The Woodsman (2016) is a haunting stage production...
The Woodsman is a 2016 stage production created by Edward W. Hardy and James Ortiz.
I was initially worried that this would be one of those "trying painfully hard to be grimdark" productions because a trailer opened with an announcer declaring obnoxiously, "Forget what you know about Oz," but thankfully the trailer's voiceover is misleading, and the production actually feels more invested in Oz "lore" than most modern retellings. While the production does have a dark tone at times, it feels more in the vein of Return to Oz than say, the book version of Wicked. Whereas Maguire's Wicked sometimes ventured into, shall we say, grunge for the sake of grunge or even stripping away the unsettling elements of Oz to make its version of Oz more mundane, the darker elements of this production are much more, "What if we expanded on Nick Chopper's origin story and crafted a tragic love story?" I guess I'm more forgiving of "darker retellings of Oz" if they actually seem to care about Oz, and this production seems to care a lot.
What I mean is, in Maguire, Oz could kind of be any generic dystopia with a few fantasy trappings. Whereas, in this production, the fantasy elements and Baum elements are deliberately woven into the dystopic atmosphere of Munchkinland under the Witch. And it doesn't feel like "we're taking Oz and making it a dystopia," it feels like "we're trying to build off what is already there, and if it feels dark at times, that's not because we're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It's because a story of thwarted love has inherently tragic qualities to it."
Speaking of the Witch, she is a magnificently contrived puppet that moves with this loping menace and the scenes between her and Nimmie Amee are devastating, and one of the most interesting aspects of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The play is largely silent, save for an opening narration setting the scene. The justification for this is under the Witch of the East's rule, "words became dangerous." It allows for some incredibly poignant pantomime on the part of the actors. Nick has big himbo energy. He's adorable.
Tumblr media
We even see Nick's parents in this version and they are deeply endearing. The silent sequences of Nick learning to chop wood from his dad are sweet. But it's Eliza Simpson, as Nimmee, who really shines. She conveys a great deal with her eyes, learning ways to survive under the eyes of the Witch. Another interesting aspect of this production is they make her the daughter of a sorcerer, and by the end, she's found means to put her own skill in magic to work in standing up to the Witch. The production gets to play around with the "no one ever dies in Oz, except when they totally do" lack of continuity in Baum by having Nimmee breathe life into the Nick after his meat body has been lost.
And again, God, her eyes...
Tumblr media
I do have certain reservations. Like, making the catalyst for Nimmee fully coming into her own against the Witch be sparked by her romance with Nick feels... Well, it works for the production's romance angle, I suppose. I'd love to see where this version of Nimmee Amee goes from here, and I'd love to see her rebuild her life, Chopfyt-style, even if Fyter doesn't come into play in this production.
One moment I want to highlight is the first time Nick gets a limb replaced, and you see Nimmee's reaction to the tin arm and we see the tin arm wrap around her in an embrace. It's a very touching moment, and the puppetwork, done in motion with the actor's performance as he pantomimes a missing arm, is done in a really cool and heartbreaking way.
So, reservations aside, I'd still recommend it. It's a fascinating piece, and you can find it on BroadwayHD through Amazon right now, in the US, at least.

Honestly, Ladz, I'm scared to read fealty even though I bought it. I feel like I'll become obsessed and then want something similar
I am so flattered by this; thank you so much!!
In terms of becoming obsessed and wanting more, there are minimum 7 more volumes to write (it takes a long time to stop a forever war while preserving a vestigial empire, who knew!). But in the interim of me writing them, I have a carefully curated to-read list for the different aspects of FEALTY that you like most.
