‘What?’ Robert said, staring at his sister in disbelief, unable to believe his ears.

‘You heard what I said, Robert. We’ve just caught Mary in bed with your chauffeur,’ Rosamund repeated.

‘Mary?’ he echoed, stupidly. ‘Are you sure?’

‘Yes, I’m sure!’ Rosamund snapped. ‘Why? Would the news have been more palatable if it had been Edith or Sybil?’

‘But… but… Mary… with Branson?’ he said, looking to his wife for confirmation.

Cora nodded, tight-lipped, trying not to see that image of Mary and Branson naked together in her mind’s eye again.

‘And there’s no doubt?’ Robert tried again, simply unable to process what his womenfolk were telling him.

‘Well, I suppose he could simply have been giving her the kiss of life, but I highly doubt they would both have needed to be naked and in his bed for that to happen,’ Rosamund said, tartly.

Robert dropped heavily into the nearest seat. ‘Mary. And Branson. Having… doing… oh, good lord.’

‘Yes, precisely,’ Rosamund said, handing her brother a brandy, watching him absently take it.

‘Where is she now?’

‘In her room. I told Mrs Hughes to lock her in.’

Robert looked up at her, looking even more shocked. ‘Lock her in? Is that really necessary?’

‘Do you want her to run off with the chauffeur?’ Rosamund asked, pointedly.

Sunday’s Stoutwhisperer Stout Selection is a 2016 vintage of @prairieales Branson Jamboree! This is an Imperial Stout aged in Oak Barrels and is a blend of Evan Williams 10-year, Buffalo Trace, Madiera, and brandy barrels. It was released in February of 2016! I must admit my Stout bar was set pretty low for this one…. not sure what I would find under the cap. What I found is a delightful dark elixir with notes of oak, chocolate, cherry and dark fruit! It’s probably past it’s peak since it’s over seven years old, but it’s surprisingly tasty! That’s what I love about Stouts! Chapter 6: Threnodies

“This is too much,” Mia murmurs when Ellinor returns downstairs, parcels in each arm, and already Cullen can sense her discomfort—feelings she so easily hides behind a demure blush and a small smile—but he knows her better.

“It’s—”

“It’s not,” Ellinor replies to her, eyes quieting him, it’s fine. “Our visit is long overdue, and you’re so kind to host us here in your home.” She places the packages on the table neatly before his siblings and sits beside him again, ignoring his hand that reaches for her under the table—Ellinor, he thinks exasperatedly—and clasping hers in her lap. “We’ve had the honor of meeting friends from all over Thedas, and we only thought it right to bring some...souvenirs, I suppose...from our travels and our colleagues.”

Rosalie only raises her eyebrows, and Mia draws her fingers to her lips, too unsure—perhaps too flattered, though Cullen doesn’t remember her to be quite so humbled like this—for words. But Branson, ever the most lively and least deterred of the four of them, grins, the light from his smile breaking any lingering awkwardness in the small kitchen as he takes a parcel eagerly from the bunch.

“Well this is really nice of you two,” he says, giving the box a light shake before pulling at the twine and paper covering it, finally removing the lid and— “Oho!” His smile widens as he pulls a bottle from the box, brushing off bits of paper from the box to read the label. “Antivan brandy! Andraste’s arse, I haven’t had this since—”

“You’ve never had it,” Mia laughs finally, pulling the bottle from his grasp to admire the light gold liquid.

“But now we can!”

Ellinor clears her throat, her own smile slowly growing from uneasy to pleased. “There’s one for each of you! It’s—it’s good, Cullen and I enjoy it sometimes.”

“Cullen enjoying fine brandy?” Branson huffs. “Your taste has gotten a lot more pretentious—no offense, Ellinor, it’s lovely—since you left home.”

Ellinor smirks. “None taken. But don’t mistake his occasional indulgence in brandy for a lack of indulgence in mead...which is still very much his favorite.”

“Ha!” Branson claps him on the back. “Haven’t forgotten your roots, then.”

As though he’d been frozen since Ellinor had first gone upstairs, Cullen cracks a smile finally. “I—ha, no. No, I haven’t.”
