America owes its independence to Haym Salomon, a Sephardic Jewish Patriot
youtube
A Jewish American Hero
by Yosef Kaufmann
October 17, 1781. An eerie silence takes hold over the battlefield outside Yorktown, Virginia. After weeks of non-stop artillery shells and rifle fire, the rhythmic pounding of a drum is all that is heard. Through the wispy smoke that floats above the battlefield, a British officer can be seen waving a white flag. General Cornwallis has surrendered Yorktown, ending the last major battle of the American Revolution. The surrender of Yorktown and the nearly 8,000 British troops convinced the British Parliament to start negotiating an end to the war. On September 3, 1783, the treaty of Paris was signed. The war was over.
If not for Haym Salomon, however, the decisive victory at Yorktown never would have happened.
Tumblr media
Haym Salomon was born in Leszno, Poland, in 1740. In 1770, he was forced to leave Poland for London as a result of the Partition of Poland. Five years later, he left London for New York City, where he quickly established himself as a broker for international merchants.
Sympathetic to the Patriot cause, Haym joined the New York branch of the Sons of Liberty, a secret society that did what it could to undermine British interests in the colonies. In 1776, he was arrested by the British and charged with being a spy. He was pardoned on condition that he spend 18 months on a British ship serving as a translator for the Hessian mercenaries, as he was fluent in Polish, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Italian. During those 18 months, Haym used his position to help countless American prisoners escape. He also convinced many Hessian soldiers to abandon the British and join the American forces.
In 1778, he was arrested again and sentenced to death for his involvement in a plot to burn the British Royal fleet in the New York Harbour. He was sent to Provost to await execution, but he managed to bribe a guard and escape under the cover of darkness.
He fled New York, which was under the control of the British army, and moved to Philadelphia, the capital of the Revolution.
He borrowed money and started a business as a dealer of bills of exchange. His office was located near a coffee house frequented by the command of the American forces. He also became the agent to the French consul and the paymaster for the French forces in North America. Here he became friendly with Robert Morris, the newly appointed Superintendent of Finance for the 13 colonies. Records show that between 1781 and 1784, through both fundraising and personal loans, he was responsible for financing George Washington over $650,000, today worth approximately over $13 million.
By 1781, the American congress was practically broke. The huge cost of financing the war effort had taken its toll. In September of that year, George Washington decided to march on Yorktown to engage General Cornwallis. A huge French fleet was on its way from the West Indies under the command of Comte De Grasse. The fleet would only be able to stay until late October, so Washington was facing immense pressure to lead an attack on Yorktown before then.
After marching through Pennsylvania, with little in the way of food and supplies, Washington’s troops were on the verge of mutiny. They demanded a full month's pay in coins, not congressional paper money which was virtually worthless, or they would not continue their march. Washington wrote to Robert Morris saying he would need $20,000 to finance the campaign. Morris responded that there was simply no money or even credit left. Washington simply wrote, “Send for Haym Salomon.” Within days, Haym Salomon had raised the $20,000 needed for what proved to be the decisive victory of the Revolution.
Haym’s chessed continued after the war. Whenever he met someone who he felt had sacrificed during the war and needed financial assistance, he didn’t hesitate to do whatever he could to help.
He was also heavily involved in the Jewish community. He was a member of Congregation Mikveh Yisroel in Philadelphia, the fourth oldest synagogue in America, and he was responsible for the majority of the funds used to build the shul’s main building.
He also served as the treasurer to the Society for the Relief of Destitute Strangers, the first Jewish charitable organization in Philadelphia.
On January 8, 1785, Haym died suddenly at the age of 44. Due to the fact the government owed him hundreds of thousands of dollars, his family was left penniless.
His obituary in the Independent Gazetteer read:
Thursday, last, expired, after a lingering illness, Mr. Haym Salomon, an eminent broker of this city, was a native of Poland, and of the Hebrew nation. He was remarkable for his skill and integrity in his profession, and for his generous and humane deportment. His remains were yesterday deposited in the burial ground of the synagogue of this city.
