Wait... Do the Gerudo still live around the ancient, infinitely flowing spring rock here?
If so, then I can't help but feel like Gan has very little excuse for his people not thriving.
It's very possible to plant a decent number of crops in the desert so long as you have ready access to water & knowledge of how to plant them.
A lot of the ingredients we find in the games would be able to, in fact.
Hylian Tomatoes, any Pumpkin, any Carrot, any Radish, Stambulbs, & Tabantha Wheat.
This, plus the things we know can grow there, Wildberries, Voltfruit, Dazzlefruit, Shock Fruit, Sundelions, Hydromelons, Warm & Cold Safflina, Spicy Pepper, Palm Fruit, & Zapshrooms. Not to mention the Cave Fish, Brightcaps, & very rare Truffles that you can find in the caves.
Yes, it'd be very difficult, but with the time & effort, the Gerudo should be able to thrive every bit as well as Egypt or Mesopotamia.
In a lot of ways, if the water from the fountain truly is infinite, then they should actually be as, if not more prosperous as a kingdom that even Hyrule. So, I just... *growls in frustration*
Sorry, this is one of those tender spots...
By here, do you mean like… in one of my stories?? I’m assuming you do, or TotK? Because OoT/WW/TP Gan’s Gerudo are nomadic and don’t have infinite water supply.
If you’re talking TotK, I… have no clue lol.
But if you’re talking my stories, then I’ll go into some detail.
In Golden Mercy, Ganondorf is from OoT. He’s used to hunting for resources. Hyrule’s appeal is very much due to its abundance, based on how he acts in WW. But when Gan travels to the Calamity timeline and meets Nabooru and her tribe, it’s a completely different Gerudo. They’re a prospering civilization, they have multiple settlements and a thriving culture in the desert. Gan is honestly so satisfied by it that he settles down and has a family. Hyrule is just a neighboring kingdom, and while he might covet its landscapes as they’re so different from his own, it’s less, well, dire for lack of a better word. The main driving force that pushes Gan to start the Imprisoning War that leads up to Hyrule Warriors is because Gan learns that the Triforce exists in this timeline too and that is too enticing to ignore. Gan is selfish and power hungry, after all.
In TotK: Hero of Shadow, it’s more up in the air since TotK is bare bones on Gerudo lore. Seems more like a conquest thing, Gan wants to spread his power and influence, maybe he wants resources too, idk. Totk Gan strikes me as a conqueror, as someone who craves challenge and thinks the world belongs to him. (Whereas OoT Gan, while wanting to claim power for himself, seems to come from a bit more desperate circumstances)

In one of the yiga journals in the depths a yiga member complains about the bitter taste of the sundelions basically implying these idiots eat them raw. I think it would be hilarious for master kohga to find out and just lecture the shit out of the yiga clan on how to actually cook.
That's dumb as fuck, I love it, let's do it.
Kohga was ever in his element. Teaching everyone what new machinery to make, how zonai devices functioned, teaching them of how things worked in the depths. It was dark, a bit dreary, and it was a perfect home for yiga alike.
"You still have lots to learn about it hear, you know. Like Frox? Ugh, they're awful creatures. They eat ANY light they see, and they squeal like wounded hogs. Ridiculous."
Sooga definitely didn't understand EVERYTHING, but he knew more than most. He took notes of everything his Master said, wanting to study them later.
"Understood. However, I think we should teach these men the basics."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the men are very food motivated. Teaching them about things they can forage down here can be helpful."
Kohga thought about it for a second, stopping in his tracks, before motioning for Sooga to lean down. He obeyed, and was blessed with very affectionate chin scratches.
"You are such a smart, smart boy, Sooga~. Von, get me a cooking pot!"
Soon enough Kohga had a cooking pot in front of him, and he pulled out some ingredients he had gathered by himself.
"Listen up, you lot! We're gonna go over some food we can live on in here! These here? Bomb flowers. These are WEAPONS. Do NOT PUT THEM IN, OR NEAR THE FIRE. We clear?"
There was unanimous nodding, and Sooga followed suit. He wouldn't be tempted to eat them, but drawing Kohga in this scene would be adorable.
"Okay, next. These are puffshrooms. Again, more effective of a weapon, given their effects. These, brightcaps, HIGHLY encourage you eat these, they give you a glow effect. But be CAREFUL, frox love light. Okay, next, sundalions-"
One yiga winced, stepping away as if it was poisonous.
"Ew, gross. Those are bitter. And the stems hurt my throat."
"Oh dude I choked on a petal once."
"...what. Are you saying you guys have been eating these raw?"
"Well yeah, they're like apples, right?"
"NO. THEY'RE NOT- oh my god, some of you grab a pen and paper. You would all die in here without me."
"That's why you're the best, Master Kohga!"
Sooga leaned a bit to Von, keeping his voice low.
"I've been eating them raw. I rather like them, honestly."
"...damn, I thought I was the stupid one."
#asks#kohga#sooga#get this#sooga was the one that started it#sooga LIKES eating these things because hes built to not be picky

