in high school, one year, we had a class trip to Boston to look at like historical shit or something. the school had booked hotel rooms, under the amusing assumption that four randomly grouped high schoolers would amicably share a hotel room.

being the least normal/masculine/forward/straight of my group, I was immediately relegated to sleep on the floor, as the other boys were too homophobic to even consider sharing beds and someone with more social capital had already claimed the couch.

in my room, in one of the beds, was J - the star of the basketball team, and definitely the most cool/athletic kid in the grade. he was regaling the others with stories of the different girls he's hooked up with at different away games.

scrolling through the list of contacts on his phone as proof, he grinned, explaining that the secret was to not have a girlfriend at home, so he can tell each new girl that he doesn't have a girlfriend at home, and then add them to his collection of not-at-home girlfriends who each think they are in an exclusive long distance relationship with him. the guy literally had like five girls in his rotation at the time.

he ended up going to the NBA, but his career was cut short by drug charges and I think he eventually started playing in Europe or something.

one of the other guys in the room - I think the guy on the couch - was currently Kinda dating one of the girls at the school also on the trip. after the boys discovered that one of the channels on the hotel TV was porn, he texted his kinda gf telling her that she and the girls in her room needed to turn the TV on to that channel because The Notebook was on and he knew how much she and her friends liked it.

I think I used a towel as a blanket, but they gave me one of the pillows from the couch.
