[part 2, this takes part in the aftermath of an ill-fated dinner between Katniss, Peeta, and the rest of the Mellark clan -- whether or not Peeta and Katniss are actually engaged at this point is up for interpretation, regardless, they're so obviously into each other it's just a natural thing to assume.]
Spruce sighed. He straightened his shoulders and climbed the creaky steps to the back of the bakery. He knocked. The door opened.
"Bran."
"Spruce."
They were silent. Baker and hunter staring at each other impassively. Spruce certainly wouldn't be the first to break the silence. He increasingly hardened his jaw the longer Bran went without speaking.
Finally, Bran broke eye contact. "I hope you know we're sorry."
"Do I?" Spruce raised his brows.
Bran met his gaze again. He looked apologetic and embarrassed, for whatever that was worth. "I apologized to Katniss personally--"
"I'm aware."
"And truly, I feel terrible. We would be lucky to welcome her into our family." Bran insisted.
"And yet your wife hasn't apologized to my little girl." Spruce's voice was unyielding. "I'm the last person who'll listen to any of that seam town crap, Bran. You mistreat my daughter you apologize. Simple as that."
"I know, and I'm sorry." Bran nodded. "But I can't force her to do anything."
"Alright, this is the end of our business, then." Spruce nodded. "I won't be by again. Can't say we'll miss you at the wedding."
Bran looked surprised. "But--"
"No reason to take it out on the boy. He can't help who his parents are." Spruce crossed his arms. "And he's got a new family anyhow."
Bran's eyes were complex. There was a vulnerability there that hardened. He nodded, "Alright."
Spruce nodded in return. He turned away from the bakery and made his way down the steps with care, mindful of his bum leg. He was halfway across the backyard when Bran called out to him again.
"Would you tell Peeta we miss him?"
Spruce paused. It was just like him to end up in the middle of another town family's dramatics. He turned his head slightly back towards the bakery. "Tell him yourself."

My headcannons about District 12
Katniss's parents' names are Ruth and Robin.
Ruth never knew that Peeta's father liked her. My boy never tried to get closer lol
The ages and names of the Mellark brothers are: Peeta (16y), Rye (18y) and Bran (21y)
Katniss's father was a leader among the miners, they spread words of revolt with music and tried to change the inhumane conditions in the mines. That's why he was killed with his colleagues in a fake accident.
The miners have work songs that they sing every morning on the way to the mines.
The water is very polluted because of coal mining waste in the rivers. You need to buy packaged water to drink.
Robin and Gale's father did not get along and always stole from each other's bushmeat customers, but they were friends during their childhood.
Gale's grandmother is Maude Ivory
Katniss and Gale are actually long distance cousins lol
Rory Hawthorne has a crush on Prim and kisses her in D13 (hihi 👉👈)
They have many respiratory illnesses because of the coal dust.
A tradition for boys who reach the age to work in the mines is to have their faces smeared with coal by their father.
The birth rate is high because the Capital does not provide any form or education for birth control
Most women have their first child at age 18.
Ruth's parents are alive and still keep the pharmacy running, but they refuse to talk to their daughter.
Peeta has many cousins.
Gale is very popular with girls, until kissing them. Because he's a really bad kisser lol
Katniss Everdeen is a legend! Everyone has heard of her. The girl who always shoots squirrels in the eyes.
There are many myths about forests, children are terrified of the sounds of wolves, they think they are monsters
There is a tradition that brides have to put flowers and herbs inside their bras on their wedding day to attract good luck.
The most stylish thing you can have in District 12 are cowboy boots. Everyone wants one, but only the richest kids have.
At school there are three types of sports that you can choose from: wrestling, running and distance jumping.

I was so intrigued by your world building in your FUHR fic! I can’t stop thinking about how they handle waste in Panem… I’m so glad District 14 wasn’t Katniss’s fate in your story! And In every universe, Peeta gives her hope 🩶
Thanks!
It's a good thing that Myrna Mellark didn't become the President of Panem.
Though that's up for debate. Peeta would be better off. And Katniss would be in D14.
It's also a good thing that Bran left her and moved to Kansas(D9)

Looking at an upcoming chapter of a WIP and found this bit:
Thought it was fun and could stand on it’s own…
They were interrupted by a blonde whirlwind. “Katniss!” Delly threw her arms around the surprised girl. Katniss took a step back, wrinkling her nose at the smell of the fruity liquor concoction coming from Delly’s cup. “Oh my God! I didn’t know you would be here tonight!” She pulled back from the embrace, giving a mischievous grin “You two look cozy.” She shimmied her shoulders as she spoke.
Katniss turned to look at Peeta in time to catch his wince. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to detain your wingman.”
She shook her head, curls bouncing “Nothing to be sorry about, I’m fine all on my own.” She spread her arms out, sloshing her drink and nearly hitting a passerby with the motion. Peeta plucked the drink from her grasp, placing it on a nearby side table. “It was actually Peeta I came to assist.” She gave Katniss an exaggerated wink.
