DR. MAYA ANGELOU COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

Born in San Diego and raised by a single mother in a predominantly Spanish-speaking household, Michelle Ruby—Brown Baby, aka MRBbaby, studied in San Francisco before returning home to teach art. Drawn, however, to spend more time creating, Bbaby now splits her time between Los Angeles and San Diego, pulled between mural art, character design, illustration, and fine art. Bbaby's art is heavily influenced by motherhood, and her Puerto Rican–Mexican heritage and one of the most popular commonly recurring characters in her work is Chucho, a rainbow colored pinata who maintains a positive outlook despite the inevitability of being broken. In 2019 BBaby participated in an @brandedarts curated project transforming the walls of the Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School on E 53rd St in South Central Los Angeles, and incorporated small Chucho figures riding on the backs of her fanciful child-pleasing creations.  @mrbbaby/

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

It’s hard not to smile and and find some glimmer of reassuring hope in the narrative work of Hebru Brantley. Born in Chicago in the early 80s and a product of the 90s graffiti scene, today Brantley’s “Afro-Futurism” infuses his iconic characters with attributes of comic book heroes while also drawing from a range of influences from hip-hop to African American history and anime to the work of Keith Haring. Characterized by youthful expression and human emotion in the face of the complexities and challenges of urban life, Brantley says his work challenges the traditional view of the hero. This early 2017 wall in the 200 block of Broadway was produced by Branded Arts and is a welcome addition—to the urban landscape of downtown Los Angeles, and to a world that could use far more Hebru Brantley.  @hebrubrantley  @brandedarts
