Hygge Inspired Autumn/Winter Wedding
I feel very blessed to know and work alongside some fantastic people; local wedding suppliers who get me and my aesthetic. It's one of the things I love most about my job.
This week we brought to life a Scandinavian/Hygge inspired wedding shoot at the East Cliff Cottage Hotel in Bournemouth (you may have seen my first attempt at a Facebook live video). It's a lovely little place, tucked just behind the main east cliff road, perfectly suited to this style of shoot, and would be an ideal location for an intimate wedding reception.
A few years ago, Rob and I took a holiday in Copenhagen and instantly fell in love with the city, the people, their immense style and their way of life. Last month, we flew out to Stockholm to continue our new found Scandinavian obsession, and the same feelings came flooding back. It was clear what I wanted to do with out next collaborative shoot, and I knew just the right people to be involved in it.
I delved into my copy of 'The Little Book of Hygge' and read up on the Hygge manifesto. It has ten points, which cover the basics to what Hygge is all about.
Atmosphere - Turn down the lights.
Presence - Be here now. Turn of the phones.
Pleasure - Coffee, chocolate, cookies, cakes, candy. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
Equality - 'We' over 'me'. Share the tasks and the airtime.
Gratitude - Take it in. This might be as good as it gets.
Harmony - It's not a competition. We already like you. There is no need to brag about your achievements.
Comfort - Get comfy. Take a break. It's all about relaxation.
Truce - No drama. Let's discuss politics another day.
Togetherness - Build relationships and narratives. 'Do you remember the time we...?'
Shelter - This is your tribe. This is a place of peace and security.
I'm pretty sure these points can be applied to literally every aspect of your life, including your wedding. My hope from this post is that you can take some inspiration from our combined effort, and apply it to your autumn/winter weddings, wherever you have them. We also wanted to show you that there is so much more scope out there for styling your autumn/winter wedding - it doesn't all have to be about red, silver and white.
There is so much choice out there and available to us nowadays, it's so easy to forget or look passed the things we already have.
Incorporate items you have at home.
Most of this shoot was pieced together using things we all had in our own homes, and they came together perfectly. You don't need to spend thousands of pounds on things you will never use again. Why be wasteful when you already have everything you need. Or at least buy something you will re-use or keep for the future.
None of your guests will care an iota about the money you've spent/not spent on your wedding day - it's your wedding, not theirs! What they will care about is how much love you've put into it and how much fun everyone else is having, the atmosphere on the day, the general feeling of love and togetherness everyone has on the day. Believe me, I've been at weddings where I've felt part of the family and I've been at those where you feel very isolated. You don't want it to be the latter.
Okay, that's enough from me for now.
Here's some suppliers you might want to be a part of your day.

How do you decorate yourself for a winter wedding?
Statistically, the winter months are the least popular time of the year to get married, but winter weddings are seriously underrated in reality. A sense of enchantment and magic fills the entire season (especially when it snows), and the celebratory spirit around the holidays can bring your big day an added sense of togetherness. Choosing the right winter wedding colours will be an important part of your planning process if you're getting married between November and March. We've hand-picked some of our favourite winter wedding colour palettes to get you started, whether you're imagining a holiday-themed wedding or looking for alternative decor inspiration.
What are some good winter wedding colours?
Seasonal colours are some of the most popular winter wedding colours, such as red, burgundy, emerald green, and navy blue, and for good reason. Whether you pick one of these colours or use a combination of several, your winter wedding decor will add wealth and glamour to the darker jewel tones. As they add an element of shimmer that is both festive and romantic, metallic gold and silver are also extremely suitable for a winter wedding.
There are obvious ways of decorating a winter wedding, such as a theme for a Christmas wedding or a decor inspired by winter wonderland. But if seasonal decorations aren't quite what you had in mind, there are plenty of other options that will all work for winter events, just to name a few. Old Hollywood glam, classic black tie, or even a rustic woodland theme. Start by thinking about which colours you like if you have trouble choosing a winter wedding theme. Consider a Gatsby-themed wedding if you're gravitating towards a metallic colour palette. Go all out with a sultry, romantic subject complete with twinkling candles and string lights for pinks, reds, or purples.
