Hygge Inspired Autumn/Winter Wedding
I feel very blessed to know and work alongside some fantastic people; local wedding suppliers who get me and my aesthetic. It's one of the things I love most about my job.
This week we brought to life a Scandinavian/Hygge inspired wedding shoot at the East Cliff Cottage Hotel in Bournemouth (you may have seen my first attempt at a Facebook live video). It's a lovely little place, tucked just behind the main east cliff road, perfectly suited to this style of shoot, and would be an ideal location for an intimate wedding reception.
A few years ago, Rob and I took a holiday in Copenhagen and instantly fell in love with the city, the people, their immense style and their way of life. Last month, we flew out to Stockholm to continue our new found Scandinavian obsession, and the same feelings came flooding back. It was clear what I wanted to do with out next collaborative shoot, and I knew just the right people to be involved in it.
I delved into my copy of 'The Little Book of Hygge' and read up on the Hygge manifesto. It has ten points, which cover the basics to what Hygge is all about.
Atmosphere - Turn down the lights.
Presence - Be here now. Turn of the phones.
Pleasure - Coffee, chocolate, cookies, cakes, candy. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
Equality - 'We' over 'me'. Share the tasks and the airtime.
Gratitude - Take it in. This might be as good as it gets.
Harmony - It's not a competition. We already like you. There is no need to brag about your achievements.
Comfort - Get comfy. Take a break. It's all about relaxation.
Truce - No drama. Let's discuss politics another day.
Togetherness - Build relationships and narratives. 'Do you remember the time we...?'
Shelter - This is your tribe. This is a place of peace and security.
I'm pretty sure these points can be applied to literally every aspect of your life, including your wedding. My hope from this post is that you can take some inspiration from our combined effort, and apply it to your autumn/winter weddings, wherever you have them. We also wanted to show you that there is so much more scope out there for styling your autumn/winter wedding - it doesn't all have to be about red, silver and white.
There is so much choice out there and available to us nowadays, it's so easy to forget or look passed the things we already have.
Incorporate items you have at home.
Most of this shoot was pieced together using things we all had in our own homes, and they came together perfectly. You don't need to spend thousands of pounds on things you will never use again. Why be wasteful when you already have everything you need. Or at least buy something you will re-use or keep for the future.
None of your guests will care an iota about the money you've spent/not spent on your wedding day - it's your wedding, not theirs! What they will care about is how much love you've put into it and how much fun everyone else is having, the atmosphere on the day, the general feeling of love and togetherness everyone has on the day. Believe me, I've been at weddings where I've felt part of the family and I've been at those where you feel very isolated. You don't want it to be the latter.
Okay, that's enough from me for now.
Here's some suppliers you might want to be a part of your day.

May, June, July 2019 reviews
photo: taken on Nic Bennett’s phone On Wed 1st May, I once again set off to see Idlewild. This time at the Cambridge Junction with support from Hamish Hawk. Realising I had met him before, in his record shop in Edinbrugh, his onstage presence had more in common with Morrissey than someone in retail. Whilst Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason played the larger Corn Exchange, Hamish’s band made way for solo/acoustic number 'Catherine Opens a Window' - his answer to The Smiths' 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want' or 'Asleep' - as Hamish gave the occasional gaze over to the talkative bar area during this delicate section. Back catalogue and recent EP songs were performed, which were all new to this audience.
The next day was the beginning of three nights at Outside The Box at the Royal Oak New Malden: Russell Howard on Thursday, Milton Jones on Friday and Al Murray on Saturday. I left the later early to catch Richard Ashcroft at The Olympia but train delays meant that by the time I arrived, he was already on to his '90s nostalgic hit parade, having missed the minimal selection of newer material. We were back at Outside The Box at Langleys, Surbiton for Romesh Ranganathan, before another Al Murray show there.
