more brittany meta (season 5 return, burnout, and impostor syndrome)
To add on to my previous post about Brittany in seasons 3-4, it's very possible that when she returns to McKinley for the glee club reunion in season 5, she's experiencing impostor syndrome.
There's internalised pressure to live up to the new expectation that she's a genius and is thriving in her current environment. It's also an experience that isn't unique to just Brittany; Rachel and Mercedes are also trying to prove that they've 'made it' and are having a meaningless competition to see who is the biggest success story of their graduating class. The two of them were 'big fish in a small pond' in high school, and are reverting back to that status because often adults when they return to their childhood home/environment tend to fall into old patterns.
Brittany's high school years weren't great. She spent pretty much her entire high school life being constantly belittled by peers and teachers (including so-called Good GuyTM Mr Schue) for not conforming to traditional academic standards, she had to deal with Sue, who often treated her like crap, she and Santana had to deal with prejudiced double-standards, and there is also canon evidence that she was sexually assaulted at a cheerleading camp. On top of that, she was held back, which was not a positive experience for her; statistically, holding students back in school creates more challenges than solutions.
In Brittany's case, she was away from her friends, she broke up with Santana, and she still wasn't really getting any academic support. And yet MIT believes in her and tells her she's a mathematical genius, which is an amazing opportunity but she takes it on, not necessarily because it's what she wants, but because she thinks it will be taken away from her if she doesn't get onto it fast enough.
It's also important to mention that while Brittany was travelling to and from MIT to meet with them, there were a lot of characters expressing disbelief about what she was doing. Brittany encountered a lot of what I would consider ableism from other characters (Finn, Artie, Rachel, Will). Brittany has shown to lack confidence in her abilities and her own intelligence, and internalise what other people say about her. So just like Mercedes and Rachel, when she returns, maybe there's this sense of "I need to double down on how smart I am so that these people who have belittled me won't actually think I'm a joke". It's also very telling that during Fondue for Two, she's nice to Mercedes, who's always been a good friend and treated her with kindness ("Brittany is my Troubletones homegirl", "I like Brittany") but she roasts Rachel, who's generally been condescending to her.
It's also noteworthy that Santana, in her conversations with Brittany in 100, doesn't ever belittle Brittany's intelligence, and she continually expresses her belief that Brittany is a genius. Her concern for Brittany and statement that "this isn't you" isn't born out of lack of faith in Brittany, but because Brittany appears to be genuinely miserable and creatively unfulfilled.
Also, since we're in April and April is Autism Acceptance Month, I should probably acknowledge that I'm 100% an autistic!Brittany truther. I think Brittany's demeanour in this episode is an interesting example of autistic burnout. There is real depth to Brittany S Pierce beyond surface-level that often goes unacknowledged.

A few things for you - I read you want to revise your meta on Kurt. Do you not think people are interpreting Kurt and Blaine differently than ten years ago? And your meta isn’t wrong it’s just different gens see different things. for example that Blaine isn’t that great person.
I saw an old graph on tumblr that showed pre season 6 about 90% of people on tumblr were still watching because they loved Kurt and Blaine. (Kurt more than Blaine, but still Blaine really was far ahead of every other character)
I don’t think there’s the same Blaine positivity anymore. And maybe it’s because how people view Darren?
Oh. Oh Nonny, lol.
So, a couple of things.
The revisions on the meta - first of all, it was done before tumblr showed you spelling mistakes, etc, and there are a TON of typos because I never reread them before I posted. And I'm just embarrassed by that. I mean, I call myself a writer, and the writing looks like crap.
Secondly, I also meant expand on a few things I should have -- one thing is talking about Santana vs Klaine in early Season 3. I kind of glossed over some of the context of Santana's POV and I wish I had been more thoughtful in my commentary. There are also, just, other things I could have elaborated on, or made more clear, you know?
Thirdly, Nonny, my god, Blaine-hate has been a thing since the beginning of time, and the (figuratively) funny thing about it is that every group of Blaine-haters have been saying the same damn things in ever reiteration.
Yeah - there has been a shift. There are a ton of people who just love Brittana more (why, idk, to each their own) and Klaine doesn't grab people the same way (different times I guess? I have opinions but I'll get yelled at, so I'm not going to). But the way people hate on Blaine is exactly the same as it ever was.
Also, Blaine haters can just fuck all the way right off. He's a complex character written for a cheezy, not well written TV show. I've never gotten it. I will continue to never get it. And most of the people who hate Blaine do it because they feel superior in that it seems to uplift some, weird narrative they've got going about their own favs.
Signed, an actual fact Kurt fan. (Even though I'm pretty sure I'm banned from the Kurt fandom.) <------ that was a joke.
Also, how does Darren perception figure into this? I've always felt he was more liked than Blaine? I probably don't want to know, lol.

Been rewatching Glee for the first time since season 6 aired and I have some thoughts on season 6.
1. The fat shaming is off the charts through the whole show but somehow worse this season towards Roderick and is so unnecessary. It feels like the writers got particularly mean this season (i.e. Santana’s rant to Kurt which was really 99% about Chris and his appearance). I don’t get how Glee always got so many accolades for being so progressive and supportive of people who are different when they constantly put out storylines like this.
2. I don’t get why there’s so much love for the season 6 newbies and so much disdain for the season 4 group. The season 4 newbies had issues but they grew on me and I’m forever bitter their storylines never got any real closure. I think their group brought something special to the show and I became invested in them as characters. The season 6 newbies had a few moments I enjoyed (like Jane and Mason singing Will you still love me tomorrow) but for the most part I didn’t care about them as a group or what happened to them. So many choices the writers made with them just seemed slapdashed together. I see people to this day saying the season 4 group were carbon copies of the og club and I think they had some similarities while standing well enough on their own. The season 6 group felt very underdeveloped. Like Spencer I think they wanted to have a gay kid this time that was drastically different to Kurt. But he just felt one note and often came across as a jerk with the show not bothering to give him more layers like they did with Finn or even Jake in season 4.
3. Who’s ever idea Myron was should never be able to work on any show again ever. Literally the worst decision Glee ever made worst even than the puppet episode.
