Coming up: Third Place, Brick & Mortar, Village Books
Three book events coming up—Third Place in Lake Forest Park, Brick & Mortar in Redmond, Village Books in Bellingham—and all promise to be wildly different. First up, Weds 18 Oct with Neal Stephenson...
Wednesday, 18 October, 7:00 pm—Third Place Books, Lake Forest Park Last time I was on stage at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, it was with Chuck Tingle. That was a crazy evening: 300+ people screaming and hollering. I can’t really blame them: we were almost an hour late to start because there were ‘technical difficulties,’ that is, a missing dongle meant Chuck couldn’t run his slide show…

Egotober Day 15: Strong
Strength came in many forms, not just physicality. Strength of character, of heart was just as important. Being a hero, Jackie had strength in spades. But it was times like this that tested it, as he stared unflinchingly up into toxic green from where he was holding up the wall of a building to let the inhabitants get outside.
He should’ve known Anti would show up, he always did when there was trouble or things had been too calm. The hero had to grit his teeth in a low growl as the glitch’s face twisted with that demented Cheshire grin of his and he giggled.
“Having a bit o’ trouble hero?~”
Jackie huffed out a breath and he bit his tongue, as much as he wanted to snap at Anti he had more important things to worry about right now. He felt the integrity of the wall crumbling more under his hold, more weight added onto his arms. He exhaled as he heard the bricks hit the ground, the startled shrieks of the crowd from the impacts. The sound of the rescue workers rushing as fast and safe as they could inside to get the civilians out.
He tensed, hair rose on the back of his neck as he heard crackling electricity close to his ear. He shuddered and felt his heart pick up in adrenaline fueled nerves as claws curled around one shoulder.
“Ignorin me now are we? Tsk, tsk, tsk~ Ye know t’at’s a bad idea Jackieboy….I t’ought ye had learned by now. Might have to teach ya anot’er lesson.”
Jackie felt bile crawl up his throat and resisted the urge to gag at the thought of another ‘lesson’. The last one had left him coughing up blood and his ribcage ached in phantom pain. He didn’t move, he didn’t acknowledge Anti. He couldn’t afford to have his focus split-pain lanced down one arm as those deadly claws sunk into his shoulder.
He grit his teeth as muscles spasmed and tightened, he held back the instinct to twist his arm to dislodge them. He dug his fingers into brick and mortar instead in an attempt to stay singular focused. The glitch hummed, the sound brought a smirk to the hero’s mind as the only kind of warning he got.
Then everything lit up in white hot agony.
Jackie clenched his jaw as tight as he could not to scream, his body wanted to convulse but he didn’t let it. He held himself in position as the wall creaked and groaned, bricks tumbled down around him onto the street. His heart skipped beats and stuttered in his chest as his ears rang with the sound of harsh static mixed with panicked screams, the racing footsteps in the building. He felt like his teeth would crack under the pressure as the voltage amped up in response.
Anti didn’t want his attention on anything else but the pain, but him as he struggled to keep his hands still. He couldn’t falter, he couldn’t let go, he had to be strong. His vision swam and began to blur, thoughts fuzzed and tormented. The hero didn’t know how long he could take this, the pain just kept coming and it increased with every second that passed- the force of nature hissed smugly against his skin like it read his mind.
“I can stop Jackie, make all t’e pain go away~ All ye gotta do is one little thing~”
Anything, he’d do anything if it meant the pain stopped. There was a pleased hum that brought to mind a cat with prey before a twisted croon against his ear.
“Say my name Jackieboy~ Say my name and it stops~”
Jackie barely remembered his own name, he couldn’t think- the pain was so bad. His muscles locked in place from his stubbornness not to move, not to scream. His senses all transmitted suffering, torment, the crackling and hissing of the lightning the only sound he heard above his own heartbeat. The hero couldn’t focus…everything started to dim. His eyes fluttered and he caught a flash of feral, wicked neon green…he felt a hand on his cheek, claws softly traced his face and teased the edges of his mask. It felt like his mouth moved on its own and his voice forced itself out barely above a breath. Only heard between the two of them.
