Summaries under the cut
The Doll People by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin
Annabelle Doll is 8 years old--and has been for over 100 years. Nothing much has changed in the dollhouse during that time, except for the fact that 45 years ago, Annabelle's Auntie Sarah disappeared from the dollhouse without a trace. After all this time, restless Annabelle is becoming more and more curious about her aunt's fate. And when she discovers Auntie Sarah's old diary, she becomes positively driven. Her cautious family tries to discourage her, but Annabelle won't be stopped, even though she risks Permanent Doll State, in which she could turn into a regular, nonliving doll. And when the "Real Pink Plastic" Funcraft family moves in next door, the Doll family's world is turned upside down--in more ways than one!
Ivy & Bean by Annie Barrows
The moment they saw each other, Bean and Ivy knew they wouldn't be friends. But when Bean plays a joke on her sister, Nancy, and has to hide quickly, Ivy comes to the rescue, proving that sometimes the best of friends are people never meant to like each other. Vibrant characters and lots of humor make this a charming and addictive introduction to Ivy and Bean.
Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
For youngsters of the Dutch village, the time is especially exciting. But Hans and Gretel Brinker, with their hand-carved wooden blades, can hardly expect to compete against their well-trained young friends who own costly steel skates. Raff Brinker, their father, is seriously ill, and the desperately poor family is struggling to survive. To win the race, the siblings will need a miracle — and a helping hand.
The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer
The year is A.D. 793; Jack and his sister have been kidnapped by Vikings and taken to the court of Ivar the Boneless and his terrifying half-troll wife; but things get even worse when Jack finds himself on a dangerous quest to find the magical Mimir's Well in a far-off land, with his sister's life forfeit if he fails.
A Dog's Life by Ann M. Martin
Squirrel and her brother Bone begin their lives in a toolshed behind someone's summer house. Their mother nurtures them and teaches them the many skills they will need to survive as stray dogs. But when their mother is taken from them suddenly and too soon, the puppies are forced to make their own way in the world, facing humans both gentle and brutal, busy highways, other animals, and the changing seasons. When Bone and Squirrel become separated, Squirrel must fend for herself, and in the process makes two friends who in very different ways define her fate.
The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry
Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good oldfashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one. However, it is an unquestionably ruthless act that sets in motion the transformations that lead to their salvation and to happy endings for not only the four children, but their nanny, an abandoned baby, a candy magnate, and his long-lost son too.
H.I.V.E. by Mark Walden
Otto Malpense may only be thirteen years old, but so far he has managed to run the orphanage where he lives, and he has come up with a plan clever enough to trick the most powerful man in the country. He is the perfect candidate to become the world's next supervillain.
That is why he ends up at H.I.V.E., handpicked to become a member of the incoming class. The students have been kidnapped and brought to a secluded island inside a seemingly active volcano, where the school has resided for decades. All the kids are elite; they are the most athletic, the most technically advanced, and the smartest in the country. Inside the cavernous marble rooms, floodlit hangars, and steel doors, the students are enrolled in Villainy Studies and Stealth and Evasion 101. But what Otto soon comes to realize is that this is a six-year program, and leaving is not an option.
With the help of his new friends: an athletic martial-arts expert; a world-famous, beautiful diamond thief; and a spunky computer genius -- the only other people who seem to want to leave -- can Otto achieve what has never been done before and break out of H.I.V.E.?
Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
Sent in 1910 to live with distant relatives who own a rubber plantation along the Amazon River, English orphan Maia is excited. She believes she is in for brightly colored macaws, enormous butterflies, and "curtains of sweetly scented orchids trailing from the trees." Her British classmates warn her of man-eating alligators and wild, murderous Indians. Unfortunately, no one cautions Maia about her nasty, xenophobic cousins, who douse the house in bug spray and forbid her from venturing beyond their coiffed compound. Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of more excitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious "Indian" with an inheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to a remarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth.
Babe the Sheep-Pig by Christ Grant-Bear
When Babe arrives at Hogget Farm, Mrs. Hogget’s thoughts turn to sizzling bacon and juicy pork chops—until he reveals a surprising talent for sheepherding, that is. Before long, Babe is handling Farmer Hogget’s flock better than any sheepdog ever could. Babe is so good, in fact, that the farmer enters him into the Grand Challenge Sheepdog Trials. Will it take a miracle for Babe to win?
