6 Tips for Teaching Children to Listen

How many times do we wonder, “Is this kid even listening to me?” When my first child was on the brink turning two, I was asking myself this question. It wasn’t until he was nearly three that I finally found a solution that worked!

I’ve read and searched and studied the answer to this question and it didn’t take me long to realize, that it starts with me. I have to “train my child in the way he should go”. This includes teaching him how to listen, and how to respond to my expectations of him.

It also is something I need to be modeling for him, which brings up another question…”Am I listening to my husband?” Definite food for thought there…

If you’re finding parenting a challenge, you’re not alone, but don’t let yourself fall into a “victim” mentality. Take action!

God has created a perfect model of what parenting should look like. Training is really all about teaching consequences to our children. What better way to set a young person up for the “real world” than to teach them from their little bitty youth, that every single action has a consequence?

1. Set Expectations. When it comes to teaching young children to listen (the first time!), we parents have to enforce the rules accordingly. If you have said or requested something of your child and they are not responding, enforce the consequence of breaking that rule.

2. Start Early. It is easier to train a young child before bad habits are formed, than to retrain old and bad habits. However, don’t lose heart if your child is older. You might explain to your child that things are going to be different now. You didn’t understand before, but now that you know better, you’ll do better and it’s all because you love them dearly.

3. Act Swiftly! Don’t let it fester. If you are to the point of frustration or anger, you have waited much too long to act. God rebukes and chastens us in love. We are to guide our children in the same loving way. We want to respond, not react, to our children’s behavior.

4. Be Consistent. This is the key to having peace in your home as quickly as possible. It is confusing for a child to “get away with it” the first three times you said it, and then get a swat on the fourth time. Now you’ve trained your child to obey on the fourth request, rather than the first.

5. Keep Trying. Don’t let failures set you back or keep you from trying again. Ask for advice from godly friends and take it all with a grain of salt against what God outlines in His word. It was a friend who recommended a book to me that helped tremendously. Her children are older than mine and they are all loving, respectful, and smart. I wanted that for my children.

6. Diligently Seek Wisdom and Discernment. Pray about your parenting. None of us are perfect, but when we allow God to lead us by studying His word, we gain knowledge and a better understanding of how we are to behave.

3 Killed Off Oregon Coast When Commercial Crab Boat Capsizes in “Most Dangerous Catch” Waters

The commercial fishing community around Newport, Oregon is in mourning today, after three men were killed Tuesday night in waters made famous by the Discovery Channel’s “Most Dangerous Catch” franchise.

Mary B. II Crab Boat Strayed Into “Dumping Grounds” Just Before it Capsized

Because of swiftly deteriorating conditions, the U.S. Coast Guard was escorting returning fishing boats into Yaquina Bay Tuesday night.

According to Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Molloy, the Mary B. II appeared on the horizon sometime before 10:00 p.m. Although the crew indicated they were not asking for assistance, Molloy told The Oregonian that he chose to be “proactive” and began to escort the vessel to the tip of a jetty roughly a mile away.

“We met them at buoy No. 1 and explained our procedure for safely crossing the bar,” he said.

Apparently, the Mary B. II strayed north as it approached the Yaquina Bay bar. As a result, the boat was exposed to breakers off the north tip of the jetty, as well as shallows to the west dubbed the Dumping Grounds by local sailors.

“Most fishermen here know to avoid them,” Molloy continued. “The boat did not come starboard in time and was swamped. A wave washed right over the top of the pilot house. The boat was washed around the North Jetty and onto the beach.”

U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Efforts Failed Due to High Seas

The high seas, including occasional 20-foot waves, hindered efforts to rescue the three crewmembers aboard the Mary B. II.

Around 11:20 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter did manage to pull one man from the sea. He was flown to a Newport hospital, but pronounced dead upon arrival.

The body of the Mary B. II’s Skipper was recovered from the its haul on Wednesday morning, after the boat washed up on a jetty. The Newport Fire Department located the remains of the third crewmember on Nye Beach.

The dead have been identified as:

A 50-year-old man from Barnegat Township, New Jersey, said to be the boat’s Skipper.

A 48-year-old man from South Toms River, New Jersey.

A 50-year-old man from Toledo, Oregon.

Yaquina Bay Bar Considered One of Oregon Coast’s Most Dangerous Areas

According to media reports, the New Jersey men were long-time friends who had recently purchased the 42-foot Mary B. II crabbing boat and relocated to the Newport area in November.