“Anti.…”
The pain stopped instantly, he started to sway midair as his body began to go limp. The wall crumbled and collapsed against his body and he hit the street hard, unable to hold himself up. As Jackie slid into the darkness of unconsciousness there was a chuckle among the shouting of civilians and workers who scrambled to his side to tend to him.
“Sleep well hero, see you soon~”

Freddie Green
youtube
You know you're a badass when someone can just say a name, and a musician knows immediately what to do after that. You tell a pianist to play like Art Tatum, and out comes the stride (if they can). You tell a bassist to play like Jaco and you'll get all the notes, like Flea and you'll get the slaps, like Ray Brown and you'll get the greatest foundation a bassist can provide.
For guitarists, there's a few guys like this. One of them is Freddie Green, someone I've written about in the past.
When someone says "Freddie Green" you know exactly what your role is...you're playing quarter notes in swing, and you're responsible for driving the entire band. Listen to the clip above for a minute or two...there's a bassist and a drummer there, but every one of those guys is keyed into Freddie.
It is 100% entirely about the groove. Freddie started when amps weren't really a thing, and never played thru one for any extended period of time. He was the king of the acoustic guitar in jazz. Unrivaled.
Here's another great example...at any point during this song, you'll easily be able to find the telltale *thunk-thunk-thunk-thunk*.
youtube
This is a dying style. Guitarists today have been spoiled rotten by amps and effects, and you're far, FAR more likely to see a guitarist simply not comp for other musicians than you would find one play the Freddie Green style.
Which is silly because when you turn the volume on your guitar down, start thunking away, you can almost feel the bassist and drummer perk up, latch on immedaitely and you're off to the races. Yes, even in 2024. It's just a damn good foundation.
Over the years, a lot of this style's important stuff has been lost. YouTube is lousy with guitarists trying to teach you the style...and teach it wrongly.
Here's an absolutely phenomenal example of how it's done (posted this awhile ago). What I want you to focus on is two things...1. watch his left hand bounce with every chord, this cuts down on sustain and mimics what the bass is doing, and 2. watch his right hand work in a "circular" fashion, which adds dynamics and accentuates the syncopated swing rhythm.
youtube
This is another vid I've posted at least a half dozen times before...
youtube
Of course a North Texas guy knows how to teach a jazz concept. Wouldn't expect anything less.
Again, watch the bounce in his left hand. He doesn't have the same exaggerated circular picking, but he's moving it around a bit. The whole vid is incredible, and goes into a depth you likely don't care about, but this demonstration goes to show how simple but extremely strong fundamentals can be enough for an entire band to build music on top of.
That's the beauty of the Freddie Green style.
And it's a bummer that it's a dying (might be already dead) art.
The whole point of glue is to bring multiple things together, and that's what the rhythm guitar is all about. The bass is the piles of bricks, the piano and melody is the ornamentation and style of the architecture...but those two things need mortar to make the whole thing a solid structure, and that's the role the guitar originally played in ensemble music.
Amps changed things, where the projection of an acoustic guitar mattered much less. Take Wes Montgomery. He's hardly the first to use an amp, but became a worldwide star using his thumb, something that probably wouldn't have been heard past the first few rows without an amplifier. He used his thumb specifically to be quiet and not wake his family up when he'd practice late at night.
Point being, it wasn't long before this style of rhythm guitar became antiquated. Guitarists and their egos demanded to be heard front and center. They wanted to be the violinists or horn players that get adulation in classical and older forms of jazz. An amplifier allowed them to realize this dream.
And there have been great developments in complimentary playing with amps, I won't deny that. Jim Hall and Joe Pass immediately spring to mind. Both those guys used Freddie Green style about half the time though...to great effect.
Here's Jim Hall...for all his brilliant improvisational counterpoint, he'd still rely on Freddie Green style heavily.
youtube
Here's Joe Pass...you don't even need a rhythm section when you can mix in Freddie Green stuff with the walking bass style Joe pioneered.
youtube
This is a roundabout way of saying I'm very pleased that I was exposed to this style of comping at a relatively young age, and have always had it in my quiver.