Emerald and Blue-Navy
For both traditional and rustic wedding themes, this wintery duo works. An easy way of incorporating it? Plaid and flannel textiles, such as these cosy throw blankets, are illustrated above as wedding favours.
Gray and White
A white and grey colour palette will give a streamlined, ultra-chic aesthetic to your wedding day, perfect for a modern minimalist vibe. To give this colour palette some dimension and depth, use a variety of textures in your wedding stationery and decor, such as raw silk, velvet, vellum, or faux fur.
Pink Berry's
One of the finest winter wedding colour combinations is an assortment of berry-inspired colours (fuchsia, plum, raspberry) if you get married on the cusp of changing seasons, i.e. Early fall, or late spring. This rich palette is at the same time fun and romantic, and it works for a range of wedding venues.
Gold, black, white, and
What more timeless could it be? This colour combo can be whatever you want it to be, whether your style is classic, modern, or edgy, depending on how you style it. As a fourth accent colour, add pale mauve or lavender to soften the overall vibe.
Holographics soft
Holographic colours are on course to be one of the next big trends in decor. For a whimsical, celestial impact, pair pastel hues such as blush, lilac, and butter yellow with iridescent accents.
The black and plum
Burgundy is one of the most popular colours for winter weddings, but if you're looking for something that's a bit more unexpected, plum purple is an extremely stylish alternative. Rocking the big day with a tuxedo? Try to nail a fashion-forward look with a plum-hued jacket with black lapels.
Silver and Blue Light
Silver and light blue are an excellent duo for the airy, winter wonderland vibe. They will bring your wedding decor with a classic-meets-contemporary feel.
Orange charcoal and apricots
We love this palette of colours that is somehow cosy and elegant at the same time. Dark black and charcoal grey details round out a barely-there apricot orange hue.
Red and fuchsia
How sweet would these colours be for a wedding on Valentine's Day? For a Cupid-approved big day, use distinct shades of red and pink.
All White White
An all-white wedding, or perhaps a snow-covered landscape, is reminiscent of chilly winter temps. This monochromatic palette is modern, clean, uncomplicated, and surprisingly luxurious either way. Do not confuse that with being boring, though! You can focus on incorporating lots of different textures so that the colours don't fall flat by using only white tones for your winter wedding colours. To add dimension, mix various fabrics, plants, and greenery.
The Metallics
Metallic wedding colours can instantly elevate your décor when used as accents. But you will create an ultra-festive setting with a palette entirely comprised of metallics. For a New Year's Eve wedding, a pair of metallic gold and silver with dramatic black.
From maroon and brass
If you love antiques, try a maroon and brass colour palette when you have a vintage wedding theme. With lots of mercury glass vessels, mirrors, candles, and upholstered seats, we envision this luxury colour combo. Purple, Green, and Gray
Looking for non-traditional winter colours for weddings? We think this stylish trio will be loved by you. Earthy and a little bohemian is a colour palette of purple, grey, and green, especially when you incorporate fresh berries, pampas grass and greenery, and handmade paper.
Pink bow wedding shoes and ring box with green velvet Photography from Aurora
Jade and Mauve
A winterized version of the popular blush and eucalyptus combination, this sweet wedding colour palette is everywhere in spring and summer. These colours feel less springtime evening and more winter romance through the use of slightly darker tones-mauve instead of blush and jade green instead of eucalyptus. For warmth and shimmer, add touches of rose gold.
Red and white, red and white
We'll wait for a more iconic winter wedding duo. Red and white, and for good reason, are perhaps the most classic winter wedding colours of all time. They are synonymous with the holiday season and your wedding decor will instantly bring a sense of winter cheer.
