i think it just comes with no longer being a child myself, but i’m finding myself just as intensely interested in the adults around samantha as i am with samantha itself. aunt cornelia is a big one, of course, but during this rewatch of the movie, grandmary really stood out to me.

and, well, let’s just say that when we meet her, grandmary is holding on by a fucking thread. full thoughts under the cut.

i’ll probably make another post about this more specifically, but the movie costumes seem to imply to me that she’s still in mourning at the beginning of the film. i absolutely see much of sam’s stories through the role grief plays in them so this did clue me into paying more attention to grandmary, but honestly whether she’s meant to be formally mourning or not, it’s so clear that she is desperate for normalcy. she keeps grasping for tradition and routine to keep her from slipping too deeply into her grief. i’m sure she struggles with samantha’s presence as a reminder of the daughter she lost, but she also seems to struggle with her because samantha pushes at the boundaries of what is expected and proper. you see that in their first interaction in the movie—grandmary needs her routine and rules so acutely that she can’t even take a moment to listen to samantha talk about meeting nellie until it is Proper Social Hour, tea time.

the thing that really made it apparent to me that grandmary is using her routines to stay afloat is her reaction to gard and cornelia’s engagement. obviously, this is a children’s movie, and as an audience we’re meant to be paying attention to sam’s reaction in the scene, which itself is intense and telling about samantha’s need for stability and her own grief.

but so is grandmary’s. when we cut to her for a moment after gard says he and cornelia are going to get married, she simply doesn’t look like she’s mentally there. by the time it’s her turn to talk, she appears to be holding back tears. so many things are changing so suddenly: there will no longer be the assurance of gard’s visits or of his absolute devotion to her and samantha. i’m also willing to bet that she can’t help thinking about the fact that the last time one of her children got married, they died relatively soon afterwards.

and then there’s cornelia herself. we know that grandmary will come around to her views, but right now, she poses a threat to grandmary’s understanding of her place in the world. and that’s too much for grandmary. everything is changing and, if she thinks too much about it, she doesn’t know how she is going to manage.

so, in this intense moment where she is about to be drawn in by her grief, she falls back on her (seemingly only) coping skill: social expectations. she’s upset, but she’s a lady, and a lady is always polite. she congratulates gard and cornelia, and then she turns to samantha. samantha, who is so clearly feeling upset in the same ways that she is, but grandmary cannot acknowledge samantha’s feelings or else she’d have to face her own.

so she nods at samantha, a gentle encouragement of what she must say, and samantha says it. i honestly don’t know what grandmary would’ve done if samantha had acted out, but that doesn’t happen. samantha falls into line and says the right thing, and grandmary can go back to pretending that everything is under control.

except, it isn’t. things have changed, and there simply no going back to the way it was. somewhere between this moment and samantha leaving for nyc, something clearly starts to shift for grandmary. whether it’s cornelia, whether it’s seeing the boathouse, whether it’s simply having to realize that she cannot keep things the same forever, grandmary is forced to face herself and the way she is letting grief rule her life. as an audience, we do not get to see this transformation, but the grandmary we meet at the end of the movie is a very different person than who we met at the beginning. for one thing, she’s actually wearing colors, but she’s also finally accepted that proposal. in this, we see her starting to discard some of the rules she was clinging to at the beginning of the movie. as one example, i’m fairly convinced that the grandmary we met at the start of the movie never would’ve stood up for samantha to her teacher about her speech in such a manner, but she does. things are changing, and grandmary is learning that she is still going to have a life where she is cared for and seen even if she has to change from the person she once believed herself to be.

and i think we really see this transformation when it comes to nellie and her sisters. before, it was never like she was cruel towards them, but the boathouse scene where she tries to stand up for nellie is still so loaded with classism. nellie may be important to her granddaughter, but nellie is irish, nellie is a servant, and therefore she still needs to know her place.