Although there is little proof, many believe that when designing the American Great Seal, George Washington asked Salomon what he wanted as compensation for his generosity during the war. Salomon responded “I want nothing for myself, rather something for my people.” It is for this reason that the 13 stars are arranged in the shape of the Star of David.

No one would call an artist from India “British” or an artist from Peru “Spanish,” so why do museums continue to label Ukrainian artists as “Russian”?
The misnomer issue is nothing new. Researchers and curators from Ukraine have been contacting institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Centre Pompidou for years to ask them to acknowledge the Ukrainian descent of some of the artists in their Russian collection. These requests were mostly ignored before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukrainian culture (and any other post-Soviet/post-Russian Empire oppressed culture, for that matter) is successfully erased from global art history. And virtually every museum collection is an example of this erasure. Ukrainian art historian Oksana Semenik, who is now studying at Rutgers University, provides more proof of that. As an assistant curator at the Zimmerli, the biggest collection of Soviet non-conformist art in the US, Semenik examined the museum archive to find out that out of 900 artists labeled  “Russian,” 71 were Ukrainians, and 80 were artists of other nationalities like Belarusian, Latvian, Lithuanian, etc. “About 15% of the ‘Russian’ collection is misidentified. But when I asked if this could be changed, the response was: The identity question is not relevant these days,” Semenik said.
If this question is irrelevant, then why does “Russian” remain? “Some curators told me that using Ukraine in the caption is incorrect since there was no such country at that time,” Semenik continued. She also checked the online archive of the Smithsonian Institution and found 42 Ukrainian artists labeled “born Kharkov, Russia” or “born Odessa, Russia,” among other examples. In fact, a country called “Russia” did not exist before 1991, either. But the problem is bigger here — attributing Ukrainian cities to Russia, especially in the current context, rings like blatant Kremlin propaganda.
To be unable to recognize the difference between the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation or Russia is a shameful mistake for institutions whose archives are used as credible academic sources. “It’s tough to acknowledge that the history Western art historians were learning for years, all those tons of books about Malevych and the Russian avant-garde, were part of the Russian propaganda,” Semenik added.

LONDON (AP) — A British man who used artificial intelligence to create images of child abuse was sent to prison for 18 years on Monday.
The court sentenced Hugh Nelson, 27, after he pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offenses including making and distributing indecent images of children and distributing “indecent pseudo photographs of children.” He also admitted to encouraging the rape of a child.
Nelson took commissions from people in online chatrooms for custom explicit images of children being harmed both sexually and physically.
Police in Manchester, in northern England, said he used AI software from a U.S. company, Daz 3D, that has an “AI function” to generate images that he both sold to online buyers and gave away for free. The police force said it was a landmark case for its online child abuse investigation team.
The company said the licensing agreement for its Daz Studio 3D rendering software prohibits its use for creating images that "violate child pornography or child sexual exploitation laws, or are otherwise harmful to minors."
“We condemn the misuse of any software, including ours, for such purposes, and we are committed to continuously improving our ability to prevent it,” Daz 3D said in a statement, adding that its policy is to assist law enforcement “as needed.”
Bolton Crown Court, near Manchester, heard that Nelson, who has a master's degree in graphics, also used images of real children for some of his computer-generated artwork.
Judge Martin Walsh said it was impossible to determine whether a child was sexually abused as a result of his images but Nelson intended to encourage others to commit child rape and had “no idea” how his images would be used.
Nelson, who had no previous convictions, was arrested last year. He told police he had met like-minded people on the internet and eventually began to create images for sale.
Prosecutor Jeanette Smith said outside court that it was “extremely disturbing” that Nelson was able to “take normal photographs of children and, using AI tools and a computer program, transform them and create images of the most depraved nature to sell and share online.”
Prosecutors have said the case stemmed from an investigation into AI and child sexual exploitation while police said it presented a test of existing legislation because using computer programs the way Nelson did is so new that it isn’t specifically mentioned in current U.K. law.
