I will never read homestuck but I did as a teen sometimes engage with the fandom a bit, part of which was watching a "which song fits this homestuck pairing" vid on YouTube (that I stumbled upon because its creator had also made a vid like it for Hetalia which was my main fandom back then) and I don't remember much, but I remember there being a karkat x karkat pairing with one of them love/hate songs. I never looked into it but in the back of my mind I did always wonder if there was a canonical cloning (or timelines, etc) plot or if it was a fanon thing and their dynamic was based on his self hatred. I guess if you desperately wanna answer homestuck questions... this is the one that I have.
it’s partially fanon & based off of self-hatred, but this actually originates from the comic itself.
part of the comic focuses on the twelve trolls (Karkat & his friends) and across their adventure one of the dumb escapades they get involved in is time-travelling chat room clients that allow them to hold conversations between future (or past) versions of themselves. the only thing about this is that these futures are absolute — if you have a conversation with yourself and he’s being this huge tool for no reason, then it doesn’t matter how much you dedicate your life to preventing yourself from becoming that huge tool, it will inevitably happen. for this reason, most of the characters choose to not talk to themselves in other parts of the time stream because it causes unnecessary annoyances like this. Karkat, however, can never walk away from a fight, and constantly found himself getting into huge plosive altercations with his past and future selves.
because in troll culture, romance is more complicated and multifaceted, arguing can (& often is) be seen as a form of flirting, due to an entire branch of troll hate-romance called kismesis.
this ship, unfortunately, has a canon basis.
Karkat does actually also clone himself (other characters do too, it’s an integral part of how characters’ adventures are supposed to progress in the story actually), but that’s a totally different thing, because that clone ended up paradoxically literally being himself rather than just a copy. but that’s a whole different story thst somebody will have to ask about if they want to hear it; i’m not explaining paradox clones & ectobiology unprompted

Can you do a oneshot for Karkat x reader w/ mistleteo theme ? Maybe the reader wants karkat to discover this tradition ? Thanks \o/
Oh. My. God. Yes!
♋ Karkat Vantas x Reader Oneshot Mistletoe ❤
It was winter. You were preparing the house for Christmas. Karkat has been watching you. He tried to help you, but you said that you had everything under control. He didn't argue with you. You really did manage to decorate the house much better than him. His eyes caught a strange plant that was hanging from the ceiling.
"WHAT IS THIS THING?"
"Oh, it's mistletoe, come here, I'll show you how it works"
Karkat has come up to you. You took his hands in yours and kissed him on the lips. It was a quick kiss, but even it made Karkat blush.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
"It's such a tradition to kiss under the mistletoe"
You smiled innocently. You liked to embarrass Karkat.
"WHY KISS UNDER A GREEN BRANCH?"
"Well, to be honest, I don't know, it's just such a tradition"
You smiled. Karkat didn't want to admit it, but he liked this tradition.

🌹💓for hnk and 👀💚 for homestuck?
HnK:
🌹OTP: Cinnaphos! Grumpy one x sunshine one is my favorite dynamic, and the two have parallel stories. They both started as outcasts and dealt with similar issues despite their branching paths. My poor heart aches for all the moments they've shared.
💓 Ship I didn't expect to ship: Cinnabortz! I didn't really like Bortz or understand their character until later volumes which is around the same time they partnered with Cinnabar. The two of them have surprising chemistry and seem to help each other overcome their flaws. Cinnabar grew less insecure and Bortz became better at expressing themselves and learning when to show kindness. Also, Phosbata is something I don't ship but think is oddly cute. There's a handful of good fanart floating around that got me thinking about it.
Homestuck:
👀 Ship I'm curious about: Vrisrezi, I suppose? The impression I got from Homestuck is that Terezi needs to move on from Vriska, but recent material seems to suggest the opposite. I have a hard time seeing the appeal of the ship. It seems extremely one-sided to an unhealthy degree. Maybe I read their interactions wrong, who knows?
💚 Ship that you secretly like: Kismesis Vriskat. They've got a hilarious leaderly rivalry going on, and literally all of their conversations involve Karkat trying to insult her while Vriska flirts with him to be annoying. Hell, Kanaya starts to suspect that Karkat might have a black crush. Vriskat would be a chance to show what a healthy kismesis looks like.

Alive, indefinitely.
I.
So, since I’ve been dutifully informed that since this is my blog and I can post hwhatever I want, I thought I’d talk a little about my ‘fic ‘Alive, indefinitely’.
The ‘fic was birthed by me realizing the implications of Hussie’s revision that all burgundy bloods have the ability to commune with the dead. For the most part, I dislike his changes where the trolls from Homestuck proper become near stock representatives of their entire bloodcaste, but at least, this one has compelling subtext instead of just seeming lazy. And it is that the bloodcaste that has the ability to commune with the dead is also the bloodcaste that lives the shortest and is the most likely to have friends and acquaintences who die often.
And who better explore that topic than Aradia? So I wrote the ‘fic, and it did branch out to be about her, partially as her role as a rustblood on Alternia. And so it grew bigger than just exploring the subtext. I knew I wanted it in little numbered parts that made vignettes, as I’d been working on writing longer stories and was worried I was losing my edge in vignettes and short fiction. Though the resulting ‘fic ended up 1,677 words (I intended to keep it under 1,000, though I’m not disappointed!), I’m still very satisfied with it and think the vignettes work. With the numbering of the vignettes, I also wanted to do an sort of Epileptic Bicycle and start skipping around numbers, to show that there was different amounts of time passing, and that things were happening in between. And because I just thought it was neat. The idea of a story with missing numbered chapters is very compelling. And anyway, I did have a skip, with the penultimate vignette being 5, and the ultimate being 10 (which upon thought really does make the ‘a lifetime later’ after the 10 work out mathematically*), but it played nowhere near as a big role as I would want to. Maybe some other time.
*Which since all the numbers are roman numerals, 10 ends up being ‘x’, which as a symbol is associated with death. I planned none of that (or at least I don’t remember it consciously) but I will take credit, regardless.
II.
For a second I thought Tumblr was more competent than it is, so I tried to insert a line break, but Tumblr is not competent, so have a fancy second section with big roman numerals instead.
Anyway, I’m just going to note and comment on some specific parts of the passage, because I can.
