It was an accident that River found the pub in the first place. He was walking around, trying to clear his head from another shitty day in Slough House, when he ended up walking in a random direction and resisting the urge to throw himself in the Thames. The pub looked… nice? Small and down a cobblestoned alley. It clearly looked like the type that locals mainly used. No fancy overpriced cocktails or pub grub that was less pie and mash and more sous vide cuts of meat with pomme puree and micro veg.

All in all, it was the type of place that River wanted to go into. Drinking alone on a work night was never a good start but he needed this.

There were a couple of people already in the pub. Dark oak floors and counter with a hint of rich brass. The seat covers of the booths were a rich red but time had faded the fabric. It felt old. Not the false old of some of the newer pubs. This was a pub with History. The few people looked over when River came in but quickly absorbed themselves back into their pints. The only person who didn’t look away, and seemed out of place, was the bartender. His gaudily coloured shirt was an unpleasant bright spark in the otherwise comforting gloom of the pub.

River approached the bar and looked over the beers on tap. A few microbreweries (this bartender seemed like the type of knob to have them) but then there more usual, expected beers that River would expect a pub like this to have.

“What’ll be mate?”

River looked up and locked eyes with the bartender. Fuck, his eyes. Fuck, his face. Maybe that was why he wore that hideous shirt, to distract people from his impossibly handsome face. To River’s surprise, a pint was put down in front of him.

“But I-” River started but the bartender held up a hand

“Nah, mate I get it.”

Oh fuck. He spotted River staring.

“When I had to deal with Jackson Lamb all fucking day I had that same look on my face.

Wait? What?

If anyone asked River why he kept coming back to the Heartford Arms he’d said that it was because Robin gave him cheap pints and on a Slough House salary every little helped. Well, that was part of the truth but also there was another reason…

“River! Good to see you. Usual?”

And there was the second reason.

Beaming smile. Actually happy to see him. All round good person. Knew his order off by heart and would actually talk to him without sneering.

Fuck.

“Yeah, thanks.”

“Are you sure I can’t tempt you into something new?”

You grinned at him and you poured his pint. Fuck, you could tempt him into hell and back but instead River shook his head.

“Just the usual, thanks.”

“Come on Riv, don’t you want to try something new?”

River jumped as Robin practically silently walked up behind him. Robin gave him a sympathetic look and when you’re back was turned whispered,

“Sorry, bad habits are hard to break.”

“Don’t mention it.”

You turned back and gave the two of them a beaming smile. You didn’t know about them being Service or Slough House and River wanted to keep it that way. River could sense Robin relaxing next to him and couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy. Robin got to work with you day in and day out. Robin ran a successful business. Was handsome, charming, funny and had the balls to leave Slough House. Everything that River didn’t have. Why would you looked anywhere other than at Robin?

“Cheers.” said River as he moved into his usual booth

You stared at him with worry etched across your face. You leant closer to Robin.

“Is he ok?” you asked

Robin sighed, knowing he couldn’t tell you the whole truth.

“He will be,” he said, “he just needs his head screwing on.”

It’s funny how quickly good things can come to an end.

River had popped out briefly for a cheeky lunchtime pint. Lamb was fuck knows where and Slough House was unusally quiet. Well, now River knew why.

“Hey River! Come join us!”

Min’s voice carried through the quiet pub and River groaned. He slowly approached the others and said,

“How the fuck do you know about this place.”

Louisa nodded towards Robin who was already pouring River his usual.

“Left before you joined,” she said, “did he keep that from you.”

“No. He just didn’t let me know that you guys came in as well.”

River sat down heavily and sighed,

“Well this place is fucking ruined.”

“Don’t say that,” said Min, “where else are you going to find a pint for less than a fiver in London?”

Well, that was true. Even the dirtiest Spoons was still expensive. Robin put down River’s pint and said,

“Don’t let Lamb catch you guys here.”

“We won’t.” said Min

“How many times have we been here and he hasn’t caught us.” said Louisa

“Why, you still afraid of him?” asked Min

“No.” Robin said, a little too quickly earning a smirk from the trio

“Does he even know about this place?” said River

“Oh yeah,” said Robin grimacing, “came in one time and stunk the place out. Fucking arsehole. One day I’m going to bar the cunt.”

