JUST LET COLOSSAL HAPPEN & YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID

Well COLOSSAL was totally not at all what I went in expecting... but it turns out the COLOSSAL film I got was actually better. It's bit of brilliantly made cinema and a very welcome, refreshing surprise. The trailer makes COLOSSAL seem like a quirky little drama/comedy with a sprinkle of sci-fi, but I think that's because they were not sure how to market it. COLOSSAL does contain the drama, sci-fi and comedy... but those are just a disguise for what is a truly a unique black comedy. So there I am enjoying my quirky dramedy when a little over halfway through, there is a shocking moment when, almost like someone flipped a switch, COLOSSAL goes from what was feeling like a plucky, ironic comedy love story to a dark and hardcore drama thriller. I'll be honest it was quite jarring at first and I was not sure how to take it, but as the film's story continues down this new, rather dark and frightening path, I realized the filmmakers had thrown little hints about where things were headed and who these characters really were from the start... After this 'flip' things do indeed get dark. Anne Hathaway plays a down on her luck, heavy drinker/alcoholic who returns home to suburbia from the big city... there she runs into old friend played by Jason Sudeikis. Both Hathaway and Sudeikis are perfect in their roles. On the surface Hathaway is flawed, lovable and broken and Sudeikis is charming and funny as a Joe Average, but COLOSSAL, turns out, is not that simple. Both Hathaway and Sudeikis end up taking these characters to some unexpected places and depths. Bravo to them and the filmmakers for seriously misdirecting their audience... You really are settled into watching what appears on the surface to be a formulaic hollywood story... but COLOSSAL has much more to offer. As for the monster... well in the trailer Hathaway is somehow in control of and connected to a giant monster that appears in South Korea. Weird... but it works. You'll see. Know that COLOSSAL is not simple, nor is it complicated either, yet it remains complex. Odd but accurate. COLOSSAL refuses to be categorized (even calling it a black comedy doesn't feel totally accurate). The best I can do is this... It's a funny, bizarre, confusing, original, odd, creature-feature, smart, dark, jarring journey of a film. It's a time old Hollywood story of triumph and change, that turns everything one expects from that story on its head. Go in blind, don't try to force it to be one thing... let the COLOSSAL story just happen and you'll be glad you did. Very good stuff.

Hey everyone, go watch Summer of ‘84 now! It’s streaming on all platforms and one of the top ranked films on iTunes Horror! This is the kind of classic film that will give you the chills & make you scurred. @carolinecasting and I always gravitate towards this genre first so we have a special appreciation for Summer of ‘84.
