Me: now that the contest is over i will watch the Netherlands song
Me: ok going to stream this forever so it shows up on the Most Played playlist every month and EBU has to confront their cowardice all the time
My husband: Are you crying about Eurovision again?
Me: oh he did listen to his dad i--
Me: shuT UP
--
to be clear, I am not saying that the disqualification was fair or unfair - I am inclined to think it was disproportionate, but the fact is we basically have 0 context for anything, and that's the problem, I mean I would not trust an EBU statement on the colour of the sky but they could have at least made a fucking effort
i mean if your stated position is "this is a competition between broadcasters, the actions of individual countries are irrelevant, disqualification is an extreme response and we do not use it lightly" and you allow one contestant to say in a press conference "after the contest I am eagerly looking forward to joining an organisation that is currently being condemned for genocidal actions and other assorted war crimes" then I feel like you don't also get to say "yeah this guy may or may not have done a thing so he's out, we aren't going to tell you what he did, trust us bre"
the cowardice is in not facing up to the audience. like so much this year, it was poorly done and the EBU should have to live with the consequences for a long time.
#i mean#along with all the other consequences#they really did fuck it up this year didn't they#eurovision#bringing the contest into disrepute

i won't be watching eurovision this year, i was leaning pretty heavily to not watching but BDS have officially called for a boycott.
for russia to be barred from performing since their invasion of ukraine (in the words of the contest as it would bring themselves into "disrepute"), but for a blind eye to be turned to the genocide being committed in front of our eyes is flagrantly eurocentric and upholds the dehumanisation and colonisation of the middle east that is at the heart of the tragedy currently unfolding in palestine. as with all other boycotts this is one of the easiest ways to show support for palestine. like it takes 0 effort or money or time to just not watch

Lmao the fact that you seem to know nothing about eurovision yet bitch and moan about people following it. Get off your performative activism high horse and put your money where your mouth is. You bring disrepute to the cause you stand for when you sling insults and misinformation.
anyway reblog if you’re a performative activist on a high horse looking to put your money while your mouth is while slinging insults at the GENOCIDAL AND RACIST EUROVISION SONG CONTEST WITH ITS MOSTLY MID AND FORGETTABLE PERFORMANCES THAT ARE ARTISTICALLY BEREFT AND DECONTEXTUALISED DISCOUNTED KNOCK-OFFS OF MAINSTREAM ANGLO MUSIC HAS NOT ONLY ALLOWED ISRAEL TO REMAIN A CONTESTANT BUT HAVE AN ENTRY CALLED “OCTOBER RAIN” LITERALLY CELEBRATE THE ONGOING PALESTINIAN GENOCIDE AND BANNED ALL PALESTINAIN FLAGS AND SYMBOLS.
boycott eurovision. SUPPORT AND DONATE TO PALESTINIANS!!!! you can literally scroll through TikTok if you want to watch cringe dances set to derivatives ballads and pop.
#Eurovision#esc#Eurovision song contest#I used to find it fun but you guys are just so incredibly racist and doubling down on#ESC’s support in light of its imperialism#literally it’s ‘European’ but allows Israel and Australia to compete. to ESC Europe literally just means any white colonial country that#isn’t America.

I know this has already been posted here but I wanted to share this specific shot. This is what the EBU has done to the contest. Martin Österdahl is responsible for this, not protesters or Palestinians or Malmö residents. If this is not bringing Eurovision into disrepute (which they cared so much about when they banned Russia) then I don't know what will

it's actually been leaked for some time, although — and not to sound whiny — any time i've posted it or just talked about it i've gotten 10+ anonymous messages telling me i'm the devil and ruining the establishment of taskmaster with my irresponsible gossiping. so i didn't post about it and deleted any of the asks/convo about the new cast, even though ofc everyone has had tonsss of thoughts about it 😅
anyways would have laid down my whole life betting john robins (one of THE most obvious future tm contestants, being such a good friend of alex's!) and joanne mcnally would be on so i feel very vindicated — and excited! — in that regard! we're gonna have a great time :)
someone sent an anon asking about people i'd bet — not who i want, but who i'd bet — would be on the show so i'll think more about that and post later this week! the series will def have more seasons so i'll try and get some guesses in heh
OMG ME TOO her name is mabel! she's sooooooo cute ≧◡≦
hello anon!! actually you don't need me for this, it was recently posted on tv_bunny :)
enjoy!