The internet is wide and wonderful, and it is through there that she learns about archaeology, the wonders lying just beneath the ground and thinks, to be an archaeologist would be an awfully grand adventure.
What Aradia thinks is a fairly straightforward play on the phrase, ‘to die would be an awfully grand adventure’. It's a neat way to both tie back the theme, and it also spared me from figuring out exactly how to phrase it.
She finds especially good company with one boy, his troll tag resting at the top of her chumproll. He’s a rustblood like her, a bit reserved but passionate about the mystery book he’s writing. Occasionally he sends her snippets from it, and while it’s a bit clumsy, he is always eager to hear about her archaeological expeditions, so she never mentions it.
When I wrote this part, I suddenly realized I needed an unnamed rustblood to die. I also realized it would be a good idea to also characterize him a little bit before killing him off, so you get at least the idea of what his and Aradia’s relationship was like, so I decided to use one of my long-derelict fantrolls.
So she starts to rebel. She grows her hair out, longer than the modest shoulder-length cut she had before. She lets it become wild, a sign of her own spirit and power. She starts painting her lips and lining her eyes in burgundy, a mockery of the high bloods who wear their blue hues as a fashion statement.
This is a combination of two of my headcanons about Alternian society: that long, wild hair is seen as a sign of power and sexuality (as expressed by the Condesce and other highbloods), and that wearing hemo lipstick and eyeliner is a high blood fashion trend.
When she is five sweeps old, she makes another close friend. He’s a bit shy, but unapologetic about what he likes – his fiduspawn collection, pupa pan, FLARPing – and that, as much as she loves Sollux, is a breath of fresh air.
Tavros is often done dirty by fanfic and fan-interpretations of Homestuck, and it often intertwines with apologism for Vriska and her abuse of him. He’s treated as a perpetually and naturally weak and insignificant, when having a person who is abusive like Vriska will make anyone unsure and rattled like that. It takes some digging, as the majority of Homestuck takes after Vriska’s batted around Tavros for quite a while, but underneath her abuse (and the effects from that abuse at the hands of Alternian culture) it’s clear that he’s still that unapologetically dorky kid, and even cocky at times. In his trollhandle adiosToreador, he’s not the Toreador - he’s the bull. And hopefully I could express that well in the space that I could.
She befriends Karkat through Sollux, and Terezi through Karkat, and it’s through Terezi that she learns about Vriska.
This is one of several sentences in this ‘fic that employ a certain sense of repetition and rhythm. Part of that is because it gives a motif of time, which is tied to death and destruction in Homestuck, and the other half is because I just... really like writing ‘em.
She still talks with Tavros, however, but now he’s uncertain, hesitant and ashamed, and a fair number of times when she trolls him he doesn’t reply, and when he does more than anything he talks about the things he’s experienced in his dreams, and she knows exactly who has been trolling him even if he doesn’t say it and –
– and Aradia watches her friend become a living ghost, bit by bit.
This is place where I forwent canon the most, earning the ‘fic its ‘mild timeline fudgery’ tag. Throughout writing this ‘fic I constantly had a tab open to either a page in Homestuck or the wiki, or both, in order to make sure I stayed as accurate to Alternian culture that I could (at least, in Homestuck proper). While there were a lot of gaps that I got fill in for myself, it’s just plain canon that Aradia sends the ghosts after Vriska immediately after she knows that Tavros is likely going to be paraplegic for the rest of his life. But I had written the sentence already (one of my favourite lines, really), and it just makes for a better story, at least in this ‘fic. So I kept it like that. There’s also a sort of cut-and-paste fudge in that sentence, too. I remembered that Tavros spent most of his time dreaming on Prospit just so he didn’t have to deal with Vriska’s abuse, but as it turns out, it happens after she god-tiers. So I just turned it into regular dreaming and thereby folded into the above canon discrepancy. But it’s definitely based on that later detail.
iv.
The shock of seeing Sollux actually at her hive is quickly overtaken by the shock that courses through her veins right after she realizes what is about to happen, and far too late to do anything about it.
I knew pretty early that I wanted the vignette of her death to be one sentence long, though I certainly ended up stretching that one sentence fairly far. Either way, it’s very isolated from the rest of the ‘fic, which is fairly on-par for the ‘fic style where a particularly hard-hitting or important sentence gets its own paragraph. Anyway, everyone knows how the story ends, and it’s sudden for Aradia, so I think putting it in one sentence both works structurally and artistically.
She’s tired of temporal inevitability.
She’s free of the endless orders and voices of the dead.
She, for the first time in her life, feels truly alive.
Instead of the pale shadows that clung to her hive, the hollow ghosts that people left behind, the dream bubbles are filled with countless iterations of her friends, and numerous others.
But even then, dying and waking up in foreign surroundings is a shock.
And really, there’s no-one else who would be a better guide to greet the dead.
At this point, I feel again, that going into detail would be dragging things out. I also wanted it to feel significantly different from the rest. So, where the other parts of the story are told through a sort of rolling tone of voice, through ‘the lens of age old history’ the rather straightforward sentences here are meant to sound very present.

Boots reads Homestuck Epilogue part... one..??
Tumblr media
Alright, let’s do this.  As I’ve said, the page after this one is all I’ve seen, I’m diving in unspoiled.  Also I gather from some of the non-spoilery chatter I’ve heard from my friends -- one of which warned me this sort of thing was coming a couple weeks ago, and I believed them (but didn’t want to) -- that this first epilogue-upd8 may not be the only epilogue-upd8, which isn’t surprising either given how Andrew works.
Alright, let’s go.  Hope my stomach can take it!
So, Page 1, the mock-AO3 page that’s the only thing I’ve seen before posting this.  The content warning is EXCELLENT, and gives me hope that this will be the usual Hussie-caliber and more humorous than heartwrenching.  :)
It also makes some serious sense that there would be multiple epilogues; from the sound of the summary, this one might focus more on John and then leave ample opportunity to discuss the others.
Let’s click page 2 -- oh, or contents: “Prologue”, this being a chapter list for this is another way to do it.  Clicking Prologue.......
Okay wow, this is novel format for the moment.  Good chance it won’t stay that way.
These first two paragraphs are well-written and ominous, sure -- describing stuff we pretty much already knew was happening, in different words -- but even though the writing isn’t really pretentious, there’s still a good chance Andrew *views* it as pretentious enough to find cutting away to art-style instead hilarious.  Onto the third paragraph...