I'm doing a guitar/saxophone duo gig next week, and have been spending a huge amount of time working on comping and filling up all that space beneath a soloist by myself. Freddie Green style is a huge part of that...stay out of the soloists way until they start cooking, then throw in the counterpoint.
Comping is something that isn't the sole purpose of a modern guitar player. Talented kids are thrust into soloist lights immediately, and their comping almost always suffers into adulthood. Education is almost entirely focused on soloing and melody...not rhythm and harmony, it's natural element.
I truly hope that this style sees a renaissance. I talk to my teachers a lot about this...their students want to learn solos and complex, exotic scales and built bulletproof technique. Which of course is fine. But when a guitarist spends 75% of their time on stage outside of the soloist light, why aren't they spending 75% of their practice time working on ways to fill a role better?
I have a few saxophone playing friends...and I can keep up with their speed, but with a lot more effort. A sax is built for speed, a guitar is built to handle rough harmonic terrain. Even at my best, I still tell them "it's like trying to keep up with a Ferrari in a Jeep."
They always laugh, start noodling fast, and then I ask "play a C major triad," which they of course can't, and we laugh again. But it's a legit point...the guitar is a chordal, polyphonic instrument. Treating it like an instrument that can only play one note at a time is like asking a dog to be a cat. It's just not their natural operating environment.
Guitarists should play like guitarists. Play chords. Lay foundations for soloists. Sure, you can still blaze, and it's important, but the rhythm world of guitar is a rich, envigorating world, and one that I find gets ignored all too much.
Rant over.

How to Choose the Right Insurance Policy for Recording Studio?
A recording studio is not only a structure made of brick and mortar. Instead, it is like a musician’s home. It is filled with expensive gear like microphones, musical instruments, amps, and computers. It is a creative space where artists work their magic. What do you say? Protecting this valuable asset is a must. The right insurance is like a safety cover. It keeps you shielded if something goes wrong. Property insurance can help if there is a fire or flood, and a general liability plan protects you from lawsuits if someone gets hurt on your property. Plus, professional liability coverage is a lifesaver if you make a mistake and a client gets upset. It is like having a backup plan when you need it most.
Understanding Your Needs
Before you start shopping for insurance, take a minute to think about what your studio needs. Look at your gear – guitars, drums, mics, amps, computers – and figure out how much they are worth. This will help you get the right amount of coverage. Also, consider if you own or rent the building. If you rent, your renter's insurance might cover the building itself, but you will still need to protect your stuff inside, like your equipment and furniture. Finally, think about what you do in your studio.
Do you record, mix, or master music? Do you have people working for you? You might be wondering what these questions are being asked. Right? These things will affect how much liability coverage you need. For example, if you have employees, you will probably need workers' compensation to cover them if they get hurt on the job.
So, what if you have one solution for all your music studio protection needs? Yes! For this, you have to get a comprehensive recording studio insurance policy.
Tumblr media
Essential Types of Insurance for Recording Studios
Property protection is like a safety net for your studio. It covers the cost of repairing or replacing your equipment and the studio itself if they are damaged. Look for policies that offer replacement cost coverage, which means you will get the full value of new equipment, not just what it is worth after it has been used. Also, consider business interruption coverage. If your studio cannot operate due to damage, this plan will help cover your lost income. If you are in an area prone to floods or earthquakes, make sure to add these endorsements to your policy.
General liability is another essential piece of coverage. It protects you from lawsuits if someone gets hurt on your property or if your business causes damage. This includes bodily injury, like if a visitor trips and falls, or property damage. For example, if your equipment accidentally damages someone else's property, it will cover you. It also covers advertising injury, which can happen if you say something negative about a competitor or infringe on someone's copyright.
Professional liability, also known as errors and omissions insurance, is crucial for covering mistakes or negligence in your professional services. Finally, if you have employees, a workers' compensation plan is mandatory in many places. It pays for the medical expenses and loss of wages for employees who are hurt on the job.
The good part is - with a dedicated recording studio insurance plan, you will get all of it under one roof. This way, you will not have to handle multiple plans at once. Wow! Right?