4. Wtf was with all meta stuff in season 6? Sue being a Klainer and the whole elevator thing. Sue’s locker full of Klaine stuff and pictures of all the Glee kids (including videos of dream sequences o_O). Sue and Brittany pushing Klaine into Brittana’s wedding with a whole plan and everything. I know some of it was supposed to be funny but honestly it felt like Ryan and the writers were intentionally making fun of the largest fan base that had so passionately supported the show for 6 years.

It's too bad Mertina didn't get any queer meta, because Tina singing I Kissed a Girl and being a teen goth/scene kid (very much mid-to-late oughts queer culture) and Mercedes having Take Me or Leave Me and being very very touchy-feely with Brittana in Sweet Transvestite doesn't get talked about enough.
Yeah, I think the writers just didn't think anything of I Kissed a Girl even though Tina could have been such a good opportunity for even just queer subtext. I see it discussed in the fandom but because the song carries no textual significance, it's hard to do anything with it. The most I see Tina talked about in a queer sense is with one of these three pairings, in this order: Quinntina, Cohenberry, and Santina.
I personally see Mercedes as straight as an arrow but there was potential there with Brittanacedes or Jonesberry. And Quinncedes! If only the writers bothered remembering their friendship and developed it. I think there's even less to work with than with Tina, but there's always the possibility of exploring Mertina in fanon.
#sorry this took a while i know the mertina discourse has died down since#i guess it's interesting to think about whether they would have gotten more from the fandom had they had the same queer subtext#as faberry#glee asks#mertina#anon#mercedes jones#tina cohen chang

Meine "Glee"-Fics Teil 2:
On my Way to the End of the Road
Fortsetzuzng der Episode „On my Way“. Finchel, Klaine, Brittana, Tike, Wemma, Sugory, Barole, Shooter, Mr. Berrys. Angst-Fic. Gespräche über Selbstmord, Depressionen. Quinn Fabray liegt im Sterben. Doch das Leben geht für alle anderen um sie herum weitern. Nur scheint es plötzlich so viel schwerer sich etwas vorzustellen, worauf man sich in der Zukunft freuen kann.
Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)
This ain’t a Love Song

Gleeful Paintbox Project #9: dog days/new tricks
Underrated scenes/performances
A little late and this is maybe gonna be long, but here's my thoughts on why more than a woman is underrated and I love it and it's so good I don't even know where to start (just know I'm praising all couples lol).
First of all, Saturday night gleever is in my comfort episodes, not like story wise but mostly for the music, unlike the new directions, I love disco, and the music is soooo good it makes me forget all the garbage going on in this episode, and that it barely has Klaine on it...
I'm gonna talk outfit wise, dance moves, setting, mood and context, bts, vocals and ugh THE COUPLES (mostly Klaine tho, there's a lot of underrated Klaine moments here).
Gonna talk about Klaine first cause they're my boo's, outfit wise will be covered later with the rest of the couples. I love Kurt leading the dance, I'm guessing cause he's taller, either way it's perfect. I love how Kurt first appears being held by Blaine and as he extends his arm, he vocalizes that (Para-dise) 'diiiiise' and his face singing it, that little head twirl 🥺.
Them just caressing each other's hands reminds me of: 'the touch of a fingertip is as sexy as it gets' 🥺, since I can't describe steps, I'm gonna let the gifs talks, just know every single move they make I worship (like a dog at the shrine of your lies okno).
It's hard to pick a favorite moment from them here but I think I'll choose Kurt spinning Blaine and then lowering him and then PUPPY DOG EYES 🥺🥺🥺 this guy is so in love with his man I think I would diiiie, and when Blaine's down, it's just a millisecond but you can see his hand resting so comfortably in Kurt's shoulder.
Now that I thought I picked a fav moment, this two start to spin and jump around like two pretty ponies 😠, Yeah, I love Kurt jumping, he's just soooo happy, and prob this wasn't in the choreo or who knows, cause no one else did it, but it makes me think it's improvised by Blaine's look, his smile becomes bigger the minute he begins to jump, like he wants to laugh, he just thinks it's so cute, or either way it just could be him happy that he's happy 🥺🥺
BLAINE TOUCHING KURT'S SHOULDER'S AND KURT'S FACE (YOU'RE KILLING ME 😩, slay me, kill me, RIP me, I died dead), let's ignore they're really looking at the camera man when spinning lol, Kurt's just having a blast and Blaine's really feeling the music.
Now vocals, this is just made for Chris's range. I find it funny how in the YouTube comments they said Cory's struggling a little with the song this high, and Chris is just vibing using his regular voice, this man's range, I'm still astoundished.
If really the low voices are Darren and Naya, like the comments said then wow, I think it's him singing the 'my only chance for happiness, and if I loose you now...' Chris is also singing that part but higher so it's kinda like a duet right? Lol.
And ugh the chorus, MORE THAN A WOMAN TO MEEE, Chris's voice is soooo smooth, is the whole reason the song was my most listened, just the whole chorus, imagine him singing this in your ear 😍
Okay outfits, I love the 70's vibes, the colors, not a fan of Kurt's hairstyle in this, a little too s1 for my taste, apart from that they all look great, I love the guys wearing those gold necklace things, Finn and Mike's outfits are pretty similar and they're fine, but Kurt and Blaine steal the show, I love red for Blaine, makes him look more in love.
But the girls are the one who really steal the spotlight... I really can't decide which is my fav dress, Rachel is just glowing, her face looks like it's been glittered or something, purple looks so good on her and the tail, now Brittany's, that double colored dress and her necklace and hair, so pretty. Santana, ugh that light blue dress with ruffles (not really good at describing fashion sorry) I think is my second favorite dress, but I gotta say that my number 1 fav look is Tina's, pink dress, with that shoulder thingy, and in this it's easier to appreciate her hair and it looks like she has highlights so yeah, gorgeous Tina for the win, Santana second close, and Brittany and Rachel's looks are tied for me, they all look great otherwise, this is just my taste if I had to chose lol. Woo, that was just for the outfits, this is gonna be a long one, prob nobody will read lmao.