Music and Calliopes the other Calliope is conducting, yeah... Oh, there’s a garbage disposal reference.  In regards to a black hole.  Like the one I kind of pointed to during Dave’s intro sequence in the Third Scratch theory and stuff in all those big theories.  The ones I was, er, wrong about... ahem.  Moving on.
“Your name is John Egbert, and you have just had a terrible, deeply pretentious nightmare.”
Pfffffffff  :D
I love you Andrew Hussie.  Reading on...
YES I see chat colors. Chat colors!!! I need chat colors.  Reading reading reading let me get down to them let me
Absolutely nothing of note has ever happened here in the entire history of the planet, which you would know, because you created it.
Baahahahahah.  :D
Okay yes I’m at the phone-sterlog.
Uh oh.
I am reading elevated levels of angst compared to usual pesterlogs in this log.  Which is to say, virtually any at all, really.  THAT doesn’t bode well for the outcome/overall tone of this epilogue.  :X  --Not to say it isn’t *appropriate*, given they still haven’t fixed/resewn Paradox Space together, but... yeah, *future feels* are popping up on the radar, that’s what I’m worried about.  I loved the tone of the snapchats and the feeling that everything was going to be fine, especially given how the ending “not being what I expected” shook me a fair bit, but to look forward to when that may end... D:
Yeah, Rose having some serious visions about some unfinished business they need to get around to instead of just fucking around and living their lives makes sense.  :X  --or at least some timeline version of them.  I’m imagining they’re living varied, excellent lives in a whole TON of timelines of promise that commit our imaginings of their potential futures to virtual canon, really, with the main thread that ties off Caliborn’s stage play almost irrelevant in comparison... that was kind of the whole point of the Ending of homestuck earlier, of that final anime flash, the fact that the victory and planet and *lives* they won meant a whole lot more than whatever Lord English’s irrelevant machinations were.
So... returning to the tail end of that main thread and seeing how *serious* it might be....... yeah. Kinda mildly panic-inducing. :XXX
You move the phone away from your ear and assume an expression you haven’t practiced in years. It is the look of a man who actually has something to do.
Okay that was good.
Ah, he’s twenty-three now!
Let’s click the next link. ==>
Fuck let’s not recount Rose’s substance abuse.
Oh, cool. Er, “cool”. Rose is getting some of Rosejaspersprite^2′s awareness of all her alternate-timeline doomed selves and their lives.  No wonder she’s worried about the substance abuse she technically mostly *avoided* in this timeline.
Light explicitly relating to knowledge, good.  That’s a nice aspect tidbit to have reiterated.
ROSE: There’s a different scale I’ve come to understand. Another dichotomy that’s less... emotional, I guess? ROSE: Consider, instead of the word “good,” using the word “essential.” ROSE: And what exists at the opposite polarity from essential is... ROSE: Something that is best not to contemplate.
ooh.  oooooh. holy shit.
okay NO, BOOTS/BKEW.  DON’T GET FUCKING EXCITED.
DON’T get excited.
It only SOUNDS like she’s learned to recontextualize the whole adventure in the rich context of the classpect system, that’s just your wild fanfic-y theoryimagination talking.  Shoosh.  (Even though she IS very, very, *very* clearly referencing the Light/Void dichotomy with the above quote.)  Just... tamp down your hopes, Boots.  Leave it at MILD hope.  Like cool porridge.
Reading on.
Alright, yeah, this universe exists beyond the timespan of the Green Sun’s influence.  Unsurprising, since it was heavily implied.  And she doesn’t have access to her expanded Green Sun powerset while *in* such a universe, which was also heavily implied by alt!Calliope or her denizen or I forget the exact conversation where it said she’d have to make the final journey without Green Sun powers or whatever.  That’s cool.  (Though having it spelled out more explicitly than usual does make it more awkward to have her use her powers for humorous purposes on MXRP in the future.)
OOOH DAVE KARKAT AND JADE ARE IN A PERPLEXING SOCIAL ARRANGEMENT YESSSSS  :D
Best news.  Okay reading on.
ROSE: You will need to travel back into canon and defeat Lord English.
Yeah I guess.
Again, the way the ending sort of put it was that..... our heroes did have to defeat Lord English eventually?  Or set right some prior stuff like doing the stage play?  But that part of the point of this whole story -- the Ultimate Reward -- was that it didn’t really matter, because they had earned nigh-infinite branching timelines of promise in a brand new universe where they could go YEARS AND YEARS living their lives in many of the ways they wished, richly enjoying themselves and starting civilizations that would last billions of years, loving and living and experiencing, only “needing” to go finally check off these other responsibilities in a single timeline of promise at the end of an extended period of vacation they chose with no particular urgency.  Branching years-and-years of essentially heaven as long as they EVENTUALLY fulfilled that particular endpoint, and they knew it.  More or less.
Rose phrases it pretty explicitly, though.  John’s powers are the only thing that can warp people through canon like that without restriction, so he was always to be involved, but... *he* needs to defeat him?  Does that mean alone?
JOHN: yeah, i had a feeling that was going to come up again someday. ROSE: I’m sure we all did. That is, even those of us without visions. JOHN: i was doing my best not to think about it. i guess we can’t put it off any longer then? ROSE: Now is the time. We are rapidly approaching a point of no return. If the decision isn’t made soon, it will be too late. The issue will no longer matter. JOHN: when exactly is the point of no return? ROSE: Today. JOHN: wow. JOHN: ok then.
Ouch.
That’s slightly more abrupt than the picture of branching bliss I just painted.
JOHN: fine? ROSE: Of course everything is fine here. ROSE: We’re outside of canon now. JOHN: yeah, i know. what does that actually MEAN though? JOHN: are you saying this isn’t really happening? ROSE: Of course it’s happening. ROSE: Just because certain events take place outside of canon, it doesn’t mean those events are non-canon. JOHN: oh. ROSE: In other words, there is an important distinction between events which can be considered to occur inside canon, outside canon, and those which are not canon at all. ROSE: The day we went through that door and claimed our reward, we passed a threshold between continua marked by differing degrees of relevance, truth, and essentiality.
Well okay then.  I was wondering why she used the word “canon”.  They literally DID escape the narrative literally as *well* as figuratively with that Juju, then, Neverending Story style.