Katniss scowled, “Well don’t let me keep you.” She crossed her arms, leaning back against the wall. Delly’s words felt like a dismissal. He was the one who came up to her, it was his own stupid fault he was talking to her instead of groping some coed. She quickly surveyed the room trying to guess who Delly had in mind for him.
In her inebriated state, Delly didn’t pick up on the tension. “Oh my god! You know what I just realized?” Eyes wide she looked between the two expectantly “You two could have been siblings? Isn’t that wild? Could you imagine?” As if following a different train of thought, she scrunched up her face, waving her hands in front of her face as if clearing the air “eww, you know what, never mind, that would have been really weird”
Peeta gave a half hearted laugh “Good one Dells.”
Katniss leaned into Peeta, holding her cup in front of her mouth to whisper in his ear “How hammered is she exactly?”
“Wait! Don’t you know?” She stared at Katniss, waiting for an answer to a question Katniss didn’t even understand.
“Delly” Peeta warned, a flash of panic in his eyes.
Delly either didn’t hear this caution or chose not to heed it.”Your mom and Peeta’s dad were high school sweethearts. If they would have gotten married you two would have been related!”
Peeta’s features relaxed as he let out a breathy laugh “I don’t think that’s how it works, Dells”
disregarding Peeta’s words, Delly continued. “I’m on yearbook, we have all the old copies in the archives and were looking up pictures from our parents Senior years. When we got to the superlatives of one of the books, bam” her fingers pantomimed an explosion “Cutest couple is a picture of a girl who looks just like Prim and boy who’s obviously a Mellark: Lily and Bran. I showed Prim and she said it’s your mom and I already knew Peeta’s dad’s name.” She finished with a flourish, obviously proud of her detective work.
This was news to Katniss. She looked back and forth from Delly to Peeta. Peeta gave her a sheepish grin and shrugged his shoulders, “my dad may have mentioned it a couple times.”
she wasn’t sure how to respond to that. “Oh” It seemed impolite to say her mother had never mentioned the baker except to compliment his bread. She gave a tight smile.
Delly wrapped her arms around each of the pair’s shoulders hugging them towards her familiarly. “I’m so glad you’re not related” then she gasped, tightening her grasp in her excitement. She dropped her voice to a stage whisper “Wouldn’t it be something if you two were class couple this year?”
Peeta chuckled, “I think you’re forgetting something Delly; That would require us to be a couple first” Katniss saw his eyes shift to her, quickly darting away when he caught her glance. The lights were low but she could swear he was blushing.
“Well that could be arranged.” Delly lifted an eyebrow in Katniss’s direction, “What do you say, Katniss? Do you want to date Peeta?”
“To win a Senior superlative?” Katniss was utterly baffled by the turn of events and this new information.
Delly was about to respond when she was surprised by Peeta’s arm around her shoulder. “Alright Dells, I think you've had enough tonight. Let’s get you out of here.” She was about to protest when Peeta cut in again “you hungry? Taco Bell maybe?” Delly, smitten with the image of limp tacos, happily nodded.
Peeta turned back towards Katniss. “Hey, sorry to run off like this. I had a nice time talking to you… this was fun?” It was a statement but came out as a question. He was smiling, but not the easy confident smile she was used to seeing flashed at his friends in the halls. It was sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushed through her. Maybe there was a reasonhe had spent his time talking to her tonight.
It had been fun, but Before she could process how to proceed, Delly, impatient from waiting, reached for her discarded drink cup. Peeta cut her off, maneuvering them towardsthe exit “Oops, you don’t need that. Let’s get you out of here. See ya around Katniss”
“Drive safe.” She called after the pair. She watched as they weaved through the crowd. Before they could make their escape, Peeta looked back one last time mouthing a ‘sorry’ and shooting her a sheepish grin.
She wasn’t sure what the hell had happened tonight, but she couldn’t help smiling in return.

HEADCANON
So I am currently writing a headcanon about Peeta's brothers and their complacency in his abuse and the difficulty of the family dynamic that is presented in Peeta's family. And I mention heavily how Peeta is the only named Mellark so I am going to name them.
Peeta's father is named Bran. He is the baker, he is the one that technically owns the bakery. He is the one that should be making the decisions. But as his name suggests he's a bit plain and can easily be overrun by other flavors aka people.
Peeta's mother is named Ginerva, Bran will often call her Gin when the time is right. Never in front of the kids. Her family owned the distillery as the only legal source of alcohol in district 12. She met Bran through their common usage of getting grain him for the bakery and her for hops used in beer. They settled for each other and were not in love, but the Bakery often did better than the distillery ever did.