For the setting, I love the dance floor of course, the lights and obviously the fog, it makes it look more romantic, I'm not great at technical stuff but everything about this gives it such a warm relaxing vibe filled with love.
For the bts, I love how much fun everyone had on this, I love that part where it seems like Darren missed a step and he looks at Chris to see how the step goes, and the best part, filming the spinning around, it's so funny how Cory explains that viewers actually think he's looking at Lea, and it's so awkward for him to look at a camera guy this lovingly, it was really fun, and I think everyone did a great job looking like they're in love.
So context wise, despite not knowing what to do with his life, and the assignment having to be about him and his future, Finn instead turns it into a serenade for Rachel, I don't think he sings to her very often (correct me if I'm wrong), and choosing this song is so lovely (the first lines are a little inappropriate but that's not his fault lol), the rest is just so fitting for them, and I love Finn for having a dream sequence picturing all of his friends dancing around them, I only wish it wasn't a dream, but oh well it's still sweet, Rachel's little look before he starts, she looks a little shy and overwhelmed 🥺.
You can really feel the love, and I think that's just cause it's really Lea and Cory radiating real love. How they don't take their eyes from each other and both have this huge grins on their faces, and when they do have to look away they're still smiling 🥺, and the whole dance, really the whole dance, Finn just won't look anything else but Rachel, in some parts she's just feeling herself, but that's not a bad thing, I think is really sweet how Finn is making her feel pretty and loved and it shows, so he lets her be the center.
I really don't wanna discuss much how the lyrics fit them, cause it's bittersweet ('and if I loose you now I think I would die, Oh say you'll always be my baby') but let's discuss the sweet lyrics like the chorus, again about Finn's future, he's unsure about everything except for one thing: Rachel, she's more than a woman to him, she's everything and he's trying to be everything for her ('just trynna get a hold on you'). I love the part where he lowers her and when he brings her back up, ugh somebody look at me like that, I can't describe it, it's such a comfy look sorta like: I can't believe you're mine, and I'm yours, he's just admiring her as he slowly brings her back up 🥺. Rachel's little touches on Finn's shoulders 🥺.
We don't hear Finn this high very often, found it very interesting the first time, I read somewhere once they autotuned him a little, I'm not sure tho, however it was, he sounds amazing, makes him sound more beamy. Highlights: that high note in those ah ah ahhhh before the last chorus. And the ooh, ooh, ooh's.
So that's it for Finchel I think, let's move on to Tike.
Tike is underrated by themselves, the show tends to be more Finchel, Klaine and Brittana, so I loved they included them in this. I don't know if Mike or Tina sing backup on this, I couldn't hear it, but I'm not great at that lol.
Tina's dress steals the show everytime she spins, my fav part of them is when Mike spins her very fast and then lowers her (terrible at describing dance moves I know), Mike's moves when spinning, he's really having the time of his life lol. Unfortunately, that's it for them, cause the camera was barely on them 😔.
So Brittana, Brittany's smile when the camera first focuses on her 🥺, that part when Brittany is holding Santana's hips and they're just like moving sideways Idk how to call it lol, that's my fav part of them in the song.
How they hold hands when the first chorus starts 🥺. I've seen some opinions that either Brittany or Heather's not really good at portraying emotion, but in this, really, her eyes make hearts all the time, for me this is the time when she looked at Santana the most lovingly. Someone pointed at YouTube (I didn't noticed it at first but it's cute to share) that when the second chorus starts, everyone is letting go their partner for the step, but Brittany is still holding onto Santana's hips, the YouTube section of this was full of Brittana, and they're right when they pointed out they're really radiating chemistry here, so underrated performance for Brittana fans also. Can't stop staring at Britt's hair 😳😍 srsly omg, so dance and vibe wise Brittany wins here, but let's talk about Naya's vocals omg. That oh uh wow uh 🤯,for being my most listened song on Spotify last year, I'm finding out new things each time, thanks to YouTube again, did anyone else knew Naya is the one singing the lower voice of "you're more than a woman to me" 😳? I was shocked. So if it's Chris and Naya singing those lines together, well that's an interesting mix, I wish they sang together more often (do they have a song together? Remind me please).
Vocals in general, kudos to whoever did those ah ah ah ah's after the choruses. Also kudos to the band, specially the violin's omg.
Despite being the same coreography for everyone, you can really see how each couple makes them their own, like when the one's leading first spins their partner and then lowers them, Kurt does it more slowly than Mike. Don't know if this was a choice or part of the choreo but love how each couple reflects their personality through the dance moves, it still shocks me only two people did every single choreo so thank you Zack and Brooke.
It was fun looking and overanalyzing the other couples, cause I'm usually just staring at Klaine lol, but thanks to this, I found out new things to love about this performance.
I just think this performance as a whole could give world fandom peace, all the couples look happy and lovely, the vibes are so chill and romantic, if we forget for a minute about their mistakes or whatever, either you hate or love some couple, I think this has something for everyone to enjoy, you can't deny they all look very much in love and everyone did an amazing job and this is so underrated, total serotonin boost, I close my case.
I got the gifs from angelhummel so thanks <3

Why Glee is the worst show to ship things for
I feel as though none of the ships were meant to be endgame.
Which is no reflection of taste or ship quality, just what it feels like Glee the show was trying to be. So, when so much of the fandom became invested in relationships that the show seems to want to end, drama was inevitable.
So let’s talk about why I think this, and what changed.
Let’s start at the very beginning
It’s never not going to interest me how much Glee changed from 1A. Glee was originally about the relationship of Will Schuester and Emma Pillsbury, and the kids were a mere supporting cast whose lives ended up paralleling Will’s in some respects, leading to thematic fun and character development. Of course, we also have Will ending up with his high school sweetheart, just as any ships on the show would be. That, er, went well.
Then the show ended up shifting gears, and bringing the students to the main roles, and thus their relationships became more prominent. After season 1, the show was renewed for two more seasons, bringing us to the end of S3 and graduation.
