During a brief scene in Tales from the Borderlands, Athena shows Fiona some of the expanded capabilities of her pistol, teaching her how to make use of its elemental capabilities to solve puzzles. While mechanically a very simple addition, by spending a full scene on this moment, the game is able to bring it back during high tension, timed sequences later on with no introduction. Even if players make a mistake during these moments, the game has ensured that they are aware of the new mechanic, and that they should be able to discern its use in future point-and-click adventure moments.

MCSM Season 2 Creative Team Reference Post
Hey everyone! I wanted to do a post laying out the Creative Team that puts MCSM together with links to where to find them on the ol’ Internet. :) It’s worth noting that this still doesn’t begin to include the amazing artists, programmers, technical people, and producers who help put our game together, but these are the people with whom I work on the daily --
Creative Leads:
These are the people who guide the creative vision of the series - If you were to mash the three of us together it would be roughly equivalent to the showrunner on a TV show.
Eric Stirpe (Me) - Lead Writer. Responsible for dialogue, characters, tone. I wrote episode 1 this season and lots of episodes last season. Brian Freyermuth - Lead Narrative Designer. Responsible for gameplay, interactivity, and branching storylines. Designer for episode 1 this season and lots of episodes last season. Jon Stauder - Lead Director. Responsible for the look, feel, and sound of the series on the whole. Also our grand poobah of action scenes. Directed episode 1, directed episodes 3 and 5 last season.
Writers:
The team that works under yours truly to write all the dialogue and help shape the story.
Meredith Ainsworth - (not on social media) Writer for episode 2, also helping write eps 3-5 and a bit of writing on ep 1. Adam Douglas - Writer for episode 3. Came up with all those hilarious prisoners. Nicole Martinez - Writer for episode 4. Also wrote all the Xara stuff in episode 3 and is helping write stuff on episode 5. Adam Miller - Writer for episode 5. Also did some writing on episodes 2 and 3. Doug Lieblich - Writer who has been helping out across the whole season. Hannah Macleod - Creative Development Assistant, started writing on episode 3 and has been helping write across eps. 4 and 5.
Narrative Designers:
The folks responsible for laying out the interactivity and choices of an episode and doing a lot of the mapping of callbacks, conditional content, etc.
Matt Allmer - Designer for episode 2, also did a lot of work on episode 3 and has been helping out on 4 and 5. Steve McManus - Designer for episodes 3 and 5. Also designed a bunch of stuff last season. Juan Vaca - Designer for episode 4. Mandy Benanav - Designer who has been helping out across the entire season. Andrew Baker - [not on social media] Designer who has been helping out across the entire season. Michael McCormick - [not on social media] Designer who has been helping out across the entire season.
Directors:
Responsible for taking all the dialogue and gameplay and actually putting it together into fun compelling content, often directors are responsible for some of players’ favorite moments and scenes. We’re lucky to have a great slate of em.

Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two: Eight Hidden Details in the New Trailer

Hey PlayStation fans — greetings from Telltale! The second season of Minecraft: Story Mode — which we’re once again creating in collaboration with our partners at Mojang — is coming to PS4 on July 11, so we sat down with three of the project’s lead developers to gain some behind-the-scenes insights into the references, easter eggs, and teases hidden in the new trailer. Watch the trailer above, then dive into the full breakdown below…
Gone But Not Forgotten – You may have noticed we have a new animal friend (frenemy?) in Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two: Lluna the llama. “When we heard that Mojang was adding llamas, that was it,” says Lead Designer Brian Freyermuth. “It was perfect. An animal that could be cute and nasty, all at the same time.” After Reuben the pig’s…er, incident in the first season, however, the team took the introduction of a new animal companion very seriously. “We were unsure if it was too soon or not, and we didn’t want it to feel like we were just replacing Reuben,” says Season Director Jonathan Stauder. As part of their effort to ease the transition, the team created a memorial in town and included an optional pig pageant. You can see some of these pageant-worthy pigs in the trailer.
Glitches?! – That big Sea Temple you see uses some custom textures not actually found in Minecraft proper because it was built by season two’s larger-than-life villain: the Admin. “We worked with Mojang to pull stuff from old versions of Minecraft [including] glitches and exploits that people used while building, like glowing obsidian and floating water,” says Lead Writer Eric Stirpe. You may notice some re-skinned creatures in there as well.
A New Adventuring Duo – Adventuring and business partners Jack and Nurm have been a hit internally, so it’s nice to see them in action in the trailer here. Nurm answers the question “What role would a villager play in Story Mode?” but where did Jack come from exactly? “Jack is our version of Kurt Russell,” says Stirpe, “and Jack and Nurm are our very own Han and Chewie.” Freyermuth elaborates, “I’m a huge fan of Big Trouble in Little China, so the thought of a character like Jack Burton in Minecraft was amazing.”
Your World is Expanding – In Jack and Nurm’s adventure emporium, there’s a particular square of the world map that’s conspicuously missing. So what’s the secret behind that mysterious square? We tried to get Eric Stirpe to give us some spoilers, but all he would say is this: “We explored the Order of the Stone in the first season, and now we’re going back even further into the foundational secrets of our world.” Ominous.
Beacontown Easter Eggs – Jesse’s home base, Beacontown, is jam-packed with easter eggs and references to later plotlines, including a very special easter egg that’s just off-screen during the Beacontown shot in the trailer. “There are two cat houses in Beacontown that our Art Director, Mark Hamer, made with his daughter and directly imported into the town,” says Stirpe. Freyermuth adds, “The Beacontown area is something I’m particularly proud of. I bet most players are going to see different things every time they play through it. Keep a look out for a certain familiar building from all the way back in episode one of season one.”
Hidden Parrots – You might notice a lot of parrots flying around throughout season two of Minecraft: Story Mode. Jonathan Stauder loved putting bats into the first season and made it his personal mission to include at least one parrot in the second. Once our dev team learned of his mission, they decided start adding a few… extra parrots. Like, a lot of extra parrots. See how many you can spot in the trailer alone (hint: check the rafters in Jack and Nurm’s shop)!
YouTubers IRL (Sorta) – In case you didn’t hear when we first announced season two, Minecraft YouTubers Stampy Cat and stacyplays have returned! You can spot them in Beacontown in the trailer alongside their very own custom houses. “We had a great collaborative process with Stampy and Stacy in making their houses,” says Stirpe. “We asked them to write a paragraph about their building trademarks, then our art team made mock-ups for them, and we all got to work on the designs together.”
New Outfits for the Gang – It’s been a few years since the events of the first season, so when we see the Order of the Stone again, they have some updated outfits. “Petra’s old armor has been starting to basically break down, so she’s cobbled together different pieces here and there,” Freyermuth comments. “I love Petra’s new armor because you get to see this really cool combination that reflects both her mercenary ways in the first episode of season one and the iconic Order armor we gave her later on.”

