Brazilian ghouls✨ Part 1

(This is more like history and miscegenation lesson)

And this is a very, very long post

I'm really bad at this kind of thing (I'm actually not smart), but I really like my country and ghouls, soo, here we go

• Ok, Let's start with vital points, Brazil was a major distributor of coffee throughout the world for a long time and thanks to colonization our culture is extremely mixed, as most families have several descendants from different nationalities such as: Portugal, Africa, Japan, Italy, Germany, Dutch, Lebanon, between others, and of course a very rich and explored culture and diverse villages of original peoples that to this day are treated as if they did not exist

• Anyway, my main point is that here, it is extremely common to have multiple ethnicities and nationalities mixed in the blood. And this would be no different with ghouls

• I'm almost certain that the population of mixed-race ghouls in Brazil would be higher than anywhere else on the planet.

• First, following @tg-headcanons 's headcanons, before colonization, some indigenous villages which were found far from the coast and more in the center of Brazil (Jes) were able to coexist peacefully with ghouls, and since that time, there were already mixed relationships

• The villages were independent of each other, so there were also ghoul-only villages

• As Brazil greatly developed planting and agriculture, that the original people were capable of making recipes, using feasts from bodies collected in battles with rival villages, and specific recipes that used methods to make tubers edible for ghouls, such as cooking in blood, they also used breast milk, bones, and locks of hair in recipes or in consumption

• Brazil had a subspecies of ghoul "Suú-suúTa-ta" (from Brazilian Tupi, something like "fire chewer", capable of throwing the kagune on fire, which generated countless legends such as "boi tata" (a giant fire snake) and the curupira (the protector of the forest, a boy whose hair catches fire and his feet are inverted, he runs through the woods) These ghouls did not live in communities, but roamed the forests and lived in solitude, which ended up making them extinct.

• The native ghouls' hunting method was very native, hunting ghouls could spend hours or days on top of trees, waiting for prey, they imitated Brazilian animals, such as the jaguar (onça pintada), Attacking with a single bite to the base of the skull and crushing, or like anacondas (sucuri) or boa constrictors (jibóia), wrapping the prey with the help of the kagune and crushing the bones

• I think the bikaku would be the most common kagune in Brazil, the Ukakus in second place, would use the crystals as arrows

• Some ghouls could ingest sugar cane instead coffee

• Ghouls had a less developed language, mostly just sounds and limited words, without advanced grammatical training, the hunting ghouls were even quieter

• The ghouls attacked people from rival tribes, and the mixing of species began with marriages and unions between villages, to establish peace.

• These unions were usually with a female farmer or healer, and a hunting ghoul that was normally integrated into the village

• When a pregnancy occurred in these unions, there were rituals and great expectations, women began to consume meat that previously was only served to their husband and therefore, many of them discovered how to integrate the human and ghoul diet together.

• Crossbreeds between ghouls and humans were usually very strong and respected and were also influenced to procreate, which led to the beginning of miscegenation between humans and ghouls.

• Then, we have colonization, many African ghouls were brought along with others on slave ships, and many European ghouls took the opportunity to escape hunting and burning in the Europe and they came in caravels

• As colonization progressed, native ghouls were burned or drowned, those who did not have ties and families with humans hid in the dense forests of the Amazon

• European ghouls usually looked for ghoul slaves as well, (but they bought human slaves to eat) and were also surprised by the presence of half-ghouls

• African ghouls and native Brazilian ghouls used to always find each other strange, but when they were subjugated together, the ghouls began to learn about each other and the different cultures

• Miscegenation advances with ghouls, mixing not only nationalities, culture, but also subspecies, hunting methods

• Cuisine also advances, European ghouls were able to ingest only coffee, native Brazilian ghouls were able to ingest sugar cane and tubers prepared specifically for ghoul consumption and African ghouls could ingest some types of peppers or beans

• Natural mestizos had even fewer dietary restrictions, however, their kagunes developed less

• When people began to mix, European, native or African ghouls, the characteristics of African mimics became increasingly common, many European ghouls wanted their heirs to inherit the strong jaw and Brazilian bikaku

• However, the European elite stopped, or at least tried, with the mixture, when their heirs did not inherit Brazilian characteristics, at least not the ones they wanted, it just created good old eugenics and didn't stop other ghouls from banding together despite ethnic and genetic differences

• Little by little the ghoul community in the country increased, as the centuries passed, Brazilian culture shaped itself and became increasingly welcoming, ghouls were not just monsters, but part of the community and society

