BL3 and me
Just a quick update, in case you were following: I did buy BL3 in the end, though as of this writing I have not bought any DLC, and I’ve played through three times so far (Amara, Moze (Torgue-only challenge), and Fl4k).
I still feel uneasy about it, but I’m not sure what difference it would have made not to at this point.

Oof. Might have to reconsider buying Borderlands 3 if more info about this doesn’t show up soon enough.
Exact details about what’s true and what isn’t are still in the dark but seeing how 2K and Gearbox could’ve easily handled this with a single Cease and Desist letter (Assuming that at least something about what they stated was true) things are not looking good on their part.

I know this is going to come across as “typical tumblr anti-capitalist” but believe me I know capitalism is the only viable option.
But it’s really frustrating that there isn’t really a viable solution to dealing with corporations who, not only just do illegal shit, but shit that’s legal but still morally corrupt.
Thinking specifically of the topic that brought this to mind, the whole Take Two Borderlands 3 fiasco going on where #BoycottBorderlands3 is trending on Twitter, but yet A) it’s not going to be effective at all because most people don’t care and really why should they, it’s an incident that only impacts a single YouTuber.
And B) it’s very unlikely that Gearbox themselves are to blame for sending P.I.s to a YouTuber’s house to intimidate him, or file false copyright claims, or shut down his Discord server, or libeling him in ‘news’ articles, so I don’t feel like they should be made to suffer for the crimes of their publisher.
Other than voting with your wallets, what option is there? We talk about the issues, but talk lasts a week at best and then the next scandal wipes it away.

Borderlands 3 YouTube Channel Investigated by 2K For Leaks Disappears
New Post has been published on https://gamerszone.tn/borderlands-3-youtube-channel-investigated-by-2k-for-leaks-disappears/
Borderlands 3 YouTube Channel Investigated by 2K For Leaks Disappears
Matt “SupMatto” Somers no longer has a live YouTube channel following reports 2K Games investigated his channel over Borderlands 3
leaks.Following our report where 2K confirmed an investigation into Somers’ Borderlands 3 content over possible leaks, SupMatto’s whole YouTube channel and backlog of content has been taken offline.
Somers revealed that his YouTube channel suffered several copyright strikes from 2K Games. YouTube has a three-strike policy where if a channel is flagged three times within a 90-day time period, YouTube will shut down the channel. Considering the number of strikes Somers’ YouTube channel received, this could be a likely explanation for the disappearance.
Original story follows:
This morning the hashtag #BoycottBorderlands3 began trending on Twitter. The hashtag was created in response to a video published by Borderlands YouTuber SupMatto who claimed he was the target of an investigation by Take-Two Interactive over Borderlands 3 leaks.
IGN has learned that 2K Games and Take-Two, the parent company of 2K as well as Rockstar and Private Division, have indeed been investigating SupMatto’s Borderlands 3 videos as part of a wider investigation into ongoing Borderlands 3 leaks. (2K serves as publisher on Borderlands 3, which is being developed by Texas-based video game studio Gearbox Software.)
Yesterday, YouTuber SupMatto published a video that claimed that two private investigators showed up at his residence to inquire about his Borderlands YouTube account. “I don’t feel like I have anything to hide. They questioned me about various things relating to my channel, the livestream that was discussed on my channel… and they told me they were from Take-Two Interactive.”
However, our investigation revealed a complicated 10-month investigation initiated by 2K and Take-Two into prominent Borderlands 3 leaks.
In a statement to IGN, 2K confirmed the investigation into SupMatto.
“Take Two and 2K take the security and confidentiality of trade secrets very seriously. The action we’ve taken is the result of a 10-month investigation and a history of this creator profiting from breaking our policies, leaking confidential information about our product, and infringing our copyright,” a 2K Games representative said.
SupMatto’s video focused on an incident related to the official Borderlands 3 Twitch extension, which SupMatto reported on based on a Twitch exploit.
“It’s not some crafty work-around,” SupMatto claims on his video. “On April 29th the official Borderlands YouTube channel posted the reveal of the Twitch extension leading into the gameplay reveal… and the name of the testing accounts were exposed in that video. This wasn’t found by me.”
61 Borderlands 3 Details
However, 2K allege SupMatto’s leaks into Borderlands 3 goes far beyond just the Twitch extension. SupMatto’s YouTube channel has published videos dating back to 2018 with information on Borderlands 3, including accurate details on characters and mechanics months ahead of Borderland 3’s official reveal. There’s also a question of where SupMatto got his leaks. If they were from third-party vendors, or internal parties connected to Borderlands 3, then there’s the matter of breached NDAs to consider.
In our discussions with 2K, we’ve learned that the Twitch streams SupMatto used as sources were set to private, not public, as SupMatto claims. We were told that it was an exploit in Twitch’s security that allowed SupMatto’s community to datamine their way into getting access to thumbnail previews on what were private test streams. This puts SupMatto’s claims in his Borderlands 3 videos into question.
“The information he’s sharing about the situation is incomplete, and in some cases untrue,” a 2K representative said in a statement to IGN. “Not only were many of his actions illegal, but they were negatively impacting the experience of other content creators and our fans in anticipation for the game.”
Since SupMatto’s encounter with 2K’s private investigators, we’ve learned that he has deleted several (not all) of the Borderlands 3 videos containing leaked information from his YouTube channel, seemingly without rhyme or reason. These include several leaked reports published months before Borderlands 3’s PAX East reveal.
According to sources familiar with the matter, previously listed perks on SupMatto’s YouTube channel allegedly offered access to a private Discord channel that included further Borderlands 3 leaked information in exchange for a $5 membership to his YouTube channel.
In SupMatto’s video he revealed that his Discord channel was shut down and received the following notice from Discord: “Your account was involved in selling, promoting, or distributing cheats, hacks, or cracked accounts.”
Screencapture from SupMatto’s recent video.
We’ve learned that both Twitch and Discord were investigating SupMatto’s Twitch channel and Discord server, respectively. We’ve reached out to both Twitch and Discord for confirmation.
As we understand it, at this time, 2K and Take Two are not pursuing legal action against SupMatto. But the incident is part of a larger and ongoing investigation by 2K and Take Two over Borderlands 3’s trade secrets.
“We will take the necessary actions to defend against leaks and infringement of our intellectual property that not only potentially impact our business and partners, but more importantly may negatively impact the experiences of our fans and customers,” 2K said in a statement.
We have attempted to reach out to SupMatto for this story, but were unable to find an available contact method on his YouTube channel, and both his Twitter and Discord servers are down.