NON-FICTION (also featured in the back of the book)
The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II by Svetlana Alexievich (2017)
God's Playground: A History of Poland, Volumes 1 & 2 by Normal Davies (2005)
Revolutionary Russia, 1891 - 1991: A History by Orlando Figes (2015)
Queer Gothic by George Haggerty (2006)
Rasputin: Faith, Power, and the Twilight of the Romanovs by Douglas Smith (2016)
VAMPIRES
Hellsing by Kouta Hirano (1997 - 2008)
Monogatari by nisiOisin, illustrated by Vofan (2005 - Present)
Vampire Hunter D by Hideyuki Kikuchi, illus. Yoshitaka Amano (2005 - Present in English)
A Flame in the Night by Morgan Dante (2023)
Ossuary by T.D. Cloud, illus. by Ambi Sun (2023)
Unholy with Eyes Like Wolves by Morgan Dante (April 2024)
Mistress of Lies by K.M. Enright (August 2024)
SLAVIC POLITICAL FANTASY
Tower of Fools by Andrzej Sapkowski (2020 in English)
The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid (2021)
Kalyna the Soothsayer by Elijah Kinch Spector (2022)
SLAVIC FICTION
Day of the Oprichnik by Vladimir Sorokin (2011 in English)

Titus Alone by Mervyn Peake (1959)
Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey (2001)
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth J. Dickinson (2015)
GOTHIC FICTION
tbh Mervyn Peake's books also work for this category
The Monk by Matthew G. Lewis (1796)
Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh (2022)
The Lord of Astiigos by Soren Häxan (2023); please note: there is an update coming in the next few months
The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw (2023)
BLURBER BOOKS
(if not in previous sections)
Little Death by Pom Poison (2022 - Present)
A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock (2023)
A Necessary Chaos by Brent Lambert (2023)
All Tomorrow's Photos Duology by S.S. Genesee (2023)
VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY
Bloodborne (2015), especially Castle Cainhurst
Fire Emblem Three Houses (2019), the Black Eagles house
I think this is most of it!! I have read and reviewed most of these on my blog, where you will find things like content and trigger warnings.
Hope this answers the questions and please take your time! FEALTY is a dense, gory book with a lot happening both politically and interpersonally, so don't feel bad about taking time to get into it.
It took me a few years from purchase to actually reading Mervyn Peake's work, for example, and it absolutely came at the right time for me.
I hope this answers the ask!

Is there a particular aspect/secret/theme/snippet of backstory about Vigor that you have always really liked, but have little opportunity to include in the things you write?
The good news is I have been spoiled by the most lovely mutuals who indulge my nonsense, along with exploring things I never did before making Vigor a bg3 muse. Converting him from a Skyrim OC to a bg3 companion helped me write a proper arc for him. Despite making him back in 2016, I'm only recently learning what happens when he has a support group to grow his confidence and force him out of the wilds.
But, I want to write more of him as a younger man. Not just with muses he acts genuine with, but muses he would charm and lie to. Even if in meta we all know that he hates doing it, he did have to for many years. I'd love for him to pick a target, internally scream the entire time, and get called out for it. I've plotted some cute stuff from that part of his life, giving him hope through those dark years, but I'd also love for someone to catch him during a kill, especially a shipping partner.
Also! How he is prone to entering abusive relationships because that's what happens. Not forever, of course, soon enough you've heard it all before. I want to explore the line where his desperation and loneliness are preferable to the fear of being used and owned again.
Also, also, last one I swear, I need to get better at describing his duality as an upper-class gentleman and a scruffy woodsman. Maybe a more detailed bio might help off the bat? But most of all, I think it's on me to help reinforce that throughout threads. For example, when he does something gentlemanly, I should add some description about his tired eyes or worn out clothes. In reverse, when he's harvesting or hunting, he moves with grace or proudly mentions how a certain plant is referenced in poems and art.
There's a lot I want to do as drabbles. Anything I can't find a writing partner for, I can do myself, especially exploring his strict childhood or how he managed during his time isolated in the wilderness. It would help me unpack the effects it had on him in more detail, and hopefully help plotting partners understand those years better.
tl;dr I have thoughts, lots of thoughts. Thank you so much for this question. I've had this blog for two months now, and I already feel spoiled for choice. I currently have assassin Vigor on the brain, but in truth I am still learning more about Vigor every day, and by extension, what I want to explore.

the wolf should’ve been afraid of me.
Titans 3.04
just under the wire! ... i hope.
like with the previous review, i’m typing this up as i see the episode. here we go!
spoilers ahead.
