this is one of the kids from the halloween party! they’re wearing a cartoon duck costume. 

they waved excitedly when wirt showed up at the party, so i guess they showed up at the hospital to check on him? i have to admit i’ve never noticed them lurking in the hospital scene before. good catch!

fun fact: the duck on the kid’s shirt also appears as one of the animals welcoming greg to cloud city in “babes in the wood”

I learned how to make gifs today (dangerous), and in scrutinizing scenes from OtGW to turn into little moving images, I found something I never noticed before:

Does anyone who what that weird clown or duck or whatever it is that's in the lower right corner? Now that I've seen it, it's kind of freaking me out a little bit.

why the woodsman carries the dark lantern

i sometimes see people getting confused and saying the beast needs a lantern-bearer, and that’s not the case.

the lantern is the most precious thing to the beast. it houses his soul and if the flame dies so will he. keeping that flame burning is his motivation for everything he does.

in the lore surrounding the beast, it’s known that he carries the dark lantern himself. he would not let anyone else have it if he could help it.

the reason the woodsman has the lantern is in the comics. his daughter anna went out to hunt for food at night and encountered the beast. she successfully hid herself and escaped, but her father found her cloak on the ground and assumed she’d been taken. he attacked the beast and picked up the lantern.

what could the beast do to stop him from destroying it?

he told him his daughter’s soul was inside. the woodsman would never destroy that, but he also would never leave it to the beast.

in the show, the beast does try to steal it back. he’s fine while the woodsman makes the oil he needs, but the beast’s soul is safer in his own hands.

still, by keeping the woodsman and anna apart, he might eventually gain two more edelwoods. if the woodsman won’t give the lantern back, the beast can wait for him to succumb to his despair.

@annainthewoods thanks :) I felt bad not knowing the source. When I was trying to find over the garden wall art it kept popping up as like aliexpress or something like that. I just wanted something for a luggage tag of mine. I am not fully done yet.

I found some parody over the garden wall art and out it on a traveling tag. I tool the image put it in inkscape. I don’t know who the artist is since it was random pins on WISH. Sorry Don’t hate:(I am looking. It is super cute!

it probably won’t surprise you to learn that some of the imagery in over the garden wall comes directly from antique halloween postcards. the vegetable car in particular is a well-known example of early twentieth-century halloween art.

once i was visiting a pumpkin patch and when i got on the hayride out to the fields there was a boy with his girlfriend and his little brother across from me. the little boy kept wanting to play in the straw and move around, and his big brother had to keep telling him no, you have to sit down while the tractor’s moving, but he had a hard time keeping still so his brother grabbed him and held him in his lap and they looked so cute and cozy in their big coats. then as we moved along the older brother was watching the trees go by and his girlfriend was dropping little bits of straw on his head and shoulder without him noticing-- she made eye contact with me while she was doing it and had such a cheeky smile. 

whenever i remember that it makes me think of wirt and greg and sara...

woop i am so sorry for leaving this unanswered!

the big one for me is the final words of the entire show being "the loveliest lies of all." the first time i heard that i got the sense that the audience is not meant to know whether the events of the show are actually what happened to wirt and greg.

and then we, who can see wirt's normal world and the unknown from the outside, know that the unknown is a place between reality and dreams and between life and death. but the show will never say out loud that wirt and greg almost got trapped in death forever.