Keeping the actual holiday decor to a minimum (save the reindeer, snowflakes, and Santa figurines for another day) is the trick of using these colours in a tasteful way. The colours alone will be enough to give all the Christmas-y vibes to your marriage. For this kind of palette, plaids, fresh evergreens, and metallic accents are all excellent pieces of decor.
White, green, and gold
Dress up your venue in green, white, and gold colours for a wedding that's glimmering and glowing. One of the most timeless options for your big day is this effortless winter wedding colour palette.
Moss and Green Olive
We love these silent colours for winter weddings. Without being above-the-top seasonal, moss and olive green fit into a wintery aesthetic. If you're going for an Old World wedding theme, these colours are also ideal because they pair beautifully with candle decor, antiques, and pieces of dark wood.
Purple and dark pewter
Dark purple and pewter are going to bring a glamorous event with the wow factor. Purple is a colour that is naturally regal, and when you pair it with shimmering silver tones and sequins, it becomes even more opulent.
Cream, Copper, and Gray
Whether you're hosting an upscale ballroom event or a rustic barn wedding, this near-neutral palette works for a range of wedding styles.
Blush, ivory, and green
This is similar, but not quite as stark, to the all-white palette. By combining blush and various shades of green with white and ivory tones, you achieve an aesthetic that is soft and romantic.
Red and brown in colour,
For a rustic winter wedding, a Christmas-themed wedding, or a romantic Valentine's Day fête, red and brown are a go-to colour combination. To keep your palette from feeling too dark, add hints of white or cream when you use these colours. Blue dusty, and green sage
Spring wedding colour palettes are traditionally associated with pastel blues and greens, but they instantly feel winter-appropriate when you pair them with darker colours, such as navy blue and rust.
Colors of Moody
Feeling a bit edgy and audacious? The solution is moody wedding colours. Dark colours such as burgundy, plum purple, and black bring your big day with a sense of drama and mystery. The end result is hauntingly lovely and a little bit gothic!
Blush and candy
At your wedding, serve up all the cosy hygge vibes with a blush and caramel colour palette. This hot brown hue can be incorporated into your big day in a few ways: wood plate chargers, dyed silk bouquet ribbons, a faux fur wrap, upholstered rental furniture, and a drip cake.
White and navy
Give the classic black and white combo a twist by opting instead for navy blue and white. If you are hosting a black tie or formal event, these sophisticated winter wedding colours are a stylish decision.

Interiors Envy: Hygge For Home
Reena has one of my favourite Instagram accounts – Hygge For Home, and we have even struck up one of those Insta friendships over the last year. She has also renovated her home into a Scandi-inspired dream and is a real High Street lover so we have loads in common. I was thrilled when she agreed to show us around her home for this week’s blogpost!
Reena, tell us about yourself – whereabouts are you based?
My name is Reena and I live in Cardiff in a terraced victorian house which comes with wonky walls, creaky floorboards, my three little ladies and my husband, none of which are perfect but I love them all and wouldn’t want it any other way!
I look after my little ones full time (they are 6, 4 and 2) but for the past two years I have also set up my own interiors business. This started with me documenting my journey of renovating our home in an affordable way with a young family on Instagram. I am really passionate about creating functional but cosy spaces and getting creative especially when you don’t have vast spaces or budgets to work with. The business took off and I now spend a lot of time working with brands to create content and I have also set up a blog because Instagram just doesn’t offer enough space to write and share everything that I want too.
You have an amazing Instagram account, when did you start?
When I gave up my job in PR to be at home with the little ladies in 2016, I really struggled as the jump from 2 to 3 was intense and life became harder. I was craving a creative outlet and focus other than my life as a Mum. I am really passionate about social media so wanted to start a blog but felt at that time I couldn’t commit to writing regularly enough. At the same time, I found myself living pretty much 24/7 in these four walls (which we had renovated in late 2015 but hadn’t decorated so it felt quite cold and clinical) so it became more important than ever to make my surroundings comfortable and relaxed. My sister had just returned from Denmark and I was moaning about needing to make the house feel more cosy and warm and she told me that what I was describing to her was “hygge” – the way the Danes lived and the importance they place on their homes and family time.
