After the excitement of the finale of the 6 Nations last weekend, it seemed an apt time to post this particular twicket

I haven’t been to Twickenham for donkeys, but I went several times back then. Remarkably this was the only time I ever paid to watch a match at Twickers.

Before this, we didn’t need to. We had a fool proof way to bunk in. It was the Ying to the Yang of our sophisticated butcher's white coat routine which concurrently gained us free access to Wimbledon Tennis. We were the Posh sports grifters  

I'm actually not a rugger bugger though. We didn't play it at school. I barely knew the rules, other than you had to throw the ball behind you. I only got into it when I went to college. Brian Moore, the BBC pundit, journalist and legendary England hooker was in the year below me at Nottingham. 'Pitbull' of course went on to built a reputation as one of the finest and certainly the hardest players of that or any era. He was my route into appreciating the brilliance of the game.

I was captain of the Law Society football team, and on an occasional Sunday morning, if we were short of players, he might be willing to fill in at right back. Predictably he was a very physical football player, in the Norman Hunter ‘bites yer legs’ mould

While at Uni, Brian started to play for Nottingham Rugby Club, and me and Rhino and others used to go and watch him ruck at home matches on a Saturday and even some away games. This pastime invariably involved an all-day drinking session, eating of pies and/or sausage, merciless piss-taking rugby songs, occasional drinking/ throwing of urine.

We witnessed first hand his remarkable sporting career blossom culminating with his first cap at Twickenham v Scotland. We all felt very proud to have shared that journey. That game was the first time that Swing Low Swing Chariot was sung on the terraces. I'm pretty likely they would have needed to ‘carry me home’ that evening

Back then Rugby Union was an amateur game. Pitbull was so dedicated to his legal quest  so while playing Rugby at the highest level, that he persevered with the  six-year studying to become a solicitor until and then after a few years he bizarrely gave it all up to become a nail technician and qualified manicurist with a salon in Soho

I don't recall this match at all other than the fact that it cost me money to attend.  It was the first game after the covert operation ended. I tell a lie I do recall witnessing the Fijian Rugby Union Team perform their little pre-match dance, the Cibi their version of the Haka. Tongue poking, self-flagellation and grunting. Same kind of thing as the Kiwis.

So I’ll explain our cunningly entrance gaining ploy. It involved nothing more than a small oblong paper badge stating “Payne and Gunter”. Payne and Gunter are a quintessentially English Hospitality company established in 1776. A college friend of ours did some summer work for them and gave us their badge that he "forgot" to return. He thought it might come in handy as Payne and Gunter were the Rugby Union official caterers for England home games

We would take it in turns to purposefully walk up to the entrance wearing the badge, perhaps carrying a carefully chosen prop, such as a cardboard box (empty of course) or some Coleman’s mustard. One needed to give the impression that you were a hard working society caterer on an urgent restocking mission and that a riot by condiment deprived rugby fans may ensue if we were not allowed immediate access. You’d be let straight through. They wouldn’t even look in the box. It could have been Russian nerve agent for all they knew. The badge appeared to have quasi-magical powers and gave the wearer a Jaqen H'ghar from Game of Thrones shapeshifting quality.

Then that dutiful P&G "employee" would then go to a pre-determined point, namely some mesh perimeter wire fencing behind the outside bar and when the prized badge was surreptitiously passed through the fence to one of the other aspiring P&G employees who would be hiding in a bush adjoining the mesh. The process would continue until we would all get in, whereupon would then get pissed and then bundle past the security and stand on the terraces to watch the game.

The hustle worked like clockwork for several years, until someone lost the badge! Now, who could that have been? !!
