It's January 4th, 🦯 World Braille Day. On this auspicious day in 1809, a child named Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, France. Young Louis was blinded at the age of three by an accident in his father's harness-making shop. Despite his disability, though, he excelled in his education.
While Louis was a student at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, he began developing the reading system for the blind that would eventually make him famous. Braille's creation involved a code he invented himself and used cells that contained up to six dots, making it possible for a fingertip to feel an entire cell with just one touch and move quickly to the next cell.
Braille spent the rest of his life teaching at the institute and perfecting his system, but unfortunately didn't live long enough to see it put into use. Braille suffered from a respiratory illness (probably tuberculosis) most of his adult life and finally succumbed to the disease in 1852 at the age of 43.
Two years later, thanks to the unrelenting insistence of his students, the Royal Institute for Blind Youth officially adopted Braille's system. Its use quickly spread throughout the French-speaking world, but was slow to catch on elsewhere. After his introduction to the system at the first European Conference of Teachers of the Blind in 1873, Britain's Dr. Thomas Rhodes Armitage championed Braille's invention, and its use quickly spread over most of the rest of the planet. The United States was slowest to see the light. They didn't adopt the system until 1916.
In November 2018, the United Nations proclaimed that from now on, World Braille Day would be celebrated as an international celebration day every January 4th to show appreciation for Louis Braille and to promote "awareness of the importance of his creation as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and visually impaired people." ☮️ R.I.P., Louis… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

@iamfuckingtrash replied to your post “Which one of these things do you think I'm lying...”:
Did you just, have books in braille? Without knowing braille?
librarians are very wonderful people who don't ask questions, and who will let you check out whatever books you want so long as you bring them back later
#iamfuckingtrash#technically the librarian did ask me one question#''do you know those books are in braille?''#me: yup!#librarian: okay! have a nice day!#personal#sbs polls

Autism moment I wanted to go upstairs and be in bed by 11 but I’ve only just realised it’s 1 in the morning after after getting so absorbed in my work but hey I finished part of it
#posterzine is essentially done!#now I just need to create a font and fill out a 40 page progress book#don’t you just hate graphic design?#genuinely tho I got into and am still kinda in a bad place mentally#and I didn’t work on this project for ages#but I’ve managed to get so much done in like 5 days. the deadline is this Friday and I’m actually optimistic lmao#I have. issues with it. and some things I’m not able to do with my posterzine and I wouldn’t have been able to do anyway#for example I would want one poster to have nothing on it except the design is raised like braille is#and you can only experience it through touch#and then have a qr code that leads to a website with all text and image ids for screen readers#but I got to make sure the colours would be accessible to colourblind people. and the font is accessible to dyslexic people#in theory this would be completely accessible to all

World Braille Day
World Braille Day celebrates the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the reading and writing system used by millions of blind and partially sighted people all over the globe.
Though not a public holiday in any country, World Braille Day provides an opportunity for teachers, charities and non-government organizations to raise awareness about issues facing the blind and the importance of continuing to produce works in Braille, providing the blind with access to the same reading and learning opportunities as the sighted.
History of World Braille Day
Louis Braille, the inventor of braille, was born in France on January 4th, 1809. Blinded in both eyes in an accident as a child, Braille nevertheless managed to master his disability while still a child. Despite not being able to see at all, he excelled in his education and received scholarship to France’s Royal Institute for Blind Youth.
During his studies, inspired by the military cryptography of Charles Barbier of the French Army, he developed a system of tactile code that could allow the blind to read and write quickly and efficiently. Braille presented the results of his hard work to his peers for the first time in 1824 when he was just fifteen years f age. In 1829, he published his first book about the system he had created, called “Method of Writing Words, Music, and Plain Songs by Means of Dots, for Use by the Blind and Arranged for Them”.
The braille system works by representing the alphabet letters (and numbers) in a series of 6 dots paired up in 3 rows. The simplicity of his idea allowed books to start being produced on a large scale in a format that thousands of blind people can read by running their fingertips over the dots. Thanks to this, blind students have the opportunity to be educated alongside their peers as well as read for pleasure just as easily as any seeing person can.
How to celebrate World Braille Day
As incredible as braille is, and as much as it offers blind and partially sighted people, braille books must stay within the country where they are produced because ofrestrictive international copyright laws. Because braille books cannot be shared across borders, the blind cannot read any books that are not produced within their own country. Unfortunately, at present only 5% of all published materials get produced in accessible formats, which means that under 10% of all blind children in developing countries go to school due to the shortage or lack of teaching materials.
The Marrakesh Treaty is the name of an international agreement finalized in June 2013 that would allow copyright exceptions for published works to be made widely available in accessible formats. The implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty will allow blindness organizations to share their resources with other organizations in developing countries that may not have the resources to produce books for their blind citizens.
Then, schools for the blind in wealthier countries would be able to send books to schools in poorer countries so blind children who cannot afford to buy braille books will still have access to the textbooks needed for them to finish school. For example, Spain’s ONCE (Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles, or The Spanish Foundation for the Blind) could make their braille library available to blindness organizations in all of the Spanish-speaking countries in South America, thus saving the costs of reproducing the exact same books for each separate country.
However, these resources can be shared only if this treaty becomes law in all of the countries around the world.
This coming World Braille Day, celebrate Louis Braille’s achievements and help millions of blind and partially sighted people everywhere by writing a letter to your government representatives encouraging them to make this treaty a reality.

