ash wants to be a good father SO bad for brandy, but he never had the experience of true fatherhood, so he has no clue where to start.... he never even thought about having a family before because he believes that everyone who knows him will die... he wants brandy to live the life he never had SO BAD!!! but she can't because of him, and it HURTS! he already lost her once, and she's forever stuck in the path of the deadites with him, and he doesn't want to end up being like his father, who was never there with him, so he's just pulling it all out of his ass. she also reminds him of cheryl, and that's like an extra stab to the gut because he wants to finally succeed at protecting someone long enough that they live on with him... even when he tries his best, he ends up doing something like his dad, and he HATES IT!!!! he wants to be the cool dad, he wants to be her friend, and he wants to be normal. he knows just being brandy's father in general not only causes trouble with, you know... evil... but also how others treat her... when they first met, she was teased and mocked because her dad is "ashy slashy" and she constantly complained that the "psycho killer ashy slashy" is her dad, who was never there for her, and she believed ash was evil. THAT'S HIS BABY, YOUR HONOR!!! HIS WORLD!!!

crying about the fact that Ash just wants to hide out with his family and hope the monster goes away but Brandy urges him to stand up, partially for her benefit. and so he does fight for her but she’s scared so she makes him promise not to leave and he does, until he realizes that the only way to fulfill what she initially asked of him and to keep her safe IS to leave her. and how Brandy loses her father because of how much he doesn’t want to let her down and it’s all so 😭