photo: taken on Nic Bennett’s phone
Having previously seen Dean Friedman at Teddington Arts Centre (a large church near Kingston), a year or so ago, he's continued to be a frequent visitor from over the pond; selling out Pizza Expresses and country pubs. This time, he's deservedly in prestigious theatre, The Bloomsbury, close to central London but sadly only a few are in attendance. It's a similar set to before; covering songs from all of his albums on piano and guitar. Once again, he takes moments to advertise future gigs and what merch he has for sale - but a show just focusing on his wonderful songbook would have been much more credible. He always seems to be looking towards the future whilst his songs tell his past.
photo: taken on Nic Bennett’s phone
On the Tuesday, I was back in Cambridge - this time for the Manic Street Preachers at the Corn Exchange; a venue we were due to return to last month the cancelled Ryan Adams tour. Standing can get uncomfortably crowded in there, and the reserved seating on the balcony gets worse the closer to the front, due to the perspex safety screen. There were a few chairs put out just under the balcony/above the standing, which isn't a bad spot though. Marking 19 years and 8 months since the release of 'This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours', the adverts suggested that they would be playing the album in order, in its entirety - to which they did neither. Not the only marketing con to help make a fast buck, as it looked like they had bought all the unofficial £5 t shirts from outside gigs in 1998, and were now selling them for £30. The extra money was spent on more live session musicians for the tour, with the highlights being the two songs from latest LP ‘Resistance Is Futile’.
photo: taken on Nic Bennett’s phone
The following evening, From The Jam, were at Epsom Playhouse. The small, all seated theatre saw original The Jam member, Bruce Foxton, battle through the flu to perform acoustic renditions of hits, album tracks and b-sides with Russell Hastings having permanently taken Paul Weller's place, whilst he continues to evolve as a successful solo artist. Support act, Nine Below Zero re-emerge to join in on a couple of numbers for an audience of one type and age bracket.
Monday afternoon's set from James Walsh at the Groucho Club saw Sam Fender and band turn up with journalist, Gordan Smart, and Josh McClorey from The Strypes, whom had to turn down the opportunity to be Weller's new guitarist whilst Steve Cradock's out with The Specials. The next day saw Brushy One String's first ever London show at The Blues Kitchen in Camden. With just one A (5th) string on his acoustic guitar, Jamacain musician, Andrew Chin, performed his Youtube hit 'Chicken in the Corn', along with other originals and Reggae classics. On Thursday, Lights was over from Canada but we decided to see Mull Historical Society’s stripped back set at Bush Hall on a night where the songs without Bernard Butler on guitar sounded best. After All Points East festival on the last Friday of the month, where Bring Me The Horizon topped the bill, we were at the Fighting Cocks, Kingtson for Outside The Box with Nick Helme, before we returned to the same club at Langleys Surbiton (Harry Hill, Matt Forde, Kerry Godliman), West Molesey Barn Theatre (Andy Parsons), Royal Oak, New Malden (Harry Hill [again], followed by just making Andy Parsons [again], after coming back from a live session on Bournemouth Radio, the next night]).
Paul Weller brought his ever changing set list to Bedgebury Pinetum forest before we witnessed David Blaine wow Hammersmith Apollo, the night before we attended Metallica at Twickenham stadium. The following evening saw Rhys James headline the New Malden Sports Ground club before I was back at Outside The Box in Kingston for Romesh Ranganathan, Al Lubel and Adam Bloom.
I wasn’t that impressed with my first trip to Exeter but Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds were mostly on top form at Powderham Castle. I would have liked The Charlatans’ ‘90s’ greatest hits support set to have have been more varied and up to date but they were being pleasing the majority.
photo: taken on Nic Bennett’s phone
After Josh Widdicombe at Outside The Box in Surbiton at Langleys on the first day of July, I was at another Paul Weller show on Sunday, in Greenwich. Another Outside The Box the following evening, in Kingston, saw Angelos Epithemiou top the bill before Wednesday night’s Cosmo Sheldrake gig at the Oval Space was shut down early due to curfew laws – something he won’t have as much of a problem with on his European tour. Bob Dylan and Neil Young at Hyde Park on the Friday was followed by a daytime trip to Dartford’s free festival for The Farm and The Lightning Seeds.