Also, Light being highly tied to canon and Rose having spent so much time outside of it... yeah, I can understand the headaches more, too.
Alright, reading on, it seems Andrew is using Rose to more explicitly explain how he intends all the non-canon stuff he’s presented to us to “matter”, for those who didn’t quite get or fully believe the implied explanation from context towards the end of the story.
Heh, so the idea is that the urgency comes from “it’s been too fucking long since the story ended, and this epilogue needs to come out when an epilogue would still matter to anyone”.  That’s kind of brilliant.
ROSE: As long as we live outside canon, everything that happens will technically be “real,” but only conditionally. ROSE: There are certain crucial events inside canon which must happen in order to continue to prop up the legitimacy of events here on Earth C. ROSE: And you specifically, John, have a responsibility to make sure those events take place.
Closing threads closing threads CLOSING THREADS :D !!!!!!
FUCK is this epilogue going to be mostly devoted to TYING UP LOOSE ENDS and clarifying stuff??? :D  Like the HUNDREDS OF LOOSE ENDS that were left unanswered because the ending tried to paint it all as sidelined/irrelevant regardless of the fact that they hadn’t been answered/fulfilled, which had previously pretty much traumatized me around Homestuck’s end because I was (1) so used to Andrew expertly tying up almost every loose end eventually and (2) was a theorycrafter with explicit investment in the idea that Classes, Aspects, and most of these loose ends actually DID matter???  :D
Sign me the fuck up!!!  :DDDD
...I know it’s doubtfully going to be anything close to all I hoped for, but still.  Answers, contextualization, and John tying up loose threads.  Like that final frog warped in front of Jade as a child.  That’s good, that’s VERY good.  I’m excited instead of nauseous.  :D
--and yeah, reading on, Rose makes more explicit what I said earlier that the justification Andrew’s painting for this is “we have to wrap up all these loose ends before everyone forgets about Homestuck.”  That is hilarious.
Okay, so the juju is a big plothole. Heheh.  We’ve heard it called that earlier.
...Oh.  Oh huh.
Rose is pretty much explicitly talking about the stage play consisting of a bunch of non-canon ALTERNATE VERSIONS of themselves that mean the original versions of them living happily in the new universe won’t actually die.  Holy shit.  I mean we theorized that for a TIME with some of them but THOSE loose ends (like Roxy still having her mask on) were closed up toward the end...  So instead, having it put THIS way (preserving our ideas of them living full lives post-victory), and not only that but having John DO all this stuff RIGHT NOW to fix things retroactively with some really well-written contextual clarification we’re bound to get to help with the closure... god DAMN.  This is really good.  This is going to make a LOT of people feel a whole lot better about Homestuck.  Like me.  :D
...Pff, some other girl is getting punched by John in the face again.  :D  Don’t worry, Rose isn’t saying that this is the Vriska punch at the beginning of the whole Retcon arc and that this epilogue somehow happened in the middle.  (I hope.)
...Yeah Rose implies heavily that John is gonna die his heroic death if he does this?  Or it’s meant to make us THINK she’s implying that.  Yeah.  And she feels pretty fucking horrible about what she’s asking John to go through regardless, so.  (Yeah, everyone looked pretty genuinely dead but a few at the end of the stage play, but it was pretty uncertain.)  Either way, she’s acting like John isn’t going to “come back”, even if he lives through this.
Stupid feels.
Clicking the next link.  ==>
Hiiii roxy and callie!!! :D
Yes how polite of them.
“Ultimate self”?  Yeah, a sort of synthesizing of all the offshoots of her Heart and Mind, pulling it all together and realizing the full person she is and sum of her whole experience across all timelines, pasts and futures.  Yeesh.  Pretty uncomfortable for someone who ain’t a hypersprite.
...Roxy and Rose aren’t as close?  Is it because of the substance abuse, because of the Light/Void dichotomy literally-or-metaphorically distancing them (with how disparaging Rose just was about anything that isn’t relevant), or something else?
Ah, Kanaya hogged her until she got “sick”, that explains some of it too.
A bell tower? (DOOONNNNGGG)
Fffff interpersonal relationship mildangst.  Fuck
You and all your friends have dispositions affected by your classes and aspects. You think you know what that means in your case. But what about her? You can only speculate. Void is a place where things sink and disappear. Where they linger forever, but cease to exist. You aren’t actually sure if your feelings for Roxy ever really faded, or if they just grew numb with time and distance. Is it the same for her?
Holy fucking shit.  What a big middle finger to everyone who told me aspects didn’t matter to their personalities.  :D
...Though, I think he has it kind of backwards, since he still doesn’t totally understand all this business.  It’s easy for those in canon, introduced to this subject, to think that the classes and aspects affect their dispositions, to an extent where the reality (at least I contend) is that it was their natural dispositions in the first place that the classes and aspects were actually describing.  The power that was latent in their very personalities and tendencies to action all along.
Reading... Ah, yeah, a choice.  Was pretty sure this terminology would be important earlier.  It depends on what SORT of choice this is though... see, so far, Rose hasn’t given John a lot of really EXPLICIT motivation to go through with this, other than some mumbo-jumbo that would supposedly be “bad”.  And it doesn’t even address the black hole in his nightmares.  And here, we have Roxy and others explicitly encouraging him with regard to the fact that he can choose NOT to do this if he wants to.
The main question it brings up (to the future of this epilogue, how it’s going to be considered afterward, etc) is if this is the sort of Choice that John would always say yes to -- in which case it’s more canon than anything else -- or if he will end up being on the fence enough for a Terezi-style Mind-split.  Because this would be the PERFECT out to have him “die” in canon.  See, if he’s on the fence ENOUGH about going, then he creates two timelines that even both potentially have promise within the confines of this universe (since universes hold more than one timeline of promise, according to one of the Calliopes I think)--  One where he lives here, happily ever after with everyone, and another where he completes his Heroic death in canon to fix everything.  It would let Andrew kill John in this epilogue while still letting him live out eternity with everyone else outside “canon”.
He’d get to have his John-death and keep him too!  Seems plausible enough.
Anyway. Reading... it looks like they know more about this decision that Rose has told them, including the consequences Rose might have been dreading.  And likely know that IF John might die doing this, that it won’t be in a way that he regrets.