and there’s simply none of that sentiment by the time christmas rolls around. someone else has commented on how good the o’malley girls are for grandmary, and you can truly see it here. she is getting to be a grandmother again, and she is in her element. grandmary is finally letting herself exist a little outside of the rules she has always been constrained by, and it is so delightful to see her truly start to live.

like i said at the start of this post, grief is so important to me in understanding these stories. grandmary gets her love from the fandom, but i feel like it’s not acknowledged enough how much she’s going through and how wonderful it is to see her work through her grief and come out the other side. i’m so glad that the movie picks up on this character arc, and that mia farrow really brings her all to the role.

and then american girl had the audacity to put her through the events of the titanic book but we simply do not have time to get angry about that again

bridget works at a family diner in potterfield called “the jackknife” and the logo is a boy in hawaiian print swim trunks doing a jackknife dive. it’s named after the diner owner’s son and their little mascot is jack’s old jack in the box, which is a little bit creepy but mostly cute in a lobotomized kind of way. it’s not the only nor is it the best diner in potterfield, so most patrons of the diner are potterfield locals or elementary school children. every day bridget gets fooled into forgetting that new salembury is haunted until she gets home and the gnomes have burrowed up her flower beds again and then she forgets again the next day like sisyphus dropping the boulder every time.

How on earth did Samantha tell her Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia that she was keeping Nellie and Bridget and Jenny without shedding a single tear? I definitely couldn't have done that, even as part of the Samantha Hivemind.

Also. I've been neck deep in the Samantha Parkington content of my childhood. Her movie, and her keepsake treasury my grandpa used to read to me before bed when I visited. (I reread Samantha Saves the day, which was my favorite as a kid)

I can guess how she didn't cry. 10 year old me would be trying not to laugh because of the delicious feeling of "I know something you don't know!"

Samantha Saves the day was the second American Girl book I ever read, after Samantha's Surprise. I think I have them both memorized. And when I read the books and imagine the narrative, the images I see are the same that I imagined when I was 6 years old.

Yes!

Princess by Gaelen Foley has a lovely scene where Darius and Serafina bathe together shortly after they hook up for the first time. They didn't go all the way~ because she's a princess and he's a kitchen boy bodyguard, but she's very overwrought about everything (she had a Big Day) so he holds her in the tub and it's very cute and hot.

The Duke by Gaelen Foley also has a scene wherein the heroine is in the bath and the hero like... helps her bathe? And then he helps her with other things while she is standing (and he is on his knees), still in the tub, so it counts.

Fantasy-wise, there's Charissa Weaks's Witch Walker series (not standalones). In the second book, Alexus and Raina go to these special pool hot spring things to bathe after a long journey, and they wash each other's hair and stuff. Tbh, they were definitely doing ALL OF IT in their little tents during the journey, so. What's super hot about this too is that they ran out of birth control during the journey (fantasy potions lmao) and the new doses haven't kicked in yet, so they have to... finds some workarounds...

Forget Me Not by Julie Soto is a contemporary romance with a REALLY good tub scene. The heroine is a high-strung overworked wedding planner, and she and the hero are kind of in a casual borderline FWB "what are we" situationship. He... helps her relax.

Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley has a scene where Isabella is in the tub and Mac walks in. He does some things. When the maid comes in he wipes his face off with a towel. So he wasn't in the tub, technically, but he did get pretty wet.

Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt has the infamous scene where Bridget is in the tub and Valentine is watching her and going on about her toes and stuff. He does not get in the tub. Scandalous Desires also has a scene where Mickey is in the tub and Silence comes over and he makes her ~feel him. So neither one is a mutual bath situation, but thought I'd mention it.

The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe has an amazing bath scene after Nellie and Lockwood first hook up, where she's like "I don't want a relationship" and he's like "for sure I am on the same page now let's cuddle in the bathtub while we tell each other our deepest darkest emotional secrets". He is.... RIDICULOUS.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood has an extended, very very good bath scene.

Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole has another "not bathing together but he's watching" scene which is AGAIN fantastic. The hero and heroine are SUPER ENEMIES (he has her imprisoned and wants to annihilate all supernatural creatures, she is a supernatural creature) but as it turns out, they were lovers in SEVERAL past lives. And she remembers this, because she actually never died and is immortal, but he, the reincarnated one, can't. So she bathes and talks about all the things they did in his past lives while he sits there, gripping the chair to keep from jumping her... and then he starts telling her what he'd do to her in THIS life...

American Royalty by Tracey Livesay has a scene where the heroine is in the bath... the hero isn't, I think, but it's another one where he's like "while I'm here om nom nom".

The Music of Love by S.M. LaViolette has an ANGRY BATHTUB BANG scene. The hero and heroine are married but on the outs (she is also pregnant, which is why they're married lmao) during a trip to visit his family. So they're at this inn, and she's in the bathtub, and she's been Lustfully Watching Him Undress sneakily... And he walks in and.... It is SOOOOO GOOD. But also hilarious, because they're mostly just incredibly mad at each other throughout.

A Shore Thing by Joanna Lowell has the leads' first time in a bathtub (I mean, it begins in a bathtub) with what begins as a definitely not innocent bath. They're on a bicycle race together, so they stop in an inn and Things Happen. They also do it in a Victorian bathing machine later lmao

Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath has a bathing scene, I believe. I can't remember exactly what happens, but I'm pretty sure it leads up to this as the hero makes the heroine wash his back as a part of like, her job lmao.

Lisa Kleypas has scenes where the hero "tends" to the heroine in an afterglow bath in Seduce Me at Sunrise and Love in the Afternoon, but I'm not sure if they fully get in the bathtubs. Or just their hands.

The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe: One of my FAVORITE bath scenes; Nellie and Lockwood have just finished round 1 and they're cuddling together in the bath and it's actually So Intimate because they're talking about their sexual preferences in a very frank way, and Nellie ends up seducing Lockwood into a round 2.

Her Wanton Wager by Grace Callaway has this scene where Hunt is trying to win the bet he made with Percy that he'd seduce her by a deadline, but like, "seduction" means p-in-v sex so they do other Stuff in the bathtub (including erotic washcloth use) but she cockblocks him at the end lolol

Heartless Duke by Scarlett Scott: Leo is super sick and Bridget, his prisoner, bathes him while singing Irish songs to him, and they end up cuddling in bed together after.

Brazen and the Beast by Sarah MacLean: a suuuuuper sexually-tense scene where the Whit is taking a bath after a fight and Hattie is hanging around watching him. The Rogue Not Taken also has similar vibes but the heroine is bathing at one of the inns they're staying at during their road trip, and King is kind of watching her.

In a similar vein, both Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas and When a Duke Loves a Woman by Lorraine Heath both have bathing scenes where they hero helps the heroine with her bath and and they're *rife* with sexual tension, though there is a bit of a gap between the bath and any sex stuff.

F-35 TR-3 Deliveries Begin

WASHINGTON (July 19, 2024) – The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) and Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for the F-35 Lightning II, announced that deliveries of the first Technology Refresh-3 (TR-3) configured F-35 aircraft began today.

Two F-35A Lightning II aircraft were delivered, one to Dannelly Field, Alabama, and one to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

“We have initiated a phased approach to the delivery of TR-3 F-35 aircraft,” said Lt. Gen. Mike Schmidt, the JPO’s Program Executive Officer. “The first phase will deliver jets with an initial training capability in July and August. By the end of August, we will be delivering jets with a robust combat training capability, as we continue towards the delivery of full TR-3 combat capabilities in 2025. Our focus has been on providing our customers with aircraft that are stable, capable, and maintainable, and this phased approach does that.”

The newly delivered aircraft follow standard government acceptance procedures that include final airworthiness certifications and check-out flights.

