Oil can turn the well into a geothermal energy production. This can also be done in countries like russia and saudi arabia as an example.

Orphaned wells can contaminate water supplies, degrade ecosystems, and emit methane and other air pollutants. The EPA estimates that methane emissions from over 2 million inactive, unplugged wells range from 7–20 million metric tons per year, which is roughly the same as the emissions of 2–5 million cars. 

The federal government has pledged billions of dollars to plug thousands of abandoned oil wells across the country. The REGROW Act, which is part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, includes $4.7 billion in funds for plugging and maintaining orphaned wells. 

Now this can be done also with natural gas Wells as well turning them into geothermal energy.