• European ghouls stopped living in the shadows, assuming themselves as ghouls when they achieved great purchasing power, this occurs in the 19th century during Brazilian independence

• Mestizo, African and native ghouls formed a strong alliance and built a culture, along with the enslaved humans at the time

• Many enslaved humans saw ghouls (except European ghouls) as heroes, since many ghouls rebelled and killed the plantation owners

• Ghouls were not excluded from Brazilian culture, but included in its daily life, culture, history, religion, folklore

• As more people immigrated to Brazil and ghouls from all over the world began to learn about the country of coffee and the strong, mixed-race ghouls, many ghouls from different countries started moving to Brazil

• This happened in the 19th century, when Brazil achieved "independence" from Portugal and became a monarchy (with the fucking Portuguese family in charge), It was an important century, Brazil experienced the success of coffee farming, abolished slave labor and received several immigrations

• With all these changes, the ghoul community grew even more and the mestizos had the chance to explore their kagunes, managing to develop them

• Almost every Brazilian has a relative who is a mestizo or ghoul

• Ghouls are common in Brazil, they are part of Brazilian blood, however, like any minority, many of them still suffer from prejudice and stigma

Well, that's the general picture of how ghouls developed in Brazil, there are probably errors and inconsistencies, but I'm refraining

On the left is the Dolphin Delighter, as in it is a magical talking fey "dolphin" that delights others. It likes to telepathically sing sea shanties and cause dazzling bursts of healing light. It also can teleport as it leaps, and is around 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8 m) long.. as @valvadis pointed out, it seems likely that it's based on the Boto Cor De Rosa of Brazilian folklore. Shapeshifters that show up to parties, play music/dance/drink/fuck, and disappear into the night. Which does fit with the the "Fey" designation of the D&D version.

On the right, the Maurezhi, the ghoul demon born of corrupted elves!  6 ft (1.8 m) tall, with telepathy and claws that paralyze! Thier whole deal is that if they eat a body they acquire its memories. If it's fresh enough, they take its form as well. Its power too if it was stronger than them. So there's a decent chance that when you happen upon them they'll actually look like just a normal person!

Now then those are mostly designs i stopped working on for many reasons and i can barely find good images of them now cause theyre not even on my computer. Maybe i revisit them in the future but who knows

First something i tried together w the beach fan design- literally a gamer inspired line lol called gamer ghouls. i hate how drac turned out but the heart-shaped switch is something cool- i like frankie’s outfit and ghoulia is my fave here.  its funny cause something i always think when i make g3 designs is ‘’how can i include drac in this’’ cause realistically my line of thinking is ‘’would these sell’’ and drac sells. i also try to keep in mind materials and how well the items would perform as toys too. drac is hideous here tho.  the ghouls drinking monster was super funny in my head

this is a rough one. its for g1, i came up w the concept talking to an old friend, bonita and venus were her favorite dolls and i came up with the concept of a cybergoth inspired Bonita doll and a more slick also cyber inspired figure for venus (shes barely sketched there).

we had LOTS of creative differences (i came with a color pallete much, much different from that since i was inspired by cybergoth, focusing on neon and dark colors) and specially after some personal stuff i just gave up. i still like the concept but i cant really stand working with a concept in mind just to realize the other person isnt interested unless its their way. i wish i can revisit her in the future and apply the stuff i actually envisioned for her- but well, so far thats what we got. cant say im happy aside from the silhouette.

some other reaaally rough ideas for the beach line project for g3. i did most of those during my office work lol. those are for ghoulia. for her i wanted to keep in mind her 50s theme from g1 actually cause i love it so much. thats where the glam chill look came from. then i was like eh its nice but new ghoulia is way more rad and sporty so i tried to think of her doing surf (i also have sketches for deuce in surf attire so they would be fun) i have so many of those all over my house cause when g3 was barely launching i was so excited. and so bored at work. so i just got every paper note i could to sketch random ideas lol Also SILLY OC ALERT!!!

This was mostly a joke but i made her thinking of ET Bilu from a brazilian urban legend lol. thinking of her as a scary skinny legend w stereotypical and hilarious proportions common to old MH dolls was what inspired me at first but then also the whole 2012 pop diva look. Shes just a funny little gal. busquem conhecimento!

