Just imagine Scrappy-Doo appearing out of nowhere, as the old deus ex machina even, spontaneously preparing to expose shows such as these as Frauds and Deception Upon Especially Vulnerable and Less-Sophisto Audiences Otherwise Expected to Regard the Branson Music Shows as the Exemplar and Ideal of American Cultural Heritage, Identity and Folkways, and a More Logically Natural Ideal Therefor ... with Scooby-Doo and crew left to unmask all involved and expose the broader deceit.

A Fond Farewell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Rooster Teeth beginning its draw down, an era has truly passed. The company has lasted more than two decades. 18 (soon 19) seasons, five mini-series, and cameos and references in Halo itself for Red vs Blue. 9 volumes alongside two movies, a chibi series, Ice Queendom, and its own games for RWBY. And so much more beyond that, RT Shorts, podcasts, Achievement Hunter, The Slow Mo Guys, and on and on. That’s a lot, especially for a little startup launching off a web series. I was listening to “This Isn’t Goodbye, It’s See You Later” by Richie Branson while I was making this little memorial post. It’s a song made for another Rooster Teeth show, Camp Camp, and I have to say it’s some very appropriate music for this moment.
The day the news dropped, I wrote up a little comment in response to Rooster Teeth beginning its closing down, and I thought I’d share some of it here. I grew up with Rooster Teeth, a bit of a cheesy line I know, but it’s true for a lot of us. I was just a little kid way back in the early 2000’s, a kid that liked Halo (a game I didn’t even own for a long time, but played at a friend’s house), and was just getting curious about what I could find about it on YouTube. And that brought me into the world of music videos and skits and montages made for that little game I liked.
From there, I discovered a small web series called Red vs. Blue. I’d sneak onto my folk’s computer to watch it since they didn’t appreciate the language, and in doing so I dipped my toes into the wide world of the internet for the first time. As I got older, I eventually hopped onto Reddit for its discussion threads of Rooster Teeth’s latest show, RWBY. I began my first in-depth fandom interactions, speculating about the show, enjoying the flood of fanart, even got into fanfics about RWBY (those fics have had their own amazing evolution alongside the show) and to this day it’s the fandom I’ve followed and bookmarked the most fics from. All the while I was making friends and bonding with people through the community this company and its shows have created.
Watching the shows and people grow over time was, looking back on it, just like watching myself grow. I was never really a social media/internet kind of guy, until it came to Rooster Teeth. The shows, shorts, podcasts, it all opened up a whole new world for me. It’s sad to see it coming to a close, and I hope it gets picked up in the future. But I’m happy, too, that it’s left so much behind, and had such an impact on me. It’s left me with so many good memories. Rooster Teeth, its shows, those that created and worked on it, and above all the community around it will always have a special place in my heart.
So, I bid a fond farewell to Rooster Teeth and its crew, and anyone who may drift away from the fandom in time. I wish you all the best.

