THE SHEPHERDS OF HAVEN SOUNDTRACK (VOLUME 2) IS OUT NOW!
Listen to Volume 1 here!
Wow, what a journey it's been! The complete soundtrack for Shepherds of Haven, spanning across 32 original songs and two full-length albums, is now officially finished! You can listen to this latest album over on composer Ivan Duch's website!
This volume also contains 16 songs, including theme songs for the remaining Shepherds and other major characters, such as Tallys, Ayla, Halek, Briony, Lavinet, Mimir, Croelle, Prihine, and Caine; motifs and signature music for the game's numerous locations like Heth Macoll, Capra, and the Elven Quarter; and so much more! But beware: if you haven't played the alpha build, there's probably a spoiler or two lurking in there. 😉
As always, watching Ivan's creative process as he's turned the game's textual descriptions and fictional narratives into sonic adventures has been an incredible experience. If you ever feel a desire to commission a cinema-quality piece of music for your own stories or characters (including your own Brightburner), he's open for commissions and is amazing to work with!
You can listen to the new album at any of Ivan’s links below. Feel free to give him a follow and your support, and please, as always, give a shout-out to your favorite tracks! I hope you enjoy! 🎶

do you have the full list for horror movies condemned by the church? Thank you
so there's kinda seperate lists for it, ones condemned by the Legion of Decency, during the years of
Legion of Decency (before it was stopped in 1978):
Rosemary's Baby (because it depicts satanism)

Carrie
The Omen (because it depicts that idea that there is an antichrist in the book of revelations)
J.D.'s Revenge
Dawn of the Dead
The Exorcist (this one is so-so because it was still banned for its profanity & sexual situation, but it's not like they hated the idea that it promoted the catholic church; no the church did not help the exorcist production)
These modern ones morally offended the Catholic Church (this list is offically complete from starting in 2003-July 2022, since OSC News took them over to do movies reviews)

31 Days of Horror Recs: Cross ALL the genres
( @katrani asked for cross-genre horror that isn't comedy or thriller)
So, yeah, this is actually pretty hard. Horror is something that does work well across all genres but 1) it's still not done that often and 2) when it is done it's rarely done well. You mentioned superhero and romance specifically and while I don't have anything on my rec list, I do have two interesting ones that are worth checking out if you're interested in those genres specifically (they're at the end, marked with an *).
Character Study
Pearl - I've never seen a horror movie that is also just a hardcore character study before Pearl. It should be noted, character studies are absolutely not everyone's cup of tea but if you do like them, I think this is well worth the watch. More info on the full post.
Slice of Life
Most Beautiful Island - This is a weird one to have for a horror movie, I know. Slice of life is all about the mundane daily life where not much really goes on and that is almost the antithesis of a horror movie. I don't think this movie is 100% slice of life but I think it's as close as one could ever hope to get. More info on full post.
Teen Movie
Tragedy Girls - This feels like a weird genre to specify since I think there is a lot of horror that plays directly with teen movies, both on purpose and accidentally. However, this one very much leans into the the teen movie aspect of it in a way that makes it one of a kind. More info on full post.
*Romance (tragic)
Return of the Living Dead 3 - So, the basic premise is a girl dies and her boyfriend decides to bring her back to life as a zombie. (Somehow she comes out of it not a mindless murderous zombie like everyone else? I dunno, just roll with it.) But here's the thing, and the reason it ended up on this list: this isn't shown as romantic or sweet. The movie very explicitly shows that this was a cruel thing to do. The girl is suffering; she's in pain, her body feels all wrong, and she's starving and nothing she eats stops the starving feeling. She cries and begs her boyfriend multiple times to just let her go. It is fucked up. It is awful. And it was honestly so fascinating to watch.
*Superhero
Brightburn - Fuck, the premise to this is so good. It's basically: what if a kid was given all the powers of Superman and then told that he was better than everyone else? And the writers said, "He'd do some fucked up shit." It desperately desperately needed more than 90 minutes, though. However, if you're okay with something subpar but interesting, this is worth checking out.
#geeky talks#31 days of horror recs#geeky talks horror#i actually found brightburn when i was trying to remember the name of another movie#that in my head was a superhero movie#but once i found it i realized that nope it wasn't#but this one sounded so interesting that i decided to go ahead and watch it#glad i did i find the whole thing really interesting