“Good luck with that.” said Louisa

“I’d like to be in when that happens.” said Min

“No you don’t,” said Louisa, “you know he’ll just ban us from coming here.”

“What Lamb doesn’t know can’t hurt him.” protested Min

“He’ll find out,” said Robin, “he always has a way of finding these things out.”

Just at that moment the door to the pub opened and the four of them looked over nervously. Instead of the imposing figure of Lamb, a rather tense looking Catherine entered. She was clutching her bag tightly and looking nervous. Robin immediately hopped up and said,

“Catherine. It’s been too long.”

“Yes, well,” she said curtly, “you run a pub.”

“I do serve tea and coffee and soft drinks.”

“Well,” Catherine said, “still…”

Robin winced, realising he put his foot in it.

“Sorry.”

Catherine gave him a soft smile, knowing that he didn’t mean any harm. She turned her attention to the others.

“Jackson wants you three back in the office,” she said, “and for Robin to stop serving you at lunchtime.”

“He said that?” asked Robin with raised eyebrows

“Not quite those words.” admitted Catherine

“Seemed a bit too restrained for him,” said Robin, “but you guys should leave.”

Robin clapped River on the shoulder, causing River to blush and Min and Louisa to share a knowing look. Robin moved behind the bar where you were. River’s gaze drifted to you and you gave him a bright smile before looking back at Robin.  Robin smiled down at you and you laughed at something he said and got out a cocktail shaker.

“Thank fuck,” muttered Min, “she trying to teach him how to make a decent cocktail.”

“Do you think it’ll work?” asked Louisa

“It’s got to be better than the shit cocktails he serves us.”

The rest of the conversation was lost on River. He was too busy focusing on the way Robin touched you and the way you leant into his touch. You laughed at Robin’s attempts at making a cocktail.

“Cute couple.”

Now this snapped River out of his thoughts. He looked down at Catherine who was looking at you and Robin. River clenched his jaw briefly before downing his pint and slamming the glass on the table. He stormed out of the pub, earning a confused look from Catherine.

“What was that all about?” she asked

“River’s pinning.” Min said in a low voice

“Over who?” asked Catherine

“We don’t know,” said Louisa, “although my money’s on y/n.”

“Nah,” said Min as he double checked he had his bag and all his belongings, “it definitely Robin.”

Catherine watched them leave before slowly following. If Louisa or Min had bothered to ask her, she would’ve said that the answer was obvious.

It was both.

The Goods, the Bollocks, the Testes

“She’s not a damn dog, Dementus.”

It was an unusually pleasant evening. They had camped in the lee of a ridge, above a dry riverbed. Dementus’ tent was pitched, and the distinctive kite flew over it, signaling the Octoboss’s whereabouts, but the two of them sat outside, looking out over the desert while they ate their evening meal. Behind them, the clamor of the Horde setting up for the night echoed off the rocks.

“’Course she’s not a dog, why would I think she was?” The warlord settled in on a rock and sipped at his cup of…something. It contained grub mash, that was about all either of them knew. “For one thing, she’s prettier than my dogs.”

“That’s not what I mean. What’s the point of hauling her around with us? At least the History Man’s useful. What have you got planned for her?”

“Planned? I haven’t got anything planned for her. It’s just nice to be a family man again, that’s all.”

“She’d not your kid.”

“She could be. She’s got the spunk.” Dementus chuckled. “Took a chunk right out of ol’ Rizzdale’s hand. That’ll teach him to be careful.”

“Yeah. And then you had to throw a muzzle on her cause she tried to take a chunk out of you.”

“Heh. Yeah, she could be my kid. Got my spunk.”

“That’s not where she gets it from.” The Octoboss scowled into his cup. “Her mum had pair on her, a big clanging brass pair. And she’s got the same.”

“Ah, what does it matter if she takes after her mum or me-”

“You shouldn’t have made her watch, D. But since you did, you shouldn’t have brought her with. One of these days that kid’s gonna turn around and put a knife in your back; tomorrow or ten years from now, it won’t matter. Then what are the rest of us gonna do?”

