Human brain mapper Fenna Krienen PhD for @harvard. We spent an hour walking around the yard talking about her astonishing work. She is helping lead the charge on understanding who we are by learning what we are and how we work. 🔸 In order to capture this candid moment with Fenna, I kept my lighting simple. One strobe with a photek umbrella. There was the slightest amount of sun peeking through the clouds that day, which gave a painterly direction of light. Sometimes it just happens - artists, virtually untrained - produce works which shimmer with beauty. Laura Coombs Hills was one. She was already renowned for her landscapes and flower paintings, when, on a trip to England in 1890, Hills discovered portrait miniatures. Without an awareness of their history or technique, she invented her own - working in sweeping colors on an unusually large format. Her remarkable portraits resembled nothing that had been seen before, their artistry gaining her instant fame. Hills was the first miniaturist to be admitted to the Society of American Artists, and, in 1898, she was a founder of the American Society of Miniature Painters. A candid moment with famous architect Adèle Santos in her home. I captured these natural light portraits during an interview she had with Design Museum Boston for their recent magazine. I also shot the formal portrait of her for the issue as seen in an IG post from a week or two ago. 🔸 Without light, we wouldn’t be able to do anything. We wouldn’t exist! Once I understood lighting patterns, ratios, quality, contrast and color, I see it everywhere. Any environment I walk into I find myself assessing the lighting and my internal metering system turns on. Really, it’s something I can’t ever turn off.