Neither of Peeta's brothers will be named Rye the name that everyone seems to have settled on for Peeta's middle brother. I say this because it is my blog and I do what I want. Bri (prounounced like Br-eye) short for Brioche, is Peeta's oldest brother. He is more or less the golden child. Peeta's second brother is Griz short for Grissini. Griz doesn't have a whole lot of substance to him, and has to work at getting acknowledgement.
tl;dr: Peeta's family names
father: Bran
mother: Ginerva aka Gin
oldest: Brioche aka Bri
middle: Grissini aka Griz
youngest: Peeta :D
#two: headcanon#me: this is popular but i am going against the grain ahahaha#and still going with puns

The Hunger Games characters have some unique names based on many cultures we've lived in today.
What's your favourite character names from THG world? What's their names meaning?
Bonus questions :
If you're a fanfic writer writing about characters who lives in Panem, what's their name gonna be?
If you're a reader, what's a name you read in a THG fanfic that stuck with you?
Thank you, @curiousnonny
Hello there @curiousnonny ,
It took me a while to answer this as I looked through my culture for anything related to THG names but lo and behold, I come up with nothing. I'm from southeast Asia and I suppose SC didn't quite pluck out names from this region. I might also be very wrong 😁
My favourite THG name is Haymitch. Katniss and Peeta are a given because I love their characters, of course. Haymitch is very unique sounding to me.
I looked it up a bit and saw that it was close to 'Hamish' which in Arabic means edge or corner. This was a nice discovery because looking for the edge or end of the arena was Haymitch's strategy on the 2nd QQ. He was also in a cliff/ edge where the axe bounced back from a force field, killing his last opponent. Interesting, huh? 😊
As for the names when I write, I use Free and Julian for my toastbabies. I haven't actually posted my story with those names yet. They are still in my WIP folder, but I hold those names dearly.
Free means to love, dear, or beloved. Being the daughter of two victors and born in a peaceful Panem, Free is free to love whoever or to choose whatever she wants to be. She, being the first child, is also dearly loved.
Julian means youthful, young, or downy-bearded. He is the wild son of Katniss and Peeta. Also, a free spirit. Climbing book cabinets and eating soil 😁 He also loves art like his Papa.
As a reader, I have always liked nature names. Or two names like Katniss May, or Beatrice June. Bread names are cool, and Rye, Wheaton, Graham, and Bran are often Mellark names. Katniss' mom is named Lavender or Lily in a few fics.
I suppose that's it. This is such an interesting question and thank you for asking it!
Take care, @curiousnonny 😉

Mitch and Maysie, a Hunger Games headcanon
(Warning for some amatonormative thoughts Haymitch has towards himself)
The outlier districts are more conservative.
Haymitch Abernathy grew up thinking it strange that he never had crushes on anyone (when even his kid brother ran away after giving a little girl flowers) or took anyone to the slag heap (when even Bannock Mellark took Daphne Lipp), but he thought he had to date someone.
If it has to be someone, it’ll be someone who he can actually stand, was his rationale, so that fell onto his only friend, Maysilee.
She snuck toffees for him to take home to his little brother behind the counter despite how her sister Marjorie would glare. (He rarely sees Maysilee’s other best friend, but he always snuck for Larkspur Everdeen a stack of bank notes so her littlest daughter could get some more food. That’s the best he could do)
She was the only audience to ever hear him play the fiddle, and danced to match. (At his kid’s toasting he does dance. It should be Abram Everdeen in his place, but still.)
On rainy days they sat together looking out the window of her upstairs bedroom. (He sees the boy and the girl’s silhouettes in the door of Katniss’ house and decides against an extra bottle of whiskey)
They snuck out the district fences following Abram Everdeen to decorate the pine trees the way people did before the Dark Days. (Willow and Bran come to tell Grandpa Haymitch what they learned at school : back when this district was still called Virginia, there was a tradition called Christmas)
He didn‘t even let his brother or ma call him Mitch, only her, for she was Maysie. (That one privilege, though, was never given to anyone else)
They never kissed, or went further, but make no mistake - that kind of love wasn’t the only kind.
They agreed to pretend to not know each other in the Arena, only making an alliance as if they were strangers who just happened to be from the same district.
The Games took his girl.

Since I think that Katniss has a hatred (or at least strong dislike) of fashion in almost any AU, I would love to see what you do with “I swear to god, I’ll beat you to death with my high heels, if you don’t shut the fuck up. ” from the one-liners prompt list!
First, I'm sorry for the tardiness! However, this idea has been kind of stewing in my head in-between book editing and life.
I think there could be more...?
Also, thank you @jedimandy for the prompt!
Summary: Peeta Mellark returns home for the one wedding he never wanted to attend. Everlark.
------
Stepping out of his car, Peeta took a breath before heading toward the two-story colonial house. It had been years since he had been here, but the place looked as fresh and new as the day that his family moved in.
“Hey loser!” Turning, Peeta was greeted with the familiar grin of his childhood friend, Gale. The man strode towards him, pulling him into his strong embrace as soon as they were within arms’ reach. “It’s been ages, bro! How are you?”
He smiled tiredly at Gale. “Exhausted after a 12-hour flight.” His gaze went to the house. “Now really ready to go in—”
Gale’s expression went somber. “I know it’s a hell of a reason to come back—”
“Yeah, but it’s not every day that your brother marries your high school sweetheart.” Peeta grimaced. “How bitter do I sound?”