Brazilian ghouls ✨ Part 2

Mestiços, kagunes and Brazilian categorization

Let's start with the mestiços, there is no way to separate them as just half ghouls or half humans, they are mestiços (a Brazilian word which means one born of different nationalities, ethnicities)

Recapping part 1, the miscegenation between ghouls and humans begins before colonization, indigenous women discovered ways to make edible food using human body bases, and were able to have healthy pregnancies

The first born from these unions were strong and respected warriors

During colonization, ghouls, humans, natives or Africans were all enslaved together and relationships between these became increasingly common

With the growth of immigration of different peoples, miscegenation increased even more

Half-breeds are a large gray area, there is no way to define them between humans and ghouls, Thanks to indigenous knowledge, the mixture of ghoul and human genetics, many mestizos have no dietary restrictions, but there are still those who do, there are those who cannot eat cooked food, who do not handle too much seasoning, or who simply cannot consume human food.

And the kagune is also another matter, many have parents with different kagunes, or parents who already had hybrid kagunes, many mixed-race ghouls are born with several kakuhous to support so many different RC cells, but sometimes not everyone develops, or not equally

• In fact, Brazilian kakuhous cannot even be divided into subgroups like in Japan, there are many different types that have formed over the years

• The kagunes in Brazil are not as big and strong as the Japanese ones, many ghouls and mestiços do not use them as a predatory weapon, opting for guns or knives

• For a long time, there was no categorization for species in Brazilian society, but the IBGE (Brazilian Statistics Institute), in 2010, presented the official category

A quick explanation for better understanding, Brazilian miscegenation is so strong and deep-rooted that in fact, Brazilians do not have an exclusively Brazilian ethnicity or trait. Like in Japan, or in European countries, so I followed the logic implemented by the government for ethnic categorization Which is divided into white, pardos (I didn't find an equivalent in English, but it's the gray area for Brazilians, The word itself refers to the color of someone who is tanned, but anyone who does not identify with any of the other ethnicities is classified as pardo), black, indigenous and yellow people

Humans

It does not mean that the person is 100% human, since in Brazil it is very difficult to measure this, but they are people who meet the following criteria:

- They do not have direct ghoul ancestry in two generations

- They do not have kakugan, kakuhou and kagune

- No dietary restrictions on 80% of foods

- Has less than 1000 RC cells

- No need for human meat in diet

Ghouls

- Has no direct human descendants for two generations

- Has kakugan in both eyes, kagunes and kakuhou

- Has dietary restrictions on more than 95% of human foods

- It has more than 1000 RC cells

- Have foods made from human meat in diet

Mestiços

- Any individual who has hybrid descendants for at least two generations

This is an optional criterion, as some mestizos arise, inheriting genes from older generations

- Individuals who do not fully fit into either option

Culturally, there are several subdivisions, the most famous are:

Coffee with milk

Individuals that have characteristics of both species, but human characteristics stand out

Coffee with blood

Individuals that have characteristics of both species, but ghoul characteristics stand out

The statistical census carried out in 2010 was the first time that Brazilians were aware of the mixing of species, where 48% of the population was human, 43.6% mixed race and 7.4% ghoul

Previously, there was a document proving the species, but in 2021, when the identity card was updated, which already included other documents, the species also became available.

I have a little headcanon that the ghouls can transform themselves into a unique creature related to their elements. With this, I decided to draw my ghoul oc, Ember, as a dragon.

Ember's dragon design was made with the same color palette and some features to resemble their clothes (the membrane on their elbow referencing the cuffs of their shirt and the wings their blazer). The horns and tail are basically a evolved version of these on their ghoul form.

Their design was inspired in some descriptions of Dragon from Guabiruba, a brazilian urban legend about a giant dragon sighted by a farmer on the woods. There isn't too many infos about him online, but he is descripted as a big flying creature with a tongue made of fire.

The eldest child of the Blues,a mixed Gillman/Bunyip family.

(Mixed Brazilian and Indigenous Australian)

Lagoona is an energetic half-bunyip girl from the great scarrier reef off Australia,who after a disastrous time in school in her own country was pulled from the proverbial and literal tide by her parents to attend monster high. Boisterous,a little airheaded but kind and friendly,with powerful shapeshifting abilities to match her big emotions,Lagoona plans on becoming the school's star athlete having already joined the football,rugby and swim teams in her first few weeks on site. In that time also becoming fast friends with a small group of monsters called the Ghouls and her roommate Draculaura,MH looking and feeling like the fresh start she needed after her past experiences…

Likes: team sports (particularly football,cricket,rugby league and aussie rules),meat and seafood,sharks,telenovelas and hanging out at the beach.

