'Yes,' said M. de Boville. 'I even had occasion to see the man in 1816 or 1817, and you could only enter his cell with a squad of soldiers. The man made a deep impression on me; I shall never forget his face.' The Englishman gave a hint of a smile.
This conversation is so fucking funny.
'I understand. That must have put an end to the plans for escape.' 'As far as the dead man was concerned, yes,' M. de Boville replied. 'But not for the one who was left alive. On the contrary, this Dantes saw the means to hasten his escape. No doubt he thought that prisoners who die in the Château d'If are buried in an ordinary cemetery. He moved the dead man into his own cell, took his place in the shroud into which he had been sewn and waited for the body to be buried.' 'That was a risky plan, arguing some courage,' the Englishman said.
Dantes: wow you know this Dantes guy actually sounds pretty impressive, pretty cool don't you think?
'Yes, Monsieur,' the inspector went on. 'You can just imagine the fugitive's amazement when he felt himself falling from the top of the cliff. I should like to have seen his face at that moment.' 'It would have been difficult.' 'No matter!' said M. de Boville, in much better humour, now that he was certain of recovering his two hundred thousand francs. 'No matter! I can still imagine it!' And he burst out laughing. 'So can I,' said the Englishman, starting to laugh in his turn, but in the way that the English laugh, through clenched teeth.
Dantes, gritting his teeth: fuckyoufuckyoufuckyoufuckyou
Narrator: he laughed along in typical English fashion

Theory: Who was conspiring with Nick?
In season 2 of the All Saints Street donghua Nick's goal is to take the Demon King's powers from Neil. His first attempt by making a deal with Demon King directly fails (S2E02) and he would later get a call from a shadow figure (S02E04). That is how we learn that he was not working alone; someone was helping him find a method to absorb the Demon King's power.
As of now (Season 4) nothing has been revealed about this figure even if they still appear in the opening and Nick has turned 'good'. Because the Demong King story line is wholly original to the adaptation, there is no hint as to who this person might be in the manhua either. That can't stop me from speculating. I have three theories right now as it who could it be. Spoilers for two yet to be introduced manghua characters.
First Suspect: Will Bovil
First, I'll start with my least likely suspect. Will was introduced in Chapter 386; his black horns indicate that he is from a noble lineage of demons. He is very powerful, probably the most powerful out of all the demons in the series right now. He and his family could easily be rewritten to be connected to the Demon King (who coincidentally has a black color scheme) in the adaptation.
Outside of this tenuous connection there is also the note that Nick receives being written in ochre yellow. The eye color in the official illustrations is flexible. Most of the time all demons will have a yellow eye color, but in the most recent 7th anniversary illustration Will and his brother have the most intense yellow shade eye color that matches with the note. An even weaker connection is that the scheme for the clubs line (The one with Will as king) in the 6th anniversary deck is yellow, admittedly for the 7th anniversary the color scheme is now purple.
The weakest point of this theory is that none of the actions taken by the shadow figure fit Will's apathetic character at all. He isn't one to seek power, or anything outside of being with Sasha really. It would be too OOC and while the adaptation has significantly changed some characters (Damao being the biggest example) I think it could be a step too far to make Will a villain.
Second Suspect: Witt 'Iron Fang'
Iron Fang is a commoner vampire introduced in Chapter 412. He befriends Lynn online to scam him, but Ira stops him and turns him in to the police because Iron Fang is an international smuggler. Iron Fang is the closest that we have to a straight up 'bad guy' in 1031 WSJ. One of the most recent fantasy AU comics (Ch 780) makes him a confidant that betrayed the king Lynn to usurp his throne. If anyone could be a villain in the adaptation is him.
As he is a smuggler it would also explain how he got the book and later on the 'wand' to extract the Demon King's powers. Iron Fang also displayed a disdain towards angels, giving him a motive for why he would want to awaken the Demon King: destroy the current peace between evil beings and angels.
The biggest point against it being Iron fang, is that he was introduced too close to when the anime was being released. March/April 2020 was the first strip where he appears. Season 1 was released in April 2020 with season 2 releasing in October, but obviously the donghua was being worked on way before that. However, Iron Fang could easily retroactively be made to be this shadowy figure even if back then they had no idea who this character would be. Which leads me to...
Third Suspect: New character
The dongua has created a few, admittedly nameless, characters. Mostly the supernatural league leaders are all original and of course the Demon King himself. I can see out suspect being a new character, maybe someone to contrast with the Demon King. Previously I was rambling about the demons' yellow eye color matching a note, but you know what group is also associated with yellow/gold?
I think an angel villain would be an interesting twist, but I'm just a humble reader and this is just my opinion. Right now, anything is possible, and I trust the team behind the adaptation to cook up something good.
Thanks for reading my insane ramblings and if all my theorizing turns out to be MatPat levels of wrong you are free to make fun of me for like a month.