in the spirit of the genre i'd like to hijack the current asian country music train to talk about one of my favourite historical guys shoji tabuchi: fiddler hall of famer! king of kitsch americana slay!! one of the Most Guys Ever in country music!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[OKAY this spiralled into a Whole Thing so im putting it under the cut to save your dashes. be warned this is long]
quick backstory: shoji tabuchi was born in osaka, japan. he was classically trained on the violin but discovered country through roy acuff and joined a fairly popular japanese band called the bluegrass ramblers. in 1967 he moved to america with (he claimed later) his guitar and five hundred dollars and played in a couple of bands around california and texas. in the 80s, he got a contract in branson missouri, met his wife there, and they started a show called (very creatively) the shoji tabuchi show.
this is where it gets fun, because the shoji tabuchi show is. okay. it's like if you concentrated the distilled essence of 1990s RAGHHH AMERICA HELL YEAH-style patriotism into a three hour-long extravaganza with backup dancers! fog machines! ten thousand glitter suits! SHOJI spelled out all caps with lasers! a glow in the dark space violin from NASA! like it's TACKY! it's CHEESY! it's CAMP! it's genuinely hilarious!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway, when people talk about tabuchi they like to say that he was the "american dream" like he had a family, he owned a whole incredible theatre with (no joke) the gaudiest bathrooms in america, he played two shows a day until he died, he performed to the pm of japan… like he was GETTING THAT BREAD!! the city of branson even gave him a public holiday!
Tumblr media
and to be clear. i love tabuchi, i think he was a great entertainer and a great performer, and i don't begrudge him any of his success. but there are better fiddlers out there, better performers, better singers. as a guy on reddit put it in 2013 put it, you kind of have to recognise that at least some part of his success is enabled by "Asian Can Into Country Music???" syndrome. and he has kind of acknowledged this himself-- he used to sell himself as the "japanese cowboy" before he started his show, and he once told a magazine "say person A and person B play [the fiddle] just as good. who stands out, me or him?" which is. #girlboss? maybe? one of his more defining traits throughout his career was his fairly pronounced japanese accent which made it difficult for him to gain footing in the music industry at first but became iconic . some people have said that he didn't actually have that strong of an accent and he was playing it up for the Bit-- a hypothesis that is (somewhat) supported by his album named (i kid you not) ROVE RETTERS.
so how much of the shoji tabuchi show was the Bit and how much of it was genuine? and if it is a bit, who's in on it? who's being made fun of- tabuchi? japan? the audience? america? i have to admit i'm pretty biased here because the essential Incongruence of being an asian-can-into-country-music person IS funny! rawhide kobayashi and all that! and i understand why he might have leant into it and played it up to survive/get famous/get that bread. i never knew tabuchi, so i can't say that like it's fact, but wouldn't that be the most american thing of all?

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Makes me sick!!! That they left Johnny Cash in Branson like oh my god there could not have been a worse place for that artist than the weird place all the off Broadway rejects get banished to in confederate country which in theory sounds like it could work for mr. cash's style of music however, the key point here is that Branson is in Missouri, where there are no gods.
When you drive into Branson, you pass a place that makes those hyper realistic baby dolls. Across the street a house had decorated their porch in confederate flags. There's a titanic museum, for some reason, in missouri. There's a Ripleys believe it or not. When I rolled through Optimus Prime and bumblebee were hanging out at Ripleys. When I went to the Abba show, this poor British man, announced "ABBER" and the crowd, which was deeply midwestern, waited till the announcer announced Abba. Reader you could hear a dust bunny fart.
Some of yall may remember Branson from the tragic DUCK boat accident. That's where Cash was left. Wtf. Lmfao, even.