The next day we were at On Blackheath, where Morcheeba had an afternoon slot. The festival seemed much smaller than previous years and the signs for what you could and couldn’t bring in were different to what the security would snatch from you so, we didn’t stick around.
On Tuesday, Doves played a nostalgic set at Sommerset House before The Good, The Bad & The Queen hosted a much better evening of new music. Harry Enfield, Miles Kane and Jeff Wootton were amongst the smaller crowd, to the night before, as Damon Albarn’s group engaged and impressed. After meeting Tom Speight on the train home, we went along to his short set, opening for The Lighthouse Family at a Banquet Records night, before a seaside trip back to Folkestone for Graham Nash at the Leas Cliff Hall. I’m still not sure Michael Barakan (Shane Fontayne) works on guitar for him, although I did like some of his country style, and the show worked much better with the addition of James Raymond on keys.

COUPLE NAMES: Looby & Ryan Bear
WEDDING DATE: 11th November 2018
WEDDING LOCATION: The Green Cornwall:
HOW AND WHERE DID YOU MEET: We met through my sister, we were both out with her and met that night, Ryan approached me first as we had a brief conversation before online. I must add that we met in the dingiest club in Bournemouth, this is what we bonded over!
WEDDING THEME / STYLE DESCRIPTION:

DESCRIPTION OF THE WEDDING DAY:
We decided to elope and planned it a year before. I have no idea how we kept it secret for so long! The day was perfect, we woke up together and went into the local town to get my hair and make up done. This is also when we sent out our announcement cards so that people would find out the next day, leaving the evening totally stress free. The venue we chose was absolutely perfect, very pretty. We took our two pugs and stayed in a little cottage on the grounds.
After having my hair and makeup done by some lovely ladies we headed back and got ready together, no stress! We then walked to the barn, where we were married, together. The ceremony was lovely, so intimate and personal. We had our lovely photographer and a member of staff from The Green as our witnesses.
Following the ceremony we had some photos taken by Mark, he made us feel so comfortable! We chose to marry quite late in the day and so there wasn’t much daylight but we still got some incredible photographs.
We then went back to our cottage, changed out of our wedding clothes and soon after a chef came over to cook us a three course meal. He was absolutely fantastic and made us the best food we’ve ever tasted!
After the chef left we just chilled out, played some battleships and watched Netflix.
All in all it was a perfect day and night.

Visiting Highcliffe Castle from Marsham Court Hotel
A vacation in Bournemouth can include a wide range of conditioning and some of these are both literal and graphic at the same time. This includes Highcliffe Castle, a magnific grade- 1 listed structure from the early 19th century that stands just east of Christchurch. And Bournemouth family hotel Marsham Court hotel provides the perfect base to visit it.
The History of Highcliffe Castle
Although it incorporates a couple of sections of an aged structure, Highcliffe Castle was erected in the 1830s by Charles Stuart, 1st Baron Stuart de Rothsay. The grandson of the former high minister, the Earl of Bute, Stuart had been a crucial assistant to the Duke of Wellington, latterly serving as minister to France and Russia.
Having bought back part of his forefather’s estate, he erected Highcliffe Castle, incorporating gravestone from two demolished mediaeval structures in Normandy, as well as a 16th- century oriel window and a stained- glass window. The castle passed down in his family until just after World War 2, although it had several tenants during the 20th century Read More.....

Under The Surface
Under the surface Situated documentary using Development Coding skills. To make this app we used XCODE in swift language. The app guide shows the functions we considered and used in our app. Our app took users on a ghost walk around bournemouth at 3 particular locations where subjects were found to talk about their paranormal experiences. We so far have 3 locations but hope to create more in the future.
Intentions for future plans or diagrams for our App- As our locations are quite away from each other, to improve the app we would create more of a user journey where they can be entertained traveling from one location to another during the ghost walk. This is due to the user may becoming disinterested if its a 10 minute drive or 30 minute walk away. For instance, we could add themed music throughout the background of the app so when user is driving they can be entertained yet meet health and safety regulations due to the no-phone law while driving. And for user walking we would of hoped to create a little quiz on the documentary they just watched on the subjects experiences and the location history. These improvements could allow us to collect data and analytics on our users which could tell us more about who we are appealing to.
