Recently read Hatchet and I’m absolutely obsessed with it 🥰 got really inspired and had to make some fan-covers! The story is extremely tense, keeping you on your toes until the very end, and Brian himself is a very likeable character that not only learns the ways of the forest, but builds a type of spiritual connection with it, respects its power and the power of the creatures that inhabit it.

i just watched cry of the wild in my honors english i class a few hrs ago. i've gotta be honest.... it was pretty bad for the most part.

for one, i wasn't even planning on watching this movie today. i just decided to come to be nice. at first i thought i was gonna love this film... but sadly i did not.

two, brian acts very, very dumb for most of the movie. he almost gets himself killed by a bear, he eats berries that he doesn't even know are poisonous or not, he calls a literal caterpillar "sushi", doesn't even know what the fuck a raccoon is, etc.

book brian was much smarter than this so-called "brian". hell, even in the beginning of the book he was much smarter and resourceful. therefore, i think cry of the wild sucks.

oh well. at least brian gets smarter near the end of the movie. sadly, i still don't like him so far.

CHARACTERS/CHARACTERIZATION:

Brian Robenson- The thirteen-year-old protagonist in the novel. 

Brian's Mother- Brian's mother wants to get a divorce from Brian's father, as she is seeing another man, whom Brian does not know, but calls "the man with short blond hair." 

Brian's Father- Brian's father does not want a divorce from his mother. He is unaware that she is having an affair, and her wish for a divorce perplexes him.

Terry- Brian's good friend back in New York.

Jim or Jake- The pilot of the Cessna plane. 

The man with short blond hair- Brian's mother is seeing the man with the short blond hair. 

Mr. Perpich- Brian's old English teacher.

Uncle Carter- Brian's uncle.  

SUMMARY:

Thirteen-year-old New York City boy named Brian Robeson is the lone person on a small aircraft traveling to Canada to visit his father. Despite of his parents' recent divorce, Brian still go to his father to spend the summer with him. But before Brian can focus on his miserable family situation, the pilot, suddenly has a heart attack and passes away. Brian is able to crash-land the plane into a lake and escape with just minor injuries. The hatchet his mother had given him before he leave and ride the plane is still fastened to his belt. Brian understands that in order to survive until help arrives, he needs to find food and shelter. Brian discovers some berries, builds a shelter out of tree branches and a cave Brian continues to hope that help will arrive at any moment. However, Brian didn't see the rescue plane when it does fly overhead. But as time goes by, Brian regains his positive outlook and grows even more resilient. He builds a bow and arrow, discovers how to fish, learns to hunt birds and bunnies, and fortifies his home to withstand the elements. Suddenly, a skunk and then a moose attack him. Brian also deal with a cyclone, as if eating raw turtle eggs and avoiding wild creatures weren't enough. It turns out that the tornado stirs up the situation to such an extent that the wrecked plane, which had been at the lake's bottom, now protrudes from the water. Brian is able to retrieve the pilot's emergency survival kit. A sleeping bag, a compass, cooking utensils, lighters, matches, bandages, and a rifle are all contained in Brian's pack. An emergency transmitter is also in the backpack, but Brian sets it aside after turning the switch on it a few times and not hearing anything. He assumes that the plane disaster damaged it. But, it is not broken. Unexpectedly, a plane flies overhead before landing on the lake. The pilot informs Brian that he has detected the emergency transmitter signal. Brian is saved at last.

MORAL LESSON:

The moral lesson of this story is that every challenge that you may face you should not give up and do your best. It is important we stay strong in trying times because it is the time where chances and the whole world is trying and testing our capability to survive.