“TR-3 and Block 4 represent a critical evolution in capability and their full development remains a top priority for us,” said Bridget Lauderdale, vice president and general manager of the F-35 Program, Lockheed Martin. “These and further software updates over the life of the program will ensure the F-35 continues to be an effective deterrent and the cornerstone of joint all-domain operations now and decades into the future.”

"I am extremely proud of all the hard work the government and industry team have put into the delivery of TR-3 configured F-35s.This is an important first step, and although much work remains, I am confident our team will work tirelessly to achieve the desired and necessary results that our warfighters, allies and customers require.” Schmidt said.

About your doll collection, can you explain what you have? Also, it's really nice to have a creator in this fandom who talks about the stories and cares about it so much instead of solely focusing on the collector side of things. All of your posts are amazing, and I appreciate them a lot. Thank you!

ahhh, this is such a sweet ask! i'm glad that people like what i have to say about the stories, since they truly are so meaningful to me and have had a major influence in my life. i'm actually going to give babbity kate some credit behind me starting this blog; i've had a history of lurking in ag fan spaces throughout my older childhood years as a fan, and then again when i got on tumblr, but finally seeing someone else who focused on the stories made me want to do that as well.

anyways! onto your actual ask:) a little bit of context: i do have a pretty large collection from childhood (despite growing up middle-lower middle class) because my parents were keen on quality-over-quantity, so really the main items i got as gifts or spent my own money on were american girl items and books. i also got dolls/doll clothes/accessories from the ages of four to fourteen, so there was a lot of time for a collection to develop!

i have nine dolls (samantha, nellie, rebecca, marie-grace, cécile, caroline, molly, emily and grace), and a handful of mini dolls (including some of the holiday ones, but honestly i like the miniature books that the dolls come with more than i like the mini dolls themselves). my clothing collection is a lot of ag, but i also got really into sewing my own clothes for my dolls using the pleasant company patterns. i have a few off-brand furniture pieces, but i do have sam's wicker table and chairs, and i still remember the birthday that i received them:) when it comes to the books, i honestly have a handful of everything! main series, short stories, mysteries, goty, activity books, etc. most of them were bought second hand, and that is the one ag thing i will still buy if i come across some in a used bookstore or the like that i don't yet own.

if you've made it this far, here's a group picture i took of my dolls (plus a couple of china ones that i used as bridget and jenny) as a kid! it's actually driving me crazy that grace isn't in the picture, because i definitely had her by then. i also stand by uhhhh half of the clothes that the girls are wearing (marie-grace is ADORABLE in nellie's spring dress, the poncho that cécile is wearing is questionable at best).

nellie’s going to have this constipated look on her face the entire time and the audience is going to think about her relationship with her mother’s relationship with their culture and they’re going to be like “oh december is going to suck for her”. nellie will reply to oliver like “man i hate that my mom’s from a place where santa isn’t real because she gets so excited about him that she’s just willing to overlook the fact that he has fourteen toes and big red feathers.” and just like that i have shielded myself from offending people who do get the warm fuzzies about christmas time and also established that SOMETHING acting in the capacity of santa is real

very excited to write the christmas special of my monster comedy because I’m jewish and thus immune to the sentimentality that befalls most other morbid writers during december. it’s gonna be called “we wish you a normal christmas” and it’s going to have the absolute cheesiest tackiest most over the top red and green title card and then it’s going to cut immediately to a panel of my jewish deuteragonist standing out front of his house in the mountain november wind freezing his ass off and holding a bucket of pig’s blood while his dad paints it on all the thresholds of their house. to keep santa away, obviously.

Nellie Deirdre O’Malley was born on October 15th. Her year is 1906 and she is incidentally modern. She lives in Mount Bedford, New York, with her adoptive father Gardner, her adoptive mother Cornelia, her sisters Jenny and Bridget, and her adopted sister Samantha. She likes fixing things, playing with her doll, and studying handwriting. When she grows up, Nellie wants to be a teacher for newly arrived immigrants.