she's great! she reminds me a lot of roisin, in that when she's not doing her semi-pre-written joke material, she's supremely good at hanging, bantering, fitting in with the vibe. i really appreciate that when it comes to panel shows particularly! but i can't say i've seen much of her standup
(wait — can i digress for a second — roisin is one of the ONLY recurring catsdown contestants who actually brings in sensible mascots that have the purpose of helping her/bringing her luck, and her presentations of them are always so hilarious and she deserves more credit for that)
+ not important but i really like her voice
thank you for sending her well wishes <3
i appreciate the message and you weren't the only person to say this, but i think some people are only part-way informed as to her journey reclaiming her name. her intention was never to scrap the nickname shappi or stop people from calling her that; it was 1) to reconcile her experience growing up in the uk with her name and how that led to her committing to shappi as a teen, and 2) to be published, credited, and billed as shaparak in professional capacities. she has clarified many times, including here and here, that it is totally acceptable to call her shappi; people on tv & radio still call her shappi after formal introductions, like in the new wilty when everyone calls her shappi throughout the entire episode; her social media handles are still shappi; and so on. she's shaparak, but that doesn't mean she "no longer goes by shappi". there is some confusion here i think some people are taking her journey, which was lovely to follow, as rejecting shappi — but that isn't the case.
i already updated her tag to 'shaparak khorsandi' a while ago and would definitely credit her full name where necessary, but socially, colloquially, like in the quick text post i made asking people to give shappi some love, there is no disrespect in calling her that! of course, plenty of people are credited by one name and are regularly called another/a nickname, like olivia colman who is actually called sarah by her family and colly by most everyone else. she seems really happy with having done her book and her recent show under her full name, and it's been beautiful to see her come around to love shaparak as much as she has loved shappi :')
btw for anyone who doesn't know, shaparak means butterfly in farsi!
hahahahaha that is hilarious
long story short is just that keith lemon is a disreputable character (and i mean character literally, he's not real, he's played by leigh francis!) who spends a lot of his energy shouting and oogling over boobies etc
i think it's fair to say hating on white supremacists does bring us all together 😅
i'm sorry i haven't seen it! but ugh tamsin greig is one of my longest-time crushes fr i actually think the friendship between her and stephen mangan is one of my roman empires. i have a list of scripted tv rewatches i plan to do this year — the thick of it, peep show, and so on, some of my faves ever — and green wing is def on the list so maybe i'll add friday night dinner!

The competition's motto is "united by music," and the EBU, a group of public media organizations, sees itself as an "apolitical" entity putting on an "apolitical" event. (Israel, alongside other non-European nations like Australia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, is allowed to participate through membership in the EBU.) But in Feb. 2022, one day after Russia invaded Ukraine, the EBU announced the country was banned from participating in the song contest. “The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute," the statement read. Yet this year, the EBU ignored calls from artists, politicians, and fans to remove Israel from the contest after the IDF launched its ongoing, brutal counter-attack on the Gaza strip following the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7. In the months since, 1,139 Israelis and more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict. This might seem hypocritical, and it is. But the comms specialists have their own explanation. According to a Eurovision FAQ page created to defend the organization's decision to allow Israel to compete, the EBU clarified that Russia was suspended because of the Russian broadcasters' "persistent breaches of membership obligations and the violation of public service values." The issue, it seems, was never the invasion, could never be the genocide. "When 10,000 civilians are killed in more than two years in Ukraine, Eurovision is political. When 40,000 are killed in Gaza in just 7 months, most of whom women and children, the competition is non-political," wrote Fianna Coleman in a piece for Tribune Mag. Like anywhere else, being "apolitical" at Eurovision is a political act. In 2019, when Eurovision was held at Tel Aviv, Iceland was fined after their entry, the band Hatari, held up scarves decorated with Palestinian flags as the results were announced. The EBU issued the fine, it said, because Hatari's action violated the competition's rules banning political messages during the competition. The only flags that are allowed at Eurovision are the flags of competing countries, as well as pride flags. So while fans and performers were banned from carrying Palestinian flags, the Israeli flag remained, by Eurovision's rules, perfectly allowed.

