Part 7
June 20, 20XX
Mercury looks excited. He keeps his voice down as he speaks.
"Zuli's alive! I- Oh my god, he's alive, and he's not infected, and-"
Mercury breaks into a relieved laugh, tears falling down his face.
"Okay. Okay, I'm fine. I'll be fine. So. Zuli's trying to find some clothes right now; our only options right now are whatever I have, so it's not going to be great, but it's infinitely better than what he had. Which was almost nothing. He's a little sick, and he doesn't have much strength, but whatever shit he's got is twenty times more preferable to the nightmare outside. At least his thing, I can treat. And it won't turn him into some feral zombie thing."
Mercury shudders violently.
"Ugh. Anyways. 0 progress has been made on the cure, but, hey, keeping someone from dying in a nasty dank cell in the basement is still saving a life. …God, is it obvious that I’m starting to lose my mind?”
In the background, a humanoid blur appears. It comes closer. A short, sickly-looking pale human with black hair, looking rather nauseous.
“Um…Mercury? Who are you talking to?”
Mercury turns around quickly.
“Oh. Hi, Zuli. Come on over.”
Zuli nervously comes forward to stand next to Mercury. He’s wearing a long-sleeved shirt that is too big for him. Mercury moves over slightly.
“I’ve been making a record of everything that’s happened. I think there’s half a dozen so far? I haven’t been recording one every single day. Mostly because I forget.”
Zuli eyes the camera nervously. His eyes are sunken. He looks like he hasn’t eaten well in a while.
“Are you going to send these to someone, or are you just hoping someone will find them eventually?”
“I’m going to try to find somewhere to send them. If I can, I want to try to send them to the resistance. They probably have the most far-reaching influence and can warn people quickly.”
Zuli furrows his brow. “I’m pretty sure they don’t deal with contagious diseases.”
Mercury shrugs helplessly. “They deal with us, though. As far as I know, there’s not a multiverse-wide version of the World Health Organization, but maybe I’ll find them when I’m looking for the resistance. If not, the resistance can send it to them.”
Zuli rubs his arms. “...How long has this been going on, again?”
Mercury blinks. He’s silent for a long moment before he frowns and says, “About two weeks, I think…? I started these on the seventh, and Koroit was showing symptoms before shit really hit the fan…”
“All of this in two weeks?” Zuli sounds horrified. “Oh my god…”
He stares off in silence. After a moment, Mercury reaches for the camera.
“Why don’t you let me look at that cough you have?”
The video ends.

vox really doesn't get hurt often.
--- aside from his and val's spats which often get physical, he's generally very healthy. he does regular tune-ups and things, keeps himself updated; but . . .
he'd ran into trouble. and by trouble, he was reminded why he doesn't typically go outside. he's quite literally the face of television; he's well known and known for being wealthy. and he is an overlord, sure; but when you're up against a gang of at least eight sinners unarmed, it doesn't always go in your favor.
he'd won, in the end, but not without a few good hits. blue blood was leaking from as he finally zipped into angel's room. he didn't want to go back, because he knew val would be angry at him for getting so banged up.
he could fix himself, with perhaps a bit of assistance. and angel was far more gentle than val. he appeared in the bathroom, not wanting to get blue blood on the carpet.
" angel? " he calls. his voice sounds a lot glitchier than typical, like a skipping record.

You people do not understand how feral I am about Phoenix with a genetic immunodeficiency problem/disease. Like, always wearing masks, always shivering during the cold months, always seeming just a bit dizzy, a bit numb in the feet (which could tie into his clumsiness) And, as a bonus angst point, always being embarrassed about not being able to function ‘normally’ and sometimes needing assistance. Your honor, he is simply my little man.