Subjects interviewed within the app

Hitched - Jason+George
Well, what can I say about this one...
This was a first - a first of many more to come, a dream come true, a day filled with truly beautiful moments. Ever since I proposed to Rob back in 2008, to our civil partnership ceremony in 2011, to our upgrade to marriage in 2015, to being a wedding photographer myself, I've wanted nothing more than to be able to capture these precious moments for another gay couple.
After much wishing and dropping a multitude of hints on my Facebook page, to writing a blog that almost instantly got the attention of George and his now husband, Jason, I finally got what I wanted. My mum always said that you make your own dreams come true, and as always, she was right. You are the builder of your own dreams, so there's no point just dreaming them, you have to chase them and make them come true.
Thursday 24th August was the day Jason and George's dreams came true, and the moment they said their 'I do's' I had to hold back a tear or two. That moment made me feel every emotion I felt the day Rob and I said 'I do' to one another.
It was similar to our day on so many levels: A town hall ceremony at the Bournemouth Town Hall, followed by the reception at The Dudsbury Country Club, attended by their closest family and friends. The boys suits were from Zara and River Island, the beautiful wedding cake from Pandora's Bakery in Ferndown, and flowers/buttonholes from Amore Flowers.
Best of all for me, was I finally got to make use of my coloured smoke flares. I've been dying to use them, and both grooms were totally up for having a few shots done with them.
For those who don't already know, George is a fabulous drag artist known as Marilyn Mountbatten, and Jason, a drag DJ, Miss SeeQueen. Go follow them on Instagram, or better still, go see them live at Cafe Jagos before they head off on their next big adventure together, to London.
You guys helped make a dream of mine come true, so I wish you both the brightest future together. I hope all of your dreams come true.
As always, here's a selection of photos from their day. Enjoy!
Until next time,
R x

Weekends Away in Beautiful Bournemouth
The largest resort in Dorset, Bournemouth was voted the UK’s best beach in the Travellers’ Choice award for the second year in a row. This seven-mile stretch of perfect coastline and Blue Flag beaches provide a wonderful setting for your weekend away in beautiful Bournemouth.
It has been branded “the coast with the most”. Water sports abound, or simply walk, run or cycle along the sandy beaches, through the beautifully maintained Victorian gardens or along the majestic clifftops. Looking for a fun-filled hen party weekend? Before heading out for a night on the town, there are also plenty of opportunities to try surfing, paddle-boarding or jet skiing.
As a seaside getaway, you can’t ask for more. A magnificent cliff line guards the bay below. Thanks to its own micro-climate, the area has some of the warmest sea temperatures in the UK. There are also numerous spots to enjoy the spectacular views across to the Isle of Wight and the Purbecks, so make sure you take your deckchairs along.
Beach Huts
Did you know that Bournemouth invented the modern beach hut 100 years ago and boasts the oldest beach huts in the country? The town was also the first place in the UK to have purpose-built beach huts. The first beach hut, built in 1909, is marked with a Blue Plaque near the Bournemouth Seafront Office (to the east of Bournemouth Pier). If you do intend to spend the day at the beach, you can hire one of the 250 beach huts. These are available for weekly, daily and period hire. What better way to spend the day relaxing with friends and family while appreciating the coastal views? There are beach huts available at Alum Chine, Durley Chine, Bournemouth, Boscombe, Southbourne and Fisherman’s Walk. With plenty of choices they are available for hire from as little as £125 a week.
Bournemouth’s beautiful coastline offers loads of fun things to do all year round as it hosts over 500 fantastic events and festivals. August sees the annual Bournemouth Air Festival. The biggest event of its kind in the world – there are flying displays, evening entertainment, shopping and much more. And what’s even better is that it’s FREE. Also in August, there are free Friday night fireworks display on Bournemouth Pier. In October there’s the Arts By The Sea, with 10 days of events, installations and experiences for everyone to enjoy.