Both had been fishermen in Barnegat Light, New Jersey before making the move.

Early reports of the tragedy identified the Mary B. II as one of the boats featured on “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove.” On Wednesday, however, the Discovery Channel confirmed that neither the boat nor its crew had ever appeared on the program.

A spinoff of the popular “Deadliest Catch” series filmed in Alaska, “Dungeon Cove” focuses on Newport’s crabbing fleet and highlights the dangers the vessels face while crossing the Yaquina Bay bar.

Apparently, currents from the Pacific Ocean and Yaquina River converge at the bar. Their collision can create hazardous conditions, particularly during a storm.

In fact, the Yaquina Bay bar is considered one of the most dangerous areas along the Oregon Coast.

Boat Owners Had Little Experience with West Coast Crabbing

Although the owners of the Mary B. II had spent years fishing off the coast of New Jersey, the third crewmember had apparently expressed concerns before he died.

“He told friends that the crew was inexperienced,” one woman told The Oregonian. “Those were his words. It’s very sad. Because he was a responsible person he went out on the trip and never returned home. I’m really having a hard time with it.”

Unlike his fellow crewmembers, the Toledo man was native to the area and known by many in the Newport commercial fishing community. Few were surprised when he offered to help two New Jersey fisherman with little experience crabbing along the West Coast.

“… his light just shone,” another friend said. “He was kind and gentle and loving and giving. He would help whoever he could. People were attracted to him because he was a gentle, humble guy.”

Wow – What a great month!

I want to again thank everyone who participated by giving us the many incredible and thoughtful answers that we had the opportunity to read last month.

I also want to thank everyone who shared their comments – we had many incredibly insightful perspectives. #ThankYou

I really am just amazed to read about everyone’s own Pursuit.. in many ways its humbling.

Getting Stuff Done With (Not Despite) Your Child

I Didn’t Enter Into Motherhood Gracefully

It finally happened. 15 months. I had time. Not long. Just a few minutes where I could do whatever I wanted.

And you know what happened? I hadn’t a clue what to do with myself!

If I’ve learned anything since my son was brought into this world, it’s that I have to give myself a lot of grace. I’m not very good at that. I want to be SuperMom and somehow anything short of that makes me feel guilty.

I want to keep a perfectly neat and tidy home. (The true disillusion is thinking I really did this even BEFORE beginning my parenthood journey!)

I want to have energy to do the 272 projects on my list, including sewing, and crafting, and learning new skills.

I want to invest in all my family and friendships and have a freezer meal prepped for every occasion and be able to give my time. The saying, “It’s the thought that counts” has never meant more to me than it does in this phase of life.

The truth is, my house is a mess. The dogs don’t get the same attention they did before my son was born, granted now that he’s old enough, they get love from my son too. I am not the greatest or most present friend these days. I’m not as helpful at get-togethers as I used to be. I feel tired and unmotivated often, especially in the evenings after my baby boy is asleep.

It IS Getting Easier

All this to say, I can look back to this time last year or even six months ago and realize that it is getting easier. Putting it all in perspective, this is just a phase, and chances are I will be able to accomplish more this time next year than I can right now…just as I can do more now than I could with a three month old.

However, the fact remains, I can never go back, so trying to accomplish things in the same way I used to probably isn’t a realistic approach. How I get things accomplished is definitely morphing and, from what I can tell by observing my friends with multiple children, a skill to be learned and perfected over time.

My Little Helper

I’m trying to have the attitude of doing things with my son, rather than despite him being around.

Here is one example. Instead of waiting for him to go to sleep to switch out a load of laundry, I simply include him in the task. Sure it takes longer, but it’s actually made the task much more enjoyable, and the bonus is I get to teach my son life skills, which is as important to his development as learning his colors and shapes.

It’s actually really cute. I open the dryer and washer doors and hand him the clean, damp laundry a few at a time and he puts them in the dryer for me. Then he closes the doors to both and to the laundry room (sometimes not before pushing all the dinging buttons) as well.

Still Figuring it Out

Other tasks are more difficult, like doing dishes. I haven’t figured that one out yet, although now when I am prepping the food for dinner, I put him on a step-stool so he can watch. He also has taken on the role of taste-tester while doing this. I got this idea from a friend (who is such a graceful mother) and it has changed how soon I can get dinner on.

