THE ANIMATIC IS UP GO WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE RAAAHAHHGFHGHGGHF
I never fought lynels in breath of the wild, I was too scared. But this time around, I really wanted to upgrade the barbarian armor, which you need lynel horns for... This is what it felt like every time I approached these guys.
I just realized, I don't think I shared any previews of this on tumblr, WHOOPSIE!! But I've been picking away at this for a while now between commissions. This really did turn out so silly and I love it for that reason. It reminded me of why I loved animating so much. I want to move towards focusing on my youtube channel, and making more silly stuff.
I'm pretty bummed, because I had a dry spell for a while there, and I'm going to have to reapply for monetization :( so I won't get that sweet sweet adsense bank until I post another two videos RAAAGHHHG but please go give this a watch and support me anyway!! Subscribe!! Fellate that bell!! Whatever you have to do!!

One of my personal favorite legend of zelda headcanons is that Lynels were either not always bestial monsters who would attack on sight (or can evolve to be an intelligent social race after being freed from Ganon's influence, but I like the deep lore of them having been corrupted by Ganon and being able to return to their previous state once he is gone).
They're already clearly very intelligent. They're the only enemy that can figure out you're not a Lynel when you're wearing the Lynel mask just by looking at you. They're able to fire an arrow up into the air and hit you even if you're standing behind an object that obscures you. They switch from ranged to melee weapons based on how far you are from them. It shows they have some reasoning abilities and even understanding of physics beyond a very base instinctual level.
I like to imagine that Lynels would still be largely solitary creatures in their uncorrupted state, sometimes moving about in small groups based in either family units or teams united for a common purpose. But maybe they did at one point in the very distant past have a homeland where they could congregate, perhaps outside Hyrule which is why it's unknown in the present.
I think they'd actually be very academic, and would travel a lot to study and document in their chosen field, hence the largely nomadic lifestyle. The combination of hardy hooves and dextrous hands would help them easily traverse places that would be impassible for normal hooved creatures and footed creatures alike. They are capable of feats of both great strength and delicate dexterity, and once produced great works of art.
Given the way they seek out very high, isolated places, astronomy may have been a common chosen field of study.
Their fall was concurrent with the beginning of the imprisoning war, which was the first time they were recorded appearing in Hyrule in official histories. They had previously traveled into the wilds of Hyrule, but any accounts made by people of the time were lost to the ages, and the accounts from the war only survived due to the fact that so many Lynels appeared together that they were witnessed by many people.
I like the idea of, after the events of ToTK, the Lynels regaining their full intelligence and appearing to speak to Zelda. Link immediately moves to attack but everyone is startled when the Lynel speaks. Zelda orders Link to stand down and gives him the chance to explain, and he does so and offers allyship of his people, who mean to reestablish a society outside of Hyrule. Zelda offers aid and they accept, and though all the races of Hyrule are extremely nervous about them, they start to interact and work together.
Also, in any story where a version of Ganondorf is saved, is able to return and be reformed, etc, the Lynels at first regard him as a mortal enemy for what he did to their people, and only eventually tolerate him if he proves he has changed (or, alternatively was corrupted by a being/force like Demise himself, in which case many Lynels actually turn around and accept him and mourn over what was done to all of them together).
I have so many fanfic ideas now, tbh.

So I decided to redraw it :D!!
It’s a quick 30 minute sketch so don’t expect too much
I drew it when I was supposed to be taking a test lmao

Honestly the closest thing I can see to “evil” for Botw totk link specifically is just this guy who lived in the wilderness his entire life and is very chaotic neutral
He’s still in a relationship of some flavor with Zelda because it would be hilarious if the princess befriended the feral Hylian
Imagine Link being raised by monsters. He would probably be raised by a Lynle. I can see a mother Lynle seeing a chaotic Hylian child lost and abandoned in the wilderness and go “adopting that little creature.”
The scenario I can see happening is Link and his family traveling and being attacked by either monsters or Yiga. Only Link survived, and was found by a Lynle who was raising their own kids. And a funny thing about parental instincts is that it can bridge species. Link has very good relationships with quite a few Lynle. A good few of them being adopted family. Link is seen as weird by Lynle not because of him being adopted but because he isn’t very interested in staying in one spot and isn’t territorial in the slightest. He’s also short, funny looking little guy. Shortest Lynle they’ve ever saw, and also one of the strongest.
Now I can still very much see the master sword choosing Link. Imagine the conniption the king would have.
King: the feral boy! Preposterous!
Link swinging around the sword for fun with a stupid grin on his face
Zelda: he seems talented with a blade at least (has already known about this fact for a while now. Has seen him swing around the impossibly heavy Lynle and goron weapons as well and knows that sword is in good hands)

When I saw how tall Sooga (and by extension other Yiga blademasters) is compared to average Hylians, I got kinda curious, and...

He’s just a few inches shorter than LYNELS. FUCKING LYNELS.

So I did some pixel measurements comparing Link to the 8ft tall gerudo to figure out his height and found that in botw/totk he's about 5'1-5'2.
using this information I found the heights of three things (people) I was most curious about then put said heights in a comparison chart and uhhhhhhhhhhh

this is terrifying

So there's an actual in game reason you can't get lynel weapons anymore??
So I was looking over the monster statues, just examining the design, when I notice something I'd seen but never really twigged:
Tumblr media
Those are nuts and bolts. Huh. That's not natural, that's been added on. In fact, you can still see part of the original scratchy lynel horn from botw underneath, even if it has mutated a bit like all the other horned monsters.
Tumblr media
See, lynels, with lizalfos in a lesser way, are the only enemies in the game with the intelligence and cunning to forge weapons. A lizal can only manage one boomerang, shield or bow with varying spikes and occasionally repurpose some hylian armour (and often loot anyway), but lynels are capable of creating their own unique metals and using it to completely outfit themselves. Armour, bows, shields, spears, clubs, and swords, complete with sheaths and harnesses and decoration!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in totk the particularly pointy ones are missing, leaving only shields, armour, and bows. Their weapons were subject to the Decay as well, but instead of trying to use them anyway, what did they do? They broke down their own weapons and repurposed them as enhancements to their own horns! Extra defence and a new devastating attack!
But... For what reason? They could have kept using those weapons just fine, everyone else is! It probably would have been more practical to start attaching things to the end, like the goblins have all started doing (albeit with mixed results, they seem to inordinately favour mushrooms). Why would the most feared enemy in the game feel the need to put more points into defence and intimidation, even sometimes utilising the rock armour?
What would they be feeling the need to so strongly defend from, even to the point of sacrificing huge attack power over it?
...
Link. It's Link.
The 5 nothing hero of hyrule, who built a whole community of speed running, styling on, brutally murdering lynels almost exclusively again and again and again. Moldugas, hinox, talus, they haven't changed a bit! They weren't at the center of every flashy slow mo clip since the first game came out!
But lynels in totk are running scared, they're building bigger horns to look scarier and armour to hide in, because once they need to get their short range weapons out its already over, or maybe link will just stop farming them for top tear weapons XD.
Tldr: unlike other monsters, which have branched out to kidnapping, riding flying monsters and rolling big spiky balls, lynels have gone entirely the other direction in order to try and scare the hero off after the last round of stylish massacres, and attached their old decayed gear to their horns.
Tldr tldr: botw link is the reason you can't get lynel weapons in totk because he scared them too much.