This gave me the idea to launch an Instagram account and start documenting what I was doing at home so Hygge for Home was born in October 2016. Around a month later, the concept of ‘Hygge’ appeared in the mainstream media and it gained a lot of interest. I think lots of people can relate to it especially here in the UK where we often have longer winters than summers so we spend a lot of our time indoors, although this year has definitely broken the mould!
There were only a handful of people sharing their homes back then but now there is a huge and thriving Interiors community on Instagram which is just brilliant and very inspiring.
How long have you lived in your current place?
We have been here for nearly 7 years. It’s the first house we have ever owned and it needed a lot of work. When we moved in we had a 9 month old baby and a wedding to plan which was 6 months later!
We spent all of our savings on the move and wedding but the bathroom really needed doing as we didn’t have a shower and with a baby anyone knows what an utter luxury a bath becomes and they are not time efficient so that was the first room we tackled. However, it was also a really tricky and expensive one to start with as the boiler was in there and had to be moved downstairs but we ended up in a 3m by 1.5 metre sloping roof space with a separate shower, toilet, sink and the all important non negotiable (with the husband) roll top bath!
We then waited a few years and in 2015 we gutted and renovated the entire downstairs. We moved out for a few months and replaced everything, had walls plastered, had a wood burner installed, new kitchen etc and my husband even did a bit of DIY and picked the worst job ever which was putting up coving. He has said never again!
We also had cowboy builders so none of what we did was straight forward but that’s a story for another day!
I love your kitchen cabinet – I think this originally Ikea?
The kitchen cabinet is indeed from Ikea! It’s my go to place for all of my storage issues which I have many of in this house. When we renovated we wanted to create a kitchen diner and also allow more light into the space. I didn’t want kitchen cabinets high up on the wall because it’s a fairly low ceiling so we have hardly any cupboard storage space! Initially I wanted a vintage armoire or antique medicinal cupboard but they were too expensive so I got this one from Ikea and painted it in Annie Sloan Graphite and bought rose gold handles from the same range as my cup handles on the kitchen cabinets. We use the cabinet as our larder.
Where are your kitchen cabinets from?
Our kitchen cabinets are from Howdens. I really wanted a bespoke looking kitchen so I only bought the doors from there and sourced everything else separately. It’s also cheaper to do it this way. At the time I also wanted dark grey or indigo but I couldn’t find any of the darker colours on the high street. It’s a lot more fashionable now so lots more choice.
My Mum thinks we are mad as we have no drawers in our kitchen! Only one under the oven for frying pans. We just didn’t have the width available on any of the cabinets to accommodate drawers as we also have an integrated washing machine and dishwasher so we keep lots of things out on top of the work surfaces. For me having things out on show like cutlery and things we use every day is fine, I prefer that look and again think it adds to the cosiness and homeliness. I definitely don’t mind a little clutter which is a good job with my little ladies in tow!
I sourced my own rose gold handles for the cabinets and then added lighting above the kitchen work surface instead of having too many spotlights. They are just plug in lights so can be changed in the future and also didn’t require an electrician or wiring in.
You can read Reena’s full kitchen renovation blogpost here.
What are your favourite interiors shops? Are there any hidden gems on the High Street, for you?
I love independent shops and I think the hidden gems are all on Instagram! My favourite online shops are Grey September, Lisa Valentine Home, Pea Style and Viv and Bo. I discovered each of them on Instagram and then found out that all of the lovely ladies who run them were also Welsh and live locally so we are now friends too.
And for high street, it has to be H&M Home, Ikea and Homesense. I have loved these shops for years and pinch myself now as have had the opportunity to work with them all!