Oh wow, that whole Meat or Candy sequence is GREAT.  Silly to the core, and yet perfectly emphasizing the debate that... well, I mean, think about what Andrew’s been telling us all along.
He keeps TRYING to tell us that non-canon stuff is fine.  Trying to use that huge ending sequence of Homestuck to try and tell us that the fact that everyone is FREE from this story and its confines, free for everyone to imagine COUNTLESS ways things played out afterward for ALL these lovable characters in carefree futures, is almost MORE important than any of these stupid loose ends.  But some of us were really cut by that ending, the insistence that the actual final battle “didn’t matter” and that this escaped-from-canon existence was the true victory.  But if Andrew just upped and drew a bunch of bonus pages to start explaining more story, THAT would cheapen the escape-from-canon ending he wanted even as it satisfied those of us who wanted ends tied up, who wanted questions answered.  He had to find a very careful, very well done way to give us BOTH.  To write out the real “ending” of “canon” for those of us who needed it, without compromising the ESCAPE from the very necessity of it that was the essential point he WANTED to make with Homestuck’s story from the very beginning.  To carefully keep the endless branches of post-victory possibility and play intact while still, separately and with explicit hedging and qualifications, give us the potential results of one last canon thread to tie up the lingering questions that he so dearly wants us to recognize still “don’t matter” as much in the vast scheme of things.
And he’s doing it.  And it’s WORKING.
Holy SHIT.
I am excited for Homestuck.  I am excited for Homestuck for the first time in years, and my nausea is gone.
I’m not going to start theorizing again; that’s over.  But I’m definitely going to keep reading as the new Epilogue chapters come out, and do so with a spring in my step.
To Be Continued.  :D

Homestuck Secret Santa 2016
gift fic for @cronnchy– happy holidays!! (and sorry for the lateness ;;)
Dave’s first Christmas was fucked up.
Of course, it was probably unfair to put undue emphasis on his first Christmas. Upon further examination, it was safe to say that his second, third, fourth, and every Christmas of his thirteen years of life was fucked up, not just the first one.
This wasn’t due to the custom-made Smuppet ornaments that adorned the Christmas cactus, or the stockings made of the same material as an anime body pillow, or even the severed horse head his bro gave him, wrapped in Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff wrapping paper, ala The Godfather (thankfully with a plush horse instead). No, all of these things might seem strange to an outsider, but Dave didn’t even bat an eye (not like anyone could tell, either, with his certified Coolkid aviators controlling his emotional output at all times. Instead, the most bizarre, the most outrageous part of his childhood Christmases was that there was never any snow.
As any resident of Satan’s Asshole, or the southern United States, could tell you, snow was a rare sight, not just at Christmas but at any time of year. Oh sure, it would occasionally fall in January or February, slushy, fake snow that would end up melted by the afternoon– but Dave had never even had that. Every Christmas it was hot enough outside that he could’ve walked around in a speedo or jumped into a lake without even the slightest fear of hypothermia, both things his bro had done one Christmas or another.
Dave wouldn’t even have been so bitter about it if the phrase “White Christmas” wasn’t tossed around so much, and if every goddamn Disney movie or Christmas card had to shove perfect snowy scenes in his face every December. Every time he watched a Christmas special and saw the children rolling around in the snow while sleigh bells jingled overhead, the more he realized there was something fundamentally wrong with his version of Christmas.
Well. Aside from the Smuppets.
To add to this predicament, every time Christmas rolled around in New York Rose was ass-deep in snow, so all of her messages contained some complaint about the nuclear family and capitalist vestige of a “perfect white Christmas”. Normally Dave would be down for shittalking capitalism with her, but he couldn’t help but be annoyed at her ungratefulness, since he’d give anything to get out of the literal hell that was Texas and into some snowy, wintery wonderland, filled with pine trees and mansions in the woods.
Thankfully, Jade shared his predicament. Living on a tropical island with no one but her grandpa (or so he had thought, at thirteen years old, only to learn that she’d been all by herself for years, which was worse) she had no snow, no cold weather at all, and none of the trappings of a regular Christmas. She’d spent her December sitting in the greenhouse with her enormous dogs, eating atomic steaks and decorating a twenty-foot tree with homemade ornaments. (Which didn’t sound so bad, actually.) The two of them had commiserated for years over their lack of snow on Christmas, although Jade didn’t object too much because the warm weather was optimal for plant-growing and she didn’t think she’d like snow all that much, really!
Finally, there was John, who, much in the same vein as Rose, was no help. Living in Washington meant he got a decent amount every year, perfectly blanketing his suburban neighborhood. Every year he had pictures of snowmen with funny disguises, or his attempt at drawing Nicholas Cage’s face in the snow. Rose may have had quantity, but John had quality; he could sled, ice-skate, and make snow angels without worrying about hypothermia the way she did.
He did, however, sympathize with Dave. “No snow?” he’d said, two days before Christmas as they chatted on Pesterchum. Flurries were coming down outside his window, while the sun shone vibrantly outside of Dave’s. “That sucks. You need to visit me when it’s snowing, I’ll show you how it’s done!”
“It doesn’t take a genius to run around in some powdery white shit,” he’d replied, “but I’ll hold you to that promise.”
The truth was, as a thirteen year old broiling with teen angst and grappling with an unresolved crush on his best friend, there was nothing Dave would’ve liked better than to fuck around in the snow with John in the Washington suburbia, living out every one of his Hallmark fantasies. How and when they would meet in person, Dave hadn’t figured out, but he was determined to make it happen.
And then the world ended, and he had other things to worry about.
x-x-x
By the time Dave sees snow for the first time, the world he knew is gone. It all went so quickly; the meteors, the egg, the sword through his bro’s chest and the feathery bird version of himself who tried to save John from dying and John himself, sending fireflies and wisps of wind all across their session as he ascended to the heavens or something like that. Technically they still haven’t met in person, although John and Davesprite have; he can’t help but be jealous of that fact  He still has that crush, but then again he doesn’t have much time to think or dwell on anything  (ironically since he now has literally nothing but time). Still, he can’t help but remember John’s words as he crunches through the snow of LOFAF.
It had been too long since they’d talked.
Dave had been working overtime, running around timelines and spinning his timetables enough to make him sick. He had twenty-one dead Johns at his doorstep and a dozen Roses and Jades spread out across doomed timelines, but for the moment, he was going frog-hunting.