Finding Her - Chapter 5
Link makes notes, takes photos and keeps time on his quest across Hyrule, in the hopes of finding Zelda and staying sane until he does. [ Previous | Next | First | AO3 ]
Purah Pointer: This time of year is commonly referred to in Hylian nomenclature as Summer Rising. Savvy travellers will avoid Eldin or Gerudo at this time of year due to extreme temperatures.
Log date: 20:25. 6th month, 1st day 104AC Location: Lindor’s Brow Cave, Hyrule Ridge Weather: Warm. Showers easing.
Circling back to Lookout Landing, then onto Eldin. Ran into Impa again on my way out of Rito Village. She said there was another geoglyph in Eldin Canyon. Plus there will be something troubling the Gorons, no doubt. Going to go straight there. Don't want to get distracted.
Spent all my rupees on a full Snowquill set for Winter so sleeping in this cave instead of the nearby stables. It's surprisingly warm. There are brightblooms on every wall and the brightcap mushrooms growing here don't taste too bad. Bought some goat butter in Rito Village so throwing together a mushroom risotto -- it's glowing, which is hopefully a good sign.
Wondering if there were always caves here. Probably has something to do with the Upheaval. Since it happened everything is just a little different. Things aren't quite where I remember. Places aren't quite what they were. Old friends are on new paths, while others just aren’t around these days. There's something that can't be described happening to Hyrule. A change, a mystical kind, that can't be named.
Case in point — there was a large, magical frog in this cave. It was bright blue, had half a dozen eyes and long feathery antlers, and looked nothing like any frog that could or should exist. Was setting up my bedroll and cooking pot when it jumped into view. Acted by instinct and shot it with an arrow. But then it… exploded? And dropped something shiny. And somehow none of that was a surprise.
A photograph of a bubbul gem — a six-pointed crystal that is a cross between a snowflake and a fern. It is held up for the camera with and is no bigger than a rupee. It glows softly.

Log date: 11:00. 6th month, 3rd day 104AC Location: Nihcayam Lightroot, the Depths Weather: Not Applicable
Might have gone off course. Josha wanted me to investigate more of the statues down in the Depths and I thought, sure. I've survived Gloom before. I’ve done a couple dozen Shrines of Light so I’m feeling stronger. And Josha is what, seven? If they're letting a kid oversee research into the Depths, it can't be that bad.
Wrong. It is bad. It's dark, the air is sticky (somehow), my arm is cramping up from throwing so many brightbloom seeds and the monsters down here hit a lot harder. One so much as throws a rock at me and I can feel my blood turning to stone. (Gotta thank Tulin for his avatar next time I'm in Hebra, it has gotten me out of a few scrapes now).
There's a Lightroot in the distance. Just need to survive long enough to reach it. Whatever it is that Josha is looking for down here, it can’t be far.
A photograph taken from the underside of a Lightroot, its sturdy vines wrapping around the central orange tuba and rising up towards the surface above.
Caption: Where there is dark there must be light.