Festivals, Concerts and More
Whatever time of year you are planning your weekend in beautiful Bournemouth you will find events and festivals and concerts available.
The Shake and Stir Vintage Festival in June takes place in Southbourne. It has become renowned locally and across the South of England for its vintage-themed live entertainment and music. Along with local food & drink, trade stalls, vintage and classic cars, mods and rockers, and classic bikes.
The beautiful coastline lends itself to a range of outdoor activities, from swims and runs, including the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, to water sports and beach games. There are also several arts events throughout the year, including the Arts by the Sea Festival mentioned above. Comedy and live music are another drawcard, and events take place both in the town itself as well as in surrounding villages.
Bournemouth also welcomes some of the biggest dance shows and competitions to the town to its world-class performance venues. From ballet and ballroom to contemporary and conceptual, there’s always something to entertain you. The international concert venues, museums and theatres put on a huge variety of events throughout the year. From displays of art and sculpture to lifestyle exhibitions – all of them will inspire you with ideas for your upcoming wedding, or you can try the latest health and fitness fad.
The Land Train
Getting around the town is made easy with the Land Train, which runs along the promenade and means you don’t have to worry about driving after that sneeky afternoon G&T. You can get from Bournemouth Pier to Boscombe Pier; via Boscombe Precinct and Gardens; from Bournemouth Pier to Alum Chine; and along the new route from Boscombe Pier to Bournemouth Pier via the East Overcliff for remarkable coastal views.
Amusements, Shopping & Food
And, luckily, when that good old British summer rain sets in, there is a range of amusements or cinema complexes where you can shelter, while still having fun. Even better, there is a huge selection of wonderful high street and independent shops where you can fulfil your inner retail therapy obsession. Bournemouth is much more than simply sand and sea. Whether you are looking for the latest fashion trends, antique jewellery from Westover Road or a piece of art, you’re bound to find it in the town or in the nearby coastal villages.
Perfect sunsets will end off your day on a good note as you get ready for a party at some of the local nightclubs. After an activity-filled day, head for one of the hundreds of bustling restaurants, cafes and bars in the centre of town. Fresh seafood, local produce, traditional cream teas… the choice is all yours. There are award-winning restaurants, trendy cocktail bars, spacious pubs and fast food chains all over the place so you’ll never be stuck for anywhere to eat.
So, Bournemouth really is part of the “coast with the most”. Whether you’re on a hen party or just want a weekend away in beautiful Bournemouth, this seaside resort offers everything you could possibly want. As The Independent says in one of the numerous articles about the town, it is the quintessential seaside escape and a chic bolthole to boot. The Bournemouth Townhouse is the perfect place to stay, sleeping 19 guests, just a short stroll from the beach.

Tuesday 28th May MSG meeting
It looked like it was going to be another meeting short-changed of personnel ,Ann and George had phoned to say they had other arrangements,as did Peter ,Bob i spoke to in the morning ,but there was no show there,Sonia was busy also ,Olive was going to a wedding, and Lee and Richard were in sunnier climes.,and Kathy was busy dealing with a problem with her son Matthew. However 16 members made it and 6 Tovil club members..We did have two guests arrive ,which was June Dines and her carer Diane ,who was delighted to link up with her old buddies Barry and Mavis Walker. There was the usual gossip and lots of talk about our up and coming excursion to Bournemouth and Mick googling the scooter he may be in charge with whilst there. The usual raffle took place headed by myself and Ann Judge on this occasion followed by a shortened version of bingo with only two games as there was a lack of funds ,the first game was won by Jenny in the corner from Tovil ,who was delighted with £10,and guess who won the £20 top prize, WELL JUNE OF COURSE,which made her visit all the more delightful.Diane and June have put their names down and chosen their menu choice for our August jaunt on Weds 14th to the Dog and Duck at Pluck’s Gutter ,where we will be entertained by our old buddy Geoff Stevens. They may even have a couple more guests from Kings Lodge interested. The time of the coach(10.30) was announced to be at Tovil for the off to Bournemouth on Fri 7th June ,and we were all done and dusted and out of the venue by 2 o’clock ,another meeting concluded.
