Frank Iero & the Patience

Most fittingly opening on a Thursday night at The Paramount for the band Thursday, Frank Iero & The Patience lifted the crowd to its feet with a heart pounding set of songs from the band’s two albums, as well as adding a few surprises.

A talented and natural front man. Frank Iero, has stepped out of the shadows of his prior famed band, My Chemical Romance, where he played rhythm guitar and provided backing vocals. Now with two solid albums behind him, he has proven to be a true powerhouse performer!

  Joining him on stage was Evan Nestor on guitar, Matt Olsson on drums and Alex Grippo on bass.  Together on stage, the four push live music to where it should be, with a focus on the high energy and the in-the-moment performance.  Nothing says this better than Frank’s line in “Dear Percocet, I Don’t Think We Should See Each Other Anymore”, when he buzzes, “I wanna live for a scream not a screen.”

Of course, he is digging for the crowds screams rather than their iPhone screens, which have taken most audiences out of the live feel. Although he uses this line to convey this message, nothing tells it better than the full vigor and blistering performance of Frank Iero & the Patience.

Adding to the evening’s setlist was probably one of the best cover versions of The Beatles “Helter Skelter”. Frank’s angry vocals add to the emotional disorder/confusion the song is supposed to convey. Backed by the bands sweaty, nasty rock and roll makes this an unruly number—- the way the Fab Four meant it to be.

The show was one of three year-end performances by the band that we were lucky enough to catch! Looking so forward to what Frank Iero & the Patience does in 2018!

MANK part en tête d’une course aux Oscars bien bizarre

Je me suis réveillé tantôt, j'ai parti la cafetière, puis en checkant Twitter, je me suis dit: "Ah oui, c'est vrai, les nominations des Oscars ont été dévoilées." 

 C’est la première année depuis une éternité où je ne suis pas au poste au moment où les nominations des Oscars sont annoncées. Je l’ai déjà dit, mais je suis assez désinteressé cette année par cette course aux remises de prix où sont honorés des films que presque personne n’a pu voir sur grand écran, pandémie oblige. 

Oui, il y a d’excellents films en lice, comme Nomadland, Sound of Metal et Promising Young Woman. Il y en a aussi que je vais essayer de voir prochainement, Minari notamment. Mais je n’ai pas l’impression qu’il y ait de gros titres qui ont enflammé la planète cinéma comme par exemple Parasite, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood ou même le divisif Joker l’an dernier.

J’ai vu Mank de David Fincher sur Netflix, j’ai trouvé ça correct, mais c’est loin d’être un film marquant pour moi. Je reviens quand même sur Nomadland, un de mes préférés de 2020 (même s’il ne sortira techniquement pas en salle au Québec avant avril 2021) - ce sera un bon moment de voir Chloé Zhao probablement remporter l’Oscar de la Meilleure réalisation. Il y a plein d’actrices et d’acteurs talentueux qui sont en nomination. Je serais content que Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross soient récompensés pour la musique de Soul. Je trouve ça plate que TENET de Christopher Nolan ait presque été complètement ignoré.

Mais dans l’ensemble, je suis assez indifférent face à tout ça. Je vais sûrement regarder le gala quand même, en espérant que ce ne soit pas un désastre avec des fenêtres Zoom comme les Golden Globes...

T'was the night before the Oscars...

Here we are again. The final stab at a decent award show ceremony amidst a global pandemic. I'm not getting my hopes up after the Golden Globes and SAG zoom calls, in fact I've read very little about the upcoming ceremonies since they announced they would not be using zoom... and then promptly reversed that decision.

It would seem no matter how late we delay the Oscars, I still find myself the night before the show scrambling to watch all the Best Picture nominees. It also hasn't slipped my mind all the promises I'd made to discuss my top films of 2020 and the things I would not have seen if not for this global catastrophe. Having had a number of conversations with fellow cinephiles, many have also found themselves very unenthused about award season contenders, dramatic pictures or anything with heavier content so to speak, or even movies in general. The struggle to concentrate is real.

I'm going to get right into my list of predictions with the caveats that I have yet to see Sound of Metal, and I have to watch the second half of Judas and the Black Messiah after I hit 'post' here. You will find as we go through, there's lots more I haven't seen.