Incoming transmission… Processing… Transmission received. Downloading information packet and installing to the Purah Pad. Please stand by.
Message Medallion activated.
Connection established.
12:09 JSH| Link, can you see this message? Link, it's Josha. There should be a prompt on the Purah Pad for you to respond. Sorry if this is sudden. Link?
12:13 LNK| What is this
12:14 JSH| Oh good you're alive! This is the Message Medallion, it's still a prototype. Goggles came up with it. Don't tell him about this, okay?
12:14 LNK| Okay Why
12:16 JSH| He doesn't know I'm borrowing it. It's still volatile. We can't talk long. In the alpha stage of the project, it caused the Purah Pad to explode 85% of the time.
12:18 JSH| Link? Are you still there?
12:20 LNK| Yes Afraid to type
12:21 JSH| It's not going to explode now, silly. In the beta stage, Goggles got the explosion rate down to 45%.
12:21 LNK| Great
12:22 JSH| You're probably wondering why I borrowed it to contact you.
12:22 LNK| Yes
12:24 JSH| Okay. So we've just discovered that Sundelions, those strange flowers that grow near sky rubble, have a cooling effect on Gloom. When applied topically they seem to completely negate its effects. No one was brave enough to try and go down to the Depths to tell you, but I thought you should know. I swiped the Message Medallion while Goggles wasn’t looking. Have you seen any Gloom yet?
12:24 LNK| No none at all
12:25 JSH| Wow, really? Goggles said the Depths is covered in it, and that I’m not allowed down there for at least another ten years. Or until I get my doctorate, whichever comes first. But maybe this will change his mind!
12:25 LNK| I am kidding 12:28 LNK| Sorry
12:30 JSH| It's okay, it’s fine! I'll just have to work extra hard! I really appreciate you doing this for me, Swordsman. It'll cut a year off my thesis at least!
12:31 LNK| Anytime You are doing great All the best researchers break the rules
12:33 JSH| Really? Do you have a source?
12:33 LNK| What
12:33 JSH| Dr. Purah says everything needs to be backed up by a source.
12:34 LNK| It is my opinion
12:35 JSH| Oh, well in that case I agree! Anyway, looks like time's up. Goggles is done with his cryptic crossword, so I gotta go. I have to disconnect the Medallion too, sorry. Remember Link, sundelions!
Connection terminated.

Just going to sit here a while and catch my breath. Wasn't expecting to find at the end of Josha's long line of statues a madman and his horseless Zonai carriage. But I did, because somehow Master Kohga is back.
The years since we last fought have done more for his theatrics than his combat skills. Tempted to chase him to the very edge of this damned place and drive him away for good, but… can't get distracted. Gotta get to Eldin. Gotta find the next geoglyph, gotta find Zelda.
The Steward Construct here is making me some crystalised charges while I rest and finish this Sunny Veggie Porridge I made. I'll have enough charges for a whole new battery soon. Maybe it's time to dig more into the Zonai tech. Kohga made some impressive (and deadly) creations. Could do the same. Make myself some kind of self-powered cart, or a glider for exploring the sky islands, or a sentry turret to take out bokoblins. Or even a trebuchet.
No. Can't get distracted. Eldin tomorrow. Going to take my horse and not turn off the road for anything alive or dead.
A photograph of Master Kohga on an oversized Zonai-powered automobile, with spikes on the front. The vehicle is advancing on the camera at a brusque but non-fatal speed. Master Kohga is visible from behind the control stick and appears to be waving a fist.
Caption: Portrait of a dork.