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones

But trouble starts brewing the moment the two orphans are summoned to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Frustrated that the witches of the castle refuse to acknowledge her talents, Gwendolen conjures up a scheme that could throw whole worlds out of whack.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: MICROSOFT
MICROSOFT: The global technology giant is expected to report a profit of $1.64 in the fiscal second quarter, which represents year-over-year growth of about 8.6% from the same quarter last year when the company reported $1.51 per share.
The world’s largest software maker’s revenue is forecasts come at $40.23, up from the $36.91 billion reported the same quarter a year earlier.
“Q2 results likely highlight the durability of Microsoft‘s commercial businesses and conservatism in forward consensus expectations. After clearing tough Q2 product cycle comps and lingering COVID-19 impacts, strong secular positioning and an attractive multiple make Microsoft (MSFT) a top stock for the recovery,” said Keith Weiss, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“At 26x CY22e GAAP EPS, MSFT trades at a premium to the S&P, warranted due to MSFT‘s premium return profile. Multiple expansion will likely come from gaining comfort in the durability of commercial business gross profit dollars.”
Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive manufacturers of healthcare products, will post earnings of $1.83 per share for last quarter of 2020.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: APPLE, TESLA, FACEBOOK
APPLE: The consumer electronics giant is expected to report profit growth of more than 12% of $1.41 in the fiscal first quarter of 2021 on sales of $102.61 billion, highlighted growth of over 11% from the year-ago quarter. That growth is largely driven by a strong demand iPhone handset, Mac computers, iPad tablets and wearables in the holiday season.
“Our December quarter revenue of $108.2B is 5% above consensus, while our EPS of $1.50 is 7% above consensus. We expect demand strength to continue and our FY21 revenue and EPS estimates are both 5% above consensus,” wrote Katy Huberty, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Given positioning into the quarter is muted after the rotation out of high-quality stocks over the past several months, we expect strong follow-through post-earnings and are buyers into the print. We also raise our price target to $152, from $144, as we mark our price target to market accounting for recent peer multiple expansion.”
TESLA: The California-based electric vehicle and clean energy company is expected to report a profit of $1.04 in the fourth quarter of 2020, posting a profit for the sixth straight quarter. The manufacturer of high-performance electric vehicles’ revenue is forecast to surge about 35% to $10 billion.
“A double-fly-wheel. We believe Tesla can leverage its cost leadership in EVs to aggressively expand its user base, over time generating a higher % of revenue from recurring/high-margin services revenue. Services drive the upside. We forecast Tesla’s (TSLA) network services EBITDA as a % of total TSLA EBITDA to reach 11% by 2025, 19% by 2030 and 37% by 2040. Tesla Service revenue includes automated driving, infotainment, upgrades, supercharging, maintenance, telematics, etc.,” said Adam Jonas, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Valuation supportive vs. tech. Including Network Services, Energy & Insurance to our core auto forecasts, at $810 Tesla trades at 25x EV/EBITDA in 2025 and 5x 2025 sales. Expensive vs. auto but not vs. software/tech comps.”
FACEBOOK: The world’s largest online social network is expected to report a profit of $3.16 in the fourth quarter of 2020, which represents year-over-year growth of 23.4% from the same quarter a year ago when the company reported $2.56 cents per share.
According to the Zacks Research, the social media conglomerate’s revenue will increase of 24.7% to $26.29 billion from the year-ago, largely driven by solid ad-revenue growth amid advertiser demand during the holiday period.
“Monetization Potential: We are positive on FB‘s monetization roll-out of Instagram as well as FB’s ability to continue to innovate and improve its monetization (Canvas Ads, Dynamic Ads, video). Combined with the high and growing engagement we see monetization upside going forward,” noted Brian Nowak, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Investing from Position of Strength to Drive Faster Long-Term Growth: We are modeling 29% GAAP opex (excl. one-time items) growth in 2021, implying an incremental $15bn in opex. Our base case model implies opex per employee moderates in ’21 while FB hiring remains roughly flat on an absolute basis. We believe FB will grow EPS at a 28% CAGR (2019-2022).”

Anti-drone protest: ‘Rich man’s war, poor people’s blood’
By Minnie Bruce Pratt
The grassroots group Upstate Drone Action delivered a citizens’ war crime indictment to the chain of command at Hancock Air Force Base in Syracuse, N.Y., on Sept. 25. Seven UDA members were arrested in the action.
The group also placed a six-foot-high dollar sign dripping with “blood” at the main gate of the base to dramatize what they see as the determining factor in Pentagon/CIA warmongering: corporate greed.