Dementus screwed up his face and gave an exaggerated shrug. “What does anybody do when one warlord gets taken out by a better warlord?” He glanced at the Octoboss, who was rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Hey, you’re not going soft on me, are you? We had to do what we had to do. She wasn’t gonna tell us if we just asked nice-like. Besides, she snapped almost twenty men. Some of ‘em were your men! We can’t just let her walk after that. What kind of message does that send? Huh, the great Octoboss does one bitch too many and decides to grow a conscience? Hah!”

The Octoboss answered with an exasperated glare. Dementus kept talking.

“It’s survival of the fittest out here: she survived, so she’s the fittest. Who better to take over the Great Biker Horde? Aren’t you always saying we should think about the future?” He took a swig of soup. “What am I supposed to do with her?”

The Octoboss waited until he was done before speaking. “Get rid of her. You can have Organic do it nice and quiet while she’s asleep, she won’t feel anything. You get rid of her and you save us all a lot of trouble down the road.” He set his soup cup down. “Have I ever given you bad advice?”

“Baah. You’re scared of her, aren’t you? Scared of a little kid?” Dementus grinned at the idea. The Octoboss didn’t smile.

“Yeah, I am. And you should be too.”

For a moment Dementus met his eyes, and he dared to think he’d talked some sense into him. Then the moment passed.

“Baaahh.” Dementus got up. “Never throw out anything useful. And she might still be useful! Besides, you said it, she’s got a big clanging brass pair on her. She’ll make one hell of a biker when she grows up. A worthy successor to the Great Dementus!”

“She’s not gonna success anything, D, she hates your guts-”

Dementus kept walking, talking over him. The Octoboss sat back down, rubbing his neck. Damned if Dementus didn’t know how to give him a proper headache.

His men would be talking tonight, as they had most nights since the woman and child from the place of abundance had rolled into their camp. They had a good thing going with Dementus, he always told them. What he didn’t tell them was that good thing was always one of Dementus’ bright ideas away from falling apart.

Tritium Power

Yes, another Tritium piece!  I like the look of exposed vintage screws (originally used in glasses) with the smallest hexagonal nuts I’ve ever seen.  The vial is wrapped in fine copper wire and sealed in a glass tube with vintage copper “acorn” end caps and tiny round finials. The curved vintage brass arms are secured to two gold tone brackets and secured with the screws.  The side pins have a tiny brass round “dangle” drop ball and are threaded with copper tubing and tri-ridged brass tube.  The brass knurled beads contain a tiny grub screw that secures it all.  

The Tritium tube will glow continuously for 12 to 15 years and doesn’t require “charging” like conventional glow in the dark.  It is currently used in high end watches, keyring fobs and military weapon sights.  

Dimensions:

The whole pendant section is just under 2 inches wide and 2 inches long.  It is on a brass facet cut brass cable link chain.  It drop (from the clasp to the pendant is 9 inches including the lobster claw clasp.  It is designed to be worn high on the decolletage but I’m happy to alter it for you.

This piece transcends the steampunk genre and would be an intriguing, unique addition to costume or contemporary clothing.  It’s US$195 including tracking postage and would be covered under Paypal buyer protection.  Just send me a PM if you are interested.

For the last week and a half, Mike and I have been answering the question “when are you guys launching the boat?” with May 1. May 1, May 1. Then our neighbour boat asks us the same question and Mike says Monday. I laughed and said “haha Monday...wait, is May 1 on Monday?!” OMG! I can’t believe it is May 1 on Monday. We are in overdrive to say the least and the weather is of course, still not cooperating. It has been a down pour all day.

This past week has probably been our most productive yet. Mike continued to work on the chain drive links from the self steering gear and finally got the last tricky spot to release. She’s wiggles so smoothly now that she has been greased up. Hopefully the self steering proves to be “fixed” when we do sea trials. We are still awaiting our other unit, the Windvane, which should be shipping soon if all goes well. Two units are better than one, especially if they both work. The original one runs on power, but the new one is wind driven. It’s an expensive addition, but Mike and I both agree we needed one for a two man trip across the ocean. Our experience of having to steer the entire St Lawrence Seaway was enough to know we want this unit. It will be so much more relaxing to just have to watch for other boats knowing the boat is steering on the right course. Instead of watching a compass for 4 hours straight. The old self steering seemed to have been broken when we left it last year, but after replacing the switch and small grub screw, plus getting the chain actually fluid again, we are pretty confident it will work.