Dislikes: water pollution,dolphins,public performance,dancing and low humidity.

Killer style: swimwear,sportswear and comfortable hoodies,primarily in her favoured blue, pink and black,and although they're not really athletic wear,fishnets upcycled out of literal nets that floated away from boats,an objectively better use for them than having them floating around tangling up sealife.

Familiar: Neptuna, a Rabbitfish Shark, and according to lagoona,the cutest creature in the whole ocean! (Regardless of some people's unwarranted dismissal towards her pet as just a "dumb fish" and or mean jokes about her being delicious fried with chips Toralei!, I mean look at her, she's adorable!!!)

Pet Peeve: the climate and humidity of new Salem. Although lagoona loves monster high the cold climate of vermont compared to her home in Australia causes her scales and scutes to itch and shed a lot,especially after a day playing sport.

Freaky Flaw: Her resentment over how school in Australia ended up for her. Spending most of her early teens bullied lagoona is determined to "get it right this time" with her new school,and while the ghouls are an amazing group of pals,lagoona feels a little guilty over not being her "true self" compared to them,worried that they'd abandon her if she let her true feelings show,and instead channels her anger into sports and exercise to blow off steam.

Spooky Secret: While nowadays she prefers to play contact sports, up until secondary school lagoona also participated in competitive gymnastic and dance,however after an incident while living in Australia she developed a fear of dancing and public performances,and threw herself into more team based sports instead,the fallout of this same incident being what prompted her parents to pull her out of secondary school send her to monster high

Dream job: Lagoona hopes one day her sporting prowess will land her a spot on the Australian Olympic team,or have her playing for the Matildas in the world cup,or at the Rugby championship for the wallabies,or in the AFL grand final,or…

Five Fearsome Facts:

As a half-bunyip, lagoona has some of their innate shape-shifting abilities,although being a teen she's still working around the ins and outs of learning to control said transformations and high emotions sometimes cause her to shapeshift involuntarily, lagoona is thankful monster high can be a place to properly hone her powers to be as proficient as her mother one day.

Lagoonas mother is also renowned for having the fiercest set of jaws on the whole scarrier reef,and her daughter's aren't too different,with lagoona sporting a bite force as strong as a crocodile and can similarly crack bones open with sheer jaw muscle strength alone as well as regrow her entire set of teeth if needs be. Regardless,Mrs blue ensures that lagoona and her sisters keep their teeth in tiptop shape through daily cleaning regardless of whether they can regenerate them or not.

Because of her active lifestyle and the energy needed for shapeshifting, lagoona has a voracious appetite, having been rumoured to have once skeletonised a whole cow carcass back in Australia. Although now at the behest of her notably gore-squeamish friend Draculaura she's trying to be a little less gung-ho about the act of chowing down on her favourite foods.

Like a lot of her latino father's side of her family (as well as a few of her mum's by way of Neighbors) lagoona has grown up with a love of telenovelas and soap operas and has been trying to get her roommate draculaura as invested in them as she is since they started boarding together.

Compared to her boy/girl crazy friends Lagoona has so far not really bothered much with trying to find a partner at MH, in truth she's taking a clean break from dating after the disastrous implosion of her first middle school relationship with gil webber, which lagoona in hindsight can recognise was incredibly unhealthy in nature (lagoona's nigh-obsessive romanticisation,gil's self pity and neglectful tendencies and general inexperience from both parties) and was just not what she needed at the time.

New character profile,as well as the final character out of our initial gang of five/six main characters!

Tbh lagoona being part bunyip and a shapeshifter has been an idea I've liked for a while,for those not in the know a bunyip is a water monster from Australian folklore that originated from indigenous Australians (hence why lagoona is also half indigenous) either based on the indigenous oral tradition about extinct Aussie megafauna or as a simple campfire story to screw with the white settlers/warn them about going near stagnant pools that could be full of crocodiles/murderous kangaroos/what have you.

A big part of the bunyip myth is that what it looks like exactly is kind of up to interpretation,hence shapeshifting, particularly shapeshifting different traits and features from different animals into one design (for example lagoona having crocodile scutes and jaws,webbed paws like a river otter and a fluked tail like a bull shark alongside more gillman-y features inherited from her dad) and as a side note,I also like the further idea that because of their half Latino heritage lagoona and her sisters designs either incorporate parts of or only Amazonian animals opposed to thier mother, whose parts come from only Australian animals (with a few exceptions their faunas are pretty interchangeable so they don't look all that different)