Tips for Saving on Insurance
There are several ways to save money on your studio insurance. One option is to bundle your policies. If you have other insurance, like home or auto insurance, with the same company, you might get a discount. However, it may not be worth it due to less coverage. Another way to save is to improve your studio's security. Installing alarms, surveillance systems, and fire extinguishers can show your insurance company that you're taking steps to protect your property, which could lead to lower premiums.

SEO For E-commerce Websites: Strategies To Boost Sales And Visibility
Tumblr media
In today's digital marketplace, having a robust online presence is crucial for the success of any e-commerce business. With millions of websites vying for attention, standing out from the crowd requires more than just an appealing storefront – it demands a strategic approach to search engine optimization (SEO). By implementing effective SEO strategies, e-commerce websites can not only increase their visibility but also drive more traffic and boost sales. Let's explore some key SEO strategies tailored specifically for e-commerce websites.
Keyword Research and Optimization:
Keyword research lays the foundation for successful SEO campaigns. For e-commerce websites, it's essential to identify high-volume, relevant keywords that align with your products and target audience. Utilize keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify popular search terms with commercial intent. Once you've identified your target keywords, strategically integrate them into your website's content, including product descriptions, category pages, and meta tags.
Optimize Product Pages:
Product pages are the bread and butter of e-commerce websites. Optimizing these pages for search engines can significantly impact your visibility and sales. Ensure that each product page is unique, informative, and optimized for relevant keywords. Include high-quality images, detailed product descriptions, customer reviews, and specifications to enhance the user experience and increase conversion rates. Additionally, optimize product titles and meta descriptions with relevant keywords to improve their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). Utilize structured data markup, such as schema.org, to provide search engines with additional context about your products, potentially leading to rich snippets in search results.
Improve Site Speed and Mobile Responsiveness:
Site speed and mobile responsiveness are critical factors in both user experience and SEO. Google prioritizes fast-loading, mobile-friendly websites in its search rankings, making optimization in these areas essential for e-commerce success. Conduct regular performance audits using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to identify and address any issues affecting your site's speed and responsiveness. Optimize images, minify CSS and JavaScript files, leverage browser caching, and consider implementing Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to enhance mobile performance. A fast, responsive website not only improves your search engine rankings but also reduces bounce rates and improves user satisfaction.
Create High-Quality Content:
Content marketing plays a crucial role in e-commerce SEO. In addition to product pages, create high-quality, informative content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience. This could include blog posts, buying guides, tutorials, product comparisons, and customer testimonials. By providing valuable content that educates and engages users, you not only attract organic traffic but also establish your brand as an authority in your niche. Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your content and promote it across social media channels and other online platforms to expand your reach and attract backlinks.
Optimize for Local Search:
For brick-and-mortar e-commerce businesses, optimizing for local search is essential for attracting nearby customers. Ensure that your business information, including name, address, and phone number (NAP), is consistent across all online directories, review sites, and social media platforms. Create a Google My Business profile and optimize it with accurate business information, high-quality images, and positive customer reviews. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and ratings, as they can significantly impact your local search visibility and credibility.
In conclusion, implementing effective SEO strategies and utilizing SEO services in Gurugram is crucial for the success of e-commerce websites. By conducting thorough keyword research, optimizing product pages, improving site speed and mobile responsiveness, creating high-quality content, and optimizing for local search, e-commerce businesses can increase their visibility, attract more traffic, and ultimately boost sales. Investing in SEO is not just about ranking higher in search results – it's about providing a seamless, user-centric experience that drives meaningful engagement and conversions.

Choosing the Perfect Group 26/26R Battery: A Buyer's Guide
Picture this: You're about to embark on a road trip, your car packed, playlists ready, and then... your car refuses to start. Turns out, your battery decided it's the perfect time to retire. Now, if you've ever found yourself puzzled in the battery aisle, wondering which battery fits your car like a glove, you're not alone. Today, we're zoning in on the Group 26/26R battery – a popular choice for many vehicles, offering a mix of performance, reliability, and longevity. Whether you're a car enthusiast or someone who just wants their car to start without a fuss, this guide is tailored just for you. Let's navigate the maze of choosing the perfect Group 26 battery together.