So, that’s where we’re at 15 months. As always, our ever-changing family is a beautiful work in progress.

I Think I Say This Every Year…

“WOW! I can’t believe another year has passed already.” 2017 seemed to go by double quick with our little one around. Our son has changed and grown before our very eyes these 14 months. I wonder what this fresh, new year will hold for the 3 of us! I’m excited to find out!

New Year Resolutions

It’s traditional when entering into a new year to think of some goals you would like to accomplish. I have been thinking about mine a lot, so I thought I’d share them with you all.

My Top Three Goals for 2018!

Here they are folks!

Be healthier and lose weight! I know, I know, typical. But seriously this is important to me, especially as my son is becoming more and more mobile. I want to be more than be able to keep up. Truly the goal is to be healthier, by eating a good diet and staying active. One of the best ways to be healthier is simply to cut out sugar, so I’m saying, “No sugar in 2018!”

Foods that spike your blood sugar cause your body to store excess sugars in fat cells. I have been reading Trim Healthy Mama and it is an incredible guide to live by to be healthy. It’s wonderful because it’s something you can ease into just by tweaking your own recipes, and your family will barely notice and will be eating healthy as well!

I’ve also been learning more about the immune system. (A journey that began as Lil’ Dino Daddy and I decided we would not be vaccinating our son. This begs the question, what will protect us all from illness?) Coupled with adding immunity boosting supplements to our diet such as Vitamin C, Elderberry Syrup, and Colloidial Silver, we are both very serious about removing sugar from our diet, for one very simple reason that sugar FEEDS bacteria. Gross! So essentially, when you are sick and eat sugar, you are making it more difficult for your body to heal. Our family will be switching permanently to a stevia blend. Does this mean we won’t touch sugar at all this next year? Realistically no, when we are out and about. However, I will not be purchasing sugar, white flour or white rice this year, (and that includes reading labels). so all my cooking and baking will be done without these two items.

Continue to find areas to be more frugal in so that we can save as much money as possible and make our dream of farm living a reality. one way I’d like to do this is by getting really serious about meal planning with the items already in our pantry and freezer, and significantly limit eating out.

Read through the Bible in chronological order. What better way to stay focused on the right things than to be in the Word consistently? This was actually a project I started back in November, but the app I use only starts at the beginning of the Bible in January, so it has now morphed into a New Year’s Resolution.

Relishing the Quiet Moments

My Husband Rocks!

I’m so grateful for my husband. If it weren’t for him, raising my little son would be so much more difficult.

I was really able to appreciate the partnership we have today. He was busy cleaning up our place after the holiday frenzy.

We were quite a team and Daddy was the MVP. I cooked breakfast and he fed our hangry son. I did the dishes; he took care of some laundry. I sat down to nurse our son, he vacuumed the living room. Then our lil’ dino decided he wanted to help Daddy vacuum. He waddled over to him, humming the pitch of the vacuum (hilarious!), and my husband picked him up and kept about the task.

Coffee or Bust

At this moment, I could have finished the dishes, or dusted, or cleaned bathrooms (all on today’s list), but I didn’t. Instead I longingly set my gaze on my still hot cup of coffee. Usually, I get my coffee going and sneak a couple sips in while I’m spooning oatmeal into my son’s mouth. Then he finishes eating and it’s not too much time before he’s ready for a nap. By the time I get him settled, and go back to my coffee, it’s cold. Sometimes I microwave it, or top it off, but there’s just something about the first, fresh cup that’s better than all the others.

With my husband rocking all the house chores (without even realizing the night before I had written out in a list everything he was doing and it was blessing my socks off!), I didn’t want to just sit down and drink my coffee. That was just too unproductive, (though he would have let me do it).

Then with angelic voices singing in my head, an idea struck me. I need a shower…badly. So I meandered on over towards our bedroom, grabbing my steaming coffee mug off the table as I passed.

Needless to say I thought I was brilliant! I even thought about lighting a candle, but decided not to push this too far up the expectation scale. I mean, what are the chances I’ll get to shower uninterrupted? Just the other day, I had to end my shower prematurely with one leg half shaved and the other…well, not.

This is the Life

I turned the water on HOT, and set my mug on the ledge, and just stood there and relished in the quiet moment I was blessed with.