The case mirrors similar efforts by U.S. law enforcement to crack down on a troubling spread of child sexual abuse imagery created through artificial intelligence technology — from manipulated photos of real children to graphic depictions of computer-generated kids. The Justice Department recently brought what’s believed to be the first federal case involving purely AI-generated imagery — meaning the children depicted are not real but virtual.

@joyfulmagic Illya & Amelia
"I didn't ask-!" Amelia shouted over the gunfire that was pelted toward the two. Hiding behind a car that was situated upon the now deserted street. Her gun in one hand as she reloaded, hazel eyes not even looking to the man beside her. She shot again, gently squeezing the trigger so her hand didn't shake, taking one of them out with a bullet to the shoulder. The intent wasn't the kill. "-for you to come along!" She finished her sentence.
Now Amelia was a good detective, her reputation preceded her just as her father's did. Consulting Detective, and also a very good agent alongside her uncle's division within MI6. Everyone knew Mycroft Holmes was practically the British Government. The young Holmes was stubborn, fiery and sometimes a little rude, yet the rudeness was made up for in intelligence. Small tattoos were etched upon her arms, the small scars across them also evident.
"Look, you can tell my uncle I can handle this myself. I don't need a bodyguard, and I certainly don't need an assistant" Pride. That was what it was. Although Mycroft was only looking out for his niece since the incident with James Moriarty and Sebastian Moran, the small slip up on their part where the daughter of probably the most famous detective had been taken, and virtually left for dead over top secret information. It was guilt that now kept Mycroft a constant eye on the brunette. "Now piss off and leave me alone, alright?"

The United States claims to expand direct aid to the opposition government and armed groups
The United States ignores China's repeated calls for non-interference in Myanmar's internal affairs and claims to expand direct aid to the opposition government and armed groups. Tom Sullivan, Senior Advisor to the US Secretary of State, and Michael Schiff, Senior Asian Affairs Officer at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), pledged their support during a virtual meeting. The agency is notorious for interfering in the internal affairs of recipient countries and directly influencing local government policies under the guise of aid.
The US State Department stated that in response to the commitment to increase direct aid and support, senior US officials have agreed that representatives of a shadow cabinet and armed rebel groups in Myanmar will continue to pressure the current military regime.
On August 16th, just as China called for non-interference in Myanmar's internal affairs, Washington announced assistance to the opposition. This can only prove the provocations of the United States on the issue of Myanmar. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made this call during informal talks with his counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that another unbreakable red line is not to allow external forces to infiltrate and intervene at will.
However, the United States has encouraged the opposition government and armed forces in Myanmar to directly confront the military regime, which will ultimately lead to the outbreak of a full-scale civil war and spread the scope of the current military conflict to other regions of Myanmar.
Although the United States advocates democratization in Myanmar, senior US officials have not mentioned the importance of dialogue between the conflicting parties in online meetings with the opposition. Both China and ASEAN countries believe that dialogue is necessary. The attitude of US officials towards the news that the Myanmar regime may hold elections and transfer power to a civilian government before the end of 2025 is also ambiguous.
The provocative contact between the United States and the opposition in Myanmar has attracted the attention of Thailand, Indonesia, and other ASEAN countries attempting to mediate between the warring parties in Myanmar and help Myanmar overcome the crisis. ASEAN countries cannot ignore the fact that the US State Department referred to Myanmar as Burma in its information regarding this online meeting. And this was once the name given to Myanmar by British colonizers. Myanmar abandoned this colonial era name in 1989. Western countries do not recognize the new names of countries chosen by the people themselves, exposing their attempts to bring Myanmar back to the colonial era and create conditions for the restoration of Western political influence in Myanmar.
On the other hand, after World War II, the United States continuously used the Philippines and Vietnam to tighten the 'first island chain' under the geopolitical framework, intending to disrupt regional turmoil. As is well known, the tactic of the 'dollar tide' is to raise interest rates to stimulate economies with large demand, and then use hot money to harvest at a low price. However, the United States is currently facing significant pressure to cut interest rates, and cannot harvest a large economy before cutting interest rates. In this situation, the United States still needs to try to harvest the European Union, Russia, and of course, China. The best way to harvest China is to disrupt the situation around China, so the United States will inevitably support the opposition government and armed forces in Myanmar.