Now, some of this is speculation, but it feels reasonable. Graduation would be the natural finale for the show. I can’t recall if everyone’s ages were confirmed in the first season at any stage, though with Glee timelines, it’s easy to imagine a universe where season 2 ended up being the graduation - instead, season two feels a lot like treading water, bringing us through to the season that follows up on Shelby and Beth, the season where the singing competition carries more narrative weight again, more focus on paralleling the lives of the adults and kids... Season 3 follows on from season 1, in the way you’d expect an ending to. And Ryan Murphy has said that he’s thought of final scenes well before writing seasons at other points, so it’s very easy to conclude that the ending of season 3 was planned almost as soon as Glee got renewed, and just shuffled forwards.
And the S3 finale really does feel like an ending. But before we get to that, let’s talk Funny Girl.
Funny Girl is obviously a big deal in-universe, to Rachel and to Murphy both. It’s the show Rachel dreams of, and that embodies her first big performance in the show. And, to spoil the musical, the final scene is the main character Fanny Brice ending a relationship, standing alone in the middle of the stage, and singing a hopeful solo re-establishing who she is.
And then we come to season 3. Finn breaks up with Rachel, and Rachel closes out the season with a solo - yeah, the parallels feel deliberate. It’s an unmistakeable ending - one could ask if the episode would have gone like this if Glee hadn’t been renewed for season 4, and... honestly, I think so? I don’t see any world in which they wouldn’t go for that ‘Rachel solo’ ending because the parallels are so very clearly there. Some things are left unresolved, but they’re more left open than left dangling. It’s graduation. The future’s unknown, and it ends on bittersweet, on Rachel alone in a city to start the next chapter of her life.
But let’s look at everything that happens. Kurt and Blaine are in different years, straining their relationship now Kurt’s graduating. Brittany’s held back, so she and Santana suffer the same. Quinn and Puck explicitly get a goodbye. And then the ‘main couple’ of the kids split up.
The end.
The First Time
Would all this have happened in the same way if it had been the end? It feels likely for Finnchel, and Quinn and Puck likely weren’t going to the same place. That leaves Brittana and Klaine, and depending on if the writers had chosen Blaine’s year, that’s arguable - certainly though, the show seems open to it.
Because Glee’s about growing up, and part of that is acknowledging that the things you had in your youth won’t always be like that. Season 3 plays up this theme hard, talks about how they’ll lose contact as they grow up, so romantic relationships getting the same treatment makes perfect sense.
So let’s talk about first times. Every teen drama does this, whether talking about first kisses, or first time having The Sex. So when Glee does it... it says that it’s bs. Kurt’s first kiss is with Karofsky, Beiste’s is with Will, Santana and Brittany’s is with who-knows, Quinn’s presumably would be Finn (and vice-versa). Finn’s first time having sex is with Santana, again Brittana’s are with who-knows, Quinn’s with Puck, Artie’s was with Brittany... In the episodes where the show intentionally plays up the significance of first times, they’re also the episodes that for some characters play up the fact that often your first time won’t be with who you’re with for the rest of your life. It’s temporary. It doesn’t necessarily matter.
It feels reasonable to extend this to relationships - saying that these end doesn’t invalidate their significance, it just means that things have endings. If so many of the first times did ultimately end in a very temporary relationship, if that, why would we assume the show is conveying that the other dynamics are any more built to last?
Glee is about finding yourself. The aforementioned S3 finale is a spectacular example - Roots Before Branches is something I swear I keep referring to, because it feels like such a good encapsulation of the show, on top of a well thought-out scene. “You’ve got to have roots before branches, to know who you are before you know who you want to be.”
Glee is predicated on the fact that none of us are who we were in high school. High school bullies become well-adjusted people, and couples become incompatible, whether by circumstance or personality.
What changed?
Season 5, the 100th episode anniversary, Quinn ends up with Puck.
But wait, let’s rewind. In Season 4, everyone broke up, even Finn and Rachel despite them already being broken up. Quinn wasn’t really a regular on the show anymore, but came back to, er, sleep with Santana and out-of-universe that could so easily have been her last appearance on the show. That doesn’t scream ‘Quinn/Puck was planned endgame.’
Then season 5 begins. Santana’s dating someone else, Kurt has a relationship slowly being teased, Dani and Elliott are sweet enough. The adult characters have their own love interests in bloom - Brittany is off the show, and Blaine is feeling a strain.
Viewers vanish. The mid-season finale happens. The show drops the S4 newbies almost completely and gives them an abrupt send-off, and pivots. New love interests are kicked out, and for the 100th anniversary they take pains to show Quinn and Puck getting back together.
So... why? Regardless of your opinion on the ship, whether you love it or hate it, seriously: why? These two characters are no longer on the show. What point does hooking them up serve?
The answer is, well, easy, if disappointingly pragmatic. Viewers. This is the point where they acknowledge the show is dwindling and people watched for ships, so suddenly it’s all the classic ships. Quinn and Puck get a hook-up send-off, Brittany’s back, Kurt and Blaine get focus, even Sam and Mercedes who haven’t interacted in ages get a redo. Everything that had been set up was abruptly ditched to bring back what the fans like. Cue, ships that had been left by the wayside, suddenly back in focus.
(For the record, the New York stretch of S5 is a stretch I love. I’m not really a huge fan of 5A through the 100th anniversary, but starting with Downtown I swear I just went from ‘ehhhh the final season’s half length I may as well finish’ to ‘okay next episode please.’ So this is in no way me talking down on it)
But yeah, this doesn’t feel like the plan. This feels like a course correction. The whole anniversary was a nostalgia trip, and the show totally shifted focus and adjusted how it handled the themes to allow for something it feels like they never planned to do at any point in the four and a half seasons before this.
The Compromise
To say that Glee completely changed what the show was about doesn’t feel entirely fair, of course. It feels like there’s more to it.
So, to begin with, let’s acknowledge the original ending of the show. From what I’ve heard, if not for the real life tragedy, the ending of the show would have been similar to the arc that closed out season 5 - Rachel is a huge success on Broadway, a star, but feels like nothing is quite right. She’d go back to McKinley, see Finn at the piano, and say “I’m home.”