His friend snorted. “Well, you definitely sound like you’re here under duress.”
“Mom guilt, you know.” He turned toward the house. “Better get in there.”
“Of course. Listen, Madge and I will be having some people over tomorrow night for dinner. We’d love for you to come.”
Nodding, Peeta smiled at the man.
“I’ll be there. I mean, everyone knows not to turn down an invite from Madge Hawthorne.”
Gale laughed. “Unless you want her to drag your ass over. Six—bring wine and your cheese rolls.”
“Got it,” he agreed. “See you tomorrow.”
With a wave, Gale headed down the street and out of sight.
Steeling himself, Peeta looked to the house before heading towards the front door.
++++++
His childhood room looked the same, right down to the blue plaid wallpaper and the wrestling trophies on his bookshelves. His textbooks sat on his cherrywood desk as if he had just stepped out to take a quick break before going back to studying for his exams.
Seriously, it was like a goddamn shrine.
It’s been almost five years since that infamous Thanksgiving.
That day, Peeta left those textbooks as well as whatever connection he had to District 12.
There was a tentative knock and he sat up, his twin mattress creaking with his motion.
The door opened and his brother, Rye, peeked inside, giving him a careful smile. “Hi.”
He stepped in, closing the door behind him. However, his older brother kept his distance.
“I wanted to make sure you were settled in,” Rye started. “Mom said that you got in early this morning. She’s been cooking up a storm for dinner tonight—”
“Did you need something?”
His words came out bitingly and that blip of hope in Rye’s eyes faded.
“Delly and I will be here. Bran and Johanna are coming, too…”
“Awesome. Can’t wait,” he snapped.
“Peeta…I don’t know how many times I can say I’m sorry before you could even think of forgiving me. I never meant for it to happen. And I know that it took a lot for you to come here after everything—”
“I’m only here because Mom and Dad asked me to.” Peeta sneered at his brother. “Did you really think that I wanted to come to this wedding? Especially after finding out that you both went behind my back while I was in my first year of college? We were still together, Rye. Right before I came back for Thanksgiving, Delly was telling me how much she missed me…were you feeding her lines over the phone?"
“No!” Rye’s blue eyes were glassy. “She did miss you. We both did. My God, Peeta. You’re my brother and my best friend—”
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Rye sniffled. “Which one?”
Closing his eyes, Peeta tried to display a semblance of grit before answering.
“Both.”
++++++
Nursing the beer bottle in his hand, Peeta stepped out onto the porch of the Hawthorne house.
Inside, Gale was discussing the latest policies at District 12 High, where he was both teacher and wrestling coach, with Bran—Peeta’s eldest brother. Johanna, his very pregnant sister-in-law, was helping Madge with dinner—by sampling everything that had been set out on the dining table.
In a show of solidarity, Gale had not extended the invitation to Rye—though they were co-workers. He and Madge insisted on neutral ground, so no one spoke of the wedding or the couple-who-would-not-be-named.
Last night at their family dinner, Bran had greeted him with a firm hug before smacking him on the side of the head for taking so long to visit. His sister-in-law echoed his sentiment with a kiss and a smack to the opposite side.
Bran and Johanna had been together since high school, marrying right after graduation.
Literally after.
Since, as Johanna explained after their announcement, ‘they were already dressed fancy.’
Peeta had always wanted that—that certainty—and he thought he had that with Delly. He was so confident in them that he didn’t blink an eye when he left for school.
And look where that got him.
“I could practically smell the hostility—and Axe deodorant—wafting off you.”
He looked up, not even noticing the new occupant at the opposite end of the porch. The woman approached and under the moonlight, Peeta could make out her smoky almond-shaped eyes and wide smile. She wore a red bodycon dress and black stilettos, her dark waves bouncing against her shoulders as she walked. However, her gait was awkward in the heels, and she just barely made it to him before almost twisting her ankle.
Peeta chuckled as she muttered a curse. He took her hand, helping her to sit on the porch steps.
He smirked. “Is this your first time walking…ever?”
The woman whipped her head at him, eyes blazing.
“I swear to God, I’ll beat you to death with my high heels, if you don’t shut the fuck up.”
Peeta held his hands up. “Sorry!” Her mouth relaxed into a slight smile. “I’m Peeta.”
“I know who you are,” the woman retorted. “Everyone knows Peeta Mellark.”
Of course—he was the town charity case.
The boy whose brother stole his girlfriend right under his nose. The man who had to attend their wedding with a smile on his face when, in actuality, he was dying inside.
“You had the best ass on the wrestling team,” she finished before shaking her head. “I can’t believe you don’t remember me. I was only your biggest fan—at least, that’s what Gale called me.” He peered at the woman, searching for a clue on who she was. “Okay, let me give you a visual. Red glasses, wore an olive jacket, hair in two braids…”
A lone memory of a sweet fifteen-year-old flashed in his mind. She had an awkward walk even then…tripping over her Chuck Taylors whenever she was around him.