Where do you mainly try and save money when decorating?
We are not natural DIYers and also have very limited time with 3 little ones but whenever we aren’t in a rush we always do our own painting and putting up shelves etc.
A top tip is choose a handyman over a specialist person such as a carpenter as they will often come in a lot cheaper. We have had lots of bespoke furniture made such as fitted open wardrobes and garden seating made from scaffold boards. We were quoted several hundreds of pounds more for a carpenter to design and build but we had a handyman to build instead at a fraction of the cost and designed ourselves. And when I say designed, I actually mean sketched and showed him what we wanted, we didn’t even specify size, just asked to make sure it fitted in X gap so don’t be nervous or put off by that. We also had our curtain pole made in the living room from a copper pipe it took the handyman just an hour to do!
I love the community and creativity on Instagram, what do you love about it?
I love that it is full of real people with real stories to tell. I used to love Pinterest and planned my first phase of renovations based on lots of things I had seen on there but Instagram is a whole other world. You are not dealing with pictures of extravagant and probably insanely expensive homes, you have a whole range of home styles and ideas at hand and the best part you can talk directly to the person whose behind the square. If you have any interior questions whether it’s picking a brand of paint, how to make something for the house, or you want to buy what you have seen, you know you’ll be able to not only find a picture on Instagram but you’ll actually be able to talk to someone about how they did it or get advice.
And the thing that has surprised me the most is the real and offline relationships that I have formed. I can honestly say that I have made friends for life and what’s really special is that if it wasn’t for the connection we have made online, our paths would probably have never crossed. I have even set a business and joined forces with another Instagrammer (@malmo_and_moss) called @hyggeforallseasons.
Do you still have any rooms to finish or any ideas you want to pursue in our home? I would love to finish the play area side of the living space and get a pair of vintage chairs, ideally Jindrich Halabala ones or Bentwood rockers (upholstered in linen) to create a cosy reading corner/nook. I also need to redecorate the baby’s bedroom as she will be moving into her big girls bed soon, she is in the box room so it’s quite a challenging space but I am looking forward to the challenge!
A huge thank you to Reena for letting us into her world – I get so much inspiration from her home, and hope you will too!
You can follow her on instagram here, and read her blog here.

7 Cozy Hygge Tips For A Relaxing Wedding Morning
The Danish hygge trend is taking over interiors and fashion making life more cozy and intimate. From warmer clothing choices to spending quality time with loved ones, these lifestyle trends can certainly be used to help make your wedding morning the most relaxing and enjoyable start to any day.
What is hygge anyway? Well, there’s no direct translation into English, but think cozy, fuzzy, warm vibes, taking time to appreciate your surroundings, and living in the moment. I’ve got the warm and cozy part down – as I sit here writing in my furry moccasins, Mexican blanket and space heater at my side – but there are plenty more hygge tips to incorporate into your wedding morning.
With help from this gorgeous boudoir shoot from Ferri Photography, we’ve got seven hygge tips to keep you cozy and with a warm heart on your wedding day.
Stay An Extra Hour In Bed
Excited for the day, you may wake up at the crack of dawn, but staying an extra hour or so in bed (even if you’re awake!) will give you that extra beauty rest you need for your wedding day.
Refrain from setting early alarms and scheduling beauty appointments for the moment you awake. If anything absolutely needs to be done early in the morning, delegate the task to another early riser or your hired hands.
Keep Warm & Cozy
If you’re like me and you get the chills in the dead of summer, make sure you have plenty of blankets, sweaters, comfy socks, and your favorite furry slippers. Winter weddings inspire so much hygge, but even summer weddings can have chilly mornings. (Hello, Northern readers!)
Pair those cute bridal kimonos with luxe cardigans, or better yet don that plush hotel robe as you wander about your bridal suite. Cozy up by the fire when you can, watching the flames can be so enchanting and relaxing.
