ASOIAF modern AU I am working an office job at the generic Lannister Company and it's shit, the company culture is shit but the pay is actually kind of decent and I tell myself I can stick it out. I get stuck in the queue for the office coffee machine behind Tyrion Lannister (we both have insomnia. skipping the morning espresso is not an option). The previous and only time I saw him he was very drunk at an office party and I'm not sure if he remembers and I don't want to ask. His phone keeps buzzing. Apparently his recently disabled older brother is in some kind of Twitter feud with a championship woman fencer for reasons which remain unclear. We bitch about the woefully inadequate workplace disability adjustments for 5-10 mins until the coffee machine is free. We both want height-adjustable desks for our various disabilities but Tywin Lannister is Not splashing out for that. A week later I open my phone to check the morning news and Tyrion Lannister is missing on the run for shooting his father with a fucking crossbow. And scene.

The Things I Do For Love: A Jaime Lannister Analysis 

So much discussion around Jaime revolves around the theme of redemption. What does it mean? Is it possible? How does one redeem themselves? However, another core aspect of what Jaimes character is all about is love, what he will do for it, and how it changes him.

When we first meet Jaime he is the mirror image of Cersei: beautiful, so confident that it is bordering on arrogance, and cruel. This is reflected in their incestuous relationship, one that has lasted since the twins were children. This relationship stems from the idea of Lannister supremacy encouraged and fostered by Tywin. It is through Tywin’s actions such as the extermination of the Reyne and Castamere families that the Lannister siblings learned that anyone who wasn’t a Lannister was inferior and beneath them. It is this sort of lion's pride that lives in each of them, even Tyrion. When it comes to Jaime and Cersei it manifests itself in their incestuous relationship. To them no one else was worthy of themselves, only another Lannister, and who else could they turn to but their identical twin? Through time the twins developed an “us versus them” mentality. That no one else mattered but them. It is this codependency that only grew as they grew up. It is this mentality that is key to understanding Jaime’s own identity.

Due to the belief that they were each other's mirror image, Jaime created an image of Cersei based off of himself. He thinks that Cersei may be a little mean and does some bad stuff but isn’t evil. It is this false image that helps Jaime repress (of which he often does with uncomfortable truths) the fact that Cersei is unnecessarily cruel and abusive towards his beloved little brother Tyrion. It makes it easier for him to love her too. It is this love for his siblings that defines Jaime. While a horrible thing to do, the whole reasoning behind pushing Bran out the window after catching the twins having sex is out of perverse protective love for Cersei. Jaime knows that she and himself will be killed if the truth comes out. While one can argue he also was considering the lives of their children it’s only till Feast that Jaime begins to care about Tommen. This protective nature also manifests itself later in AGOT when Jaime and his men kill Ned’s escort due to Tyrion being kidnapped and being placed under arrest. Yet another morally dubious action done out of love for his siblings. However, it is this love and ego that eventually shatters when Jaime loses his sword hand.

So much of Jaime’s identity revolved around his sword hand. It was the hand he used to kill Aerys and touch Cersei alongside many other things central to his person. By having it cut off Jaime learns that Lannisters can indeed be hurt just like any other person breaking down his image of an invulnerable golden Lannister. Through losing his hand, he is forced to ask himself the questions of who he really is and what that looks like. For a while, he holds onto the love for his siblings, especially his mirror image Cersei. However, it is this image that shatters. For Cersei, she sees that Jaime no longer resembles her and for this she goes cold. This being in direct contrast to Jaime’s idea that the love and codependency that they had created for themselves was unconditional. His relationship with Tyrion also implodes in ASOS with the Tysha reveal. The relationship with the twins further breaks down not simply due to Jaime now knowing of Cersei’s infidelity but also her growing darker nature. It is this that also shatters the mirror image. Cersei is unnecessarily cruel by burning down the Tower of the Hand with wildfire. By comparing her to Aerys, it is clear that Jaime’s image of her being just like him is gone. It is likely she has woken up his trauma that he desperately tries to repress. Jaime learns that her cruelty is not his own despite his prior morally dubious actions. While this relationship breaks down another grows. This being his relationship with Brienne.

In a direct contrast to Jaime and Cersei’s relationship, the dynamic that exists between Jaime and Brienne is based on reality not delusion. Brienne sees the worst in Jaime through his ego and knows of his most horrible acts. She bluntly calls him out on these and judges him for them. On the other hand Jaime insults her and plays on her insecurities. However, it is the loss of his hand that things change for the two. While still not friends directly after the injury, Jaime ensures Brienne is not assaulted after all the abuse both him and her have faced. Upon their arrival at Harrenhal, Jaime makes sure that her wounds are cared for as much as his.  For Brienne she learns the truth behind Jaime’s murder of Aerys. Through this and many other actions such as Jaime rescuing her from the bear and giving her Oathkeeper, she sees that there is some good in the man. On the flip side, Jaime develops one of the first relationships in his life with someone who is not a Lannister. He learns to both see and respect that Brienne is her own person, one that is complicated and does her own thing. It is this what Jaime is becoming. As such, Brienne is not a plot device for Jaime’s development but rather a catalyst. Through her Jaime learns to care about another individual and care deeply.