Peeta turned to her, a soft smile spreading on his lips. “Katniss Everdeen.”
“Live and in living color.” She smiled back. “My cousin told me that I wouldn’t want to miss dinner.”
Katniss—Gale’s younger cousin—spent most of her time at the Hawthorne house as her parents worked all the time. Whenever Peeta came by, she was always playing video games with Vick while Rory and Prim, Katniss’ younger sister, were watched by Mrs. Hawthorne.
Gale indulged her, letting the young girl hang with them while they talked about their matches or their girlfriends. She had practically been one of the guys.
Through his peripheral, he eyed the graceful curves of her figure.
Presently, Katniss was definitely not one of the guys.
“You know they’re all paired inside,” he informed her. “And I’m sorry—but I’m a shit person to be stuck with.”
Katniss scoffed. “Yeah, whoever thought that you wouldn’t come back bitter and surly was out of their damn mind.” She looked at him. “I’m sorry you got played.”
“Me, too.”
Katniss slid off her heels. “Were you really in love with Delly?” She stretched her toes. “I mean like over the moon, scream it from the mountain tops kind of in love? Was it worth losing all this time with your family? Your friends?”
No one had ever asked him that.
It had been such a whirlwind that day. Rye and Delly had sat him down after dinner and he had been packed up to leave within the hour. He could still hear his mother’s teary voice…Bran’s angry shouts at their brother…the anguish in Delly’s voice as she called out to him…
Yeah, it did hurt.
However, when Peeta really thought about it, it wasn’t heartbreak.
What hurt more was the look. The look in Delly’s eyes as she stared at Rye during their talk. That look of just utter adoration—he craved that look his whole life.
Now Peeta wasn’t sure if he had wanted it from Delly, or if he had just projected all his hopes for a great love in her.
“Maybe not,” he finally said. “But there’s no going back from what happened.”
“You’re here now,” she replied. “You can make it up to your family and friends. And I’m not saying that you should be all live and let live with Delly and Rye, but you can be civil and let everyone know that you’re not a shut-in.”
“Who said I was a shut-in?”
“Please. Your mom was calling every mother with a single daughter within a 15-mile radius to let them know that her youngest—and very single—son was coming home and would anyone be willing to entertain him.” Katniss stretched her legs, letting out a low groan that caused his stomach to tighten. “God love your mom. She is determined to keep you from wallowing. Unless…”
Peeta turned to see Katniss smiling maniacally. “Unless what?”
“Unless I’m your date for the wedding,” she stated bluntly. “I’ll even do all the other boring crap with you like the rehearsal dinner. Think of me as a buffer for all awkward moments. Trust me, I’ll make it uncomfortable for everyone but you.”
“Why?”
“For entertainment.” She sat back, staring up at the sky. “Also, I’ve always liked you, Peeta. You didn’t deserve the hand you were dealt and if I can help my childhood crush, it’s a bonus.”
Peeta smiled. “I was your childhood crush?”
Katniss smirked, her eyes shining with mirth. “Many a masturbatory session featured you in your wrestling uniform.”
“I can still do a lot of those wrestling moves; you know.” Her stare widened at his words and even in the darkness, Peeta could see the rosiness infuse her cheeks. “In case, you were wondering.”
“Well, fuck me,” she drawled before leaning towards him. “What do you think?”
Peeta examined his situation for a moment. Yes, this wedding was going to be awkward as hell for him and he was coming in single with nothing to show but a manuscript of his rambles.
And, Katniss was witty, charming, and full of life—the exact opposite of himself.
She was exactly what he needed.
Also, who could deny that Katniss Everdeen was gorgeous?
Judging by the semi in his lower half, he didn’t.
He nodded. “I think that I have myself a date.”
Katniss grinned. “Should we seal it with a kiss?”
Peeta couldn’t help but laugh. “Why not? Give it your best shot.”
She rose onto her knees, her hand traveling to his cheek as her mouth ghosted his.
“Oh, you’re in trouble.”
About five seconds later, he knew undoubtedly that he was fucked.
*I think I have another part for this in my brain.

“Dad, can we take the long way home today?”
Harland Mellark didn’t mind. Sometimes, Peeta and him preferred to take the ‘long way’ as his youngest called the road that would deviate them at least 10 minutes from getting home, but they enjoyed the extra time and the change of scenery from the usual path.
“Sure thing, buddy. Anything you want to talk about?”
Also, whenever Peeta asked to go the long way, it usually meant he wanted to share something: His score in art class, how he had thought about a new idea for the bakery, or an event regarding the girl with the braids.
“No…I just um- Aren’t you hot, dad? It’s very hot today, right?”
“Well, yeah, it is…”
District 12 had one of the hottest summers among Panem, and that year promised no difference. It was either scorching hot or ‘penguin cold,’ as Peeta called it.
“Because there’s a lemonade stand over there, look.”
Harland turned his head and smirked.