So this article expresses some of the reasons for my decisions to stop directly boycotting Overwatch and Borderlands -- two different games from two different companies, and different controversies, to be sure, but both unpleasant. (Yes, the article is about Blizzard, but the reasoning applies to my boycott of 2k/Gearbox as well.)
As the author points out, if I boycott the bad people, I’m also boycotting the good people.
But this has also left a kind of sour taste. I don’t enjoy playing the games quite as much as I used to. And so I’m also not spending the money I used to.
Overwatch: I stopped playing entirely for 13 months. It meant not enjoying the company of my Overwatch friends; it meant missing out on the event skins and emotes and so on. On the last day of each event I used to buy 50 loot boxes at a time and open them, hoping to find the skins I was missing, or accumulate enough in-game cash from the duplicates and cash drops to afford to buy them outright. (Once the event is over, I’ll lose the opportunity to acquire the skins and other items for a year, until the event repeats.) At $40 a pop (per 50 boxes, that is) and with two different accounts, that could add up quickly. I’d make jokes about “more money than brains” but the fact is that I could afford the cost. Besides the event skins, I also missed out on the release of their last new hero player character, Echo.
Eventually I started playing again on the theory that playing on their servers costs them money; if I don’t buy any loot boxes (or merchandise) then they’re losing money on me, but I’m still enjoying the game. Since then I’ve been playing more-or-less regularly, and watching the leagues, but I haven’t directly spent a single penny.
BL3: When they first announced it, I was ready to buy it in advance. I was almost literally waving my credit card and shouting “Take my money!” I fell in love with BL2 and have been waiting for years for something other than BL:PS, which was a real mixed bag. Then they said, no, we’re going to release it on Epic exclusively for six months; Steam players will have to wait or join Epic’s platform. I hesitated for a while before deciding how I felt about it. In the end I decided it wasn’t a deal-breaker, and got ready to sign up with Epic.
Then I started hearing the controversies. Some of the issues I had were with Randy Pitchford’s behavior; some were with how some of the voice actors had been treated. Though I think that was really Pitchford too. In the end, I decided to boycott the game for the time being, then reevaluate when it went on sale on Steam.
Six months later it was introduced on Steam and immediately went on sale. After some soul-searching I decided that I wanted to play games with my old friends again, that any point I’d tried to make either had been made or was long forgotten (or more likely, never noticed), and at least I wouldn’t be paying full price.
And there was also the other thing to consider, the one I started this posting with: if I burn down a city of people to punish one guy I don’t like, can I really claim a position of moral superiority? Not all the people who work for 2k or Gearbox or Activision are assholes. Do I punish them all indiscriminately?
Right. So. I did buy a copy of BL3 in the end, at discount. I’ve not bought any of the DLC. I’ve been playing OW but haven’t given them any money.
I’m not boycotting them any more, but I’m not not boycotting them, either.

A few months ago I posted this and started a personal boycott of BL3. (The original link doesn’t work any more, so I provided some new ones in an edit at the top of my post.)
My resolve has weakened somewhat. Several friends have been playing the game since it released. It’s now on Steam. I’ve considered the possibility of waiting until it was on Steam and went on sale.
Well… it’s on Steam and it’s on sale. They put it on sale immediately at a 50% discount ($30), which certainly falls into my price point. This article argues against the boycott, or at least questions it:
https://www.androidcentral.com/problems-gearbox-back-way-further-boycotting-borderlands-3
Fact, is, I don’t think I’m hurting anybody by not buying it… which is the same reason I’m still playing the other games that I own and haven’t shut down my Blizzard account. Nobody cares.
One of my gaming friends has given me some updates about the game, so I know a little more about the player characters. Still don’t know if there’s any that I really care for, but if I play, I’ll probably start with the Siren.
Remember, I never did say that I’ll never play the game. I’m thinking about it.