This doesn’t tell us about the original ending for a lot of ships, but it says something about Finnchel - or at least says, the ending of the show was going to be open to them. I don’t think this implies explicit romance, the scene feels like it would lose impact if they were already together/this wasn’t at least following up an argument, but it suggests that the show would have ended on an implication that the one couple that wasn’t together after S3, were together as an ending.
So what did it take to get to this point?
I think what the later seasons tried to establish is that the characters became who they would always be - they reached that rough level of stability, and turned out to still be compatible. Late-show Britt isn’t exactly the same as S1 Britt, ditto Santana, but they still complemented one another. S1 Rachel definitely isn’t the same as S6 Rachel. S6 Kurt is way more grounded and aware and confident than S1 Kurt, just as Blaine’s learned to come to terms with what he wants, and how they interact is fundamentally different to how they did in S2, but they still found enough ground for a relationship.
And I don’t think it’s coincidence that the attempt to have the goodbye to Quinn’s character being to pair her with Puck necessitated regressing her to her early season characterisation; this is the Quinn who pairs better with Puck.
And the break-ups feel vital to this - they allow the characters to develop by themselves, in order to end up in a position where they can see if they still click. But, notably, Glee isn’t one of those shows that pairs off everyone - Brittana and Klaine end up married because if they didn’t, it feels like the fandom would have rioted. But everyone else? Sam is dating unknown people, Mercedes has no known partner, Mike is unknown, Tina and Artie are implied to be considering something but it comes years after the rest of the series, there’s no focus on the supporting cast of S6... Sam and Rachel was the dynamic built up lightly in S5 and then explicitly in S6, but then that’s over with for someone Rachel had barely spent any time with on-screen and especially not recently...
Glee seems like it wants to pair up the minimal number of people. It tries to justify the relationships happening when they’re adults, not when they’re at high school, and the break-up disconnects feel vital to this.
But ultimately, Glee seemed more than content with ending on no relationships established as endgame or long-term. What we ended up getting, feels much more like a concession than the plan.
Which, honestly, with how huge shipping is in Glee fandom, is it any wonder that there was so much unhappiness?
For the record, I disagree with the idea that shipping something means you want it to be canon. There are a lot of ships, which function in a lot of different ways, and that would be a huge tangent. But at the very least, most of the time you want a ship to feel like it matters more, like it’s not just a stepping stone.
Instead, it feels like Glee intended to be more like one of those coming of age dramas - you likely know the sort, a lead dates half a dozen people over the story’s run and none of them are intended to be ‘true love,’ they’re just relationships that happen but don’t last. Look at the early seasons - Puck and Rachel got an episode in 1A dedicated to them, written well before fandom had gotten involved. They weren’t an endgame ship, they were “Teenagers happen to date sometimes.” That’s what Glee seems like it was originally meant to be.
I might be completely wrong, of course, but that’s the vibe I get. So, yep, as the title says, Glee is a terrible show to watch and ship things for.

it’s kind of ridiculous that two of the most pivotal moments of 6x08 - abuela reconciling with santana and finally accepting her, as well as kurt and blaine getting married - were both engineered by sue sylvester. i’m not sure if this is unpopular or not, but in my opinion, sue’s involvement takes away most of the gravitas and emotional impact of what could've been two of glee’s most important scenes.
despite being a huge klaine shipper, i felt no happiness when they decided to get married because the decision wasn’t entirely theirs. don’t get me wrong, i don’t think they were forced or manipulated into it, and i know they wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t want to, but it’s still not a decision that they came to on their own. it wasn’t their moment and they didn’t get to own it. we didn’t even fucking see how or why kurt said yes!! i was insanely let down by the way that it went down and i would've been more satisfied if they’d told sue to fuck off and chosen not to get married in the ep. i hate just about everything to do with klaine in 6x08, but sue being the one to tell them to get married was the cherry on the top of the disappointment cake.
and the abuela storyline...god that one is even worse. i would've been fine with the ending of 6x06, because it showed brittana standing together as partners and proving to abuela that their love is stronger than her bigotry. it showed santana finally standing up to abuela and showing her that she was the strong latina woman that she was always meant to be. imo, it was the perfect representation for queer kids whose families have not and will not ever accept them, and i think it helped a lot of people who were in this situation.
however...glee wanted to go for those big, happy endings. and even though it wouldn’t be my first choice, i can’t begrudge them for wanting to give santana her abuela back in her final episode bc really, how often do queer girls get to have that happy fairytale ending? i don’t blame glee for bringing abuela back even if it wasn’t the most realistic thing to happen.
what really bothers me is how they chose to go about it. abuela didn’t come to the wedding on her own. it wasn’t santana and brittany’s powerful speech that compelled her to come. it wasn’t another family member, like santana’s mother or father, who convinced her to put aside her prejudice and come reunite with her granddaughter. no, it was fucking sue sylvester.
it was sue, the woman who made santana’s life hell, who made her come though her BS reverse psychology. sue, who santana hated and didn’t even want at her wedding, was able to convince alma to come in five minutes when santana herself couldn’t do so in three years. what kind of message does that send? if they wanted to do a reconciliation storyline, why didn’t they allow santana, her family, or brittany to be the one to push down those walls and bring her abuela back to her?
why did so much of this episode have to center around sue when she shouldn’t even have been at that wedding? why weren’t we allowed to see kurt, blaine, santana, and brittany own their narratives in the episode where they committed to spend their lives with each other? it’s funny how the purpose of this double wedding was to push ‘gay marriage good!! go LGBT 🤪’ yet it removed the agency of so many of its queer characters in the span of 43 minutes in order to allow a character (that no one cared about past the first half of season one) to take the spotlight away from them.
#y'all know i hate EVERYTHING about 6x08 but sue's involvement is just the absolute worst#glee meta#klaine#brittana#kurt hummel#santana lopez#blaine anderson#brittany s pierce#brittany pierce#anti sue sylvester#my nonsense

a thought
Hi yes I want to talk about something.