Enjoy Warm & Soothing Drinks
To soothe your insides and calm those stomach butterflies, craft a few warm drinks upon waking up. Beyond coffee and tea, if you need some “extra help” relaxing how about a hot toddy? Whisky can calm the nerves, warm spices tickle the senses, and lemon refreshes your palette.
Incorporate Natural Items Into Your Environment
Part of the hygge philosophy is incorporating natural materials in your environment. If your floral arrangements arrive the day before, decorate your suite artfully with the blooms, to get even more use of your special bouquets.
Spend time enjoying the fresh air by picking wildflowers to wear in your hair, even if just the morning of. (How cute would those getting ready portraits be?!)
Write a Few Thankyous For Your Wedding Day
Remind yourself what this day is all about by writing a few thank yous to give to special people on your wedding day. Thinking about how grateful you are for the people who share this moment in your life will put any wedding day snafus in perspective.
Choose a Loose, Easy-Going Bridal Hairtstyle
Like we said prior, refrain from scheduling long, early morning beauty appointments. Request your hairstylist to work at the venue or in your bridal suite. Set up your chair in the most beautiful, calm spot you can find.
Plan a hairstyle that doesn’t take too much time to do (giving you extra time to enjoy yourself that morning!) and that improves as it changes throughout the day. Romantic, messy braids and buns require very little upkeep as you celebrate and any falling pieces look intentional, so you don’t need to stress how your do looks six hours later during photos.
Eat Comforting Meals & Treats
One of Denmark’s (the hygge epicenter!) most popular treats are tibirkes, a delicious squishy poppy seed roll. The morning of your wedding, make sure you eat plenty (because you may forget most of the day) and don’t be afraid to indulge in sweet, comforting treats.
I love adding poppy seeds to these sticky lemon rolls, they’re fluffy and decadent, but the lemon gives them a fresher, brighter, lighter taste than richer cinnamon rolls. You can make the dough and buns the night before and just pop them in the oven when you wake up, filling the house with that calming yeasty scent of freshly baked rolls.
Spend Time With Your Loved Ones
How often do you have so many people you love in one place? Have your friends and family near you to keep you relaxed and distracted from any stresses a don’t starve yourself from your significant other if they’re the one that can calm you the best.
Plan a little hike, relaxing swim or easy bicycle ride to spend time with your loves, and make sure you’re plenty warm for the duration. I plan on working up a sweat while horseback riding the morning of our day, those gentle beasts keep me calm and centered.
Have you embraced the hygge lifestyle? Any extra tips you’d add to this list?

It’s right about now when everyone starts to think about autumn. The nights get colder and darker, the fire becomes a daily necessity and all you want, is to hide under the duvet. Your wardrobe starts to transition into turtle neck jumpers, wool coats and over the knee boats and you want a hygge inspired home to match. Autumn is all about cosy nights in with a chunky throw, delicious candles and colourful cushions (not to mention a warm glass of mulled wine).
Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending Macclesfield based furniture store Arighi Bianchi during their Home Edit Event, with fellow bloggers. The store is an absolute treasure trove of luxury furnishings and the ideal place to gain home decor inspiration, peruse handmade rugs, try out the comfiest of chairs and mull over your purchases in the fabulous onsite Cafe Bar (make sure you book in advance!). And don’t forget to pick up a trinket or two in the unique gift shop or select a gorgeous bunch of flowers from The Flower House.
The store has been around for 125 years so they know what they’re talking about when it comes to home furnishings and luxury, bespoke interior design and the customer service is second to none. Take a look below at the autumn winter 2017 interior design trends and shop my favourite pieces.

Monochrome statement pieces add excitement and intrigue to dull walls and are great conversation starters. Style out modern art with unique vintage furniture such as minimalist bookcases or intricate coffee tables.

Who said you can’t express your sense of style and flair through colourful interiors? Take a leaf out of Matthew Williamson’s book with this eclectic collection of vibrant cushions, retro sofas and structured ornaments.