Of course…
In front of a small house stood a weird-looking lemonade post with a sign that read ‘$1 and very yummy!’ There was a girl with braids sitting down there, reading.
“Uh-huh…well, I could go and get us two of those, just so that you don’t have to walk in this sun.”
“I’m okay!” Peeta immediately exclaimed, and Harland had to laugh.
His boy had been lovestruck since the first day of school when he saw a small girl with a red dress, two braids, and a beautiful smile.
“So, you finally found out where Katniss Everdeen lives.”
“It’s not like that, Dad! I just happened to hear that she has been offering lemonade this week, and Madge asked her if it was easy selling on Seam Street because not many people pass through there…and then, because we sometimes come around this way…” His voice had increasingly lowered with every word, and Harland smiled to himself, ruffling Peeta’s hair.
He couldn’t blame his son for his crush. Katniss Everdeen was a very pretty and unusual girl, and Peeta had been cast from his own unique mold. Far as he knew, though, Peeta wasn’t exactly friends with the girl, which seemed weird because of the youngest Mellark’s popularity among his friends. At only 10 years old, Peeta was a very handsome boy, and Harland wasn’t only saying that because he was his own flesh and bones, but because it was true. Peeta had even been chosen on more than one occasion to be on the cover of the school pamphlets. Still, he didn’t like the attention all that much and would rather be in the back of the store, frosting cookies, or inside his room, mixing up new colors.
Bran was the jock of the family; he’d even earned a baseball scholarship.
Rye was the fun one, always joking and being loud. Being a salesman came naturally to him, so he was in charge of the counter on the weekends.
And Peeta was the artist. As soon as Harland and his wife had allowed him in the kitchen, he didn’t want to leave. Peeta’s hands were steady with the frosting bag, and Harland had already promised him they could try decorating a cake on Peeta’s next vacation.
Always being the one to bring sweets to class had also given Peeta extra points among his peers. However, apparently, the cat still caught Peeta’s tongue whenever Katniss was involved.
“Well then, son, we better go and get something fresh to drink, what do you say?”
“Yeah!”
______
“Oh, honey, it was awful!” Harland tried to contain his laughter so that it didn’t reach his youngest’s ears.
“Shh! What if he hears you? Don’t be so mean!” However, Harlands’s wife, Cassandra, was also having a hard time containing her grinning.
Harland had told the ‘lemonade incident’ to his wife, and he thought one really couldn’t just come up with these things.
He and Peeta had approached the stand and Katniss had smiled, greeting them and asking if they’d like a glass. Harland had paid for two while Peeta simply stood there, trying to come up with something clever to say, no doubt.
“Aren’t you hot, young lady? Shouldn’t you have an umbrella so you don’t get sunburned?”
“Oh, it’s okay, sir. I’m already dark-skinned, so a bit of sun is no big issue.”
“You-uh…I always have sunscreen with me, in case you want to borrow some,” Peeta told Katniss.
“Why do you always have sunscreen?”
“Well, I-my skin is fair. Not delicate! Just-I get, like, super red and swell up like a lobster if I stay out in the sun for too long.”
Of course, Katniss had laughed at his son’s reasoning for having sunscreen in his backpack at all times, but she had thanked him, anyway, and offered him a glass.
“It was the worst lemonade I have ever tasted in my entire life. The lemons were too green, the water too warm, and I bet you a cake she put the sugar in last.”
“Oh, poor thing. Why didn’t her parents help her?”
Harland’s smile fell away, and he sat on a chair. “I asked her where her parents were, and she just told me they were working. I asked Peeta while we drove back, and he knows her father was fired last week and her mom is taking double shifts at the hospital to make up for that. Graham is currently job hunting.”
“Oh! Was he working in the coal factory?”
“Yeah.”
Everyone had heard last week about the huge scandal in coal factory number 45. Half of their workers had been laid off, and the other half was still fighting for their severance pay, marching in front of the gates and declaring a strike.
“The Everdeens have two girls, right? No wonder their father is job hunting instead of rallying with his friends. Perhaps Peeta could take them some bread?”
Harland smiled because his wife’s family always tried helping out with food. No wonder his pant size had gone up more than once in the years since they’d been married.
“I’ll ask him. I’m sure he’ll want to do something nice for her.”
______
For the next two weeks, Harland made sure to take the ‘long road’ home and always stopped at the lemonade stand. He always bought two lemonades, although he never drank his, but Peeta would valiantly finish the whole thing in front of Katniss; he said he didn’t want to make her feel bad.
Then, one day, Peeta seemed more excited than usual and urged his dad to actually drink his glass that day. Surprisingly, it tasted quite good, and the water was cool to the lips.
Katniss was so happy; Harland didn’t even know the girl could smile so much. She went to hug Peeta, to his son’s immense surprise, and profusely thanked him, saying his lemonade was free today. Apparently, Peeta had finally gathered his courage and suggested to Katniss she change the way she was making her lemonade. It was a resounding success, and she’d even started getting a few more sales, if the jar of dollars was any indication.