Log date: 17:50. 6th month, 5th day 104AC Location: Woodland Stables, Eldin Weather: Warm, clear skies.
Goddess preserve me. I've been here a day and a half. And in that time I have:
Ferried some musicians to the Great Fairy Tera
Proofread Penn’s article about it (not sure what he wanted — underlined some bits at random)
Helped Kilton with his brother Koltin, who for some reason wants to EAT the bubbul gems I've been finding
Promised the stable owner to get a photograph of some hot springs for advertising
Explored three shrines and two caves (still don't have enough rupees for a bed)
Put down a boss Bokoblin
Put up a sign with Addison
I'm no nearer Eldin or the next geoglyph than I was the day I left Rito Village. Everyone everywhere needs help and everything everywhere is calling out to be explored. But it's nice. To feel needed. To discover new things. Despite the detours I have to admit, maybe I'm not having the worst time. Hold fast, Zelda. The road back to you might wind a little, but I'm going to get there, by Hylia I swear it.
A photograph of a group of Hylians sitting around a fire; musicians, stable workers, even a tall white Rito, his flying mask worn around his neck to reveal small but inquisitive eyes and a long cheery beak. The next photograph is of Link, smiling and sitting at the fire too, a bowl of stew in hand. In the corner of the photograph, the camera lens appears to be partially obscured by a blurry white feather.

Day 104: Mushrooms and Fairies
No truffles in the cave under the geoglyph - but there are plenty of bomb flowers. Hmm. Right. I'll try that snowfields cave, but after that I might need to focus on something else.
It's been maybe weeks since I just wandered the world. It is nice to actually see the sky and the fields and the trees, the Ring Ruins from afar, the friendly smoke from the stables.
I've been so focused on finding the Princess - and I still am! But this is worth saving too. Hyrule itself.
I head to what I now realise is called Brightcap Cave, which does not bode well for my truffle hunt.
Nope, just brightcaps. Alright. Truffles are maybe too rare to plan for. I decide to look for fairies next, in my efforts to be more resilient against the Demon King. I remember seeing loads on sky islands - but where?
Although. There's been a blood moon since I went to that cave by Woodland Stable. Let's try that again.
I glide down towards the cave, and spot some horses on the road. It might be faster to ride…
This instantly backfires, as I land on the back of a beautiful blue-black horse and decide to keep him.
We ride back to the Stable, and I call him Roan for his beautiful coat.
And it turns out, fairies are not renewed at a Blood Moon anyway. Interesting. Time to try sky islands with fairy pools. The map suggests Sokkala Sky Archipelago might be a good option.
I don't think I'll ever tire of sunsets from the sky islands.
Hmm. No fairies here either. Am I carrying too many? I thought I could have more than three. Maybe I should cook these and come back?
A quick pit stop at East Akkala Stable, and I'm back. Excellent - I was right. I catch three more. Now we're in business - I start cooking and catching fairies to prepare myself as much as possible for what's to come.
Dinraal flies past on a trip back to the Stable, majestic in the night sky.

hey so since brightcaps are a common favourite among the rito children....does the glowing effect apply to them as well. please say yes. please say there are kids who eat too many of them in one sitting or in a huge dish and they're luminescent for like half an hour. somebody kickstarts a pun-fest and it's the bane (affectionate) of the adults' afternoon
#* roosting / ooc.#kido would do this. not even because he loves them to That Point he just likes making his friends laugh sdlfkjfl#not exactly meta...but i like the vibe of this post sdlkfjfj#i just needed an excuse to say that i'll be gone for tomorrow because it's! my anniversary with my loveliest lady!!! <333#sorry i wasn't on much today i was busy coding sldkfjkd messages and writing will be gotten to tomorrow!! thanks for your patience folks!