Tumblr media
Understanding Group 26/26R Batteries
Ever wondered what the 'Group' in Group 26 stands for? It's basically a sizing guide – like shoe sizes but for batteries. The Group 26/26R designation tells you about the battery's physical dimensions, terminal locations, and sometimes, the power capacity. It's essential knowledge that ensures you don't end up with a battery that's a square peg for a round hole.
Group 26 Battery: The Basics
Think of the Group 26 battery as the reliable old pair of jeans you reach for, knowing they'll fit perfectly. These batteries are versatile, fitting a wide range of vehicles from cars to small boats, and offer a solid balance between longevity and power.
Group 26R Battery: What Sets It Apart
The 'R' in Group 26R stands for 'Reverse.' Imagine you've got a mirror that flips things around – that's what the Group 26R does with the battery terminals. This slight tweak makes it suitable for vehicles that require this specific configuration.
Identifying Your Needs
What's your battery for? A daily commute, long road trips, or maybe a vehicle that sees more garage time than road? Your usage directly impacts the type of battery that's best for you.
Comparing Battery Specifications
Batteries are like snowflakes – no two are exactly alike. Delving into ampere-hours (Ah), cold cranking amps (CCA), and reserve capacity (RC) helps you understand which battery will hold up best under your specific conditions.
Understanding Battery Lifespan
Not all batteries age like fine wine. Knowing what affects a battery's lifespan – from temperature extremes to driving habits – can help you make a choice that won't leave you stranded.
Maintenance and Care
A battery is like a pet; it thrives on care and attention. Regular checks and maintenance can prevent unexpected failures and extend your battery's life.
Installation Tips
Installing a battery can be a DIY task, but it's not as simple as plugging in a USB cable. A few tips and tricks can make the installation smoother, ensuring your battery starts off on the right foot.
Price vs. Performance
Weighing the cost against the battery's performance is crucial. It's tempting to go for the cheapest option, but like fast food, it might not be the best choice for your health (or in this case, your vehicle's health).
Warranty and Support
A good warranty can be a lifesaver. It's the safety net that catches you if your battery decides to take an early retirement. Understanding warranty terms can save you money and headaches down the line.
Recycling Your Old Battery
When it's time to part with your old battery, remember that it's not just trash. Batteries are recyclable, and disposing of them properly is a small step you can take to help the planet.
Where to Buy
From brick-and-mortar stores to online marketplaces, options abound. But not all sellers are created equal. Knowing where to buy can ensure you get a genuine, high-quality battery at a fair price.
The wisdom of the crowd can be invaluable when shopping for a battery. User reviews and feedback offer real-world insights into how a battery performs under various conditions. It's like getting advice from a thousand friends who've been in your shoes. Look for patterns in reviews to gauge reliability, longevity, and customer service experiences.
Conclusion
Choosing the right Group 26/26R battery doesn't have to be a daunting task. With a bit of knowledge and understanding of your needs, you can select a battery that provides reliable performance, fits your budget, and meets your vehicle’s requirements. Remember, the perfect battery is the one that matches your lifestyle and usage patterns. It's the silent guardian that ensures your journey, whether it's to the grocery store or across the country, is smooth and uninterrupted. So, take your time, do your homework, and choose wisely. Your vehicle (and future self) will thank you for it.

I can't help but look.
The local brick and mortar old stuff audio store has some interesting stuff. Some is very good. Much is high end, and not cheap but a better value compared to new. Some is priced too high relative to quality, but people like certain brands.
It looks like someone stripped a recording studio as there are half a dozen CROWN amplifiers of various sizes at a good price. There are some big powerful units like a 500Watt Pioneer, a 400 Watt Mcintosh and a 400 Watt Bryston. The least expensive of the big guys is the best in the Bryston 4B for 1200 bucks. They are all roughly the same age.