The Count of Monte Cristo limited series Episode 5 thoughts
Things are heating up and some of the participants are starting to sweat! Enter two of the favourites, Haydee and Eugenie! (Spoilers under the cut.)
I actually watched this twice bc I took a break from watching yesterday and then couldn't remember all the details, which is typical for me, and I took notes the second time. So this will get quite detailed.
Hermine and Villefort have a secret meeting in a carriage while he's on the way from the court and discuss the story told by the count at the dinner party in Auteuil. Villefort swears the baby was dead when he buried him but Hermine has been in distress ever since the party and she is not sure that the count is just telling tales. Villefort reminds her they will be ruined if anything comes out. It's called think before you stick your dick into a woman who is not your wife, Gerard.
Villefort has engaged Boville, an inspector of the police, to make enquiries about the count. Boville gives him the details he dug up on Jacques Zaccone, but of course that's exactly what the count wants them to think.
The count comes to the bank of Danglars to open an account. While they talk, the count lets Danglars know he has looked into him and that he knows he used to work for Morrel and Sons.
Haydee arrives at the count's house in Paris. Now, you know how I have been making fun of that one line in that Variety article: "Haydee is not a frightened slave, but a brave and empowered woman." Well, at the first sight of her, stepping out the carriage, she looks very frightened. But why the hell wouldn't she be? Like, is it a crime to be scared after going through what she went through and now been sold to another stranger? She won't even let Jacopo take her bag (side note, the bag she carries reminds me of the bag Anne of Green Gables has in the Sullivan adaptation. Anne is my favourite heroine of all time.) Jacopo leads her inside, where he introduces Isabelle, that character I have been wondering about, who has been hired as her maid. Isabelle shows her around; Haydee has her own rooms and the whole upper floor, but she is still confused. When the count returns home, he finds her sitting on the stairs with her bag and she asks him what he means to do with her and calls him "master". To which the count responds that she is free now. He knows she is the daughter of Ali Pasha and that her father was betrayed and killed in Algiers (if I understand this correctly, this Haydee is Algerian, not Albanian). The man the count bought her from was the sultan of Amir--a very quick Google search didn't bring up anything relevant, so I take it he is fictional. They sit down and have tea and talk and the count is very gentle with her and even gives her a sort of a trigger warning before he starts asking her questions about her father. He has been invited to the annual ball at the de Morcerfs and has asked her to come as his plus one and then buys her new dresses. And honestly, I like the way they handled this. Also, I ship them.
Breakfast at de Morcerf is like reading a Lady Whistledown column (for those who don't know, that's a Bridgerton reference). Albert informs his parents that the count opened an account with Danglars and Fernand casually talks about Hermine's affair with Debray, who gives her insider information on stocks which she passes to her husband.
The count does his shenanigans with the telegraph while he drugs the operator. The guy was only out for a few minutes. Video here. As a result, Danglars sells his Spanish bonds and is not happy when it turns out there was no uprising in Spain. He admonishes Debray and orders him to return the money he lost on this blunder.
The count meets the Morrels at what appears to be a club. Old M. Morrel passed away and Julie and Max sold his business and moved to Paris. Later he visits them and finds out they still keep the purse that contained the money that saved them. Max says their father believed their saviour came from beyond the grave and that it was Edmond Dantes.
Valentine wheels her grandfather around in the wheelchair in their garden. She's so sweet. Little Edouard has some sort of seizure and his mother applies the substance she got from the count at the dinner party. It works, the seizure stops.
Valentine is not happy about having to be married to Franz and Albert is not happy about having to be married to Eugenie. (He considers her a friend he's known from childhood.) He confides this to the count, who promises to help. He also knows about Max and valentine, as Valentine came to the Morrel's house while he was visiting and he saw they were in love.
So far no strict confirmation of Eugenie and Louise's relationship but it is suggestive. Hopefully we'll see more of them.
At the ball, the count and Mercedes talk and she asks him about Haydee and tells him that "people will talk" bc Haydee lives at his house. Like, lady, the biggest gossipers live at your own house, and also, what's it to you? Speaking of which, de Morcerfs' maid Marie is having an affair with Caderousse.
As for Caderousse, the count orders him not to come to his house again and only communicate via Jacopo. He knows there are policemen outside his house (Villefort's work.) The count plainly shows the absolute contempt he has for Caderousse.
The count sends Jacopo to Rome to get Vampa and bring him to Paris. Vampa still owes him for saving Peppino, who was Vampa's cousin. From what I've been told, Vampa will play a fake aristocrat in Paris, who I guess will court Eugenie. We'll see how that goes. No Benedetto/Andrea so far, but he exists in this universe.
I realise I like all the young people in this story. Most of the actors don't have many credits to their name, so I hope this series will be a good start for them. The acting is good all around, except for the dude who plays Debray, idk he seems to me a bit stilted.