Minor Tears 0f the Kingdom spoilers, my selfship involves Rauru who you go through the entire tutorial area with so I don’t think he’s as much of a spoiler at this point, but I ship with him in the context of the events at the very beginning of the game Diverging From Canon, so no real story spoilers for the story in the present of the game because I’m just borrowing the world and doing whatever I want lmao
Though I don’t intend to spoil anything story related, if you’d prefer to avoid any potential spoilers for the game in general just skip this post until you’ve found all the memories or something, that should cover most of the relevant info that would pertain to my ship stuff lol
Rather than the disaster that erupts below Hyrule Castle at the beginning of T0TK, what if Rauru’s arm and Zelda’s tear and the Master Sword were actually powerful enough to purify Ganon’s essence and maybe even restore him to his pre-Ganondorf form like everyone wanted?? I haven’t decided on as many details on the Ganon front because a good chunk of my development happens on the other side of the map lmao but alongside purifying Ganon or at least like not turning him into an evil beast necessarily, I thought it’d be neat if Rauru’s power resurrected not only him but his sister and the Champions as well because I want them to have their shot at life, I miss them especially Mipha and I want to be able to interact with them all too lol.
So in this verse/timeline Nova is a star fragment that fell into the Spring of Wisdom atop Mt. Lanayru and was granted sentience through soaking in its waters. She’s the Sage of Stars/Destiny, capable of healing ailments and maladies and assisting wayward souls in navigating their destined paths. Def friends with Naydra and she learned frost and water manipulation techniques from the dragon for the former and from her friends among the Zora for the latter.
She runs a business in Hateno Village, the Hylian settlement she migrated to after she started mingling with mortals more frequently and decided to acclimate to a new and less isolated way of life. It’s called the Three Springs Tavern/Cafe/What have you (often just referred to colloquially as “the Three Springs place in Hateno”) and per a number of the new ingredients in the game (FOOD SPOILER I’ll throw that out there because I didn’t know about any of these when I started playing and it was a happy surprise ToT) the establishment’s specialties include Starlight Tea and/or Cheesecake (assorted milk tea of your choice and cheesecake, both dishes concocted with powdered brightcap or glowing cave fish scales mixed in, a concentration that’s just fine enough to not give any real flavor but it produces a luminescent quality in whatever its mixed with) but they also sell a variety of Hateno’s other specialties and even some regional favorites! Namely Zora or Rito because she tends to prefer their dishes to the Gerudo or Goron diet.
She wears the Frostbite Armor minus the headdress, she knows it’s Zonai in design and she’s studied the ancient Zonai even if she isn’t necessarily ancient enough to have interacted with them personally, although I haven’t fully decided on that yet, and she wears the armor in honor of her friend ofc, and the spring which she still serves and visits frequently!
(Please excuse the horrible tv quality on these screenshots I took them with my phone instead of taking it straight from the switch orz orz)
She ends up meeting Rauru and co because Link/Zelda bring them to her because Nova knows about Zonai stuff and can get the handful of people set up temporarily in Hateno AND she knows the ancient Champions because they were only alive like a hundred years ago right?? And she’s DEFINITELY at least a couple thousand years old, just not necessarily “Hyrule’s Founding” ancient in this case.
But she and Rauru hit it off right away OH and where Sonia is concerned, I figure she can be revived and either they just. Part ways for whatever reason idk, or he can be poly and with me part of the time, because I love Sonia but I just don’t really want to be romantic with her necessarily I’m sorry queen ToT my heart def belongs to Mipha if it was gonna be with anyone in that case which is another reason why it’s not really on my radar to consider, but for now I’m just not even going to think about it because why should I :D
So yeah Rauru/Nova hit it off immediately and he thinks she’s so beautiful in that ceremonial garb and he’s captivated by her starlit radiance and SHE’S (very much just me projecting here) curious to know why he wears the Charged Armor of Farosh, esp when he’s the Sage of Light not Lightning but also it’s fine he just looks so good in it, and she’ll prob get him some comfy casual Hateno threads too ToT AND MINERU…and they crash in her cafe/loft apartment thing where she lives above the shop, and they get to reacclimatize to life in this new Hyrule together. I’m just obsessed with Rauru he’s wonderful and the Frostbite Armor was made for me and ofc Nova’s friends with the Satori and Koroks as well…
And I’ll be sure to add more as things develop :D

ehehe. words time. :)
left: charged shirt + charged trousers (?)
both can be found along dracozu river. theyre inside small rooms. the entrances have lamps outside for easy access! the armor is at the head of the river (close to the mouth lookin part) and the trousers are about halfway down the river. also has a headress near the end of it!
you'll have to do a lot of the main quest for them to open, i think? i havent tried doing it before the part where youre supposed to get em.
right: frostbite armor + archaic greaves
im gonna assume you have the greaves since. its in the tutorial island. if you dont. go get em! put some pants on!
the frostbite armor is in brightcap cave, which is about.. here.
thank you polygon. very cool!
go kill the enemies and make your way through the cave. its a free outfit 🎉
hope this helps! woo!
"he was so insane for this" and it's just the hero of hyrule wearing a cunty little outfit