Thank you, Lord, for this peaceful moment.

Guess what happened then? Nothing! I was able to enjoy my shower, and my coffee, AND get dressed (completely shocking, that one) without interruption. What a refreshing event. Now, I’m ready for anything! Including the massively poopy diaper 5 minutes later. But hey, that was going to happen with or without a shower…or coffee…or clothes… 😉

As of yet, I haven’t done any posts specifically reviewing a product. I am not being paid to write this review, nor did I receive the product for free. I just really like this product and I have found it extremely useful.

6 Reasons Why I Like the Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat

No Storage Needed. Even when my family and I still lived in our house, the thought of finding a corner to park a full-size high chair in didn’t appeal to me at all. High chairs can be bulky, and let’s face it, even the high chairs that are made to fold down to be small enough to store, still aren’t all that much smaller. Now that we live in an apartment, I am all the more glad we bought something small. This booster seat attaches to a backed chair, with straps to secure it both behind the chair and under the chair. When the removable tray is off, I can push the chair in under the table just like all the other chairs. Once I clean the tray up, I can lay it sideways in the booster until the next meal. I can’t tell you how awesome this is! Well…actually I can! It’s never in the way! That’s definitely saying something in our apartment where space is sacred and hard to come by.

Budget Friendly. This high chair alternative is great for budget-conscious people. Today, it’s on Amazon for $28.75. Many high chairs range from $40 to over $150. It also can be used for babies and toddlers, which is my next point.

Great for Wide Range of Ages. Once your baby can sit up and is ready for those first bites of food, this chair is a great option for them. My son is now a toddler (sniff sniff – time flies!), and still uses the tray for now, but once he starts getting better at using utensils and can feed himself, we plan to take the tray off and push him up to the table so he can eat “like a big kid”. There are straps to keep the kiddos in their seat, which is a nice safety feature.

Great Portable Option. Need to take the booster seat on the go? No problem. Just turn the tray backwards and attach it to the top like a lid, buckle the strap, and throw it over your shoulder. It’s extremely light and I just watched a friend of mine leave our play date with the booster, two kids, and the diaper bag, with no problem. Here are some ideas on where you can use this booster seat.

Grandparents or other family’s homes for events and holidays

Friend’s home for play dates

Restaurants (Just be sure their chairs have a back to keep your little one safe.

In your home for every day use!

Easy to Clean. There is no cloth to clean, and the smooth plastic on this booster seat makes it really easy to wipe down. The straps are also removable and I’ve thrown them in the laundry once or twice to clean. The tray is also dishwasher safe, which is a bonus!

Durability. We have been using this seat for over a year, and it looks as good as it did the day we opened it. (When it’s clean anyway!) I anticipate being able to use it for several years for my first child and most likely for any additional children as well.

Well, there it is. I would definitely recommend this Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat to anyone looking for a great, affordable high chair or booster seat for their baby or toddler.

Do not Let Conception Become Your Idol

Disappointment

When my husband and I were wanting to have a baby, we expected that I would become pregnant within a few months. Three years later, we were frustrated and discouraged. I asked a friend of mine to pray. She had struggled for years and then had her miracle baby.

Wisely, she cautioned me, “Don’t let conception become your idol.”

This is something that I really needed to hear as I was letting our plan to have a baby overtake my life. I felt like less of a woman because I wasn’t becoming pregnant and I was resentful of my husband because I was certain he didn’t care as much as me. I know now I was angry with God although I wouldn’t have admitted it at the time. Why wasn’t He letting my husband and I have children?

God’s Grace is Sufficient for Me

We became certain that we just weren’t going to have any children naturally. I had to pray to the LORD daily and say, “My husband is enough for me.”

I realize now the error in this statement, even though it was a step in the right direction, what I should have been saying to God was, “Lord, YOU are enough.”

You see, God’s grace is sufficient in all circumstances.

Remember Jōb

Have you read the story of Jōb in the Bible? It’s fascinating. It makes me sad. It’s humbling, and it provides perspective.

This man literally lost everything. He lost his entire family. He lost all his wealth and possessions. He lost his good health. In all that, he did not dishonor God.

A Story with a Happy Ending

The story has a happy ending (my favorite kind of ending!). Job was blessed again by God with a family and wealth, but far beyond that, he was blessed with salvation. God’s grace was sufficient for him…even when it was the only thing he had.