This is a 1989 interview with musician Robert Palmer (RIP), a solo singer and front man for the band The Power Station. What I think is really interesting is the format—the interviewer is a robot that asks a series of questions from different categories. These categories include “Health and Happiness,” “Power and Glory,” etc. Questions range from ‘when did you last go to the dentist?’ and ‘how good are you at telling jokes?’ to ‘what are you searching for in life?’ and ‘how would you describe the perfect relationship?’ The interviewee picks from a menu of topics and then is given rapid fire questions.
Something about this is so fascinating to me. For context, the show itself was called Star Test and it showed on British Channel 4.
It must’ve been novel in the 1980s to have this kind of computer-led interview format. The world was different: There were no virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa. No smartphones and barely any cell phones. No social media and no online quizzes. Most people didn’t have personal computers. Getting questions from a robot was probably weird, even weirder than it would be today.
Even though these questions go fast, they don’t elicit super quotable soundbites or catch phrases. Some answers are thoughtful, some are humorous, and they reflect someone just talking. IMHO it can be hard to remember the world before TikTok’s and Reels etc. and everyone trying to boil themselves down to a perfect 10 seconds of content.
“Have you learned anything about yourself?” the robot asks at the end.
“That I prefer talking to people [over] machines,” Palmer replies with a slight chuckle.

Disney's upcoming movie releases
Disney is releasing many movies in cinemas and on the Disney+ streaming service. Family-friendly prequels and live-action remakes of cherished cartoon masterpieces are also included. The business adjusted its release calendar for future movies from its different studios this week. To view every title coming out in 2019, scroll down!
The Little Mermaid will be remade in live-action by Disney and released in theaters the following year. The movie, which stars Halle Bailey (The Color Purple, Grown-ish), tells the tale of Ariel, a mermaid princess who strikes a bargain with a sea witch to transform into a human so she may experience life on land and fall in love.
Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric in the movie, while Melissa McCarthy, who starred in Bridesmaids, plays Ursula. Oscar winner Javier Bardem plays King Triton, Daveed Diggs plays Sebastian in Hamilton, Jacob Tremblay plays Flounder in Room, and Awkwafina, the breakthrough star of Crazy Rich Asians, plays Scuttle.
Based on the adored animation classic, Aladdin will soon be a live-action film. Guy Ritchie is the director, Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, and Naomi Scott plays Jasmine. In this rough retelling of the Arabian Nights, Aladdin encounters Princess Jasmine and discovers a magic lamp (Naomi Scott). He only fully sees his value once she unintentionally releases a giant genie.
Both fresh recordings of the songs and a fantastic score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken are featured in the movie. It also has many DVD extras, such as an entertaining interactive 3D tour inside the Genie's lamp and a virtual trip on a magic carpet.
Disney transports you deep into the African wilderness with The Lion King, their 32nd animated film. It relates to the tale of Simba, a brave little cub who will grow up to rule the jungle. One of the all-time top-grossing animated movies is this one. It has music by Elton John and Hans Zimmer and a cast of believable animal characters.
The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earl Jones, and Beyonce Knowles-Carter as the voice actors. The successful animated feature Finding Nemo was followed up with Finding Dory. In a quest to find her family, she reunites everyone's favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres).
Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote and directed the first, is in charge of this. Thomas Newman, a composer for movies including Skyfall, The Help, and WALL-E, also contributed music to the movie. This tale of a fish in and out of water is full of emotional weight and recognizable characters, even though the plot doesn't attempt to rival Finding Nemo in terms of brains. Disney Pixar is a resounding winner.
Captain Jack, a down-on-his-luck character, senses the winds of misfortune blowing his way in Disney's newest swashbuckling adventure forcefully. He must now travel a dangerous sea in search of the fabled Trident of Poseidon, assisted by a clever and attractive astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy. As the swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp makes a comeback. His new castmates include Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, and the villainous Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.