Brightcap Badger - Fungus Frolic

Day 18: Plans and Promises
We return to Rito Village from the Stormwind Ark. Snow melts off it in sheets.
My head is spinning. I can barely focus as Tulin receives his father's bow. He asks if that was the real Zelda - who else could it be? The enormity of the gap between the Princess and her Swordsman is suddenly immense. She's so far away. The Imprisoning War was thousands of years ago. She was there?? The idea of her being in a war without me... It looks as though she survived the sealing of the Demon King, but even afterwards she was working on something.
People are talking. I try to concentrate. Teba and Tulin say they'll look for the Princess in the mountains. Harth is headed for Lookout Landing, so maybe I'll see him there.
As I'm leaving, I run into Impa - she's made it here already? We were in the Maelstrom for four days, I suppose. She and Cabo are here for a geoglyph and the Forgotten Temple - maybe I could stop there on my way to Woodland Stable.
I drop an ice fruit off to Molli on my way past - I promised I would.
Bedoli says Huck was supposed to be bringing some supplies in from Snowfield Stable northeast of here, but he hasn't arrived yet. I suppose its sort of on the way... Bedoli will give me arrows if I come back with cave fish, as well.
Laissa saw a shrine while she was looking for a white bird - does she mean that snow shelf you can see from the top of the hill? No, it's something else. She says if you stand on Vah Medoh's perch at dawn, it looks like a white bird is resting on the perch's shadow. It marks the cave's entrance. It doesn't exactly sound on the way to anything else, and I've already promised so many people so much.
I sell some gems in exchange for a snowquill headdress - hopefully that will be enough to fend off any more cold, especially if I'm heading to the Snowfield Stable next.
I ask the Goddess statue for stamina, and head out - but there are staminoka bass in the pond, and I promised Genli. I race back up to drop them off, and finally, properly, head out.
Back on the mainland, Gesane is asking Juanelle for a carpenter who could fix the bridge. Juanelle knows a guy at Lookout Landing - are they talking about Karson? I could mention it next time I'm there.
Peaches is waiting for me at the Gazette Headquarters. I hope someone fed her.
It looks like the road to Snowfield Stable goes past a geoglyph, which is good news. I can stop off there, then check out the Forgotten Temple from the Stable, and then in theory head across the hills straight to Woodland Stable. I always feel better with a plan. Time to go.
Just up the hill, I spot a cave entrance and dismount - and Tulin's avatar appears out of nowhere. Terrifying. But his skills are impressive, so I'll get used to it.
There's a camp by the cave, and the journal says that Nat and her sister Meghyn are looking for mushrooms. But they're just standing outside the cave. Meghyn is worried it's full of monsters. I give them my mushrooms instead, so they don't need to check. Meghyn says if I connect enough brightcaps... but she trails off. Something about... him. If I follow them to North Hebra, they'll tell me. Mysterious. Maybe one day I'll bump into them, and solve that little puzzle.
There are monsters in Brightcap Cave, to be fair. And also a very cool backless shirt!
I think maybe those flags mean there are clothes hidden in the cave? And, based on my experience so far, there's a bubbulfrog in here somewhere. I burn the thorns out of the way, and see a flash of blue. Gotcha.
I ascend out of the cave and spot a shrine - and while I'm burning my way through thorns to get to it, there's a blood moon.

My favourite (published!) lines I've written :)
Yowaka Ita {Collected Soul}
--“It’s a laugh, Ulquiorra. You’ve not heard one before?”
“I find it rather unnecessary. Stop it at once.”
Eyebright
--“But what if I’m not?” Ichigo’s voice was small and scared, like a child confessing that he thought there was a monster in his closet. Only in this case, the monster was himself. “What if when it’s all said and done, I’m not recognizable anymore? What if there’s none of me left?”
Dietary Requirements
--Roast brightcap immediately soared to the top of the list of worst things Makeela Riju has ever put in her mouth.