While we don’t know where Jaime’s story will go just yet. Perhaps he is the Valonqar or maybe he will be killed by Stoneheart. Regardless of where he goes it's clear that love and his falling out of it and arguably his falling into it has greatly defined his arc and who he is.

It is I, swimming modern braime anon! Here is what I have so far, snipping up your "worst couple on god's green earth" post and using it as an outline:

they met while she was on her daily 5 am jog outside of campus and found him hungover on a park bench after a two week bender with coke in his pocket and 30 missed calls and 55 suggestive texts from Cersei.

She’s a college sophomore on a sports scholarship just trying to get through her classes. She’s managing but she also has insomnia so running and training her body helps.

She thinks he’s a bum but gives him her water bottle out of pity. She heads back to her dorm, where she changes into the the team logowear athleisure she lives in. t-shirt, hoodie, basketball shorts, leggings, all in combination, and of course parka. Socks regardless but sneakers or slides depening on weather. Or timbs in the winter, Wisconsin gets fucking COLD. Showering before grabbing huge breakfast and heading to classes.

A week later is the ribbon cutting on the new recreation and fitness center. Tywin Lannister's name is on the brand spanking new natatorium.

Jaime’s there bc he works at Daddy Tywin Roy’s multi media empire as a nepotism. He doesn't know what his title is. Director of management of talent, or talent management director, or something. Whatever.

He’s at the party bc again, nepotism, and also he has a bunch of swimming records on the books from the 00s when he was on the team there. He could not tell you the last time he was in the pool (he was burning out while setting those records, and then he got in the car accident and had an excuse to lose himself in cersei and booze and drugs and a bunch of pr girlfriends who thought they were his beard bc he was so disinterested in them. a real jude law's character in gattaca situation.

Anyway, he was drinking champagne and trying to decide if the high he would get from sneaking away to do a bump of coke would be worth the judgement from his father and had just decided he couldn't be fucked to care.

She's there because she's currently swimming and breaking her own records, in a Katie Ledecky-type situation of competing against herself in the women's races and being among the faster men. But she's there as STAR SCHOLARSHIP TALENT and is also very aware that she's so busy swimming that she's passing classes bc she can only afford to take "rocks for jocks" type stuff. anyway, oh baby she does not belong here. And also why does her dad have to be here too?

they meet eyes and immediately feel some kind of godawful connection they are Locked In now. He beelines over to her bc he subconsciously thinks she’s Mother Teresa but then verbally starts making fun of her for having a social climber daddy. She asks how his monthly detox at rehab was. They’re snippy with each other all night.

Next few days on Jaime’s end, Tyrion notices he can’t stop talking about how huge and strong Brienne looked in her dress. So big and fit? Just. I mean it’s like weird how she was so powerful and had also saved him in the morning and oh  remember how big Dayne was? Tyrion remember he had the 50 and 100 free records before I did, and he was HUGE and Brienne is so mannish like that. Strong. TOTALLYYYYYYY gross though ewwwww imagine if she was into me? and I had to talk to her and her awful father and her records and her swimmer's shoulders and. Tyrion yearns for death.

A few days later for Brienne, she’s getting coffee with Sansa after class. Sansa looks over to see who Brienne’s texting and goes why are you arguing with a thirty two year old man about whether he got touched out anchoring the medley relay at olympic trials thirteen fucking years ago?

Brienne returns home to her dad, he's just glad she made it home alive. Of course now he has to get back to the business of arranging a marriage for her (and he remember how well that went the last few times) but Brienne says don't worry! More headcanons for the soul

-Brienne would wear her warmups/athlesiure literally everywhere. She maybe owns one pair of jeans. Not in like an asshole student athlete way who rides their scooter around campus and flexes their gear, that’s Jamie

-when all the boys bleach their hair (do college swimmers still do that or is it solely a high school thing) before shaving it off, Jamie absolutely refuses. Everyone gets mad at him for no team spirit but he doesn’t really gaf

-Jamie has thirty sponsorships and 50k followers on instagram and is verified and all of his posts are curated by a PR person. Brienne has 27 followers 3 posts and has been on private since she made her account

-Brienne is normal about being a student athlete. She does her work and goes to class then practice and doesn’t complain. Only thing that identifies her as part of the swim team is sometimes she wears the jacket. Jamie complains about his workload and sport balance every day bc it’s just so hard being a student athlete those plebeian NARPS just don’t understand (he’s a business major)

-Jamie is constantly ragging on Brienne but every time he sees her cut through the water like a dolphin he has to turn away for his own sanity

-Brienne tries to deny her crush on Jamie bc she feels stupid having a crush on him like everyone else but the first time he gives her his undivided attention in a nice way she has a panic attack

-Their first kiss happens after they get into an argument and Jamie is suddenly realizing how attractive Brienne is when she yells at him and he randomly asks if he can kiss her and she goes against her own judgement and says yes. It’s cute then she comes to her senses and pushes him into the pool hoping he lands on his head 💜