Those ARC amps are still on craiglist. The Classic 60 is down to 1999 from the original 2600. The VT100 is still at 2200. I fall into rationalization mode. The VT100 is all tube. It has a lot of driver tubes. The 60 is hybrid FET-Tube. Interesting the 100 has the same output tube type and number as the 60 and is 66% more powerful. Does it push the tubes that much harder? The VT100 went through several updates after this one was built. Makes me lean more to the 60. Better tube life and less costly to replace?
If I sell my Harman Kardon 12 for 400 bucks and buy the 60 for 1800 I am a dead break even on my equipment purchasing over the years. Or close.
We went out on Saturday and when we got home we fired up the system and had a listen for a couple hours. There is nothing wrong with it. Really. Clean and clear.
The crazy thing is if I were to buy the ARC Amp I would hear differences and like them. I know that. It would not be absolutely better though. A tube amp is usually rated for full power at 1% distortion as is the ARC. The franken-amp is rated at 0.25% at full power. At low power around 1 Watt they would be similar but different harmonics.
I really should move on.

Title: Navigating SEO in 2023: Trends and Strategies for Success
Introduction
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) continues to evolve as a critical digital marketing strategy in 2023. With search engines becoming smarter and user expectations rising, staying ahead of the SEO curve has never been more important. In this blog post, we'll delve into the latest SEO trends and strategies that businesses need to embrace for success in the ever-changing digital landscape of 2023.
Voice Search Optimization
The rise of voice-enabled devices has transformed the way people search for information. As voice search gains prominence, optimizing your content for voice queries becomes essential. Focus on conversational keywords and long-tail phrases that mimic natural speech patterns. FAQs and featured snippets are excellent tools to cater to voice search queries and provide concise, relevant answers.
BERT and AI-Powered Algorithms
Search engines are utilizing advanced AI algorithms like Google's BERT to better understand context and semantics. As a result, content quality and relevance are more critical than ever. Create in-depth, authoritative content that addresses user intent comprehensively. Understanding user behavior and crafting content that aligns with their needs will lead to higher rankings.
User Experience (UX) and Core Web Vitals
Google's Core Web Vitals have become a ranking factor, emphasizing the importance of a seamless user experience. Page load speed, interactivity, and visual stability directly impact how users engage with your website. Prioritize mobile optimization, reduce unnecessary elements, and leverage browser caching to enhance your site's performance and user satisfaction.
Video and Visual Search
Visual search technology is gaining momentum, allowing users to search using images or videos. To tap into this trend, optimize your visual content by using descriptive filenames, alt text, and structured data. Create engaging video content and optimize video metadata to improve your chances of appearing in video search results.
E-A-T and Authority Building
Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-A-T) remain pivotal for SEO success. Showcase your expertise by regularly publishing well-researched, accurate content. Establish authority through backlinks from reputable sources and guest posting on industry-related websites. Engage with your audience on social media and respond to comments to build trust.
Mobile-First Indexing and AMP
Mobile-first indexing has become the default for Google, making mobile optimization non-negotiable. Ensure your website is responsive and offers a seamless experience across all devices. Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) can further boost your site's loading speed, enhancing mobile usability and search rankings.
Local SEO and Google My Business
For brick-and-mortar businesses, local SEO continues to be vital. Claim and optimize your Google My Business listing, ensuring accurate NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) information. Encourage reviews and ratings to improve your local search visibility and build trust among local customers.
Content Clusters and Topic Authority
Creating content clusters around a core topic demonstrates your website's authority in a specific niche. Develop pillar content that covers a broad subject and link it to related cluster content. This interlinking strategy signals to search engines that your site is a comprehensive resource on the topic, boosting your chances of ranking higher.
Conclusion
In 2023, SEO has evolved into a multifaceted strategy that requires a holistic approach. By embracing voice search optimization, AI-powered algorithms, exceptional user experience, visual content, E-A-T principles, mobile-first indexing, local SEO, and content clusters, businesses can position themselves for success in the ever-competitive digital landscape. Staying informed about the latest trends and adapting your SEO strategy accordingly will help you navigate the complexities of SEO and achieve long-lasting online visibility and success.