What is a CORE/FORMATIVE/DEFINING moment/memory between your V/OC and ❔(fingers! of course)
For the record, I hate this <3
A formative memory between Vee and Fingers:
Vee woke up in an unfamiliar bed. Instinct kicked in before higher brain function, and she stilled, trying her best to place the oddly-familiar assortment of gaudy decor-
"Finally awake, darling?" The voice beside her cracked the dam and memories of blood and gunfire, the acrid smell of smoke and electrical current running along the edge of a mantis blade flooded her mind. She'd been wounded, desperate to close a wound before it festered and oh god no...
Reeling, Vee leaped out, whirling to face the speaker so fast her cybernetics lagged. "Fingers?!" She exclaimed, hoping against all hope that there was some kind of mistake, but no, God loved kickin' her when she was down, so why stop now?
The ripperdoc's emaciated figure leaned against the plush heart-shaped headboard far too smugly for her liking, lip-lined mouth quirking at her shock.
"Ah, I wouldn't move too much," He drawled, tilting his head as he dragged his gaze across her chest in a slimy caress. Belatedly, Vee realized she was naked. Fingers dropped his voice, leaning forward in a motion he probably considered seductive, "You'll undo all my good work, and believe me I gave you my best."
He was definitely clothed under the blanket. God himself could fuckin' tell her otherwise and she wouldn't believe it.
Ok, her pants were on the beanbag in the corner. Her top was by her feet...where was her jacket-fuck it, screw the jacket. Clothing on -possibly inside out- Vee started backing out, "I- uh, yeah- th-thanks for the assist...send me the bill-"
"Oh, no need," Finger's mouth split in a shit eating-grin that had all the destructive power of a fuckin' black hole. "You took care of that...with interest. Consider my door always open for you, sweetheart."
She stumbled out the doorway, trying not to dry heave, angling her hair to hide the shame as she avoided eye contact with several patients, "I see you were nowhere to be found, huh?" Vee hissed out loud, stalking out the back.
"Nope." Johnny's disembodied voice agreed, "I'm all for takin' one for the team but what happened back there...that's too much, even for me."
Vee hated that she couldn't even blame him for it, "Whatever it was, I don't want to know."
"For once, we're on the same damn page."

I checked every folder and I cannot find it anywhere 😭 I genuinely thought he forgot to send it lmao
oh no! here's the text of it:
Hello!
In this week's video, it's a bus that transforms into a train! That's right: there's a road-rail vehicle, out in the world, that the public can ride. The catch is that it's in a fairly remote part of Japan.
Over on Lateral, it's the return of Karen from Karen Puzzles, Ashens, and Dr Becky, with questions about medical methods, musical murders, and McDonald's marketing.
What else have I found on YouTube this week?
The "Little Shop of Horrors" Tiny Desk Concert is magical: the current Broadway cast, along with composer Alan Menken providing the introductions and stepping in to solo "Somewhere That's Green". If you know the musical, this is absolutely worth your time.
There's finally a behind-the-scenes for Andrew Huang's "Spacetime"! Even if you didn't see the original, it's worth watching this, to see what a dedicated indie production team can pull off on a budget these days. (And the title is a great bit of modern clickbait!)
Evan Hadfield's Rare Earth continues to make heartfelt, deep videos: the coolest kid in the prison camp (occasional strong language) is a meditation on the meaning and purpose of charity, as well as documentation of something that's out of sight of most of the world.
Kasey Chambers covers Eminem's Lose Yourself (very strong language). I'd have thought that Lose Yourself was un-cover-able: too iconic, too well-known, and too tied to the movie it came from and the artist that performed it. The first two minutes of this video might fool you into thinking it's some earnest-but-cringeworthy, well-intentioned folk singer trying to be hip. But stick with it: it's worth it.
And from around the rest of the internet:
How did we know space was a vacuum, centuries before anyone got there?
I'd never heard of the Farmer's Diagram before this week. It's a way to represent catastrophe aversion: in short, how much danger is society willing to tolerate?
Spun soy protein was the "food of the future", and this article about its development, growth, and popularity collapse is well worth reading. It's a portrait of one part of the space-age optimism of the 1960s, the Jetsons future, surely, just around the corner.
Discord, or the Death of Lore (occasional strong language) is a polemic by online archivist Jason Scott that echoes and clarifies thoughts I've had for a long time: document your stuff properly.
And finally: Chuck E. Cheese still uses floppy disks in 2023, but not for long.
All the best,
— Tom
If you want any of the links lmk and I'll give them to you!