While Jade scampered through the snow, searching for the key to their entire universe, Dave took in their snowy surroundings. Jade had already been on LOFAF for awhile, so none of it was new to her, but to Dave, it was a whole new world. The snow piled thick and soft in huge drifts, painting the world a stark white save for the green trees, bright red flowers, and occasional frog or hummingbird. In the distance, Jade’s tower stood like a beacon against the gray sky, the lights of Skaia twinkling softly in the distance.
What he would’ve given to have a planet like this instead of his hellscape of heat and clanging metal.
“Hey, Jade,” he’d said, lifting her to inspect the branches of a tree. “Have you made snowmen or gone sledding or anything yet?”
“I had a bit of fun when I first got on my planet!” she’d replied, shaking snow from her hair. “But there really hasn’t been time for that. Especially now… we’ve got to find that frog!”
“Oh, of course. But I dunno… it feels pretty damn Christmas-y to me, even though it’s April or something. Assuming anyone’s keeping track of arbitrary shit like that now. Don’t you think we should celebrate the Christmas we’ve been deprived of?”
It was at this point Jade looked over at him, looking more serious than he’d ever seen her, and said, “Of course we are.”
Thus, the Kringlefucker was born because they decided, shit, let’s be Santa, and through great abuse of alchemizing, a merry time was had by all. It wasn’t quite the Christmas Dave had envisioned before the game, but nonetheless he was content to sit with Jade on the roof of her tower around a shitty jpeg tree, watching the snow fall softly onto her silent planet.
“John and Rose should be here,” Jade said, echoing Dave’s train of thought perfectly. But instead of succumbing to sappiness, he’d shrugged.
“When we create the new world we can have as many Christmases as we want together. We can even invite those weird troll guys. But first…”
“But first, we have to find that frog!” Jade hopped to her feet. “Shall we go?”
“Yeah, let’s go.” He thought, in that moment, how thankful he was for Jade, and about how in the new world, he would’ve alchemized a sled for him and John, and how Rose would’ve been knitting away at ugly sweaters for all of them.
But, like usual, Dave didn’t have too much time to think or dwell on things. That was probably for the best.
Still, they couldn’t find those frogs fast enough.
x-x-x
The new world wasn’t exactly how Dave envisioned it.
There was a Scratch, and the Green Sun, and a bomb, and he and Rose godtiered and now they’re on a meteor hurtling through space with five gray alien trolls for three whole years, apparently. It would actually be a decent arrangement except for the fact that John and Jade were on their own ship, an actual golden boat, en route to the new session, and they won’t be able to see each other for those same three years. Nor would they be able to communicate– no Pesterchum, carrier pigeon, or Pony Express can help them now. The last semblance of communication they had was a letter in a bucket that caused Karkat to lose his shit, and that was it.
It was strange; Dave used to talk to John every single day on Pesterchum, talking about movies and webcomics and all manner of nonsensical things, filling pages and pages of Pesterchum with nothing. Dave would even keep writing after John had signed off, ranting and rambling and rapping, wondering if John even read all of those messages or just passed it off as the same bull he always spouted.
But all of that, only to lead to straight radio silence. Nothing. They weren’t going to be hearing from John and Jade for awhile, and he accepts that.
And frankly, the trolls weren’t too bad. Terezi was as weird as her messages had implied, which was a relief, and she licked any available surface, a habit so unhygienic and hazardous it was very distinctly Terezi. Her moirail, (whatever the fuck that meant) Vriska, was a shit-stirrer if Dave had ever seen one, and was also the troll who had guided John on his quest and fucked over their session in more than one universe.
The two of them made quite a pair, and despite Teresa’s tendency to not display any negative emotions, and the fact that Dave doubted if Vriska even had a soul at all, they seemed to care deeply together. They clearly had some history together, although Dave didn’t pry too much into details because the trolls had a lot of stories and they were all fucked up (and he’d find out eventually anyways).
As for Karkat and Kanaya, well, the former was loud and angry, about what Dave had expected, but they did adopt the disgustingly sweet habit of curling up on the couch to watch movies together, so he couldn’t be too annoyed by his short fuse and no indoor voice. As for Kanaya, she and Rose spent most of their time flirting in ways Dave didn’t really want to get involved in, but was sweet enough from afar.
And the less said about Gamzee, the better.
All in all, the meteor wasn’t exactly a terrible place to be, even if it did give them ample time to reflect on their shortcomings in the three years of doing jack shit.
It was hard to the gauge the passage of time when you’re essentially detached from it- unless you’re the Knight of Time, that is. Dave knew the time down to the exact second, which was why when Christmas came around he was the first to know.
“Holy shit,” he said, making Karkat look up from his romance novel. “It’s Christmas.”
“What the fuck is that?”
“There’s got to be some troll equivalent of it… you know, fat guy in a red suit gives you gifts, you song around a tree, you celebrate the birth of Christ?”
Karkat continued to stare at him.
“It’s that holiday you celebrate at the end of the year?”
“You’re probably thinking of Twelfth Perigree’s Eve, but that hasn’t happened yet and we don’t have any of the weird traditions you have.”
“I seriously doubt that.” Dave got to his feet. “Well, whatever. I’m going to go talk to Rose.”
Miraculously, Rose wasn’t already involved with Kanaya, so Dave sat right down, pushed her book away, and said,”Rose, it’s Christmas.”
“Is it really?”
“Try to contain all that enthusiasm, will you?”
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of religion in my youth, and my mother’s overabundance of Christmas spirit rather killed the holiday for me.”
“Goddamnit Rose; you’re the only one on this ship that knows what Christmas is.Give me some Christmas spirit won’t you?”
“Ho ho ho,” she said drily.
“Thanks,” Dave said. “First you don’t appreciate all the snow you got, and now you’re completely devoid of spirit… I feel so merry.”
“You wouldn’t like snow either if it trapped you inside your house with your overbearing and passive aggressive mother.” Rose replied, pulling her book back in front of her.
“Well I was trapped inside with my bro whether it was snowing or not, so it would’ve been nice to have a little Christmas cheer while we were at it.”
“Listen Dave, if you’re that set on celebrating Christmas then I’ll knit us some ugly sweaters and we can go about it, but I don’t think anyone else on this meteor would care.”