I spend like... an awful lot of time thinking about Brittana hugs. Specifically this one from 'Sexy'
I'm not entirely sure what it is about it but somehow this feels more authentically affectionate than even most of their kisses do (like I love their kisses don't get me wrong) but like... I think it has something to do with the build up.
this is a little long so bear with me!
Santana has just had what is probably, up to that point, the most emotionally vulnerable moment of her life (Landslide) - she spends pretty much the entire song staring at Britt and then afterwards we get this and it's just... The way that she's already reaching out before Britt even stands up
Like she just gravitates straight towards Britt because in the end that will always be Santana's person and so even though she's scared and everyone is watching she just throws her arms around her and draws Brittany impossibly close -
- and they just fit. Somehow, to me, it manages to feel like a declaration and an apology and a cry for approval and comfort all at once.
I think maybe the way that they hide Santana's face and have all you can really see of her be a clenched fist has something to do with it too. She's turned away from the rest of the club and hidden from the audience so she just seems so timid - which is so unlike what people are used to from her - and she just loses herself in Britt and tries not to think about what could happen when she lets go. (And even when she does turn round she keeps their faces close together.) Yes, they’re in public, probably as public as they’ve ever been but this still feels private and safe and gentle I guess - because you have to imagine what Santana’s face is doing. Is she whispering something? Is she still full on crying? Or does she just bury her face in Brittany’s shoulder and try to steady herself for what comes next?
This hug is Vulnerable and Intimate and everything that Santana tries so hard not to seem and Britt just smiles into it because this is progress and this is love and really that's all she ever wanted from Santana.
I've never made a post like this before but it was nagging at my brain and wouldn't let me sleep until I made it so feel free to add your own thoughts!

brittany s pierce is autistic
around a year ago, i made this post about santana lopez and why i (as a neurodivergent person) view her as having adhd (among other things which i've mentioned elsewhere and plan on writing more meta about), and i think it's finally time to talk about brittany s pierce, my autistic queen, and why i view her as autistic.
firstly, i want to acknowledge that i'm not the first person to headcanon brittany as autistic. i'm nowhere near the first person to write a post about it. in fact, sue sylvester calls brittana "autistically feisty", which i think is the closest we've got to an actually autistic canon confirmation. i'd suggest reading these posts by smolbrittana and sopheadraws among others. brittany has also been written as autistic in fanfiction (the road to unicorn and there's something about santana are two of my personal favourites in terms of writing brittany as autistic in an authentic way that doesn't feel like autistic media portrayed by neurotypical people).
as i've said in other posts, i'm autistic myself and also have a background in adolescent psychology. i do not endorse diagnosing real people with anything; brittany s pierce is a fictional character and displays a lot of traits that resonate with me as an autistic person hence why i am making this post. i'm also aware that some of these things were written to be throwaway lines or comic effect but viewing them as that and viewing them through an autistic lens does not have to be mutually exclusive. also, i use identity-first language, which is generally preferred among actually autistic folks.
(trigger warning for discussion of sexual assault, as well as mention of school shooting)
sidenote but i also believe brittany to have a specific learning disability in language in addition to being autistic which will most likely require its own post.
anyway, without further ado, let's go.
poor executive functioning - brittany struggles with basic self-care tasks such as brushing her teeth and remembering to eat breakfast. it's also worth pointing out that a lot of autistic folks struggle with brushing their teeth for sensory reasons, which could be a possibility with brittany and why her teeth were in the state they were in during 2x02. i myself did not brush my teeth regularly until i got braces (when i was 15).
difficulty coping with change - this one is pretty broad and can encompass small things, such as believing in santa claus or believing that storks bring babies in her junior year of high school, and big things, such as her feelings of hopelessness and depression when she is held back a year and santana goes off to louisville.
rigid routines - writes everything with multicoloured crayon (a different crayon for every letter). she was also very particular when the planning for her wedding was taking place; was stressed out by the idea of santana seeing her in her wedding dress and felt the need to put a lot of rituals in place to alleviate her feelings of anxiety in that situation.
difficulty comprehending figurative language - brittany tends to take things people say at face value. there are a lot of examples of her misunderstanding when other people use non-literal figures of speech (e.g. "brittany, take it away"/"take what away?"). in 3x22 mercedes wishes everyone in glee club could all stay in the room together so they wouldn't have to leave and brittany suggests using the bin for a toilet and eating joe.
unusual eating habits - brittany has pica (consuming non-food items); canonically she has eaten the snowflakes at sadie hawkins, kleenex, sand in her master cleanse and the soil sue put in her and santana's lockers.
very particular narrow interests - brittany is an expert on cat diseases and (although the storyline bothers me for personal reasons) she is also exceptional at maths.
flat affect - often speaks in a monotone voice
tendency to come across as blunt or rude - this comes through in a lot of her interactions with tina and rachel, as well as in her speech to santana's abuela in 6x06 and her communication with guests on fondue for two.
inability to lie - often tells on herself, particularly in instances concerning sue and being pressured to spy on the glee club for her.
heightened sensory experiences - the one time when she notices blaine isn't in glee club because she can smell his hair gel. brittany is a great dancer (because the actress who played her was a professional dancer who worked with beyoncé) and is sensory-seeking in a proprioceptive way. she also enjoys the use of koosh pens and fidgets with them at times.
"unconventional" experiences with gender identity and/or gender expression and sexuality - research has shown that autistic individuals are more likely to identify as part of the lgbtq+ community, which brittany does as a bi woman. she has also experimented with androgynous gender expression (e.g. her senior prom outfit) and she ran for prom king.
masking - tends to have different personas depending on who she's with. she is more comfortable around santana and mercedes, but alters how she communicates with people depending on how they have communicated with her (or santana, who she's very protective of) in the past.
hyperfixations - when she's running kurt's (and later her own) campaign for president, a lot of her dialogue includes mentions of unicorns.
learning difficulties and poor experience in mainstream schooling - statistically, autistic children have poor school outcomes (and it's entirely the fault of the school system, not the children themselves). 60-70% of autistic people also have a learning disability. 56% of autistic youth in australia report being treated unfairly at school. when talking to rachel in 2x13, brittany explicitly says that teachers have told her that by not attending class, her grades might improve. as a result of the lack of support (which may have led to discomfort in asking for assistance), brittany was unable to graduate from high school with her peers.