1. ... well. that was an interesting cold open.
1.25. i don’t know whether to admire this show’s restraint when it comes to gotham and its excesses, particularly arkham asylum. it’d be easy to go hammer and tongs, like suicide squad (2016) did, or any number of bat media did, at a tropey, colourful~~insanity~~ that can be quite damaging, casting mental illness in strangeness and criminality. it definitely shows gotham as... separate from the rest of the country, its own ecosystem of heroes and villains, a sort of rogue state.
but that ecosystem is still human, with its heroes needing to clip parts of themselves away just to survive, growing old and needing to be recycled, its villains languishing in the same kinds of systems that fail everybody else who needs to be helped. it’s a quieter, tenser sort of wrongness: not strange enough that you can dissociate, but not close enough that you can completely empathise. gotham is its own creature.
1.5. i know that the reasoning behind this is more doylist than anything, but i’m so glad that joker was killed off with little fanfare right at the start of the season. he is the one man in the batverse that’s transcended its confines as this sort of ethereal boogeyman/eternal edgelord and to justify his presence in the series would mean giving him this tired, overblown importance and too much of a stab at colourful, tropey “madness” in this otherwise-subdued series. i wish all batmedia would follow suit and get rid of this fucker.
1.75. so jason is bucking scarecrow’s control! or reminding him of who exactly holds all the cards right now. circling back to what i talked about in the last review, it’s remarkable just how little time it’s been since jason’s “death” and he’s already got ‘minions’ and elaborately set up plans to track, break and kill the titans. just how long has he been planning this? when did he first look at WE weapons prototypes and think that’s something i can use to blow somebody up? and the most unsettling question: did he plan his own death at the hands of the joker just so that he could break batman?
at this point it’s obvious that the scarecrow at least started jason down this path, but it’s frightening just how far he’s travelled already.
1.8. aaagh, less than one minute in! i’ll shut up.
2. conner washing his hands at the sink reminds me that he was directly in the line of explosion when hank got blown up and he’s probably got atomised hank-bits all over his skin that he’s desperately trying to wash off.
... you’re welcome.
2.25. conner, don’t you speak to gar fucking logan like that, sir, no!
2.3. if anything it’s the lex part of him that gave him the knowhow to recognise the weapon and build a de-activator for it.
anyway, for that ‘half-breed’ and ‘talking tiger’ comment?
Tumblr media
(i wish, tho, that we actually see conner more interested in the superman part of his legacy, like maybe listening to stories from gar, or even better, dick, so we get a better idea of the pressure he’s feeling to live up to that part of him and not the part that’s lex.)
((i talked about conner’s stages of moral development in his introductory episode last season, but i wonder if the next stage of his self-actualisation would be to further integrate the parts of himself and realise that they are only parts and he, conner, is an entirely different person unto himself that can make decisions on how to use what he has and what he knows. his superman abilities can be used to destroy. his lex knowledge can be used to save.))
3. oh dawn :((
3.25. is this the last we see of dawn and hank? i mean, we know donna is coming back; would it be a stretch to think they’ll try to have a go at resurrecting hank as well?
3.5. “deathstroke didn’t make us into killers.” good, because deathstroke didn’t make jason a killer either. there’s a missing step there you need to be looking for, dick.
3.75. dick did try to break the cycle, step away from gotham, run from the possibility that he could turn into batman. it didn’t help; he couldn’t fully withdraw from his vigilante persona the same time he loathed it, and batman literally haunted him both asleep and awake. but maybe gotham doesn’t have to turn anybody into anything. maybe gotham has nothing to do with it at all. it’s about taking responsibility, realising some sacrifices are pure bullshit, and building an actual family instead of merely a team.
anyway: hugs!
Tumblr media
(oh, also? mr “i hate flying”? i mean, there’s perfectly valid reasons to hate flying that’s not related to childhood trauma, but then again, this guy was literally a ‘flying grayson’ once. also also, remember that he also gets sea-sick. must’ve a lot of fun stories to tell.)