We did another Halifax trip on Saturday to go to the Binnacle store... to spend more money. We needed more epoxy to finish the hull and also more beige for the non skid on the deck. While we were there, we agreed on a boot stripe and decided to go with Fire Red Brightside. Oh my Goodness, it’s hot! It looks so good I can’t wait to get it done and the black antifouling. It will be such a sexy boat.

The old genoa sail that we have been trying to salvage is finally off to the sailmakers. After spending a few days last week scraping tape and killing my hands, I finally finished it on Sunday. Yes we even worked on Sunday! That’s how busy we are. It needs a stitch all the way down the leech but that’s about it.

Mike was able to move a couple of the jackstands so that we could sand patches of the hull that still had the old paint on it. He also grinded the keel smooth and finally on Monday, we finished the epoxy on the majority of the hull. The few patches that only have one coat could use another, and might get it, but at least they have one solid coat.

While he was getting everything ready Monday morning, I cleaned and taped off 4 sections of non skid for painting. As soon as the epoxy was done I went up and started painting. Now, everything in front of the companion way is painted and I just have the cockpit and transom area. So if Monday wasn’t busy enough, because we love work (which I’m convinced Mike is in love with fixing up boats versus actually sailing them), we took out the genoa and scrubbed her clean. Those two old sun covers sure did collect some serious dirt over the years. You wouldn’t even believe that they were the same sail. Monday was an endless day and by the time we finished eating, I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. I was so physically tired, I think we were asleep by 9 oclock.

Tuesday was a good day of work too. I was able to get the steering wheel painted and oh man it looks amazing. It used to be the ugly grayish colour and is now a lovely “antique brass” colour. Every 30 minutes I went and did another coat, flipping her over and spraying thin coats until the can was empty. It just shines in the sunlight.

Mike taped the boot stripe and we wet sanded the little bit of antifouling that our electric sanders had missed. It seemed like it was going to be a bigger job, but it went really quickly. We did the starboard side only because we weren’t sure how long it was going to take. As soon as the hull dried up, Mike and I rolled and tipped the bright red paint on. It definitely needs another coat but wow!

On a side note, Mike took me into one of the big loft/buildings they have here on the marina for storing boats. They have a couple really old, classic racing sailboats. Like 1907 old. The teak wood features and the classic lines on these boats make them look like torpedoes. Absolutely amazing to see.

At the moment, the rain has finally let up after a day of absolute downpour. I was committed to getting work done today no matter what, so I suited up and wet sanded the port side line to get it ready for when the rain does finally let up. Which we are hoping for Friday to get warm enough to do the second coat of red on the starboard side and the first coat on the port side. Plus I want to do the rest of the starboard side and transom. As much as possible, while leaving us some space to step. Monday might not work based on weather but I think we will make the deadline. But don’t hold me to it...I guess you will have to find out next Wednesday if we go in the water or not. we will!!! Food has been amazing too! Fruit salads and pork ribs and peanut butter ball snack bites. Lots of fruit and veggies have kept us going strong. Versatility is the name of the game with the Merlin Mini, a collaboration between Augvape and Roxy. With both single and dual coil decks this is a 24 mm diameter RTA to appeal to all vapers. Two airflow reducers for the single coil deck aimed at mouth-to-lung vapers. Generous top fill slots with a threaded cap, 2 mL juice capacity, completely adjustable airflow and ability to wrap coils in either direction for both decks make the Merlin Mini a winner.

The 18 mm single coil deck contains dual offset posts allowing large inside diameter (ID) coils of exotic wire. The below coil airflow is 4.5 mm unrestricted, and 1.5 mm and 2 mm airflow inserts are included to reduce the atomizer to a satisfying mouth-to-lung draw.