naivety and/or childlike interests - brittany can be gullible at times (e.g. sue's baby cannons tactic). as smolbrittana pointed out in their post, she writes with crayon and plays with barbies at times.
difficulty understanding other people's points of view - the dissonance between her own understanding and expectations of sex versus artie's expectations for what his first sexual experience should be like.
unconventional ways of expressing emotions - brittany often uses lord tubbington to describe how she feels about a particular situation (often when she's upset about a situation involving santana); for example, she tells lord tubbington "you joined a gang" right after santana tells her over skype that her commitments to the louisville cardinals cheerleading team impede on her ability to talk to brittany over skype.
burnout - i've touched on this in other posts, but brittany's presentation in 5x12 and 5x13 read as her being exhausted and overwhelmed with feeling forced to pursue mathematics and not have any other creative outlet.
faceblindness - this is not very well-written on the show but there are some canon moments that definitely qualify.
love of animals - brittany has a close connection with her cats, lord tubbington and lady tubbington. research shows that autistic individuals prefer to interact with animals over humans and 80% of autistic children participated in pet therapy.
freeze response to trauma - brittany experienced a freeze response during the lockdown in 4x18, which is common in autistic people. this can be prolonged and can occur for minutes, even hours.
sexual trauma - this is unfortunately a case of glee making a joke out of serious topics and it's not an isolated incident. in 1x17, brittany (who at the time is a sophomore and therefore 15 or 16 years old), in an effort to state her case for why she should be ranked higher on quinn's arbitrary list of who are the most sexually promiscuous glee club members, mentioned that she has "made out" with mr kidney the janitor, who is presumably an adult as he is employed by the school* (also i want to point out that any relationship involving a school employee and a school student that is of a sexual nature is predatory regardless of age; for example, although puck is 18 when he has a sexual relationship with shelby, she is still in a position of power over him and by engaging in a romantic and later sexual relationship with him is a sexual predator). in 3x05, brittany later describes her first sexual experience as an "alien invasion" (and in fact the original dialogue for that scene revealed that she was 14 and the "alien" in question was a 19-year-old). research suggests that 30% of women have experienced sexual assault, and 2-3x as many autistic women are affected. an estimated 9 out of 10 autistic women have been victims of sexual assault. outside of her relationship with santana (who also canonically has experienced SA), brittany engages in hypersexual behaviour; she mentions having a "perfect record" and she mentions her sexual history as evidence of her popularity when persuading kurt to let her be his campaign manager. this can be interpreted as her way of coping with her traumatic experiences, and it becomes a problem when she uses sex as a way to help artie move on from tina, not realising that artie views sex differently than how she does.
(*also i want to point out that brittany's experiences with mr kidney could have also occurred much earlier than when she brought them up, which is even more unfortunate)

Why do people now hate Duets so much?
I'm going to be honest, Nonny, and say - I don't know?
I do know what you're talking about, but I haven't seen that much of it -- only a handful of people? So I don't think it's everyone. (Clearly - it still won that match.)
I think (and rightfully so) what might be turning people of is Finn's hypocritical (and continually homophobic) stance towards Kurt? And I've even mentioned it in my own meta.
It's kind of bonkers to me that there's so much pressure placed on Kurt to /not/ sing with Sam. Even when Sam does not give a flying fart. And all of this pressure is from Finn - who is just so not supportive about it. And on top of that, Burt doesn't help by reinforcing Finn's ideals that two men can't sing together because - omg what would other people think?? He's just kinder in how he phrases it.
And the whole thing is so ridiculous - especially when there are f/f duets and people don't bat an eye at it.
Finn is just a douche canon.
If there are other issues with the episode, I'm unsure. It's the beginning of the real Brittana story line, though it's also the start of Brittany and Artie. Sam and Quinn are as boring as ever. It is, oddly, one of the few times Rachel is actually thinking of people other than herself.
Personally, it's one of my favorites in Season 2. I do love the Kurt angst and I think it's a great lead in to where they're going with the story when they introduce Blaine.
If anyone has any insight for Nonny -- please feel free to share!
#that's how s.o. sees it#do i need to start tagging these meta posts with more things?#is that how tumblr works these days?

2, 10 and 17 for the ask game
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?
I’m not really into romance at all so I feel like most fandom OTPs are BroTPs for me. But some examples would be Faberry, Hevans, Quinntana, Tartie, and St. Berry. Now idk how popular any of those are but I see them a fair amount.
Honestly the only pairings I actively ship are Brittana, Tike, Kurtbastian, and Burt and Carole (idk what their ship name is). Everyone else I either don’t care about or just broship.
10. Most disliked arc? Why?
The Klaine SA arc. I hate that they did that and then not only did they not even acknowledge that it was SA. But they made KURT apologise! For what? Not going along with being assaulted??? After which they went forward like that wasn’t a big deal.
Second most disliked is the Klaine emotional abuse arc in tested. Where Blaine straight up admits for wanting Kurt to be volnurable and dependent on him. But then the show spins that into being like totally normal for queer couples. Which it isn’t??? It’s literally the definition of emotional abuse. And then the show just moves on from that like it was nothing.
Really all the abuse stuff. Like every time they’d have someone do something abusive and then just not acknowledge that it was abuse and move on like it’s normal. Which happened way too much. And which was even worse with Klaine because they kept spinning it like that’s just how queer relationships are.
17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…
I have a lot of answers to this. I mean the main one is that I would have made Klaine break up forever, at any point really, and just made Kurt either end up happy and strong on his own or get an actual healthy relationship.
But, for the purposes of not just talking about how much I hate Klaine all the time, another thing that I would have done is change the season 4 Warblers arc.
It just doesn’t make sense to me at all why they’d do drugs and risk getting disqualified, getting suspended, getting their reputation tarnished, and, for those in sports, getting kicked off their sports teams for what? To win a competition that canonically they’ve never lost? (If I remember correctly) And they didn’t even do anything extreme or anything that needed them to do drugs, so it was completely unnecessary.