4. ooh that gar/kory confrontation was brief but cool!
listen, i have never seen a psychiatrist with that extravagant an office and SIR I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW--
4.5. kory’s so unused to reaching out for help and it’s breaking my heart that HPG likely is some kind of impostor that’s maybe causing her symptoms in the first place.
kory and dick have mostly been apart this season but it’s remarkable how their journeys have paralleled each other; kory processes her grief, isolation and existential dread into a determination to take care of this new family she has, no matter what it takes; dick does much the same, forging ahead with plans and solutions until he has no fuel left in him and spirals into a massive breakdown.
4.25. listen titans this really is a TERRIBLE continuity error. we aren’t goldfish; we can clearly remember that two minutes ago it was gar’s upper arm that was burned, not his forearm. COME ON.
“sensory deprivation tank” *SNORT*
anyway, gar is the BEST
4.5. i wonder where these visions of experimentation took place. was it on tamaran, or on earth, after she came to hunt down rachel/trigon and before she lost all her memories? is HPG a part of the scientist group that experimented on her? ... god, i hope not. i mean, i think he is, but it would be cool to have some positive therapist representation in media.
5. you’d think the van transporting a dangerous supervillain that only batman could catch would be more secure but... i’m also not entirely surprised.
5.15. i love dick gives ZERO shits about hiding himself or even ensuring scarecrow is adequately contained. just turns away after kidnapping him in BROAD DAYLIGHT and says ‘let’s go’. I LOVE THIS DUMBASS
6. lmao gar is having a really really shitty day SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A BREAK or just a goddamn story arc of his own
6.5. i’m really confused about the timeline here. so... sometime ago, kory came down to earth to hunt down trigon, yeah? at some further point down the line she and her sister were kidnapped and experimented on. THEN she somehow escapes but... loses her memory? a few months pass and then we see blackfire alive and well and free; she kills faddei, can impersonate other people, and is clearly seeking out kory. but now she’s still in the experiment facility...? what’s going on?
i’m not entirely surprised about the facility being mostly deserted. either the biggest investors in this project gave up on it and it was left to the most fanatic to carry on, or they were deliberately trying to lure kory and get her to free blackfire--expand the environs of the experiment, so to speak.
7. hopefully barbara is going to get something to do other than listen to various men give her Attitude
8. how do you terrorise a terrorist? well:
Tumblr media
i love when dick is a scary-competent motherfucker.
8.25. ooooh, the attack on crane at arkham a ploy to get crane to blackgate? nice one dick, i didn’t even think of that. but why though? to protect crane from the titans? to intercept the van to blackgate and “rescue” him? seems likely--red hood was there, except dick got to crane quicker.
9. still reeeallly unclear about the komand’r situation. was komand’r captured after s2? is this all A TRAP?? if so, why are you stepping into the only thing that can contain you, kory????
9.25. so... definite parallels between dick/jason and kory/kom here. i’m just. i’m still. really confused. i’ll shut up now.
10. this may be my favourite dick look yet:
Tumblr media
woodsman!dick in a beanie.
10.5. i unironically love how titans has made this bizarrely-devoted-to-his-moniker, toxin-spewing supervillain into a tamer version of hannibal, psychoanalysing his victims into submission. it’s of a piece with how inward looking titans is, the way all of its villains are obsessed with how our protagonists’ minds work, to the point where they would actually spend time inside of them.
there are no big plots to end the world. no apocalypses or endgames here. these villains collect the titans’ insecurities like infinity stones. the way the titans defeat them is by achieving character growth--literally winning by the power of love. literally “the real superpower is the friends we made along the way”!
10.7. anyway, i’m betting dick is used to this bullshit from crane and is humouring him in the service of getting more information. the story about the wolf? an implicit threat, not to mention dick getting to control what crane knows about him and what methods he would use to manipulate him.
am i giving dick too much credit here? i don’t think so. he’s really impressed me so far this season.
10.75. like. there’s a real unreliable narrator vibe coming off with every person that talks about bruce (much like how the various members of the titans talked about jason’s motivations) and to buy into crane’s talk about bruce being a psychopath is to fall for the same manipulation that jason fell for. dick is the only person who hasn’t really psychoanalysed bruce this season, and i think some part of his detective brain is piecing things together into a bigger picture.