How to Think About Politics Without Wanting to Kill Yourself
Hamilton Nolan
There are Enemies, and then there are Cowards.
Some people expect politicians to be heroes, and treat them as such. They pick a team, and they embrace a candidate, and they fawn over them, and idealize them, and treat them in the way that fans treat celebrities, or that medieval peasants treated kings. Not only is this unhealthy for the fabric of our civic society; it is unrealistic. You cannot be a fully moral person and be elected president of the United States.
.
I am bringing this up because, every election year, millions of politically concerned Americans struggle with this cognitive dissonance.
People want heroes as leaders, but you must swallow an enormous dose of bullshit in order to fawn over a major party presidential candidate.
Typically, the way that we deal with this is to ignore and wave away the bad things that our preferred candidates do.
People have a hard time accepting the fact that they will be voting for someone who will certainly do evil things.
What does that say about us, the voters?
Others deal with this by deciding not to vote or to voting for purist protest candidates, which, in our unfortunate two party system, effectively helps the candidate furthest from their own preferences.
“Everything is fine!” some say, putting on blinders.
“I can’t possibly support this candidate’s position on XYZ,” others say, maintaining their own sense of morality while, in the material world, helping to elect the worst possible person.
Both of these choices are flawed. Yet we all find ourselves here, over and over. What to do?
.
Untangling this ethical knot is, I think, a matter of perspective. It comes down to the way that you think of what politics is. For the most part, it is wrong to think of elections as contests between “good” and “bad” candidates. With few exceptions, it is more accurate to divide most politicians into two broad categories:
Enemies
and
Cowards
.
The enemies are those politicians who are legitimately opposed to your policy goals.
The cowards are those politicians who may agree with your policy goals, but will sell you out if they must in order to protect their own interests.
Embrace the idea that we are simply pushing to elect the cowards, rather than the enemies. Why? Because the true work of political action is not to identify idealized superheroes to run for office. It is, instead, to create the conditions in the world that make it safe for the cowards to vote the right way.
Under this framework, you can set aside the tedious feelings of disappointment that come with holding moral views while also supporting any politician. Will your favorite candidate do something bad? Almost certainly. After all, they are cowards.
The onus is on us to give the cowards a soft path to the moral choice.
.
The willingness to overlook certain morally indefensible things is something that most people accept, in their own hearts, when they go into electoral politics. If there is a hell, I expect that many well-liked and popular Democratic politicians will end up there.
But here in the material world, we are trying to achieve tangible things.
The cowards, unlike the enemies, can be moved into the right place.
That is why we vote for them, when faced with the choice of the two.
.
In general, it is better to think of even the politicians on your own side not as role models to be admired but rather as basically disreputable figures who are necessary to deal with but who should always be looked down upon and forced to prove, through action, that they are not pieces of shit.
.
So cease your valorization of political candidates, and cease also your tortured moral struggle over “supporting” a candidate who has done something awful.
Accept that all we will get from the next election is someone who can be made to do the right thing under pressure, rather than someone committed to doing the wrong thing no matter what.
.
There are many heroes in this world, and very few of them are politicians.
Our job is to get so strong and organized that the cowards will have no choice but to come along with us. The real action in politics is not in Washington. It is right where you are.

THE SEA EAGLE
NO MONKEY BUSINESS !!
Finals - Week 1
Manly Sea Eagles 24
Defeated
Canterbury Dogs 22
Having lost the opportunity last week to host a final at Brookie, with an uncharacteristically poor performance against the Sharks, Manly had to venture into hostile territory to take on the Dogs in week 1 of the finals.