So whether you are struggling with conception or a trial of a different type, seek God’s will as you remember that it is He who gives us our every breath. Our lives are a gift.

Perspective

One of the lessons I learned because of the time we waited for God to bless us with our son, is that it is God who opens the womb.

Only He can create life. No amount of “trying” on our part was going to do any good without God’s timing. My husband and I didn’t “make a baby”. God made a baby, and He gave us charge over him.

I thank God for our son. I thank Him for entrusting this little person to us and we pray that we will raise him to be a good, kind, and God-fearing man.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

From Baby to Toddler

My Big Ole One Year Old!

My son turns 1 year old here in a couple weeks. As my husband said today, “I’m in denial.” Watching him grow up from a newborn to this newfound toddler stage has been such a joy, even though sometimes it makes me tear up. Time is just passing so quickly!

As I often do, I have been reminiscing about those first days. Lately, I’ve been thinking about his very first day, in his very first few hours. My husband and I were sitting on the bed in the birthing suite, watching the midwife do his newborn testing. We noticed that his feet were flexed upward and laid all the way against his tiny shins. My midwife mentioned that if we didn’t see a change to take him in to his pediatrician in a couple days.

My husband and I spoke about it in the days afterwards, when my son’s feet started to look more normal. Both of us had the thought, though we didn’t verbalize it in those early hours that our son may never walk.

Aaaaaand He Walks!

I am happy to share with you that as of this past week, we have a happy, brave, and fully WALKING child. He is no longer a tiny, helpless baby, but a waddling, mobile toddler. (Ok, ok, he’s still my baby.) Remembering those scary moments in the beginning has made us all the more grateful for his progress and health in both mind and body.

We have truly loved each stage with our son more than the last. Looking forward to all the many moments, milestones, and stages to come.

Early Morning Adventure

Two mornings ago, around 4:30, I was putting my son back to sleep after a feeding. He fell asleep quickly, and I laid him in his crib. I then proceeded to get a drink of water and use the bathroom. After washing my hands, I was suddenly very aware of how dry they were.

By the dim light of the small night light we keep in the bathroom, I saw a large bottle of lotion and quickly pumped a generous amount onto my hands. I worked it over my fingers and hands, then deciding what I was doing was a good thing, I continued up my arms and past my elbows.

As I stood there in those few seconds, moisturizing, I felt like I was doing a good thing for myself, and then the moment came when I recognized the scent of what I was lathering onto my arms and hands.

That’s Not Lotion

Oh no! I thought. Tired, my moment of pride passing quickly, I rolled my eyes and held up the bottle to the night light to confirm what my nose had told me. I shook my head as I read the word, SHAMPOO.

Sticky. Thick. Goopy. SHAMPOO! I took a step toward the sink and turned on the faucet, where I proceeded to rinse off my mishap.

A few minutes later, I crawled back into bed (smelling really good I might add), and with my hands just as dry as they had been when this wee morning hour adventure began.

So, if you’re ever in need of a little excitement in your life, just follow the advice of the ol’ marketing ploy. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Or in my case, Lather. Panic. Rinse. And go back to sleep!

Cueing Your Baby for Sleepy-Time

Short, Simple Routine

Whether you’re putting your child to sleep for the night or for one of the several naps he or she may take that day, having a short, simple routine is a great way to help your baby get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer.

When you do the same things before nap time or bedtime, they become habitual and will cue your baby that it is time to sleep.

List of Ideas

Here is a list of some ideas for you to consider using for your baby’s sleepy-time routine:

Give your baby a bath

Play with your baby

Go for a family walk

Sing songs with your baby

Listen to music

Last feeding for the night

Burp your baby

Change your baby’s diaper

Change baby into nighttime clothes

Dance with your baby

Read to your baby

Bounce with your baby (gently)

Sway with your baby

Rock the baby

Give your baby a massage

Use words or phrases to signal sleep

Nurse your baby

Pat the baby

Hug and kiss the baby goodnight

You certainly don’t have to do them all! Pick a few things you and your baby will enjoy doing together. Don’t forget to incorporate Daddy or another family member into the mix so you aren’t the only one who can get the baby to sleep.

Once you have selected the things that work well for you and your baby, write them down so you remember what you did and in what order. It’s a good idea to start with your most active and noisiest activity and bright light and work your way down and end with something calm and quiet in a dark room.