A response to some people’s comments...
I saw a post about a comic page that is the antithesis of a scene in Man of Steel. While Zack Snyder’s Pa Kent was worried about the consequences of saving lives, the one from Superman and Lois did not, even emphasizing the importance of saving lives. While trying to look for the specific comic, I’ve seen someone make a counter argument that does kind of make sense, at least to their point of view.
This was a scenario where the consequences for revealing his powers didn’t matter. It is unrealistic to have him display such powers and have nothing come up for it. Reading the comic (Earth-Prime #2 released in 2022), there were no consequences. Nobody really figured out he was Superman or as far as I know no reports of someone saving his life. But after hearing this, it actually reminded me of an anime. Tell me if you heard this before...
There are stories about every hero, how they became great. Most have one thing in common: their bodies moved before they had a chance to think, almost on their own. This is from My Hero Academia where Midoriya risked his life to save Bakugo’s life. From the first two episodes or first few chapters, Midoriya had no powers yet still went out there to risk his life for someone, regardless of the consequences.
This realization made me realize that Man of Steel can’t work as they want. They’re trying to tell a story about a hero but more realistic. Yet the problem is they failed because they didn’t realize that risking yourself regardless of consequences is realistic. Firemen who try to save people from a burning house. Police Officers who try to stop violent criminals (just ignore the bad cops). A father sacrificing his life to save his son. These are heroes who are willing to accept the consequences of their actions.
Yet Mr. Kent in Man of Steel is too worried about Clark’s secret to be gone. He may not like the idea of sacrificing people to do so, but with no other choice he has to to ensure nobody knows about Clark’s heritage. So why would he go out later in the movie to become a hero? If he is so worried about keeping his secret to save his father when quite frankly you don’t even need powers to help him in that scenario really makes it hard to believe he would do stuff like that as an adult.
If this was indeed something more realistic, Man of Steel can’t happen. He would be either too preoccupied in keeping his secret from coming out or join Zod when he makes that offer. He grew up thinking protecting his secret is more important than helping people. So either he would never help people and keep his power to himself, or join Zod for the liberation of finally accepting his powers.
In the quest to be more realistic, it became unrealistic to think someone is willing to become Superman with such an upbringing. That they’re more important than the world. That their secret is more important than other lives. So if you want a more realistic Man of Steel, might I recommend the 1978 Superman movie. But if you want to see the outcome that Man of Steel should have had, check out Brightburn.

