I painted this on the outside wall of the Vittoria pub on Whiteladies Rd in Bristol back in 2008 when I was a young whippersnapper. Sadly it has been painted over since then, some people are such Philistines and don't understand the deeper meaning and cultural identity of mass produced advertising ephemera from a bygone golden age or some other bollocks, but hey, I got paid so it's theirs to do with whatever they want, as long as they don't paint a Hipster moustache on the horse or a big massive hairy veiny winky and nuts in the corner. A little restoration work done on some work I did 18 to 20 years ago. It's actually been enhanced significantly. I painted in a Victorian style border, colour washing the background, highlighting the illustration then going over the text in certain areas. Had a lot of fun coming up with the copy and painting this up. This picture is only 2/3 of the overall sign and it was an awful lot of text so I had to keep the fonts simple for ease of reading. The background has been colour washed to give it some depth and character, painted black first then three coats of green acrylic paint with glaze painted over the top and broken with a natural sponge then softened with a badger hair brush, a very similar process to creating marbled effects.