fanfic roundup ✨
I haven't done one of these in such a long time and I've actually posted quite a lot since then! So here is a brief description of all my fanfics by fandom. If you're a rareshipper like me, you'll probably find something to read? Anyway, I hope you enjoy it <3
Black Sails
💮 a great comfort in you - Slice of life, very domestic Miranda/James feels. If you don't know me, I'm Miranda's no 1 fan and I love writing her and this is just a (bitter)sweet meditation on her and James' relationship. (I got so many amazing comments on this one when I first published it which I absolutely did not expect and still makes me very soft when I think back)
💮 a house you can build - mostly canon compliant, Miranda lives, fix-it fic. This pretty much sums up my feelings about Miranda/Flint/Thomas (I love them!!!) and was the first longish fic I wrote which I'll forever be proud of.
💮 Rarepair Week - This is actually four fics but I'll just sum it up like this. I wrote four fics for BS rarepair week earlier this year, all set in the same modern au. They're very queer and I adore them all. Pairings include Abigail/Idelle (which I continue to be obsessed with), Miranda/Madi, Madi/Flint/Silver, among others
Downton Abbey
💮 something gave you the nerve (to touch my hand) - Tom-centric, canon compliant (series + DA1). Chetwode/Branson/Lucy with lots of Tom feels and Tom (finally!!) breaking free from the Abbey.
💮 it's a love story - I'll forever be in awe that I actually wrote this. It's over 200k, and follows DA's seasons 2 and 3 - Edward lives. Extreme wishful thinking in the best way. Lots of polyam and queerness all around.
💮 thank you for the music (for giving them to me) - Mamma Mia time!!! Basically, DA but to the plot of Mamma Mia 1 (I even made a poster lol). Thomas-centric, Thomas feels, Thomas gets all the love. Polyam. Perfect summer reading
Gilmore Girls
Both of my GG fics are Jess/Rory/Logan, which is as rare as a rareship gets, but I fucking love them. These fics are so near and dear to me 🩷
💮 but i knew you'd linger - Technically canon compliant (including AYITL). Jess-centric. Non-linear timeline.
💮 i can see us (lost in the memory) - Canon divergent: Jess never goes to Stars Hollows. Very summer themed. Probably my only fic with a bittersweet ending (I said at the time that I inteded to write a sequel and I DO but that hasn't happened yet sooooo.... No promises but you can still hold out hope)
Others
💮 Hollywood (TV): when i kissed - I always forget I wrote this fic for some reason lol, but I love this show so much and wanted to create a little something out of it. Jack-centric, baby queer feels.
💮 F.R.I.E.N.D.S: denial is my greatest skill - Chandler-centric. Canon compliant. Future fic. I wrote most of this during my first year of college when I was extremely depressed and it kinda shows haha I love it a lot though. Also, I think the title is so on point, I fucking love it
💮 Babel: tough, tried, and true blue - I read Babel at the beginning of the year and was throughly destroyed by it, but at least I wrote this. Canon compliant, stolen moment kind of fic. Robin pov, Griffin/Anthony
💮Merrily We Roll Along: there is nothing important (that does not include you) - my most recent fic, which I am currently writing! I love it so so much and can't wait to continue it. Canon compliant, all the soft, nostalgic feels, redemption arc, etc. Lots of Frank/Charley/Mary love. I love it

Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
My goodness!  I think the weekends are ALL going to be good for the next few months.  Spring is here, with summer just round the corner!
The weekend started brilliantly with my first-ever visit to the famous 606 Club on Lots Road, Chelsea.  It’s a small, basement restaurant and music venue and, on Friday night, it was packed!  We were not only there to eat dinner (with Cheri Class) but also to see Beverley Skeete, described by the club’s owner as “The Undeniable Queen Of Friday Night At The 606.”  She and a top-notch band ran through a very diverse set ranging from John Lee Hooker and Nina Simone to Basement Jaxx and The Weeknd.  The highlight was Beverly’s version of Bonnie Raitt’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’.  What a song!  Crashed into bed after midnight!
However, I did see a distressing image on Friday night.  A food bank, about half a mile from where I live, just on the corner of Scrubbs Lane.  The thing is, travel two miles south down Scrubbs Lane and you hit Kensington High Street.  Two, three, four million pound houses owned by people like Jimmy Page, Robbie Williams, Richard Branson etc.  This city has become very ‘have’ and ‘have not’!
The DLR was up the spout on Saturday, so I had to get to Deptford via London Bridge.  I actually like getting out at Deptford station.  It means a walk through the market.  If I was to walk slowly, I’d spend a bloody fortune on yummy treats, so I kept my head down and walked briskly.  It’s a cracking road (great shops and great stalls) and, if you go, take money!
Many thanks to everyone that listened to the radio show.  Thank you for all your kind words.  I was getting messages from all sorts!  People I hadn’t heard from in ages and people I didn’t even know!  If you missed it, the show is up on Mixcloud.  Next week: The Letter T (Pt. 8).
Have a marvellous and momentous Monday.  I love you all.