11. i’m glad kory rescued kom but did she have to kill the scientist?
(i mean, yeah, probably - the less people know that kom escaped the less likely they’re going to have the fucking govt on their doorstep, but still.)
11.5. dick’s gonna come back to wayne manor, stare straight at komand’r and go, well which room would you like? because the team might as well adopt ANOTHER person, yeah?
12. oh MAN that red hood/nightwing fight was AMAZING! and he did the thing! the boomerang escrima thing! i’m so delighted!
12.5. the anger and disbelief in dick’s voice when he says you told crane EVERYTHING?! tells me that he knew exactly what he was telling crane himself.
12.75. “everything you are is because of him” - oh that reminds me of halluci!bruce from last season. i hope we see halluci!bruce again--he is so vicious but so entertaining... so much more effective at tearing dick down than crane or jason combined. goes to show that dick’s biggest enemy is own fucking head.
12.8. oh no! dick’s shot! crane is in the wind with red hood! blackfire is now with the titans! i love it!
honestly this season’s pacing is such a big step up from the last couple. gold star, show.

Stuff to watch on Halloween/October (and be like me)
I prepared a list of movies and episodes that I like to watch around/during Halloween. I don’t really watch scary movies, but I do enjoy animation and family friendly things.
Gravity Falls (2012-2016) - all episodes, my rating 10/10
The show is the story of young twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, who are sent for the summer to live with their great uncle, "Grunkle" Stan, a cranky old man who runs the Mystery Shack, a tourist attraction in the town of Gravity Falls. But Gravity Falls is more than just local color and mysterious relatives.
Over The Garden Wall (2014) - all episodes, my rating 10/10
The series follows two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg  who become lost in a strange forest called the Unknown. To find their way home, the two must travel across the seemingly supernatural forest with the occasional help of the wandering, mysterious and elderly Woodsman and Beatrice, an irritable bluebird who travels with the boys to find a woman called Adelaide, who can supposedly undo the curse on Beatrice and her family and show the half-brothers the way home.
Coraline (2009) - my rating 10/10
An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets. When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage.
What We Do In The Shadows (2014) - my rating 10/10
A documentary crew follows four vampire roommates—Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr— who share a flat in the Wellington suburb of Te Aro. All of the vampires possess supernatural powers, including levitation and the ability to transform into animals.
The Nightmare before Christmas (1993) - my rating 9/10
The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world." When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life -- he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role.
The Haunted Mansion (2003) - my rating 9/10

After work one day, he stops by the museum, where Dr. McPhee tells him that most of the exhibits are being moved to the Federal Archives at the Smithsonian Institution, being replaced with holographic information providers. Larry spends one last night with his exhibit friends.

At the Museum of Natural History, there's a new exhibit being unveiled. Larry Daley, who manages the night exhibit where the exhibits come to life because of the Tablet of Ahkmenrah, is in charge of the presentation. But when the exhibits go awry, Larry finds himself in trouble.

The most memorable scene from your fanfics that I've read is when Greg shows Wirt the secret pathway into the Unknown and Wirt's second to last braincell of It's Fine Guys bursts. I don't remember why it's so memorable.
Tumblr media
Wirt opens his eyes to find himself back in the Unknown.
He doesn't know why he's so certain it's the Unknown. He just does. The sunlight streaming through the branches is reminiscent of a photograph he once saw in an album.
"Isn't it great?" Greg asks when met with flabbergasted silence. His Halloween costume is on as well. "I found a secret way back!"
"Greg!" He hisses, because he has to get the fact that this is wrong across. He has to. "What if you'd gotten stuck here?"
For a moment he blinks at him, uncomprehending. Then Greg's mouth splits into a toothy grin he expects is meant to be reassuring. "I would've beaten the Beast again and come home!"
Wirt's shoulders hitch. They'd left the scene before the Woodsman had made up his mind. What if the Beast still was out here? Did a creature like that hold grudges? If it did, was he able to sense their presence? Darkness and maybe a little stomach acid clawed at Wirt's throat. "We need to leave."
