direct, but it’s down the road. The show is too male heavy in the current climate… but someday. It’s possible.
Favorite Song: "We'll Meet Tomorrow"...or "The Proposal/The Night Was Alive"... or...lol. sorry.

The Woodsman (2016) is a haunting stage production...
The Woodsman is a 2016 stage production created by Edward W. Hardy and James Ortiz.
I was initially worried that this would be one of those "trying painfully hard to be grimdark" productions because a trailer opened with an announcer declaring obnoxiously, "Forget what you know about Oz," but thankfully the trailer's voiceover is misleading, and the production actually feels more invested in Oz "lore" than most modern retellings. While the production does have a dark tone at times, it feels more in the vein of Return to Oz than say, the book version of Wicked. Whereas Maguire's Wicked sometimes ventured into, shall we say, grunge for the sake of grunge or even stripping away the unsettling elements of Oz to make its version of Oz more mundane, the darker elements of this production are much more, "What if we expanded on Nick Chopper's origin story and crafted a tragic love story?" I guess I'm more forgiving of "darker retellings of Oz" if they actually seem to care about Oz, and this production seems to care a lot.
What I mean is, in Maguire, Oz could kind of be any generic dystopia with a few fantasy trappings. Whereas, in this production, the fantasy elements and Baum elements are deliberately woven into the dystopic atmosphere of Munchkinland under the Witch. And it doesn't feel like "we're taking Oz and making it a dystopia," it feels like "we're trying to build off what is already there, and if it feels dark at times, that's not because we're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It's because a story of thwarted love has inherently tragic qualities to it."
Speaking of the Witch, she is a magnificently contrived puppet that moves with this loping menace and the scenes between her and Nimmie Amee are devastating, and one of the most interesting aspects of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The play is largely silent, save for an opening narration setting the scene. The justification for this is under the Witch of the East's rule, "words became dangerous." It allows for some incredibly poignant pantomime on the part of the actors. Nick has big himbo energy. He's adorable.
Tumblr media
We even see Nick's parents in this version and they are deeply endearing. The silent sequences of Nick learning to chop wood from his dad are sweet. But it's Eliza Simpson, as Nimmee, who really shines. She conveys a great deal with her eyes, learning ways to survive under the eyes of the Witch. Another interesting aspect of this production is they make her the daughter of a sorcerer, and by the end, she's found means to put her own skill in magic to work in standing up to the Witch. The production gets to play around with the "no one ever dies in Oz, except when they totally do" lack of continuity in Baum by having Nimmee breathe life into the Nick after his meat body has been lost.
And again, God, her eyes...
Tumblr media
I do have certain reservations. Like, making the catalyst for Nimmee fully coming into her own against the Witch be sparked by her romance with Nick feels... Well, it works for the production's romance angle, I suppose. I'd love to see where this version of Nimmee Amee goes from here, and I'd love to see her rebuild her life, Chopfyt-style, even if Fyter doesn't come into play in this production.
One moment I want to highlight is the first time Nick gets a limb replaced, and you see Nimmee's reaction to the tin arm and we see the tin arm wrap around her in an embrace. It's a very touching moment, and the puppetwork, done in motion with the actor's performance as he pantomimes a missing arm, is done in a really cool and heartbreaking way.
So, reservations aside, I'd still recommend it. It's a fascinating piece, and you can find it on BroadwayHD through Amazon right now, in the US, at least.