Peeta started to take on his brother’s duties back home just so he could get his allowance. He wanted to pay for his own lemonade, and Harland couldn’t be prouder. It was good to start learning about the value of money as soon as possible.
However, something he learned about the Everdeen’s oldest girl was that she had pride in spades. Not in the bad sense of the word, no; she was more the kind to repay a drop of water with a fountain. Apparently, her father had taught her that, and even if they didn’t have much, she always insisted on Peeta’s and Harland’s lemonade being free on any day Peeta would take bread or pastries to her at school. There was no way to even slip her a dollar while she wasn’t watching; the girl had the eyes of a huntress.
Fortunately, after a couple of months of constant afternoon lemonades, Katniss told them she was closing the stand as her daddy had gotten a new job and she needed to concentrate more on her studies, which Harland took as an opportunity to offer Peeta as a study partner, for he was very good in his classes. Katniss then brought her father from inside and, finally, Harland was able to introduce himself.
What happened after that was pretty much textbook. Both families got to know each other; Peeta’s brother’s would tease him mercilessly whenever Katniss came to the bakery, and the eldest and youngest of the Everdeen and Mellark families became the best of friends for the years to come.
______
“But I don’t know if Mom is going to let us, you know?”
“We lose nothing by asking; I mean, the worst thing she can say is no.”
“What are you two plotting, hmm?” Harland surprised both youngsters in the kitchen.
“Nothing!” They answered at the same time.
“Really? Because it seemed as though you were scheming a secret plan. Come on, won’t you let me in on it? I’ve been bored.”
The young girl and the slightly taller boy looked as if they were considering it, and then they showed Harland their drawing. It was a lemonade stand with glasses and all, lots of people around, and some dollar signs as well.
“You want to sell lemonade?”
“I want to be able to buy things on my own without having to ask Mama or Daddy…” Alyssa looked at Harland with those big puppy eyes. The man never thought he would ever love another woman as much as he loved his wife, but his granddaughter had simply taken his breath away from the moment he saw her bundled up in her white blanket 8 years ago in the hospital.
“And what do you think, Emmer?”
“I could help her, Grandpa. If Mama says it’s okay, I’ll look after Ali.”
Harland wore a big grin on his face; he ruffled the hair of both his grandchildren and told them to go play, said that he’d look into their plan and help them later when they spoke with their parents.
Truth was, they would surely smile about it, remembering how all of this started for them many years ago‒with an awful glass of lemonade and a school crush that turned into a marriage.
“We’re home!” Harland heard his younger son exclaim as he opened the door. “Hey, Dad. Were the little ones too much?”
“No, son, we had fun.”
“Please, Harland, tell me you didn’t fill them up with sugar, or else I’ll leave them with you all day today,” Katniss told her father-in-law with a playful glare.
“Just a couple of cheese buns and then yogurt with cereal, nothing crazy.”
“Good. Thank you so much for taking care of them; we really wanted to make sure the cake arrived okay.”
“No problem at all, dear. I know how the business goes. Cassandra wants you to come later for dinner, though. That way you can both rest a bit from the kitchen.”
“That’d be lovely. Prim is arriving later; she’s staying for a week.”
“Oh, right! College vacation.”
They talked for a bit more before Alyssa and Emmer came down the stairs after playing God-knows-what.
“Mama, Mama, you know that I love you very, very much?”
“And I you. Now, what do you want?”
Alyssa asked her grandpa for help and started to explain how she wanted to sell some lemonade this summer, just so she could start saving her own money. Ever since that piggy bank project in school, she had been adamant about starting to save her pennies.
“Really, a lemonade stand?” Seated next to his son, Peeta was grinning like crazy.
“Yeah, Dad. I mean, we saw it in a movie, but it could be cool, right? People are always hot and going around in summer.”
“You should probably ask your dad about your mom’s lemonade stand.”
“What?!” both children exclaimed, and their parents laughed, surely recalling those weeks a long time ago.
“Well, son, sometimes life gives you lemons, and others, a beautiful girl gives you lemonade.”

POV. Peeta
A story about Rye Mellark.
I never expected a second child...
Willow had just stopped wearing diapers. She was a happy and laughing girl. She ran around the house with loud footsteps and jumped into my lap when I came home from work.
She was a miracle. Katniss got pregnant after almost a year of trying, after more than a decade of planning. The pregnancy was slow and difficult. Katniss looked completely destroyed every time I looked at her. I thought she would be the only one.
One day Katniss looked at me and said:
"I'm ready for one more."
And I asked "one more what?"
"Kid!" She answered me in the most obvious way possible. She spoke as if I had asked for one more. She always thought I wanted to have a big family. But I never said that. I think she was the one who wanted it, but didn't have the courage to admit it.
She started having dreams about a girl with blonde hair. She told me that this time she would be just like me, since Willow was so much like her. She was sure she was going to be a girl and we were going to name her Pearl.
In her first pregnancy, she craved wild berries, game meat, and forest roots; all the food she got in the forest, but she couldn't go and get it because of her huge belly and the harsh winter before Willow was born.