Hancock AFB hosts the 174th Attack Wing of the NY National Guard, one of two Reaper drone “attack wings” in the state. Piloted from Hancock, the MQ9 Reaper drone is a satellite-directed assassin weapon flown over Afghanistan. The CIA also uses drones for secret and illegal attacks on northwest Pakistan and other majority-Islamic nations. These attacks have dislocated whole communities and killed many hundreds of people, including noncombatants. (“Living Under Drones,” Stanford University and New York University law schools)
One of the arrestees, Mark Scibilia-Carver, noted in the Sept. 26 UDA press release: “U.S. taxpayers fund this terrorism … instead of funding health, education and infrastructure here.”
Central New York state is now an international hub of drone research and development, according to Larry Brinker, director of the Syracuse-based NUAIR Alliance (Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research), comprised of more than 100 for-profit and nonprofit companies, including military-industrial heavy-hitters SRC Inc., Lockheed Martin and Saab Defense.

Martin Parr - A Mixed Collection of Work
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a minuscule selection of works by British photographer Martin Parr. Over his 40+ years of professional practice Parr has accumulated a staggering number of books under his belt. Most of his work is documentary based as he likes to focus in on communities and different tropes that different communities possess. This could be something like holiday goers in Benidorm who are sunburned from head to toe walking down the beach, covered in tattoos of St. Georges flag or their favourite footy team.  Or in other projects he delves into the world of flowers and where he sees them. Parr is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the photography/photobook world, this is helped by his ties with Magnum, THE opus of photographic collectives.
What I really wanted to talk about in relation to Parrs work was the style of photography that he is so well known for. The ‘point and shoot’ aesthetic has been around since the birth of more compact analogue cameras like the Leica M series or a bit further down the line when plastic battery powered point and shoot cameras came onto the market, like the olympus line of 35mm P.A.S cameras.
Parr has a very distinguishable style of photography that spans all across his works. Of the images I selected above they all share some similarities, the very obvious one being that food is featured on all of the pages, even though these are all from different bodies of work. But i’m looking more at the way he has composed the images shown. Most of the images have been taken very close to the subject and Parr has used a strong flash which in turn has exposed the subjects extremely well. The background is lost due to this as most of the light is being concentrated onto the subjects in the foreground but this isnt a bad thing as I can only assume that the subject is the only thing that Parr wants us as the viewers to see. Being up this close to the subject also allows for a lot of detail to be shown in the subjects. So in relation to Parrs work, food is something that can take many forms and there can be so much detail in something even as simple as mac and cheese (or whatever that is in the last image). This is something I would like to think about with my work, as obviously detail is a very important thing, but I just want to be able to create something that will jump out at the viewers face.
I wanted to look at this style of photography as I think it is very similar to the style of photography used in the Hans Brinker advertising campaigns, and that style works extremely well as it allows things to jump out at the viewer and is all in all very gripping.

Executive Insights: Account-Based Marketing (ABM) with Eric Martin of SAP Marketing
When I recently interviewed Kathleen Schaub about the changes in marketing over her long tenure as both a CMO and the lead of IDC’s CMO Advisory Practice, she commented on what had changed most for marketing professionals.  While digital clearly topped her list, it also included Account-Based Marketing (ABM) and the way we manage the Customer Experience (CX).
We have come a long way from the “one-size-fits-all” and “spray-and-pray” marketing tactics of the past. Modern marketing demands that we thoroughly understand our audience and use targeting and segmentation for optimal demand generation. We have seen a steady rise of ABM, an approach where we align demand generation efforts against a predetermined and strategic set of accounts.
The concept of one-to-one or one-to-few marketing is hardly new. We leverage ABM to focus on a specific set of accounts determined collaboratively by sales and marketing to deliver end-to-end programs at the account level with specific objectives and goals for targeted accounts.
While participating in the fall 2019 ITSMA Marketing Vision conference, I attended some informative SAP sessions discussing their innovative use of ABM. Eric Martin, Vice President of Account-based Marketing at SAP and a long-time SAP Marketing colleague and friend, led SAP’s Marketing Excellence Award-winning entry “SAP: Taking Market of One to the Next Level,” adding to past awards SAP has earned showcasing a high level of ABM leadership.
Eric highlighted very impressive results and tight alignment with sales – a key determinant of ABM success.   I recently had a chance to sit down with Eric and discuss what has transpired since last fall, and where he sees ABM and marketing at the account-level heading and more.