Just thinking. Trying to maybe write later...
#Okay so in a decent amount of fic the writers make it that Makoto can read braille#and at the end of the day its a completely understandable little detail#but it always makes me 🤔#because being blind doesn't mean you'd automatically learn to read braille...#my aunty has this thing called stargardts disease which is genetic and she was diagnosed over 20 years agao#and has been legally blind for god probably 18 years#and she's still never learnt to read braille#she got taught to walk with a cane bc australia does have p good healthcare for the visually impaired#she even did a touch typing course back before she got put on the disability pension and was still working#i think they might have even given her a book of braille bc i vaguely remember touching it#but she never learnt#so im just not really sure makoto wpuld have learnt to sufficiently read in braille in the short period she had#theres no reason for Lee to know how to read it either so I imagine in 1988 it would be difficult#i mean Lee could have known someone who came and taught her a bit but idk#i think logically she probably just couldnt read in braille#had the tojo clan not upended her life with Lee and depending if she regained vision anytime soon#she might have learned but i think a lot of people who had vision and then lost it as an adult dontnecessarily#act the same as someone who was born with it or lost it very very young#case in point: my aunty#so yeah one of those things thats genuinely not really an issue#im just a mental case that THINKS and reads into things#and goes Hmm 🤔#lmao#apparently she says she reads in braille in the game which i dont remember but ?#tbh that just reads as the writers not actually properly thinking about how short a time she would have had to learn it tbh#like she might have been learning bit by bit but i highly doubt she was fluid with it#idk these games are bad with disability lmao#Aoki is a prime example just bc he got a lung transplant doesnt mean he would suddenly be fuckin able bodied like ????

Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809. A French educator and the inventor of a reading and writing system, named braille after him, intended for use by visually impaired people. His system is used worldwide and remains virtually unchanged to this day. Braille was blinded at the age of three in one eye as a result of an accident with a stitching awl in his father’s harness making shop. Consequently, an infection set in and spread to both eyes, resulting in total blindness. At France’s Royal Institute for Blind Youth, he began developing a system of tactile code that could allow blind people to read and write quickly and efficiently, inspired by a system invented by Charles Barbier.

To get better sleep and give myself back at least a little time to just be alone with my thoughts, I bought a little clock radio for my room that has a tuner and saves favorite radio stations. I am obsessed with it now. XD Forgot that I really like radio. Planning to get another one for the living room so I can sit in my chair and just push a button to change stations. It’s been my dream since every time I’ve been in a car with a radio tuner. XD
#razz rambles#however weird and dorky you think I am#I am almost certainly so much moreso than that XD#the radio is so my phone has no reason to be in my room now#It’s very nice#been getting up at the same time#Reading braille books in bed#Actually falling asleep pretty fast#being annoyed into getting up by shitty commercials blaring first thing in the day XD

It's January 3nd. 🌜 On this day in 2019, at 02:26 UTC, China's Cheng'e 4 (嫦娥四号, Moon Goddess 4) spacecraft achieved the world’s first soft landing on the far side of the Moon. The Yutu 2 (玉兔二号, Jade Rabbit 2) rover was deployed about 12 hours later. Cheng'e 4 is the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program's fourth of six planned missions to the moon. The first two missions achieved Lunar orbit. The third and fifth missions collected Lunar samples on the near side and returned them to Earth. The sixth will attempt to do the same in 2025.
Gheng’e 4’s ongoing mission is to determine the age and composition of this unexplored region of the Moon. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) targeted the landing for the Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken basin, a low-lying area 2,500 kilometers across and 13 kilometers deep which covers nearly a quarter of the Moon's surface. Scientists believe this basin – the largest hole in the solar system – is the result of a massive impact. CNSA hopes that Cheng'e 4 can find and study some exposed deep lunar crust and mantle rocks. This would provide an unprecedented view into the Moon's internal structure and origins.
In May 2019, CNSA reported that Cheng'e 4 had found what appear to be mantle rocks. CNSA continues to report Cheng'e 4's findings to the world concerning Lunar surface temperatures, Lunar rock and soil chemical compositions, Solar corona radiation characteristics, and cosmic ray observations.
"The re-tuned data should provide us valuable information to disclose the secrets of our Moon, from the never-touched side! My fingers are crossed!" – Le Qiao, Lunar Geologist, Shandong University, Weihai, China. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