Best Actor in a Leading Role - very strong contenders all around in this category, every one of them (I'm sure I'll have the same reaction about Riz Ahmed) made me say "holy shit" in amazement out loud

Olivia Colman (“The Father”) - another potentially unpopular comment... while I think Olivia Colman is one of the best actresses and most delightful people in existence, given her range and talent I don't she particularly excelled in The Father to make it an Oscar-worthy performance.

Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”)

Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”) - Will win/should win

Best Animated Feature Film - I only saw one film so I have no basis for comparison

10 Things You Should Know About NOMA's Sculpture Garden Just in Time for the LOVE in the Garden Party

It’s time for one of my favorite parties of the year: LOVE in the Garden. NOMA’s annual fall garden party, held in the museum’s magical Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, will take place on September 22, and you can still purchase your tickets.

This is such a fun party, with dinner and cocktails provided by New Orleans’ finest chefs and bartenders and dancing under the stars until midnight. I never miss it, but sometimes I get caught up in all the fun and forget that I’m actually in one of the foremost sculpture gardens in the world, among some pretty incredible works of art.

So, to prep for the event, I’m sharing 10 facts you should really know about the sculpture garden at NOMA before you go. Better yet, use these fascinating tidbits as conversation pieces at the garden party!

1. The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden opened in 2003 with fifty works of art by modern and contemporary artists of international renown, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, George Segal, and Louise Bourgeois

2. Today, the garden boasts 64 works of art

3. Known as connoisseurs of modern and contemporary sculpture, Sydney and Walda Besthoff founded the garden to allow the public to enjoy art in a contemplative and idyllic Louisiana environment

4. Planning for the garden was a collaborative effort between the Besthoffs, The Besthoff Foundation, the City Park Improvement Association and NOMA. 

5. City Park provided a site adjacent to the museum at the cost of one dollar per year for one hundred years. 

6. Planning of the garden, by architects Lee Ledbetter of Lee Ledbetter Architects, New Orleans, and landscape architect Brian Sawyer of Sawyer/Berson, New York, revolved around preserving the original, extraordinary qualities of the City Park landscape as much as possible. 

7. Groundbreaking for the garden occurred on June 29, 2001. Construction took two and a half years. 

8. The garden opened with fifty sculptures donated by the Besthoff Foundation, combined with nine works from the Museum’s permanent collection. 

9. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden features works by French, British, Italian, Japanese, Israeli, and American artists. In one quick visit, you can take in French Sculpture from the turn of the century, British Abstraction, Surrealism, post-WWII Italian Art, Pop Art, Geometric Abstraction, and art from the turn of the twenty-first century. 

10. Proceeds from LOVE in the Garden 2017 help to guarantee the future stability of the museum and programs that are vital to the New Orleans community, and beyond.

Philly's Parkway Corp. seeks $5 million grant for Center City office tower

Parkway Corporation, a parking lot operator with extensive downtown real estate holdings, wants state redevelopment dollars to underwrite the construction of an 18-story office tower near 23rd and Market streets.

The Philadelphia-based company applied for a $5 million state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant for a project called 23rd + Market, according to documents filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Parkway’s application describes a 331,500 square-foot Class A office building with a green roof, public commercial space and 50-spot underground garage. The project would be LEED certified and feature “an ergonomically designed office layout, fostering productivity and collaboration among workers.”

The development would replace a surface lot currently operated by Parkway on the site. The lot spans nearly a full city block on the south side of Market Street.

Long known exclusively for its operation of surface parking lots, Parkway has recently begun to cash in on its Center City holdings –– converting asphalt expenses into starting points for downtown office and condo towers with desirable addresses, like 1706 Rittenhouse Square.

Parkway Corporation VP Brian Berson said it was too early to discuss details about the project.

“We’re not really in a position where we’re going to be able to comment,” he said.

The RACP is sometimes been referred to by critics as a source of “walking around money” for state lawmakers eager to host ribbon-cuttings and wield political influence in their respective districts. Successive governors, like Tom Corbett and Tom Wolf, have pledged to increase oversight for what some have described as an intensely political grant process that generates little economic activity.
