❝    pardon me !   ‘scuse  me !   sorry !   ‘scuse !    ❞         a  crowd .   a  thick  crowd  with  loud  chatter   &   laughter  clashing  against  music .   khalid  couldn’t  remember  the  last  time  he’d  been  in  a  good  crowd .   he  couldn’t  remember  the  last  time  he’d  been  to  a  party !    well   ---   yes  he  could  actually .   his  tenth  birthday  party .   there  wasn’t  a  crowd  like  this  there ,  that’s  for  certain ,  but  it  was  a  party   &   it  was  the  only  one  he’d  been  to  in  the  twenty  four  years  between  then   &   now .   there  was  something  certainly  electrically  exciting  about  being  at  one  now .   he  came  here  just  to  check  on  jay  but  now ,  well ,  you’d  have  to  kick  him  out  to  get  him  to  leave .

snaking  through  the  dance  floor  to  try   &   find  a  good  spot  had  gone  mostly  well  enough .   all  up  until  he  trips  over  a  foot   &  crashes  into  a  nearby  person  until  he’s  half  leaning  on  them  for  support .          ❝    woah !   sorry  about  that !    ❞           as  he’s  looking  down  to  straighten  his  stumbled  feet  to  take  his  weight  off  her ,  though ,  there’s  something  that  catches  his  eye  on  the  edge  of  his  vision .   something  hanging  from  her  neck .   he  smiles  as  he  rights  himself  now .           ❝    i  like  your  little  genie  lamp !    i  really  think  that  kinda  decor  should  come  in  fashion .   loads  of  lamps ,  everywhere !    ❞

This girl is amazing. My Ruby. She's 12yrs old and has arthritis in her knees and hips, hypermobility and recently diagnosed with hypothyroid. She's in constant pain and often only manages one or two days at school each week. She managed Monday and Tuesday (a miracle two days on the trot) and her guitar lesson last night (she is an amazing guitarist, practises every day, her teacher was in an 80s pop band 🙂). Today was too much. But even though she can't walk today, she's cracking on with school work sent to her via Teams. Tomorrow we have yet another hospital appointment (this one for her thyroid), so we are hoping she will get back into school on Friday. So, I want to give a big shout out to our brave kids, struggling with life changing conditions. Different storytime moods always call for a variety of different stories. Sometimes you want funny wordplay, other times fact-filled non-fiction, and still other times all you want is a really lovely, old-fashioned fairytale.
