So yesterday I intended to get this up on Instagram but one thing led to another and here I am. #FlashbackFriday: Happy “Flashback Friday”!! Curious as to why I wasn’t on social media too much this week?! I was enjoying my fall family vacation in Freeport, ME!! This vacation was certainly well needed!! This time, I got to check out some cool new (and old) places within our Maine travels including our usual stop to Land’s End Gift Shop in Bailey Island, ME, checked out Marshall’s Point Lighthouse and Museum for the first time (location for a scene in the film, “Forest Gump”!!), stopped at a public boat landing at Newagen, ME, and ate lunch at the beautiful Shaw’s Fish and Lobster Wharf in Bristol, ME, the location where the film, “Message in A Bottle”, was filmed, among many other locations!! And.. I actually welcomed in Fall in Maine and at Hogback Mountain in Vermont to view the fall foliage!! Maine is beautiful year round, even the fall!! So I took a little tour around to see where I might do an evening scene but I think it’s still pretty cold or chilly when the breeze comes through in the evening. So I haven’t found exactly what I want yet in a protected spot. Docks are still beached. Also I just found out I’m getting my vaccine on Wednesday Yeah 😁 and Thursday is supposed to rain so I’m going out on Tuesday 6:15-ish pm eastern time if the weather holds. So today it’s raining but I put in a few more rocks, leveled up ( I think) the horizon line and finished up the dawn scene I did yesterday. I realized that plein air painting is a little (just a tad) dependent on the weather and that most of you don’t literally get up at the crack of dawn. So the next one I’m going to do will be a dusk scene. A little more viewer friendly. I will try and make the timing work for you although I can’t do anything about wind wave or weather (www). Doing seascapes live is always going to be tricky and I will be exploring the location over the weekend. I’m going to set it up so that you join me in the middle again since preliminary work is just that and IG is only 1 hour long. And I’m going to just turn it on and let it rip and see how it goes again. Sunsets about 7 pm Eastern by next Wednesday or Thursday. So I’ll probably be set up 1-2 hours earlier and turn it on about 6:15 ish. Like I said Plein air painting you can’t be too regular about because it just doesn’t work well on a schedule. So you just have to keep your eyes peeled I’ll try to remind everybody earlier in the day as to my estimated time and plans. At any rate the Dawn Scene is “Muscongus at Dawn”, 12x32 oil on linen. I went out today to see my site at the approximate time that I wanted to paint it. I picked out a site on Muscongus bay with a couple of islands and an oblique angle to the light so that I would have a little more time to paint the morning light scene. It’s amazing how different the weather is this week from last. So I will video tape the session. I probably won’t talk much while I’m painting because I’m right in amongst somebody’s home and I don’t wanna wake them up at 4 AM. So situation normal. Having trouble posting the IG TV and/or much of anything so let’s see if this works. At any rate I did a video of all the different ways to look at the beach on my big screen page. And put it to music the password is Moonset. This morning was bitter cold and still breezy At pre-dawn I figured it would be too bitter at 18 degrees and -3 windchill and no ability to set up an easel in the lee of land makes it pretty cool, even though the scene was perfect and the tide was right. On the other extreme is the beauty. So I thought I would do an abbreviated look at how I decided what to paint on my Live this morning. 6 mins long. What I choose has a lot to do with light and atmosphere. I let the scene captivate me. As I am looking about I’m waiting for an emotional trigger in color and light. Then look for contrasts and form. If A scene has all four of those areas covered I know the painting will be a winner. At any rate I put together a video on my site with all the different views I saw this morning along with some music that fit the setting. On Wednesday March 3rd for Live I will be on Pemaquid Beach. Brrrr . I will try to connect via Satellite??? I wasn’t sure if my test worked uploading on the beach so ..... I have a treat in store 🤞 either way. So here’s the thing at noon the tide rises to full tide at noon. And would be rising the whole time I’m there which could make things interesting. The sea is always sneaky that way. So I’m going to attempt something a little different. I’m going to paint when the tide would be at the lowest tide and video record what I do and then join you here live and hopefully 🤞 it will work. Let me know if you have questions. The 2nd Live “shake out cruise” session went much better. This is where I left off yesterday. This morning I edited the Live session down and it took longer than I expected. Posting on IGTV. It’s still rough but moving on. I going back out to finish the painting in a bit. - Thanks again to all who are following my live streaming in it’s beginnings. I see lots of room for improvement I’m gonna dare to be imperfect and get on with life. I’ll now be starting the tour of Maine through Art. I’m attempting a live “painting en plein air in the snow” Saturday at noon. Timing weather related. Testing out the system and getting geared up for the new year. Monique irises is a purple iris plein air floral painting. That I painted on plein air in Laroche con France while painting in the Giovanni gardens and surrounding regions. I experimented with some pallet work on the back to create the wall stone chipping effect.