This time, even before she got pregnant, she wanted sweet and soft things. Like orange cakes, cinnamon rolls and gingerbread. She made me happy when she asked me for something that she was capable of doing. I cooked everything she wanted.
It didn't take long to finally become pregnant. Pregnancy was very different than the first time.
She was constantly smiling.
Her sexual desire was uncontrollable. She would drag me into the bakery storage room or onto the living room couch when Willow was taking a nap. She vocalized like she never did. She called me names or said things I never imagined would come out of her mouth.
She hunted almost every day and always made new dishes for us. She had much more strength than before. Once she dragged an entire deer from the forest to our house. I worried about how much effort she was putting in when she was nine months pregnant.
Rye was born at almost 42 weeks, her birth took a whole day and night. He was born on one of the hottest days in August. He was so fat and chubby that Willow's newborn clothes didn't even fit him.
Katniss thought he was a lot like me. Everyone talked about how Rye was my copy. Especially when he turned into a tall, burly, blonde teenager. But I always thought he looked like his mother. Even more so than Willow, who had Katniss's long, black hair.
Rye had Katniss's brave, silver eyes. They both had eagle eyes. Suspicious and attentive to everything. He had her sharp ears. And he had his talent for hunting. His hands were definitely like mine though. Thick fingers and large palms. Great for kneading bread.
At 14, he was already taller than his sister and mother. At 16, he looked 20. I didn't want him to help me at the bakery so soon, but I was old. Carrying those bags of flour all day with just one leg was too much for me at almost 50 years old. I was too weak for that. Rye started helping me when he was 15 and was much stronger than I was at his age. He had a talent in the kitchen. His breads were always perfect.
He was handsome but shy. He looked like my brother Bran, without the heartthrob charm. The girls seemed to like him. They always showed up at the bakery and bought a single cookie just to talk to him. Even though Rye looked older, he was still just a teenager. He would shrug his shoulders, get red in the face and flee to the kitchen as soon as he could.
He never had many friends. He spoke little. He would run away from school to go to the forest like Katniss used to do. She couldn't stay mad at him for that.
"He'll learn much more in the forest than at school." she said
I always warned him, but he said it was just this time. And he ended up coming home with a basket of berries and a fox again.
Rye was growing up and different from Willow, who went to study nursing far from District 12. He didn't want to leave our side. He kept carrying the heavy bags of flour for me and going into the forest to hunt with his mother.
He was always very kind, even too much.
He always let his sister have the biggest piece of pie for dessert.
He always helped me up the stairs, my legs becoming weaker as I got older.
One day I saw him talking at the back of the bakery. He whispered and a voice whispered back. They were giggling. She was a short girl with short brown hair. She started coming almost every day. Then they talked, giggled, and she left.
Until one day, they decided to get married. They were never engaged, and no one even knew that they were seeing each other. If Katniss liked to be secretive from the world, Rye was even more so. He didn't have a wedding and only invited me, Katniss, and Willow.
He just asked me to make a small cake with white icing and raspberry jam inside.
Rye's wife, Piper, was quieter than him. She had big brown eyes and got along very well with Katniss. The two used to sing. Piper knew how to please Katniss in a way I've never seen anyone else do.
The two moved to a cabin in the middle of the forest. 20 minutes walking from our house.
Then came the first granddaughter. A girl with black hair and honey eyes. Willow delivered her niece, there wouldn't be anyone better than her to do it. Since she had been a midwife for over five years at that time.
I remember the day Piper arrived at the door of our house with her belly too big for her. Rye hammered the door with his heavy hands, almost knocking it down. She moaned and cried until Katniss held her in her arms and carried her upstairs. Willow ran out with washcloths and basins of water. We never talk much about it, but Rye said she didn't have any family besides us.
Piper was so scared. She didn't seem to scream in pain, with each contraction she screamed in fear.
"Don't worry, Piper. All births are the same." I heard Willow say.
The girl asked me and Rye to wait outside. She didn't want us in there. Me and Rye sat outside and he put his head in his knees and didn't move until the baby cried. When she screamed from there, he moaned from here.
"Daddy, do you think she's going to die?" He asked me.
"She's much stronger than you imagine." I said.
And it was true.
They were parents at such a young age. Rye was 23 and she was 22. Such a hairy and chubby girl was born.
I later discovered that Katniss's black hair was the dominant gene in the family. They had four children. All with black hair.
Katniss lived more in the cabin they had in the forest than in our own house.
She taught our grandchildren songs and songs. She told about sewing and coal mines. She talked about her father. She talked about Prim. She talked about her late Great-Grandmother Ruth, who Rye's children never got to meet. She talked about her goat Lady Di.
"Where's your leg, grandpa?" the youngest boy asked me.
"I lost it in the Games."
"What games?" He responded.
They didn't know about them. That was something I could never get used to.
When my oldest granddaughter turned 12, we cut a cake and celebrated. That year marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.
