"BOY SCOUTS ENJOY VISIT TO FLEET.
Copyright by Underwood & Underwood, K.Y.
The 51st Battalion of the United States Boy Scouts visited the Atlantic fleet, May 15th and captured the hearts of the old mariners aboard the U.S.S. New York. They delighted all who saw by their fine drilling on ducks, and later made jolly on top of the big guns of the ship."

Jamie Stengle at AP:
IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Boy Scouts of America is changing its name for the first time in its 114-year history and will become Scouting America. It’s a significant shift as the organization emerges from bankruptcy following a flood of sexual abuse claims and seeks to focus on inclusion. The organization steeped in tradition has made seismic changes after decades of turmoil, from finally allowing gay youth to welcoming girls throughout its ranks. With an eye on increasing flagging membership numbers, the Irving, Texas-based organization announced the name change Tuesday at its annual meeting in Florida.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” Roger Krone, who took over last fall as president and chief executive officer, said in an interview before the announcement. The organization began allowing gay youth in 2013 and ended a blanket ban on gay adult leaders in 2015. In 2017, it made the historic announcement that girls would be accepted as Cub Scouts as of 2018 and into the flagship Boy Scout program — renamed Scouts BSA — in 2019. There were nearly 1,000 young women in the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in 2021, including Selby Chipman. The all-girls troop she was a founding member of in her hometown of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, has grown from five girls to nearly 50, and she thinks the name change will encourage even more girls to realize they can join.
For the first time in the 114-year history of the Boy Scouts of America's history, the name will become Scouting America. This comes on the heels of a decade-plus worth of changes to inclusion in the BSA.

if you haven't heard
republicans are losing their shit because "boy scouts of america" are changing their name to "scouting america" and that's bad somehow, because now boys lost their exclusive space and won't be taught how to be a man
I have no idea why people who never had anything to do with scouting always feel so entitled to comment on our movement i swear
I'm a polish scout but will comment on this anyway - gender separation in scouts has been an american thing, pretty much exclusively.
most countries have just one main scouting organisation, typically recognised by wosm (world organization of scout movement) and some smaller ones, local or religious ones. differences among scouting organisations are mostly to do with history, approach and religion. like, france has different organisations for atheists, denominations of christians, muslims and so on. poland has 2 major ones, one contemporary and the other based on scouting before the second world war. it's america that's weird, having one for boys and one for girls, and royal rangers, but they're somewhat small.
guiding has developed alongside scouting since the beginning, and cub scouts and rangers (kids younger than scouts and older scouts respectively) are pretty much always coeducational. it's only troops for 10-13 year olds that are commonly separated by gender, but not always.
boys scouts of america accept girls into their ranks for years now, as they can't afford to be picky. see, what we scouts from outside of us consider bsa to be is a cautionary tale. to not get involved with fundamentalists and stay vigilant, to not tolerate pedophilic behaviour from leaders and report that shit swiftly and decisively. the rebrand to "scouting america" seems to be a desperate attempt to separate boys scouts of america of this unfortunate legacy.
finally, because people refuse to accept that; scouting isn't conservative or even necessarily patriotic in the strict sense. it's a youth movement meant to help young people grow up. the scout method (based on work in small groups, leadership roles, accountability, positivity, responsibility and such) hasn't changed in years but our values have (though it depends on your organisation, leaders and troop obviously). inclusivity is more important now than some outdated ideal of masculinity, and the name change is supposed to reflect that.
jesus just let scouts run themselves in peace or at least stop with the fucking pearl clutching about "poor boy scouts" because of "woke"

I visited a beloved aunt not too long ago. We talked about cooking and family and yard work and went for walks. Learned how to make a flour/butter/mushroom sauce that I've since put to good work. I dragged her to her local library where she finally got a library card. She showed me grandpa's Boy Scout handbook (1938?) that she's been keeping! Printed in a beautiful, deep green ink that I really, really liked-- all the information in it was so useful and interesting! Have included a couple more shots of the book under the cut for those interested (bow making!)

In the South Park episode "Cripple Fight", (June 27th, 2001), the Colorado Supreme Court rules that the Boy Scouts of America must allow Big Gay Al into the Scouts. Big Gay Al states Freedom is a Two Way Street, and drops his case. The BSA now allows homosexuals in the scouts.

I just sorted through and refolded my old BSA stuff so I could put it away properly, right? Well, it turns out I kept my CIT binder from the camp I worked at and uniforms. I know I don't have the pants anymore, but I have my Class A and Class B shirts and my Venture Crew one, too. And my neckers and my slides.
How tf did I forget these??? Like my book is still on my shelf, but how did I forget my uniforms? Wore those every Monday for the meetings and ceremonies.
My name tags are with my other work name tags on my desk (magnetic), but like... how did I forget that stuff? That's a good five years of experiences and stuff and??
I thought I'd lost this stuff in the moves

"It dwarfs the Catholic Church sex scandal by victim count, and establishes the Boy Scouts of America as the largest pedophile organization in human history." - Steve Schmidt
I guess I was lucky -- I went through Scouting and the church without anybody diddling me.
I learned a great deal from the Scouts. Not so much from the church.

I've seen some news articles and comments on them getting upset about how Boy Scouts is changing its name to Scouts. They say theres no safe space for boys anymore.
Girls. Have. Been. Welcomed. For. Years. Now! And its great that they are!
I worked at a cub scout camp at the time when girls were first allowed and it was nothing but a positive experience. Boys and girls were happy to play and work together. I didn't hear even a single offhand complaint.
One of the most powerful moments in my 6 years of working there was that we had a mom nearly cry because she was so happy she could bring her daughter to camp. She lived in a family of all eagle scouts. She'd gone to every meeting and camp out but had never been allowed to participate or be aknowlege for her work. She was so happy her daughter got the opportunity she hadn't
And honestly, same girl. I grew up with a single mom, so where my brother went, I went because I couldn't be left home alone. I went to SO many meetings, but i was never allowed to earn badges, shoot bow and arrows, or race pinewood derbies. No, Girl scouts is not the same. (It can be very good, but its far less structured, so many troops are lack luster.) Even though I was past the age to join, girls being able to join scouts meant so much to me too.
But like seriously, other countries have been co-ed for a long long time now. Its about time we caught up.