Random update on my journey to become a pretentious film buff:
I've been trying to push for a movie a day, at least. Sometimes two if I'm lucky. Sometimes none if I'm lazy. But after my last post where I watched the entire Alien Franchise (sans AvP and Romulus), here's what I've been watching:
Psycho: Yes, I finally watched the original Psycho. To be honest, I've always had a problem watching older movies, so I was surprised at how easy it actually was to watch this one. It was pretty good, though perhaps for the wrong reason. I was honestly laughing through most of it over just how bad these people were at committing crimes and getting away with them. Like that girl was acting so incredibly sus in front of that cop for no good reason. Anyways, 4/5 stars I guess (I'm using Letterboxd to keep track of this).
X & Pearl: In case you don't know, those are two separate movies but they're related via the main character. I watched X first, and Pearl second. Not sure what the intended order of it actually was though, but whatever. It wasn't too bad in that order. Both I thought were pretty good, though I kind of preferred X to Pearl because I thought the "antagonist" motivations in X were...let's just say unique. I can't recall a time where I've seen that particular motivation used. I gave X a 3/5.
Pearl was still pretty good, I just liked X better. Unless you're an idiot like me, the connection between these two movies is pretty obvious, but it tripped me up at first so I didn't wind up understanding it until the very end. Anyways, this movie's good. 3/5 stars (these are arbitrary lol).
Boy Kills World: The one and only non-Horror movie I watched recently. I'm not exactly trying to focus on horror, it's just sort of accidental at this point. I'm in a horror mood so I'm just bingeing horror movies I haven't seen. I swear I watch other stuff too lol.
Anyways, this movie was about as good as one could probably expect it to be. It's just a cheesy, dumb action flick. The plot is middling, but it works. The plot twist is alright. I didn't see it coming exactly, but I also wasn't like "omg no way, what!?", it was just a thing that happened, ya know? Overall, I think my only criticism is that it felt like it was missing a second act. Bill Skarsgard is insanely nice to look at throughout the entire movie though so that's a plus. 3 1/2 stars.
Brightburn: I'm gonna be honest, I didn't care for this movie. It tries to go with the whole "bad guys win" ending that, to me, just fell flat because I don't really give a shit about the bad guy. I'm not sure if I'm meant to feel for him inherently because he's a child, but he's a pretty boring as fuck child so I wound up not caring when he inevitably won. 2/5 stars.
Smile: This movie was OK, but it really felt like that scenario when someone asks to copy your homework and you tell them to just change a few of the details. The one who's homework they're copying of course is It Follows. They have very similar premises, only instead of the monster passing through sex like a shitty STD, this monster passes through trauma like a shitty ex. Personally, I think It Follows did it better. 3/5 stars.
The First Omen: The last on this update, I just finished this right before writing this and it was alright? So, perhaps controversially, I've yet to see The Omen (watching it literally as I type this) so this movie didn't do much for me. I understand it's setting up The Omen though, so that's where the supposed payoff is, but I personally think movies should be able to stand up by themselves, even if they're connected to a franchise, and I'm not sure this one does.
This movie left me confused. It focuses hard on this young girl, leading you to believe she's vitally important and you reasonably assume she's the key figure or "MacGuffin" in this movie, only for us to find out that she's not, and it's actually the main character who's the important one. But then I'm left wondering why I spent the last hour and a half of this two hour movie focused on a red herring.
Not to mention, there's a lingering question I had by the end when everything is burning down which is... if y'all have the actual fucking Devil chained up in your basement as your demonic sperm donor, why the fuck do you need the antichrist so bad?
I'm also just kind of curious about their overall motivations here. Like, we're told that they belong to a different sect of the church who believes that they need to make bad things happen so that more people are drawn to the faith, which at face-value I'm like okay cool, reasonable motivation I guess. But then what is the plan with the antichrist then? They have him get raised by some well-off politician (to set up the Omen) but then what? Presumably you intend to kill him at some point? Is the idea to let him get powerful enough to show everyone he's the legit antichrist, but not so powerful that he doesn't wind up destroying the world like he's meant to? It's just confusing is all, I don't know. Hopefully the Omen explains it. Or the Omen II. Or III. Or IV lol. Anyways, 3/5.

How about mirae and iris from brightburn 👀
"Oh Mirae! She seems nice!" Sea says. Eunwoo nods in agreement.
"Her fashion sense is really good," He compliments. "I say maybe 4 or something. She's not really my type, but why not try too?" Jinhwan nods.
"This I could answer...maybe 2 or something, I've talked to her before, she's really nice," The leader replies. "I want to get to know her more." He smiles, but then quickly adds, "As friends, of course."
Ethan giggles, "For Iris noona...that’s a good question. I've talked to her before. She seems pretty chill, but she also seems pretty chaotic at times."
"We'd make a good pair!" Seokhwa says. "She loves chaos, I love chaos, we'd be good friends!" The youngest rolls his eyes playfully.
"I'd probably take 3 shots. Just so I can have the balls to go up to her."
"Just say that you're also scared of her, and call it a day," Sea sighs.