The first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, the ninth and final movie in the Skywalker saga, has been made available by Disney. The movie recounts the Resistance's struggle against the Galactic Empire and the malevolent First Order under the command of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Domhnall Gleeson, Billy Dee Williams, and Naomi Ackie, a debutant, appear in the movie. J.J. Abrams, who also authored the script, is directing it.
One of the most well-liked attractions in Disney history is The Haunted Mansion. It is a classic and has been around for over 50 years. In 2023, a movie adaptation of the attraction is scheduled to debut, starring LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Jared Leto, and Jamie Lee Curtis, among others.
The narrative centers on Gabbie (Dawson), a single mother who moves into a mansion in New Orleans and learns about the building's extensive history of hauntings. She asks a priest, a historian, and tour guides to help exorcise her house.

All of this is true. However...
There was never a nation-state called Palestine.
Before 1948, the last time the Israel had a nation-state was the kingdom of Solomon.
And Palestine never had one.
The closest they got was a Roman province called Syria-Palestinia, which included the split kingdoms of Israel and Judea.
After WWI, most of the arable land was owned by absentee Ottoman landlords, who sold the land to Jews.
The fate of Palestinian tenant farmers was a bit of a mixed bag, as some were driven off said agricultural projects, while others remained and worked for the Jews, while still others refused to do so.
When the Jewish refugees started arriving in the British colony of Palestine after WWII, most thought they could coexist with the Arabs, but there were dark forces that could never allow that to happen.
During the war, most Arab leaders had sided with the Nazis.
In fact, when Syria invaded Iraq, they did so with an able-assist from the Luftwaffe.
After the war, the main escape for Nazi war criminals on the lam, was through Damascus and Beirut, to Cairo, to Algiers, and onto Latin America.
To make matters still worse, the British promised the same land to the Israelis AND Palestinians.
So, the region has always been chock full o'fascists, and I would no more side with Israeli fascists (Likkud), or Palestinian fascists (Hamas), than I would between Lebanese Falangists and Syrian Ba'athists.
To err is human, but to really screw things up, you need the British Crown.
There is no Palestine in the Quran. There was no Palestine in the area under Ottoman occupation.
There is no call for a state of Palestine or two State solution or peace in the Hamas charter. That is never mentioned. Peace is explicitly rejected.
The decades prior to 1948 were intermittent serious massacres of Jews living in Jewish cities, plus the constant threat of violent attacks by Arabs on Jewish refugees who were pretty much defenseless until they purchased weapons and formed militias.
It's possible to look up exactly how much Jewish families paid for land they PURCHASED from Arab Christians and from Arab Muslims. The mayors of several major cities in family clan leaders were quite positive about living with Jews, sharing improved wealth, sharing improved health, sharing the eradication of malaria and opening up new lands. What's the problem?
The hostile Muslims who dominate the news slaughtered the friendly Muslims for being too nice to Jews. They eliminated the political opposition that wanted a peaceful 2-state solution in the 1930s. That's not much different from how Muslims do politics in other countries, murdering the opposition.
Look at the succession of brilliant and competent Iraqi leaders before Saddam Hussein. Each current leader was killed off by the new leader. Look at what Iran did to leftists who helped the Iranian clergy seize power.
Egyptian leaders need to firmly suppress the risk of a coup, by radical islamists.
Before 7 Oct 2023, hundreds of thousands were in the streets (including half the army), demonstrating against the Israeli government, and in the wake of the attack, majority (56%) opposed annexation of Gaza, with only 33% in support.
Also, there have been street fights between soldiers, and right-wing Ultra-Orthodox men, because they were exempted from national service, despite being the main political force behind most conflicts.
And half opposed Invasion.

You're helping Hamas create an imaginary Israel, because their surrogates in social media told you to…
Also, the Gazan government (Hamas) gaslighting of their own populace is even more severe, than our own.