🙌 NPC for Leah
Send a “🙌” and I’ll introduce you to an NPC related to my Muse. | @shcftingpieces
Branson Jacobs is Leah's father and a musician. He was a founding member and drummer for rock band, San Avalon. Over the years, the band's music evolved from a raw, edgy sound to a fusion of classic rock and punk. San Avalon's journey included world tours, headlining music festivals, and several of their albums achieving gold and platinum certifications. Branson was instrumental in getting the band through challenging periods of creative differences and personal conflicts. While San Avalon are no longer active, Branson continues to write songs, and collaborate with other musicians. Many of their songs hold a special place in Leah's heart.
Tumblr media
Growing up, Leah was immersed in the music industry. As a father, Branson loved the opportunity to introduce Leah to a wide range of musical genres. From a very young age, Leah was brought along to shows and sometimes on tour with the band, and, as she got older, they attended gigs together.
Whilst music is his first love, a close second is his love of baseball, particularly the LA Dodgers. He has a near encyclopaedic knowledge; able to recite player stats and Dodgers' lore with impressive detail. Branson took a young Leah to games whenever he was home and able to, and passed his love for the sport onto her.
Tumblr media
He has a calm and charismatic demeanour, and an outgoing personality. He didn't always get to be around as much as Leah might've liked whilst she was a child, but he's supportive of her and her career, and a constant source of inspiration for her. His knowledge of the music industry is a valuable resource that he readily shares, and his understanding the pressures and expectations that come with being in the spotlight make him a vital support.

Today's compilation:
Virgin's 21st Anniversary Sampler 1993 New Wave / Alternative Rock / Progressive Rock / Alternative Dance
Pretty essential listening here if you want a quick and dirty rundown of one of the most important independent record labels in the history of contemporary and popular music. Chronologically woven, this one-CD, UK-released 21st Anniversary Sampler from Virgin Records tracks the label's growth and evolution in 18 songs, beginning in 1973 with Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells"—which also served as the theme music for The Exorcist—and closes out in 1991, with an offering from the phenomenal and innovative electronic-new wave-synthpop group Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark. Can't say I'm too fond of the track that was chosen to specifically represent them, though.
Truth be told, billionaire business magnate Richard Branson may be a tax-evading ass who's like a baby boomer version of Elon Musk—although a lot less abhorrent in many ways—and his seemingly heartfelt desire to help rid the world of its existential crises seems to often be at odds with his own practice of hyper-capitalist entrepreneurialism, as well as his extravagant lifestyle. But still, like him or not, before there was Virgin Airways, Virgin Megastores, Virgin Mobile, and all of his other many, many ventures, the guy definitely had an ear for good music. And Virgin Records ended up marking the highly successful start of his quite absurd and sprawling business empire.
So, with this release, you definitely will not be getting a full representation of Virgin in its first 21 years, as it's missing contributions from quite a lot of people, including the Krautrock bands that fueled a lot of the label's initial success, like Can, Tangerine Dream, and Faust, and essential new wave and synthpop groups like The Human League and Culture Club too. But be that as it may, when taking on the nearly impossible task of boiling down this label to just 18 songs, this CD still definitely goes, and it really shows just how large Virgin managed to get and how impactful their roster was on music in general.
Virgin had originally started out as a relatively small enterprise, but after being able to nab such a controversial act as The Sex Pistols in '77, things only proceeded to grow from there, and they then ended up becoming quite a force for British alternative, prog, and new wave, with bands like Genesis, Madness, Simple Minds, and XTC leading the way. Following the dissipation of that era in the late 80s and early 90s, they then landed acts like Soul II Soul, Lenny Kravitz, and Enigma too, whose own early successes of "Back to Life," "Let Love Rule," and "Sadeness," respectively, showed that Branson had developed a label that had clearly been built to last and could adapt to popular music's changing and expanding landscape, all while managing to maintain a certain air of alternative coolness—despite the cringeworthy "21 year-old virgin" joke that comes along with this album itself 😒.
Highlights:
Mike Oldfield - "Tubular Bells (excerpt)" Roxy Music - "Love Is the Drug" Sex Pistols - "Pretty Vacant" XTC - "Making Plans for Nigel" Phil Collins - "In the Air Tonight" Madness - "Our House" Genesis - "Mama" Simple Minds - "Waterfront" Public Image Ltd. - "Rise" Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer" Soul II Soul - "Back to Life" Lenny Kravitz - "Let Love Rule" Enigma - "Sadeness"