Movie questions: 2, 8, 13 :)
2. what was your favorite film as a child?
the first spongebob movie OR finding nemo, i adored them both (and watched them soooo so many times...)
8. has a film ever made you extremely angry?
this is a very petty example but its the only one i could think of: i watched brightburn this year and the needledrop of bad guy by billie eilish made me so mad that i dropped my review by a whole star. also my recent descent into the evil bong films genuinely made me angry with the last two or three i watched
13. what is your comfort film?
i swear i keep bringing up the same two movies in every ask i answer but. honestly pride and prejudice (2005) and evil dead 2 😭😭 like i can watch those movies always no matter what...especially pride and prejudice, i watched that like 8 times in 2022

Top 5 Best Films of 2019
Okay, so I don't normally do this, but I've seen so many films this year that I thought I would summarise them by making top 5 lists. This one deals with my top 5 best (or favourite) films of the year.
IMPORTANT: I shall keep these as spoiler-free and short as I can.
5. Midsommar
A film that feels like it was made by a 50+y/o European that was actually made by a 30+y/o American. I initially thought it was kind of 'eh'. However, it did lodge in my head, and the more I thought about it and the more analyses I read/ watched, the more I liked it. It grew on me much like grass grew on our poor beleaguered protagonist in the numerous hallucinations she has over the course of the film.
4. Booksmart
Like the female answer to Superbad only with zero period jokes (thank fuck). Legitimately funny, rewatchable, and the lead characters have great chemistry. Shame that only ten people saw it, but roughly seven of those people - including [REDACTED] and I - enjoyed it immensely. Special mention goes to Billie Lourd, who was a fucking delight to watch in every scene she was in.
3. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
A coherent, beautiful-looking action film that manages to be as good as its predecessors, which is highly unusual in a film series. I still care about the characters at this point, and I'd be happy to follow these characters through many more installments.
2. Doctor Sleep
The only TRULY good 2019 Stephen King adap, do not @ me. Despite one incredibly distressing scene, I would probably buy this on DVD or at least rewatch it. It's good to see Ewan McGregor get work again, especially as a ravaged, PTSD-ridden Dan Torrance, and it's fantastic to see Rebecca Ferguson get good work after the shitstorm that was "The Snowman" and the dull-as-fuck, grossly overrated "The Greatest Showman". Again, it's a shame that only five people saw it (basically). Genuinely good film.
Honourable mentions before we get to my #1, in no particular order:
Ready or Not: Samara Weaving gives it her all in this blackly comic slasher. I want to see her in more things. Also, on a more superficial note, her wedding dress in this was really pretty, even ripped to shreds and completely soaked in blood.
Crawl: A surprisingly good creature feature that was an absolute blast to watch. Also, the dog lives, which I am very happy about.
Knives Out: the best thing Rian Johnson has done since Looper. Strong cast and beautiful to look at (the film, I mean, not the cast), even if I did get a little lost near the end. Oh, and it automatically improves lad culture if you change the title to Get Your Knives Out For The Lads.
Child's Play: a remake that actually managed to update the setting and keep the things that made the original, well, the original? Holy shit. Also, the end credits song is incredibly catchy.
Avengers: Endgame: as anyone who knows me knows, I'm a slut for superhero films. Long as this was, it stuck the landing; it was a 3hr thank you for sticking with the franchise despite most of the films being 'eh'. Also, I LOVED Cap's ending, just saying.
And now, the most important one...
1. Brightburn
Or as I like to call it, We Need To Talk About Kal-El. Jackson A. Dunn was uncannily perfect for the titular role and the gore effects were fantastic (the car scene in particular). It works as a standalone film and the groundwork for any sequels, which I would happily go and watch, btw. I'd been looking forward to this for months, and I got exactly what I wanted from it. End of.
Whew, this turned out to be longer than I anticipated! Thanks for reading if you made it to the end. This has been my top 5 best; I shall post my top 5 worst later today (I'm seeing "Cats", and I anticipate it making the list). 🎵 Stay tuuuned... 🎵
~Mikey

The moral of the story in Brightburn (2019) is: if you find out your son is a super powerful entity who killed your abusive wife-beater of a best friend 1) don't go "He's not our son, he's just the thing we found in the woods" within earshot of him, and 2) DON'T TAKE HIM OUT HUNTING AND SHOOT HIM UNLESS YOU'RE CERTAIN THE BULLET WILL DO THE JOB.