The Dogs were without their gun winger Josh “the Fox” Addo-Carr, who found himself on the wrong side of a random roadside drug test. It has been reported that the Fox voluntarily stood himself down from this game after initially telling Dog Management that he had returned a negative test but like most things rugby league the full story of what went down is largely lost in translation and open to interpretation. What we do know now is that the Fox’s secondary test has also been confirmed as positive which will no doubt result in the Fox being charged by the NRL Integrity Dept for bringing the game into disrepute and spending a few weeks on the sidelines next season.
If the Dog’s were reeling from the Fox’s absence they certainly did not show it in the opening stanza. In fact, the Dogs came out all guns ablaze and caught Manly on the hop. Unlike the Dogs, Manly seemed off the pace, error ridden and not in the contest.
Not surprisingly it was the Dogs that opened the scoring when Jacob Kiraz crossed in the corner, with this try on the back of a Tommy Turbo error. Mistakes in finals football rarely go unpunished and in the early stages of this game Manly were making plenty.
Somewhat against the run of play, Manly capitalised on one of their few attacking opportunities, with Tommy Talau the final recipient of a slick backline play. As an ex-Tiger young Talau has no finals experience but to the Sea Eagle’s surprise he has been a very sound performer all year and his performance in this game was generally solid.
For most of the remainer of the first half the Dogs held the ascendency and repeated pummelled Manly in both attack and defence. Tries to Villiame Kikau and Stephen Crighton saw them run out to a commanding 16-6 lead. Being ex-Panthers its not surprising that Messrs Kikau and Crighton were front and centre for the Dogs on the big stage.
Things were certainly looking dire for Manly, but with only minutes remaining in the half (and very much against the run of play), rookie winger Lehi Hoppaote leapt high to retain a bomb and duly put Ethan Bullemor across to score. 16-12 at the break. Leading up to this Young Hoppa was having a tough initiation to finals football having been manhandled by larger Dogs forwards on multiple occasions. It’s fair to say that young Hoppa, who at age 18, tips the scales at around 80kgs is a prospect and when he bulks up, he will be a very fine player. Kudos to the young man for hanging in there, continuing to compete and coming up with some big plays in the second half..
When the Dogs opened the scoring in the early part of the second half, the Sea Eagle was privately contemplating Manly’s mad Monday festivities (and whether the Fox would get an invite as guest of honour). Thankfully none of the Manly players were thinking mad Monday just yet and somehow, they continued to hang in there. There was certainly a lift in their intensity and slowly momentum began to shift. In fact, the turning point as far as the Sea Eagle was concerned was when the TV cameras panned up to the Dogs coaching box disclosing none other than Jason Taylor sitting next to Head Coach Ciraldo. Notwithstanding the score was 22-12 to the Dogs at this stage the scene was set for a Manly comeback and a Dogs choke.
The exploits of Jason Taylor are widely documented. Ex North Sydney, so the stench of the Bear runs strongly through his veins. Add to this a stint at the Eels, under Brian Smith so also DFI infected, and then sacked as Rabbits coach after being beaten up by one of the players at a Mad Monday gone wrong. Whilst Phil Gould has done a great job in terms of player recruitment and head coach Ciraldo (mainly by pilfering premiship winning Panthers), the appointment of Taylor can only be interpreted as a due dliignce failure.
When Cherry Baby crossed in minute 55, Manly were back in the hunt. This try was a work of art from a scrum close to the Dogs line with a slight of hand from Luke Brookes, deft angle running from Tolatu Koula and sublime finishing. It was not surprising that it was Cherry Baby leading the way in Manly’s resurgence and in the last 20 minutes of this game he was everywhere. There is nothing left to be said about the great man (i.e. Cherry Baby), apart from when the stakes are at their highest, he never fails to deliver.
Manly were continuing to go from strength to strength and were coming home with a wet sail against a tiring Dogs team. The match winning try was something to behold. Deep in their own half, on the fifth tackle the play was ignited by none other than Cherry Baby who found Tommy Turbo in open play. Up until this point Turbo had been somewhat quite and it was obvious he was still suffering from one of his many injuries. That said, again when it counted most he was there and some quick backline offloads found speedster Koula in open play. Young Koula is lightning fast but he had plenty to do here, beating numerous would-be tacklers to cross for an extraordinary try.