“The trolls apparently have their own version of Christmas, so we can celebrate that too I guess.” Dave slumped over the table. “I wonder if John and Jade are celebrating Christmas now…”
“Considering that time is lost to everybody but you, I’d say no.”
“It was worth a shot. Hey, are you going to start knitting those sweaters or not? We’re wasting the Christmas magic.”
“I don’t think Santa would approve of that attitude.” Rose began to reach for the needles and yarn that were sitting across the table from her.
“I’ll save some mistletoe for you and Kanaya, how about that?”
“So thoughtful.” Rose pulled out a red ball of yarn. “I’ll get some for you and John, then.”
“Good luck with that, when he’s essentially a universe away. Who said I still have my shitty thirteen year old crush, anyway?”
“Trust me, I know you.” Rose cast him a glance. “After all, we are siblings, aren’t we?”
Dave paused. “I guess we are… huh.”
“Something strange about that?”
“Nah,” Dave shut his mouth before he said something sappy or appeared emotionally vulnerable, both dangerous when Rose was in his presence.
When he had celebrated Christmas with Jade, there had been so much going on he hadn’t even had time to think, whereas now he had too much time to do so. For a moment, he’d wondered about his bro– remembered their past Christmases together– and had almost, for a moment…
But he still had a family.
(Even if, when it came to Christmas, she was incredibly sacrilegious and was only celebrating with him out of pity and probably a mockery of the whole thing.)
“You know, I at least wish it’d snow.”
“Maybe we’ll pass through a dream bubble or something.”
x-x-x
“Shouldn’t we start making up our own holidays?”
Karkat looked up from where he’d been fiddling with the hand-knitted sweater Rose had given him. “What?”
“I mean, we’re gods now, right? We can make whatever holidays we want. We can even send down our own baby Jesus, and make our own Christmas and with better traditions.”
“I think Christmas’s traditions are just fine!” Jade exclaimed from where she sat next to Karkat. “And I thought you liked Christmas, Dave.”
“I do,” Dave replied. “But I mean, it could use some updating. And not just Christmas, we can create holidays of our own–”
“I say we make Nic Cage’s birthday a national holiday,” volunteered John.
“Goddamnit John, I thought we were over this Nic Cage stuff,” Dave groaned. “The carapacians don’t even know who that is. You’ve gotta come up with something better than that, man.”
“I don’t think the carapacians really know or care about what we do!” Roxy said cheerfully, walking into the living room where most of them were assembled and handing them each a mug. “Here, take some of Janey’s special eggnog.”
“Is it alcohol?” John asked dubiously.
“Come on Johnny, live a little!” Roxy said, nudging him. She had on a santa hat and had somehow managed to wrap a festive string of lights around her entire person. “Actually, I don’t know what’s in, but Janey makes everything with love.”
“Bleh,” John said, even though he accepted a glass and took a hearty swig from it. “Well, at least it’s not cake.”
“There’s plenty of that too!” Jane called from the kitchen, to which John made a face.
Miraculously, they had all managed to gather together for Christmas this year, with both of those terms being used loosely. ‘Christmas’ had little meaning, with the trolls and Calliope having no connection to the holiday and the rest of them, being literal gods, attaching little religious significance to the holiday. And ‘this year’ had little bearing as well, given that they were all effectively immortal. However, they had all been relatively busy, making gathering in one place quite a challenge.
And yet, here they were. Rose, with Kanaya’s grudging help, had hand-knitted everyone a sweater, which they were all wearing, despite the relative heat of the indoors. Jane and her dad had been cooking away all day with Roxy and Calliope’s help (why she would want to cook after working all day was a mystery) and Jake and Dirk were gracing Terezi with the glory that was Christmas movies (even though Dave had already shown her Elf.) Vriska, whom Terezi had somehow rescued from the void, was trying to replace all of their Christmas decorations with Halloween ones, with Karkat yelling at her. Jade had coerced John into helping her wrap a mountain of presents, and for some reason two new trolls– Aradia and Sollux– had arrived, presumably also from the void, like Vriska, bearing gifts (while Aradia’s red getup did suspiciously resemble Santa’s, Sollux’s blind and irritable demeanor suggested nothing of the sort).
It was still surreal to Dave that they were all together– unharmed, alive, and relatively enjoying life. Of course, the trolls had to cope with the fact that their numbers had been depleted, making Dave glad he had managed to survive with John, Jade, and Rose all still alive. They’d had plenty of trials along the way, but somehow, they survived.
And now they were celebrating Christmas together, like he’d always wanted.
It was almost too cheesy and picture-perfect for Dave to stomach, but he figured they deserved it.
“Hey, guys!” The front door of John and Jane’s house, where they’d all been gathering, slammed open. Jake charged in, apparently finished with his movie marathon, his glasses askew and cheeks bright red. “It’s snowing out there!”
“That’s perfect!” Roxy cheered. “Snow on Christmas day. I never had that in the future, it was always hot as hell.”
“Same,” Dirk sighed.
“Well, that sucks,” John said. “In my neighborhood we always had plenty of snow!”
And suddenly, it comes back to him.
“No snow? That sucks. You need to visit me when it’s snowing, I’ll show you how it’s done!”
All those years of staring out a window, looking for a snowflake– either that, or a ticket to Washington. Of running through the snow, looking for frogs, or sitting through a dream bubble of that very illusion. Dave’s Christmas has been pretty damn perfect but there’s one thing he needs to complete it.
Abruptly, he stands, dragging John with him, much to the latter’s complaints. “Where are we going, I didn’t even get to finish the eggnog–”
“Shut up, I have to talk to you.” Dave dragged him from the living room, packed to the brim with people and presents and a giant tree, and to the front step, shutting the door behind them. His breath forms a cloud and he rubs his palms together. “Remember that one time when we were thirteen and we talked about having snow?”
John cocks his head and Dave realizes it’s too mundane a detail for him to remember. He’s about to backtrack when he nods and smiles, slightly bemused. “I think?”
“Well, you told me you’d show me the right way to play in the snow.” Dave turned towards the actual winter wonderland that is Can Town before him. “Now do your worst, Egbert.”
And just like that, John began laughing. There’s no one around and the sound echoes in the silent white landscape. “You really remember that?” he said, wiping his eyes, before shaking his head and saying, “And you don’t know how to play in the snow?”