Jarvis Branson Cocker (born 19 September 1963) is a musician, singer, songwriter, actor, and presenter; Cocker is best known as the well-dressed frontman for the Brit-pop band Pulp. He wears these goofy yet “ hipstery” glasses that he keeps on his with rubber bands while he does wild antics when he is performing during the mid-90s. Cocker was considered somewhat of a figurehead for the genre. At 15, Cocker founded Pulp under the name “ Abacus Pulp.” After numerous lineup changes and the shorting of their name to just Pulp, the band found success with their first two albums, His ‘n’ Hers and Different Class; they released two albums, but neither received the same amount of success Pulp took a hiatus, from 2003 to 2010. While the band was on a break, I became more aware of them in mid-2005-2006. During that time off, Cocker pursued a solo career during the 90s. He was a frequent guest on TV Shows and hosted an art series that involved him traveling around and meeting people who did outsider art. Cocker is known for his witty observations and charm. He is still making music. He collaborates with other artists. He briefly co-hosted the Australian radio program Recovery in 1996. He lent his voice to the character “ Petey” in Wes Anderson’s stop-animation movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. He has appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and as himself in The Comedy Good. There was a period in the mid-2000s when every other guy wanted to be like him, Night. Cocker keeps busy with various projects and will remain prominent in the Brit-pop genre.

Just being the Cattanooga Cats isn't exactly enough these days
First Kitten: Do you like to climb poles? Second Kitten: No; I'm not that kind of a cat.
--from Capt. Billy's Whiz Bang, December 1924
Sometimes, those midnight biscuits-and-gravy breakfasts the Cattanooga Cats are legendary for can generate some innovative ideas for improving their concert tours. Especially when some variety as goes beyond merely performing light-hearted and whimsical country-flavoured pop music (not to mention Scoots bringing up some anecdotes and thigh-slappers of stories drawing heavily on personal experience to open the second part of the show).
Yet at the same time recognising they're not quite the sort for Branson, Missouri; it seems they prefer carefully-nuanced country and hillbilly-music acts with subtle conservative propaganda messaging such as can appeal to a largely "poor white" audience whose patriotic feelings are crude, base and easily malleable along Shepherd of the Hills Expressway and 76 Country Boulevard.
So it came as no surprise to hear Kitty Jo "kick things up a notch" in terms of maintaining their relevance and audience appeal, if not so much on tour than at the stage of Cattanooga Klatsche, their Gatlinburg coffee house and artisan roastery, by suggesting something in the vein of that "feline circus" act as part of the Sundown Ceremony on Key West's Mallory Square as a distraction which, while not quite entr'acte material, certainly would offer more than a common concert experience bound to be stale and dated.
In effect, a side act of trained stunt felines pulling off a number of gymnastically-inclined acts bound to include a pole-climbing sequence bound to make the Wacky Races' Rufus Ruffcut look like a second-rate reject from a travelling lumberjack show of the cheapest sort. Especially considering that the climbing poles are also doing yeoman duty as scratching posts ... and the whole scored to reechy-sounding, hackneyed even, circus music to draw out the laughs, in particular a campy-sounding band version of "California, Here I Come" during the pole-climb act.
If the charge laid here, reader and fellow Hanna-Barberian, is likely one of trying to outdo The Banana Splits in seeking to reclaim their name from an awful horror-film treatment vis-a-vis concert antics and the reading of choicest examples of fan mail ... than Country, Kitty Jo, Groove and Scoots could be said to be "guilty on all counts, but for mitigating circumstances." (Especially those of a competitive nature.) Whether such will work or no (especially with the critics) is anybody's guess, which only time will answer.
