"DR. MAYA ANGELOU"
by Shawn Michael Warren
"It has been a tremendous honor to develop this monument of one of the most graceful black women to walk the earth." —Shawn Michael Warren
Incorporating his classical training in oil painting, @Artsy says Shawn Michael Warren's narrative work "brings attention and awareness to events and individuals—past and present—that have affected and shaped cultures and civilizations...," sometimes making us uncomfortable or highlighting the experiences of the underrepresented. When @Artnet asked how you "honor the legacy of a figure as towering as the late poet DrMayaAngelou ?" @BrandedArts answer was to work with South Central LA's Dr. Maya Angelou High School and bring together more than two dozen artists in 2019 for the week-long Maya Angelou Mural Festival. Warren's beautiful installation, comprised of 42 pieces of fabric, is on E 54th St.  @warrenart/

DR. MAYA ANGELOU COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL
by MRBbaby
Born in San Diego and raised by a single mother in a predominantly Spanish-speaking household, Michelle Ruby—Brown Baby, aka MRBbaby, studied in San Francisco before returning home to teach art. Drawn, however, to spend more time creating, Bbaby now splits her time between Los Angeles and San Diego, pulled between mural art, character design, illustration, and fine art. Bbaby's art is heavily influenced by motherhood, and her Puerto Rican–Mexican heritage and one of the most popular commonly recurring characters in her work is Chucho, a rainbow colored pinata who maintains a positive outlook despite the inevitability of being broken. In 2019 BBaby participated in an @brandedarts curated project transforming the walls of the Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School on E 53rd St in South Central Los Angeles, and incorporated small Chucho figures riding on the backs of her fanciful child-pleasing creations.  @mrbbaby/

"NOW IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW . . ."
by Nunca
Born in a poor neighborhood of São Paolo, Brazil, Francisco Rodrigues da Silva, aka Nunca, became a member of a graffiti crew at age 12. Applying those same skills to an antique etching technique reminiscent of the conquistador's portraits in the New World, @UrbanNation_Berlin says Nunca's (Portuguese for "never") portrayals of indigenous people, blending Brazilian iconography with modern treatments, lifted him to fame at home—and abroad, brought him to the Tate Modern for the first major display of street art in a London museum. In 2019 Nunca participated in a @BrandedArts project transforming Dr Maya Angelou Community High School in South Central Los Angeles. Incorporating the words of Dr Angelou, this visual message about the importance of knowing our ancestors and our history is on E 54th St on the back of the school.  @nunca.art/

"WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS"
by Axel Void
Alejandro Hugo Dorda Mevs, aka Axel Void, was born in Miami to a Haitian mother and Spanish father, and grew up in Spain eventually returning to Miami in his mid-20s. A few days before he was scheduled to participate in the @BrandedArts curated Maya Angelou Mural Festival in May, 2019, he took a walk through the South Central Los Angeles neighborhood surrounding the E 53rd St @Dr.MayaAngelouHS. Void began chatting with a Mexican American family cooking in their front yard and was soon invited to share their meal and conversation. Void's picture of 4-year-old Nico jumping into frame in the sunshine in front of the family captured the simplicity of every day life and the underlying truth that when we spend time getting to know people our differences "only serve as a strong link for interaction and conversation."  @axelvoid/