Not to mention they’d already be better than the New Directions anyway?? Cause they were shit. Which is another point, I would’ve made the New Directions actually good enough to compete with the other teams.
What I would’ve done instead of that arc depends. First off I’d make the Warblers win outright, rather than because Marley fainted. Then, if I needed the New Directions to go on in the competition, I would have either made the Warblers get disqualified for something else that’d be actually in character for them. Or I would have made just Hunter the only one doing drugs. And then I would’ve made them need to do a redo of the competition. At which point I would’ve made the New Directions actually good and had them win for real.

I was thinking some more about Glee and found family after yesterday’s post, and how well - or not - executed it was. My mind kept circling back to this scene and song in 6x06 What the World Needs Now, an episode I largely like, because this is one of those cases where the emotion of the scene doesn’t quite hit. With the proper buildup, this scene would have been so poignant and such an important piece of the found family puzzle, but as is I can’t help but feel it’s empty. So let’s use it as a case study in what Glee could have done better to make its found family theme stronger.
In the context of the episode and indeed Santana’s/Brittana’s entire storyline, this is a very specific case of the trope. Although we need to feel the family vibe of the New Directions as a whole to a degree, it’s Santana’s and, to a lesser extent, Brittany’s attachment to them that’s emphasized here. And that’s why it fails, because found family on Glee works better as a more generic, “we all love each other” thing, but when we focus on individual character’s place in this family it becomes more tangible. More tangible means we need more to buy the sentiment, to get the feeling that only does this group dynamic work but this individual/couple has a place within that dynamic.
What the World Needs Now’s declaration of love and family towards Santana and Brittany falls short because of three major failings on previous episodes’ part:
a section I’ll title “it’s all IKAG’s fault”
Brittana’s lack of established place in the group dynamic
season 6 dropping Santana’s friendships
Let’s briefly explore what I mean by these three points.
1. IKAG. as my tag for all things to do with the episode shows, is the bane of my existence and I take any and all chances to drag it. That said, I do have a reason I bring it up even now. What the World Needs Now was supposed to be a parallel moment of the New Directions reaffirming their love for and support of Santana. After having been disowned because of her sexuality three years prior, Santana’s rejected by Alma yet again in this episode. And what else to soothe that pain if not her found family reassuring her that she still has loved ones who accept her for who she is. Except, because IKAG was what it was and the whole mess handled the way it was, What the World Needs Now just doesn’t hit the way it was intended. The club blackmailed and patronized her then and their was no fallout following Alma’s rejection, little to no reaction from the New Directions. We’re not going to get into all the ways in which that episode and, by extension, the characters failed Santana because that’s for the very last Glee post I’ll ever write, but suffice to say this scene feels like it’s too little too late with season 3 in mind. Had IKAG not been the trainwreck it was and the New Directions genuinely supported Santana then, this reassurance would feel a little more, well, reassuring.
2. The Brittana of it all. I think the main issue here lies with Santana’s place, or in a way lack thereof within the group and reasons 1 and 3 are more important issues, but number 2 also applies. The performance is to reassure Santana but her entire season 6 storyline is the wedding and this scene in particular is about the New Directions fully supporting her marriage to Brittany. Where the issue is here is that Brittana were rarely any sort of acknowledged part of the group dynamic. I don’t think they needed to be on a Finchel level where at times it felt like the whole of ND revolved around them, no. Frankly, Finchel didn’t need that either. But I just mean that there could have been some indication that other characters dig them as a couple before this episode to make the support of the wedding feel more genuine. I don’t mean that chs should all be Brittana shippers, absolutely not. I mean that, at the very least, characters like Mercedes and Quinn could have had one-off lines about their friends’ relationship. Quinn isn’t even here as Dianna Agron peaced out after she got to sing Carole King (good for her) but Mercedes is, and so are others who had good relationships with both Brittany and Santana. Characters like Artie, with his history with Brittana, being supportive and contributing is nice but it doesn’t quite feel earned to have the whole club stand up for their love now, years and years later. Like I said though, this is the least important issue and the scene could have still worked if the other two points didn’t stand.
3. Finally, most damningly, the thing that makes me think this scene is just okay instead of breathtaking is the way in which season 6 approaches Santana’s friendships. It’s one thing that the club never seemed to care about Brittana and we’ll even say the atrocities of IKAG are between Flopson and god, but it just leaves a bitter taste that this scene is supposedly about how much these people love Santana when she doesn’t have a single meaningful scene with them all season. As I’ve stated before, post-outing Santana’s storyline rested on two pillars: questions about her career and future, and developing friendships with others. How well that was done is a question for another day, but seasons 4 and 5 undoubtedly had moments, at least, with characters like Quinn, Mercedes, Kurt, and Rachel. The latter two especially as Kurtcheltana shenanigans ensued in New York. Santana herself barged in when moving to New York, proudly proclaiming that Rachel and Kurt were her family. And look, I love this girly but I think that use of the word ‘family’ was a little premature and extra. It was, however, earned even by the end of season 4. They end of such a wholesome note in 5x19 but 5x20 was what it was and come season 6, questions of both Santana’s career and her friend circle/found family have been dropped. It’s like Glee didn’t know how to do both Brittana and a conclusion to what’s been building for Santana for two seasons. And in that context, it simply doesn’t feel rewarding to have these characters say rather generic lines in support of Santana, not when it feels like their friendships have been quietly forgotten about.
The real shame of this is that all of this isn’t on What the World Needs Now the episode. The 45-miuntes could happen as is but if the buildup was better we’d have a much more poignant scene. And sure, the scene itself could be better too but it’s mostly that journey there that leaves things to be desired. I still like it just fine, but do I think the speech and the performance are earned in the sense that they make me feel like Santana is truly getting a second family, one that accepts her? Well, not really. And this is just one example of Glee’s found family message missing the mark by continuing to make the same mistakes.
#santanalysis#sorta we'll allow it#glee#santana lopez#brittana#glee meta#what the world needs now#it just doesn't hit as hard as it should have ya know#i also think the chs say too generic lines in their speech to brittana#but that's not the main issue