“The last time I was in snow I was too busy frog-foraging to have time to frolic.” Dave kicked a pile of snow. “Look at all of this white shit. It’s blinding.”
“Well, if you really want me to show you….” John adjusted his glasses, which had fogged up slightly. “I hope you can keep up.”
“I’ve been ready since the day you told me.”
John smiled, and Dave tried to keep his heart from flipping over in his chest. “Then let’s go.”
They start with the basics– snowman making. Dave could deal with that, easy, and began applying his own artistic merit until there’s a giant Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff in the front yard. He and John almost began snowscaping Nic Cage’s face, a favorite winter pasttime of John’s, before he decided it would take too long. They moved on, now working on snow angels.
Dave was genuinely surprised by how enjoyable it was to lay on your back and wave your arms and legs. The result was something that didn’t exactly resemble an angel, and yet he felt a connection with Northerners he’d never felt before.
They lobbed snowballs at each other for a solid twenty minutes, almost ready to engage in full on turf warfare before John decided that it was time to move on lest they break a window, or each other’s nose. It was at this point that he declared it was time for his favorite activity.
“Sledding!” he announced, going through the shed, where somehow he found a battered red sled. “I have no idea why this is here… but whatever. Let’s go find the biggest hill we can!”
“Hell yeah,” Dave said. “See, this is the kind of winter activity I wanted to do. None of those lame snow-angels or whatever. It’s no fun until you can potentially throw yourself into a tree.”
“You loved the snow angels,” John said, rolling his eyes. “Anyways, let’s get going.”
(By then, they had completely forgotten about everybody inside the house. Dave would miss Jane’s Christmas cake, but it was for the best, since John would have undoubtedly run from the room screaming.)
“Huh…”
“What?” John said, as they trekked through the snowy woods. Can Town’s buildings glimmered in the distance as they mounted higher and higher up a hill, their feet crunching through the snow.
“I just… agh, never mind. It’s stupid.”
“Ok, now that you’ve said that, you have to tell me.” John waited, then sighed. “Daaaave…”
“Fine, ok. When we first entered the game, I got to have Christmas with Jade. And then, when we were on the meteor, I had it with Rose. So now, I thought, I finally get to have it with you.”
Silence lapsed over the two of them as they climbed the hill, Dave feeling his cheeks heating even more. He was just about to keel over in the snow when John finally said something.
“I guess you’re right,” he cast his eyes on the ground, breathing out small puffs. “But we’ll have plenty of time to spend together now, right?”
“Yeah…”
“You know,” John said, staring up at the cold winter sky. “I really missed you.”
Dave feels a culmination of years and years of jumbled emotions rise up in his throat, but instead of feeling choked by them, it’s like a weight has been lifted from his chest. “I missed you too.”
“Hey…” John said, gesturing in front of them. “We’ve reached the top of the hill! You ready to go?”
And in an instant, the moment between the two of them vanished. But instead of being disappointed, Dave can’t help but smile. Ever since reuniting they’d bounced between being best bros or being something more, something Dave had tortured himself with for years. But it was  Christmas, and there was snow,  and they had got years and years to figure it out, whatever “it” is. (Even if the mistletoe Rose had hung over the door would answer that question soon enough.)
Ultimately, it didn’t matter. Because Dave had plenty of time. And for once, there was nothing to worry about.

Possible Fics for the Future
Hey everybody! You probably know me as the guy that published Mutated Ectoplasm and Blending In, the two fics I consistently update!
...No? Well, okay, look those up on this blog. Low chance it’ll be part of your taste, but I think they’re good enough to try out. I’m just posting this up for my readers so they can help decide on what my next future project should be.
This’ll mostly be contained onto here to prevent people from using these ideas without my permission.
So, the ideas I currently have consist of this:
1. Homestuck x Fallout New Vegas
A. Follows the basic story of FNV, based on a roleplay playthrough I did myself. Story Focuses on Karkat Vantas as Courier Six, trying to figure out why he was shot.
B. Heavy on backstory and will include Trolls. Will attempt to try and add them in normally, but if things get to complicated, I might make them human.
C. Mostly established, actually has some content already. Will have to change it though since the original is in second person. It was an experiment that didn’t pan out, so I’d basically restart the thing.
2. Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy x RWBY
A. The Ed’s end up in Remnant for whatever reason, most likely due to a messed up invention that worked too well. They change some parts of the story due to their interference, maybe even avoid a death or two.
B. Somewhat established already with some ideas I’ve had, but no actual content written for it. I already know what I want for semblances and weapons for the Ed’s and some of the things they alter, but that’s ultimately it.
C. Not sure about this one due to the constantly changing story of the latter show. Might have to simplify it in order to deal with it, especially since it isn’t finished.
3. Homestuck X BNHA Crossover
A. This is a basic idea I’ve thought up of for a while. It’d be a little more original, following the basic idea that UA branches off into America, wanting to extend their teach methods across the world.
B. Karkat (surprising, I know) would be the main focus. He’d be Quirkless and trying to get into the hero course. Whether or not he applies directly or tries to transfer from support depends on how I think things up.
C. Maybe they’d get embroiled with whatever nonsense canonical 1-A gets involved in. Story hasn’t fully developed just yet.
4. Homestuck x Legend of Zelda
A. Not fully developed and barely any content for this one actually made. Karkat (I have a favorite character, if you can’t tell) is the new Ganon after an attempt to break the cycle was made. As a male Gerudo, he’s very noticeable, so he has to use the powers at his disposal to hide.
B. Of course, he can’t after some things start going wrong and he starts getting blamed for it. He tries to fix it with the new champions (set in BOTW universe?) and try to reset things to how they were.
C. More original, would require a lot of planning.
5. Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy x Fallout 4
A. Not very developed at all, only recently came up with the idea. The basic premise is that the Ed’s would take the place of the Sole Survivor, with an infant Sarah being taken by the Institute. They take a role in each faction in order to better their chances of finding Sarah.
B. Some changes would be made to the main story, some things actually followed up on. Kellog’s mind being in Nick, as one example, would be a way to go forward.
C. Would be very dark considering it’s Fallout. Can’t really say if it’d end happily, but I like those, so it would most likely be bitter sweet.
Ships and other stuff will be kept secret for now unless you feel it’s important. Feel free to comment!