Q: Eric last fall you highlighted an ABM program targeted at private equity companies that not only provided impressive results but showcased creativity in using ABM in new ways. What is the update on the program and what direction has it and your team taken in the interim?
A: That was a fun case study. Since then, we have continued to creatively market to that PE firm and their portfolio of companies. As stated in the case study, the sponsorship of senior leadership at the parent firm has been key to our ability to market to all 300 of their portfolio companies as a market of one. We’ve since taken that model and started a similar ABM program with another large PE firm, and there are other “communities” where we’d like to apply ABM in order to reach a large group of potential customers, but some of that planning has been delayed by the very different kind of year we’re having in 2020 and the resulting shifts in our marketing focus.
Q: ITSMA, a leader in the formation and expansion of ABM has discussed having levels of ABM programs. How do you define those at SAP, and has this changed and evolved over time?
A: Yes, our program has evolved over the past 6 years. We have always had a heavy focus on 1:1 ABM, or what ITSMA refers to as “strategic ABM.”
In the past couple of years we’ve reduced the number of accounts in 1:1 so that we can add in 1: few ABM and touch many more accounts over the course of a year. We now have what ITSMA calls a blended model, with about 10 customers still getting 1:1 and about 5 times that number of customers getting shorter-term, opportunity-based marketing that supports decision cycles this quarter and next. As those cycles come to completion we add in new accounts in their place.
Keep in mind that I am talking about a program that covers heritage SAP sales opportunities in North America. Colleagues within SAP are doing other types of ABM, including scalable 1: Many, based on the characteristics of the market or the product areas they are supporting.
Q: Modern Marketing requires “measurements that matter” and ABM is certainly not unique. What type of measurements do you have in place and how is that supported by regular governance and reviews with stakeholders?  Have you successfully measured the return of marketing investment (ROMI) of your ABM programs?
A: We measure new pipeline created, progression of pipeline, deal velocity, and stakeholder feedback. Measurement is a continual challenge for us because of issues around attribution and timing.
If we’re supporting a deal cycle for 2 quarters, and there are plenty of other sales touches during that time and also the customer attended an SAP event that was funded by others, how much credit should we in ABM take when the deal progresses or closes? For that reason, our reviews with stakeholders are largely qualitative and customer-focused, and there is much less attention paid to metrics.
If I was managing a wider-scale 1:Few or 1:Many program I’d be much more focused on metrics and leading indicators.  We measured ROMI early on when we were piloting and building the case for ABM but have since moved away from that because the funding for ABM tactics comes from a number of sources, typically, rather than just Marketing spend.
Q: Scott Brinker revealed the “MarTech 8,000” this past spring and despite some “churn” YoY the number of MarTech solutions and vendors was up again this year.  How does MarTech support ABM, and are there classes of innovative solutions in the marketplace that people looking to leverage ABM should consider?
A: We use a variety of MarTech – some internally-developed, some external – to track customer intent and engagement.  We use marketing automation to support nurture streams.  But with our emphasis on 1:1 we tend to do a lot of bespoke activity for individual customers, and most of that activity does not rely on MarTech.
Q: Eric, we have seen unprecedented change during a COVID19 global pandemic and everything from accelerated digital transformation, physical events moving to virtual and people working from home. How has this impacted ABM and what are the key learnings from this “new reality”?
The phrase, “Man plans and God laughs” has never been more true than in 2020. Whatever plans we had in Q1 were overtaken by the new normal for sales and marketing during a time of social distancing. Our customers are making big technology bets when they buy SAP software, so our sales cycles are long and high touch.
With our customers and our sales professionals all being tethered to their home offices, we have had to move away from direct interactions at events, customer dinners and executive briefing center visits.  This has provided us with an ABM opportunity, though: we have taken that short-term ABM motion I discussed earlier and spread that to twice as many accounts.
To do so, we had to “deputize” some of our colleagues in Field Marketing and give them a crash course in ABM with a limited menu of tactics that support custom marketing but do so from a distance. Virtual roundtables, custom micro-sites, individualized videos and other tactics are now being widely used across SAP North America in order to help our Sales colleagues maintain regular, individualized touchpoints with their customers in order to safeguard 2020 revenue and pipeline. That has been our biggest change this year, and as we consider what comes after Covid-19, I believe we will maintain some of this wider use of ABM moving forward.
Eric thank you for your time today and a highly informative discussion of ABM and it is always great to see the progress that you and your team at SAP have made in this area. We look forward to hearing more in the future as ABM continues to both transform and increase in importance.