"Don't you like it here?" Greg's lips quirk downwards in a frown. "Don't you miss it too?"
"That's besides the point, Greg," Wirt whipped around, cape flaring. It scared him how natural and missed it was, the flapping. "It's dangerous to be here. Let's go home."
(Wayward Souls, 2016)
Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun with this scene, actually! It was really fun to mix the actual trauma these kids went through with Wirt being an actual teenage drama queen lol.

The ‘Over the Garden Wall’ Comics by Pat McHale & Jim Campbell - blurrypetals review
originally posted feb. 4, 2016
Volume 1 - ★★★★★
This just made me ache for more animated tales from this world. Please animate these comics, Cartoon Network, Pat McHale, and company. Please!! I heard the actors reading the lines in my head and I could practically see the images moving before my eyes. Excellent substitute for an actual animated version, but still left me wanting more animation.
Volume 2 - ★★★★★
This is Pat McHale's/Over the Garden Wall's take on The Wind in the Willows. It's cute. Probably my least favorite of each of the issues, but still really fun.
Volume 3 - ★★★★★
It was really nice to see Beatrice's guilt truly start to surface and then bridge to the point it's at in "Lullaby in Frogland" over her plan to turn the boys over to Adelade. I see why this wasn't included in the original show, because it would have made her too obvious and suspicious too quickly but it was nice to sort of hear her lament over the situation to an unbiased ear. I love Beatrice. I just want all these comics to be animated and added to the series as like an extended edition or something. PLEASE!?
Volume 4 - ★★★★★
By far the strongest issue of the series and a haunting, fitting finale to the comic series. I loved Annie so much. It was great to see the Woodsman's descent into doubt and madness after moving and then losing his wife, making it perfectly clear why he so easily succumbs to and trusts The Beast. As I said, it's haunting, but achingly wonderful. Have I said I want these issues to be animated? BECAUSE I WANT THEM TO BE ANIMATED PLEASE!!!

A remake of this picture from 2016: https://www.deviantart.com/tomboyjessie13/art/Tom-in-the-Magic-Kingdom-Era-647725877
This was originally done as a celebratory picture for the reveal of the Original Sin Story's novel cover, but since the back cover has been released, it's now celebrating both. That and the previous drawing looks kinda off-putting, so I remade it after realizing my art got better, now Tom looks better with a more proper posture and decent art style, I also fixed up the accessories on his father's green coat. Also the mushrooms in Tom's hands are the Magic Mushrooms from this picture I did: https://www.deviantart.com/tomboyjessie13/art/Tom-makes-Heart-Potion-Sangria-767695748
They're native to Magic Kingdom Levianta for the purpose of potion brewing, it was thought to be extinct due to the Levianta Catastrophe. I know it looks like a cheesy Super Mario-esque Mushroom but it's about as magical as it can get.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyways, like the original description, I drew his OC Tom in an attire ideal to Levianta during its magic kingdom era, a kingdom that is based on the Roman Empire but with futuristic tech like TV for example, a magitek kingdom.
I used Ly Li's attire as inspiration for his ideal look, he's also wearing those removable accessories on his father's coat so it won't get damaged, he wants to preserve his father's coat. I wanted to draw his royal scientist outfit since he also works there for a short time, but I got lazy, that and we all know what the outfit looks like so it doesn't matter.
He was both a scientist and a farmer during that time but is wanted by the Senate for his crimes, you can imagine what that might be, he was also well acquainted with Adam and Eve for a short while Tom later on ran away into Held's Forest to escape from the cops and became a woodsman, and would later find Adam and Eve as well. After Adam and Eve died due to Hansel and Gretel, Tom shortly after putting the fear of God in the twins/almost killing them to the point where every incarnation fears him.
Also why he's wanted by the Magic Kingdom's government is for obvious reasons and for two noodle incidents, one was the fourth corn experiment and the other reason was Tom installing his culture and ideas to the people of Lioness... and is more or less why the map to the kingdom had to create the in-universe "Hadrian's Wall", trust me, Queen Merry-Go-Round's advisers really hated Tom for that one.