Can I just say I absolutely love MCSM, haha I honestly can't wait for the next episode and love how far season two is coming along. It's different than the last one and I absolutely love the new characters (mostly Radar, loving the while Lukas, Jesse and Radar thing coming along). But, may I ask how are you guys able to get the episodes done so fast? It's honestly impressive and surprising.
Aww, well thank you so much!! Radar means a lot to me so it makes me soso happy to see people liking that little cupcake so much. We just had Radar’s voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, in the VO booth yesterday recording episodes 3 and 4 and, man… Can’t wait for you guys to see it. Sad moments, hilarious moments, adorable moments… The episode 3 and 4 teams are doing great work.
Which leads me to your next question!
To get episodes out so quickly requires a lot of crazy coordination by our production team, hard work by everyone involved, and some people being pulled in a million directions at once, haha.
The Telltale process is kind of like an assembly line, with every episode going through approximately this schedule:
Outline/Premise: Pitching the episode as a 3-5 page document. Ideas for big choices are in there, character arcs, big moments… at this point only the episode writer and episode narrative designer (they’re who you see in the opening credits as “Telltale Story By:”) are staffed to the episode and they get notes from people like the lead writer (me) lead designer (Brian Freyermuth), lead director (Jon Stauder), and all the executives. This phase usually takes 2-4 weeks.
Once the outline is in good enough shape to be approved, the episode is officially goes into pre-production. This means the art team starts to take the ideas that have been described in the outline and turn them into the sets, props, and characters that will be needed.
Meanwhile, the writer and narrative designer will then start to actually write the episode. The creation of the story is a split duty between the two of them - They effectively co-write the episode, with the narrative designer’s job being to make sure it’s fun and exciting to play while the writer’s job is to make sure the comedy, character, and heart are all still there. They then have 2-3 weeks to get to…
Table Read: The first big test of the episode, this is where we get a ton of people together into one room, assign parts to different members of the team, and then read through the script like a play while a designated “player” makes the choices. (I always play Jesse, heh.) This is usually the first time people like the marketing team experience the episode so they can start figuring out marketing strategy, etc. ahead of time. Lotta notes from leads and execs again, and this is when things start to really heat up. Around this time is when the episode’s director comes on board and they become the third piece of the episode lead puzzle - working very closely with the writer and designer to make sure they’re all making something they’re excited about. The director usually has revisions they want to make to make things more visually exciting, better pacing, etc. so it’s very important that writing/design/direction all work well together. 
See, at this point is where things really start to heat up. By now, there’s enough rough art for the director to start planning the episode with their lead cinematic artist, figuring out how things are going to look, sound, feel… While that’s happening, the writing and design team is frantically getting the script put together so that they can get the script to the VO director to get recorded by the actors so that the animators and cinematic artists can start using the voice actually put the episode together.
Oh! And did I mention that this is the point when the next episode starts working on its outline/premise? Yeah. That means art is starting on the next episode, the next episode team has to start outline, etc.
All told, post-table read there’s usually 2-3 weeks until…
First Playable: This is another big one. The first time voice is in, we’re seeing the art, everything is roughly (sometimes very roughly) animated and put together… This is the first time we put a controller in someone else’s hands and let them experience the episode. Lotta feedback again from leads and execs. Right around this time, the previous episode (if there is one) has come out, so people have a good understanding of how fans are feeling about characters, plots, themes, etc. and that helps inform feedback. (Example: Maybe fans REALLY loved a character in ep 1 that isn’t in ep 2 at all - they’ll get feedback to adjust accordingly)
Annnnyhow. Director/Writer/Designer then need to team up and take the feedback, take about a week to get in revisions to the script so about another week can be spent in the VO booth, and then it’s like 4 weeks to finish it, package it up, and send it out the door so that you lovely people can play it. There are a couple other steps in there that start to get a bit more technical but hopefully that gives you a good idea of how things overlap. :)

MCSM Season 2 Tonal Comparisons/Inspirations
Whenever a new writer starts working on MCSM Season 2, this is the viewing list that myself and lead designer Brian Freyermuth give as “homework” to get them in the right mindset for writing on the project.
When I was assigned to lightly reboot the tone of MCSM Season 1 after the Witherstorm story arc, a lot of these served as the inspiration for the new tone, and now as we go into season 2 this is the stuff we continue to aspire towards.
(Please note, none of these are inspiration for specific plot points, storylines, or characters - just the feel and tone.)