Pleasingly Manly were able to play out the last 8 minutes or so and control much of the play on their terms. That said they were aided by a Dogs team who by this stage could not believe the hole they had found themselves in. The Dogs efforts in the closing stages can be best summed up by a simple first play drop by Bronson Xerri coming off his own line. Young Xerri is ex-Shark, so a choke in a big game is not surprising.
As far as the Sea Eagle is concerned this is the best Manly win in past 20 years. This was a backs to the wall, never give in effort that makes you proud to be a supporter of the maroon and white. In the first half they were completely dominated, yet never threw in the towel. The second half, they lifted to a man. Apart from Cherry Baby, forwards Matt Lodge and Taniala Paseka never shirked the task. Haumole Olakatu was his usual beast and Jake Turbo and Lachlan Croker never stopped tackling.
Can Manly win the Comp? Probably not. But they have given their fans hope and we all get to watch at least another Manly game in season 2024. Next week, it’s the Chooks in a game that Manly can win, but they will need to play with less errors and more discipline than was what was offered against the Dogs.

NANS tackles ASUU over call for FUTO VC’s resignation
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has cautioned Academic Staff Union of Universities ,ASUU, over its call to the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Prof. Nnenna Oti, to resign. It warned the university lecturers’ organisation to rescind from such ugly move or face the wrath of students. The students’ body which noted that the FUTO vice chancellor had not done anything wrong to deserve such call, accused ASUU of being responsible for instability in the nation’s universities. Recall that members of ASUU, Owerri zone, had last Friday, demanded the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Prof. Nnenna Oti, over alleged corrupt practices and anti-union activities. ASUU, through its Zonal Coordinator, Dennis Aribodor, at press conference in Awka, Anambra State capital, demanded immediate resignation of the FUTO Vice Chancellor. The union is composed of members from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umuahia and Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka. But reacting to ASUU demand while addressing the media, Sunday evening, in Abuja, NANS’ Vice President,Comrade Ezenagu Victor, while noting that ASUU had long deviated from its core mandate, called on the federal government to proscribe the union. He said:”it has become expedient to address the unbecoming attitude of the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities. The latest of which is the provocative call by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,zonal leaders for the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology,Owerri,to resign her position over alleged corruption. “We feel concerned to react to the ASUU demand because the Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Nnena Oti, is a mentor to many of us, particularly, our female folks. We were shocked when we read about the ASUU demand in most national dailies about the woman who has personified integrity, honesty and transparency. Sequel to this, NANS has been able to carry out investigation by interacting with both students and staff of the institution”. “Although we were not able to have any discussion with members of FUTO Management as they said part of the issue we wanted to inquire of was already in court. Our finding has shown that the allegations against the vice chancellor were not only unfounded, but also malicious and wicked. Testimonial evidences garnered by NANS points to the fact that the action of the ASUU leaders is a mere political vendetta.” NANS claimed that the alleged attack on Prof. Nnenna was because of her gender, as well as transparency in the discharge of her duties as Vice Chancellor. “Those who lost to her during the vice chancellorship contest as well as those who could not use her to achieve their ungodly aims during the national assignment have resulted to using ASUU to grind their axe with her, thus making the university ungovernable,”he alleged. He spoke further:”We, the National Association of Nigerian Students, wish to draw the attention of ASUU in particular and the public in general, that those fighting the Vice Chancellor of FUTO by proxy are obviously threatening peace and tranquility in the university. “We are already informed that the disturbance is aimed at causing industrial action at the university so as to bring her to disrepute at the expense of students’ learning. It should be well noted that all industrial disputes have major side effects on students who suffer untold hardship during and after such disputes.” Some of the effects,he mentioned, include waste of students’ precious time, amounting to the students spending longer years in the university and waste of resources, as student end up paying more school fees.
